    Concrete And Gold

2x Vinyl With Etching On D-Side (No Music)

I wanted it to be the biggest sounding Foo Fighters record ever. To make a gigantic rock record but with Greg Kurstin's sense of melody and arrangement Motorhead's version of Sgt. Pepper or something like that. So speaks Dave Grohl of the mission statement made manifest in Foo Fighters' ninth epic, the aptly-titled Concrete and Gold, due out worldwide on Roswell Records / RCA Records. Concrete and Gold was written and performed by Foo Fighters, produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, and mixed by Darrell Thorp.

    The Concrete Confessional

An institution can be relied on forever. Its foundations don't shake due to the winds of change or tides of trends-no matter how volatile, omnipresent, or tenuous.

With steadfast determination, drive, and dedication, Hatebreed cement themselves as one of heavy music's strongest institutions on their seventh full-length offering and very first for Nuclear Blast worldwide, 2016's The Concrete Confessional. Since 1994, the Connecticut quintet-Jamey Jasta [vocals], Chris Beattie [bass], Wayne Lozinak [guitar], Frank Novinec [guitar], and Matthew Byrne [drums]-has risen to the ranks of hardcore and heavy metal elite with a GRAMMY® Award nomination, main stage slots on festivals, and countless fans worldwide. 2013's The Divinity Of Purpose earned their highest entry on the Billboard Top 200, bowing at #17 with impressive first-week sales in excess of 17,000. When it came time to return to the studio after two years on the road, Jasta and his cohorts clung to the bedrock on which their legacy stands firm.

"There's nothing better than loud amps, riffs that hit you right in the chest, and lyrics that spark a new thought and give you a charge," he declares. "That's our musical DNA. We could just be who we are. We don't need to incorporate whatever the trend is. We can just be Hatebreed. There are some new highlights to the game, but you know it's us."

The Divinity Of Purpose saw them become a headliner in locations such as Slovenia, Slovakia, Russia, Japan, and beyond. They would perform at Poland's Woodstock in front of 400,000 people. Stateside, the band supported longtime friends Slipknot on an extensive 2015 run in between festival appearances at Rock On The Range, Welcome To Rockville, and more as well as Motörhead's Motörboat with Slayer and Motörhead.

"Riding into this album, I realized we could play with bands of every genre nearly anywhere without deviating from who we are," continues Jasta. "The Motörboat was really a highlight of our career. We played this exclusive event with some of our chief influences. We got to literally chart new territory."

Returning home in the Fall of 2015, they entered the studio with longtime producer Zeuss [Rob Zombie, Soulfly]. Immediately, they channeled the spirit that's long defined their signature sound. By January, the record was mixed by Josh Wilbur [Megadeth, Lamb Of God] and primed for ignition.

"We had a really good vibe in the studio," he says. "The record is a snapshot of this time for us."

It also reflects what's going on outside. The opening track and first single "A.D." fuses together torrential thrashed-out guitars, double bass drums, and Jasta's immortal growl before an incendiary lead. The singer dissects what the American Dream means in a climate of upheaval. "Fight fire with fire, you'll see everyone's burning," he screams. Think of it as "Vote With A Bullet" or "Holy Wars The Punishment Due" for the Instagram age.

"It's a mirror of both sides of the story whether it's what you believe in the media or what you actually see," he explains. "Musically, it came together quickly. It's about all of the frustrated feelings that come out when I turn on the news. So much of our attention is focused on the wrong areas. People want to one-up each other with better clothes and cars, and it's all bullshit. Nobody goes to the grave with any of that stuff. It's not all instant gratification. What exists on the phone and computer isn't what exists in real life. What is the American Dream anymore?"

The machine gun chug of "Looking Down The Barrel Of Today" proves equally uplifting and undeniable. "I wanted something to get crowds pumped up," he admits. "So many fans will tell us, 'Your records help me get through my life.' I needed to encourage this cyclical power to get up and face the day. You either make the best of today, or you're done in by it."

"Something's Off" carries an ominously lyrical bass line into a guttural chant, showcasing Jasta's chilling vocal dynamics in the process. "I've written songs about depression, alcoholism, and falling back into destructive patterns," he says. "However, I never felt like I could really put my finger on what anxiety is. It's not just social anxiety but this unexplained feeling of unease. I've felt it since I was in kindergarten. You can't control when it happens. Heavy music has kept that beast at bay-in addition to exercise and experiences with my family. I had to confront it directly in the lyrics here."

