    The Conny Plank Session

Duke Ellington's musical works are seemingly well documented; the likelihood of finding a good, unreleased Duke Ellington recording is slight at best. When Grönland Records called and told me they had found exactly that in Conny Plank's estate and asked me if I wanted to give it a listen, I felt pretty honored, and excited. The music of Duke Ellington is - in my worldview - to jazz what Bach's oeuvre is to classical music: THE great benchmark, or - to raise it up onto an even higher pedestal - the Old Testament, the alpha and omega. With both Bach and Ellington, you can sit down at a piano simply to go through it building chords and something great always happens. This music is so rich, and it is virtually indestructible.

"Everything we value in singer-songwriters today - personal perspective, insight,
originality, empathy, intelligence, wry humor - was abundant in her music."
    - NPR MUSIC

Elizabeth Eaton Converse grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire in 1924. Described
as a polymath, she attended Mt. Holyoke College, but by 1944 she
decided to leave college and, in 1949, she made her way to New York City.

Over the course of the next decade, in addition to acquiring her new moniker,
"Connie" wrote and recorded songs that captured the hearts of those
close to her. Some were recorded by the artist in her Greenwich Village
apartment, others by friends enamored of the music. These included animator
Gene Deitch and his colleague Bill Bernal, who helped coordinate an appearance
on the CBS Morning Show with Walter Cronkite.

Despite these efforts, Connie's music never reached an audience wider than,
as she once put it, "dozens of people all over the world." In 1961 Connie
tired of New York and left for Ann Arbor. She became increasingly despondent
in the 1970's, and, finally, in 1974, Connie wrote a series of goodbye
notes to friends and family, packed up her Volkswagen and disappeared.
She has not been seen or heard from since.

At first listen, Connie's music seems to keep close company with the female
folk artists who were her contemporaries. The knack for plaintive storytelling
shares much with Peggy Seeger and Susan Reed, but Connie's music
stands out from that of the American folk revival of the 1950's. Her fluid and
disarmingly intelligent poetry is often filled with the kind of contradictions that
reflects an urban perspective. She is at once a maverick and a romantic,
intellectual and spiritual, a staunch independent and a tender, pining lover.
How Sad, How Lovely captures the broad spectrum of Connie's music.

    Heaven

Robert Francis' fourth studio album "Heaven" is a feverish hydroplane through the emotional tumult of youth. Through it all, he is calmer than he's ever been; self-possessed in the face of uncertainty. Francis dances through genres on Heaven, but never escapes his distinct vision of self.

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane make for a surprisingly complementary team on this 1959 studio session, their only joint recording. With fine backup by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Connie Kay, Bags and Trane stretch out on two of Jackson's originals (including The Late Late Blues) and three standards: a romping Three Little Words, The Night We Called It a Day, and the rapid Be-Bop.

    Brilliant! Tragic!

We're going to be the band that writes the song that makes Israel and Palestine get along, is what Art Brut promised the world on their 2005 debut album Bang Bang Rock & Roll. And even though the situation in the Middle East hasn't improved, their bold promise put the London art wave band on the musical map.

Brilliant! Tragic!, their newest album and fourth overall, was produced by the legendary Black Francis of the Pixies as was their 2009 release Art Brut vs. Satan. We had more time in the studio, so Black Francis had time to teach me to sing, lead man Eddie Argos explains.

Brilliant! Tragic! offers up a singing/mumbling slacker attitude with sawdust in the gearbox, verbosely funny lyrics, and cover artwork courtesy of Image comic book artist Jamie McKelvie.

Pressed On 180 Gram Audiophile-Grade Vinyl At Pallas In Germany

Altoist Paul Desmond and baritonist Gerry Mulligan
always made for a perfect team during their infrequent
collaborations. Both of the saxophonists had immediately
distinctive light tones, strong wits, and the ability to
improvise melodically. Here, on "Two of a Mind", the two
masterful reed players are featured in pianoless quartets
that also include Wendell Marshall, Joe Benjamin or
John Beal on bass, and Connie Kay or Mel Lewis on
drums. ORG Music brings new light to the classic

    Bags And Trane

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

The Only Full-Album Collaboration Between Iconic Vibraphonist and Definitive Saxophonist

Featuring Pianist Hank Jones, Bassist Paul Chambers, and Drummer Connie Kay

It's a shame more classic hard-boppers weren't unified for multiple collaborations. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson and saxophone virtuoso John Coltrane recorded just once together, and this 1959 date makes one wish they reunited for several return engagements. Lighthearted, upbeat, and joyously fluid, Bags & Trane plays like a private after-hours session of friends hanging back and toying with the music.

In collaborating with pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Connie Kay, the headliners go for broke, expanding the parameters of two Jackson originals as well as three standards, including Dizzy Gillespie's Be-Bop and the staple The Night We Called It a Day. Upbeat tempos and spirited interplay pulses throughout.

Mastered from the original master tapes, ORG Music's reissue presents this heralded release in exacting sound, with the instruments given full range and true-to-life imaging that takes you right into New York City's Atlantic Recording Studios when the pieces were recorded in January 1959. What a delight!