Elsewhere, "Remember When" and "Slaughtered In Their Dreams" juxtapose visceral lyricism with a searing sonic backdrop as chaotic as it is catchy. Through and through, The Concrete Confessional is classic Hatebreed.

In order to transfer this message to the masses, the band inked a global deal with Nuclear Blast. "They're world-renowned mainstays in the metal community," he smiles. "We get to be in the company of career bands we look up to." These musicians have come a long way from the East Coast's storied nineties underground scene. Their journey has seen them achieve a 2005 GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for "Live For This," sell over 1.2 million records, and land a #1 debut on Billboard's DVD Chart with 2009's Live Dominance. Moreover, they've annihilated audiences from OZZfest Japan and Download Festival to Wacken, Hellfest, and beyond.

Now, The Concrete Confessional fits right into the bold, bloody, and beating heart of the Hatebreed institution.

"The title had to be something that was heavy and hard, but also vulnerable and honest," Jasta leaves off. "Heavy music is this cleansing, therapeutic, and cathartic experience. You're on that concrete floor, the guitars are crushing you, and someone's screaming their head off-sharing their pain and aspects of their life through words, poetry, or songs. There's nothing like it. You confess you have negative thoughts, and you purge them. For however long you're at the show, there are no bills to pay, issues to deal with, or problems holding you back. You can be free."

    Daybreaker

Beth Orton's third album, originally released in 2002.Nobody can keep you from the one you know you are, she sings quietly on Mount Washington. Fueled by her mother's early passing, each of Orton's songs is accordingly anchored by a deep sense of sadness and loss. Despite the occasional electronic flourishes at the hands of collaborators such as the Chemical Brothers and Everything but the Girl's Ben Watt, and the beaming West Coast harmonies she shares with pal Ryan Adams, Daybreaker is a supremely personal record. There's a concrete sky falling from the trees again and I don't know why, she muses on Concrete Sky. And like Tim Buckley and Nick Drake--the hopeless folk icons that came before her--there seems to be a sublime urgency in her work that suggests a seemingly innocent song like Thinking About Tomorrow is not so much about optimism as fate. -Aidin Vaziri

    Cowboys From Hell

Pantera's 1990 major label debut Cowboys From Hell was as heavy as anything of its day and it served as both the band's breakthrough and a great influence on the state of metal music. Featuring the guitar virtuosity of Dimebag Darrell and the vocal ferocity of Phil Anselmo front and center, Cowboys From Hell turned Pantera into the preeminent metal band of the early '90s and put the remnants of the '80s metal scene to rest. Highlights include Cemetery Gates, Psycho Holiday, Primal Concrete Sledge and the title track.

    Spleen and Ideal

Dead Can Dance's second album, Spleen And Ideal (1985), saw them experiment more with instrumentation, abandoning guitars in favor of cello, trombone and timpani. Widely acclaimed, there was now a richness of unification between voice and music, lyrics and structure, showing they had a concrete sense of the aural ideal they were striving towards. It's title was taken from Spleen et IdÉal, a collection of poems by 18th century French poet Charles Baudelaire.

    Weatherhead

Weatherhead is the sophomore album from Helms Alee. Their gamut of timbres from the most guttural blown-out roar to the most graceful lilting melody summon a sense of triumph, empowerment and conquest.

The relentless chugging fuzz and vocal harmonies of Elbow Grease, the concrete thrust of the central riff of 8/16, the thunderstruck arpeggio of Pretty As Pie, the siren song of Pig Pile, the unbridled scuzz of Ripper No Lube and the alternating agit-punk and anthemic approach of the title track all reinforce Helms Alees position as masters of diametrically opposed tactics.

They are the true heroes and heroines of the loud-quiet-loud. Weatherhead was recorded by Matt Bayles at Studio Litho and Red Room Studios in the Winter of 2010-2011.

    Damogen Furies

Through this record I aim to explore as forcefully as possible the hallucinatory, the nightmarish and the brutally visceral capacities of electronic music." - Squarepusher. Squarepusher's legacy is unassailable. From his early releases on Rephlex and his residency at the Blue Note, through his aggressive interpretations of ensemble jazz, the peerless Music Is Rotted One Note, his musique concrete experiments, and the boundary-warping drum 'n' bass with which he is synonymous, Squarepusher has tilted ever forwards. Damogen Furies, his first full-length since 2012's Ufabulum, sees Squarepusher's powers in full flow. All of the recordings here were made in one take, with no edits. Damogen Furies is a record that has the brutal energy and vivaciousness of a debut. It sees the peak and confluence of the preoccupations that have emerged throughout Squarepusher's career, approached with the antagonism and audacity of an artist who still believes in the power of Format: CD the intervention.

    Vibes Of Truth

Vibes Of Truth is a masterpiece that covers all the bases: from soul through funk to jazz. It's been sought-after by collectors for the three club friendly tunes within its grooves: Backed Up Against The Wall, Concrete Jungle and I Need You Girl. The album was brought to Fantasy by Donald Byrd who was enjoying great success with his productions for the Blackbyrds for them and his own jazz fusion albums on Blue Note.

The Blackbyrds were former students of his from the ethnomusicology course he taught at Washington's Howard University just as was Lincoln Ross, the multi-instrumentalist leader of the 3 Pieces. Although the 3 Pieces failed to repeat the success of the Blackbyrds they created an amazing album.

    Woman King

Aside from the immediacy and intimacy of his recorded work, there is one thing clear about Iron & Wine's Sam Beam: he is wonderfully and seemingly effortlessly prolific. In just short of 2 years he has released 2 full-length albums and two EPs. Recorded in August 2004 with Brian Deck at his Engine Studios in Chicago, Iron & Wine's latest release, the Woman King EP, is striking both for its broadened palette (percussion, piano, violin, even electric guitar all crop up here) and its thematic focus on female characters both archetypal and personal. The latter is mostly coincidental, a larger batch of songs yielding recurrent imagery when pared down for this EP. That negotiation with the sexual other might be best summed up with a line from My Lady's House: Thank god you see me the way you do/Strange as you are to me. And, the increasingly complex beauty of Iron & Wine's albums might best be summed up by the following, from SPIN (in a review of Our Endless Numbered Days): It all works because Beam is a fearlessly accessible songwriter, framing his melancholy in concrete imagery and solid, inviting melodies. He writes with the self-confidence of a man at peace with his gauzy gufts. He sings like a father talking to a child he respects or like a husband to a wife he adores. Beam has given us his second straight masterwork: self-assured, spellbinding and richly, refreshingly adult. Here's his third.

    Invisible Magnetic

Limited Edition - 400 On Blue Vinyl

The New Sound Of Numbers is an experimental post-punk band based in Athens, Georgia. It is fronted by Hannah Jones on 12 string electric guitar and features members of Pylon and The Olivia Tremor Control.

Their album Invisible Magnetic is the follow up to Liberty Seeds, their debut album which as released in 2006 through Cloud Recordings.

The new album has a more celebratory feel than the first, and the driving rhythms and layered percussion lend themselves to both a sense of urgency and instant danceability. Violin, clarinet, melodica, synth, and trumpet beautifully interplay throughout the songs and occasionally take a turn towards music concrete while also bolstering the upbeat feel of the songs.

The Rhythms of Invisible Magnetic are even more tribal, with an African influence, than those of Liberty Seeds, whose songs were described by Electrelane's Mia Clarke in a review for Wire magazine as giving a nod to the Slits and Lizzie Mercier Descloux.

The New Sound Of Numbers can be placed categorically alongside fellow Athenians Pylon and the B-52's.

    Fantomas: Le Faux Magistrat

In celebration of the centenary of Louis Feuillade's Fantômas silent film series, James Blackshaw was invited by Yann Tiersen to perform a live score to
the fifth and final film, Le Faux Magistrat, at the beautiful and prestigious surroundings of the ThÉâtre de Châtelet, Paris on October 31st 2013.

Fantômas - a master of disguise and symbol of terror - is one of the most popular characters in French crime fiction, as well as a favorite with the avantgarde, particularly the surrealists.
Tim Hecker, Amiina, Yann Tiersen and Loney Dear also performed during the event (which was broadcast live on the European ARTE channel) each
bringing their own unique sonic perspective to the other installments in the series.

Written during the course of a few months, Blackshaw drew influences from French impressionist composers, Brazillian guitar music, musique concrete
and the works of other film composer such as David Shire and Pino Donaggio, to create a noirish score that is in turns sinister, quietly profound and
    thrilling.

Personally invited by James Blackshaw, experimental musicians Duane Pitre and Simon Scott (also of Slowdive) contributed drums, electronics, synth,
bowed guitar, bass and more to Blackshaw's nylon string guitar and grand piano, with multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson adding violin, vibraphone
and several wind instruments to the 75 minute long work.