    Take Ten

Limited, Numbered Edition Of 1,500 Copies

    Pallas Group In Germany

Mastered From Original Analog Tapes By Bernie
    Grundman

Features Jim Hall On Guitar And Connie Kay On
    Drums

Everyone wanted Desmond to come up with a sequel to the monster
hit "Take Five"; and so he did, reworking the tune and playfully
designating the meter as 10/8. Hence "Take Ten," a worthy sequel with
a solo that has a Middle-Eastern feeling akin to Desmond's famous
extemporaneous excursion with Brubeck in "Le Souk" back in 1954.
It was here that Desmond also unveiled a spin-off of the then-red-hot
bossa nova groove that he called "bossa antigua" (a sardonic play-on-words meaning "old thing"), which laid the ground for Desmond's
next album and a few more later in the decade. Jim Hall now gets
plenty of room to stretch out, supported by Connie Kay's gently
dropped bombs, and he is the perfect understated swinging foil for
the wistful altoist. There is not a single track here that isn't loaded with
ingeniously worked out, always melodic ideas. Now Take Ten finally
gets the audiophile treatment it deserves, with this 180gram reissue,
mastered from original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman. Each copy

Hollywood Holidays: The Classic 1991 Radio Broadcast

    1000 Only Limited Edition

This remarkable release captures The Pixies at their finest, immediately before Christmas 1991, playing a show - broadcast by public radio network KCRW FM - at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

From the outset, this legendary New England four piece are at the very top of their game - opening with the savage rip-snorting blast of Rock Music, before powering into the gloriously riff-driven surf instrumental Cecilia Ann.

Even when pausing for breath, the slower numbers like Gouge Away and Subbacultcha are tough-as-nails and seethe with a barely contained fury. In addition to the usual Francis-Santiago-Deal-Lovering quartet, this performance benefits from the added keyboard wizardry of the mighty Ubus Eric Drew Feldman, who beefs up The Pixies live sound still further.

Eventually, Kim Deals dissatisfaction with Black Francis autocratic leadership style and almost complete domination of the songwriting credits, led to the band splitting apart in early 1993. They took an eleven year career-break - while Francis forged a solo career and Deal went on to achieve further success with The Breeders - and then reconvened in 2004 with the same line-up, albeit - save for a brace of digital singles and a contribution to the Warren Zevon tribute album - only in a live capacity. That much anticipated fifth studio album has yet to materialise.

This December 1991 set is naturally heavily weighted towards the bands then current record, Trompe Le Monde, which had been released just three months earlier in September. All but two of its fifteen songs are represented here - Space (I Believe In) and the title track being the only omissions.

Head On, originally by the Jesus and Mary Chain, is a rare cover version amongst the Black Francis compositions. The only other non-original here is Cecilia Ann, a number cut in the early 1960s by The Surftones. The latter was included on The Pixies 1990 album, Bossanova which also contributes Rock Music and Velouria.

Delving a little further back in time, Gouge Away, Crackity Jones, Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven are all drawn from Doolittle (1989). Thematically linked - and played back-to-back here - are Manta Ray and Dancing the Mantra Ray, both originally only released as single b-sides. Finally, there is Ed Is Dead, the lone representative from The Pixies debut EP, Come on Pilgrim, released in October 1987.

First 1,000 Copies Pressed On Silver Vinyl

While director Francis Coppola's potboiling crime drama set against the gloriously tumultuous backdrop of Harlem's famed Cotton Club nightspot of the '20s and '30s didn't quite come together as a cinematic whole, John Barry's efforts at supervising, scoring, and recreating the energetic jive and wail of the era very nearly carry the day. The opportunity was likely a dream come true for the former jazzman turned film scorer; his adaptations of standards by Ellington and Cab Calloway are reverent yet energetic, infused by original music that weaves it into an accessible and rewarding tapestry of time, place, and art. So-so film, great soundtrack. --Jerry McCulley

Strut & Art Yart present a new definitive collection of singles released by jazz maverick Sun Ra during his Earth years, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra's prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking "Space-Bop" and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions which sounded unlike anything else from the period. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and were sold at gigs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; some were planned and penciled but allegedly never made it to vinyl and some appeared as one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases.

This release features fully re-mastered tracks, rare photos, poster artwork, extensive sleeve notes by Francis Gooding, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths.

Remastered from the Original Analog Tapes by Kevin Grey at Acoustech and Pressed on 180g RTI vinyl! True Audiophile-Quality!

Van Morrison's 1968 release, Astral Weeks remains not only his masterpiece, but one of the greatest records ever made. The haunting, deeply personal collection of impressionistic folk styled epics was recorded with an all star jazz backing unit that included bassist Richard Davis and drummer Connie May and its absolutely awash in overwhelming emotional beauty. The poetic complexity of the material combined with Morrison's vocal dexterity and passion make it one of those rare albums for which the word timeless is not only appropriate but inescapable.

The very first long-playing record ever recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet, Concorde (1955) provides a vehicle for stunningly refined playing by
legendary vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay in his maiden voyage behind the kit with the

Love Walked In and Our Love Is Here To Stay that are nothing short of definitive. This landmark album, recorded by the inimitable Rudy Van Gelder,

Eaten Back to Life is the debut album by American death metal band Cannibal Corpse. It was released on 17 August 1990 through Metal Blade Records. The album was banned in Germany (censored versions were not available, but the ban was revoked in June 2006) and other countries because of the violent cover and the extreme nature of the lyrics.[citation needed] Glen Benton of Deicide and Francis H. Howard of Opprobrium (then known as Incubus) perform back-up vocals on Mangled and A Skull Full of Maggots.

The following statement can be found in the inlay of this album: This album is dedicated to the memory of Alfred Packer, the first American cannibal (R.I.P.)
