    Contrasts

Dave Holland always described Sam Rivers' groups as his finishing school. It was Sam who instructed him to play "all the music" - inside, outside, atonal, swing, blues, and all the hues of the jazz and chamber music traditions. By the time of Contrasts, Rivers and Holland had been working together consistently for seven years (with Dave's Conference of the Birds at the start of the story), a powerhouse combination of multi-reeds and double bass. Of the drummers who passed through the line-up, Thurman Barker was one of the most creative, rippling across drum kit and marimba. Young trombone innovator George Lewis had already worked with Holland and Barker in Anthony Braxton groups. For Contrasts everyone was fired up and ready to play.

    Musicians:

Sam Rivers (soprano and tenor saxophones, flute)

    George Lewis (trombone)

    Dave Holland (bass)

    Thurman Barker (drums, marimba)

    Red Weather

After leaving Blue Cheer in 1969, guitarist Leigh Stephens, whose pulverizing roar was an essential element of the band's original sound, made his solo debut with Red Weather. In contrast to his former band's stripped-down metallic blast, Stephens spread his musical wings to explore new musical territory. Although Stephens' trademark guitar sound is still prominent, it's featured in a more eclectic context that encompasses elements of avant-psychedelia and electric blues. Also featured is stellar piano work by legendary English pianist Nicky Hopkins.

Blurring the line between pop aesthetics and studio science, Brett reps Washington, D.C. and makes music that celebrates the contrast between bright melodies and stark lyrics. The album is arguably Cascine's stickiest, most immediate release to date. Crafted of dynamic, honest and mature songs, lovers of ageless pop will find much to appreciate in both the familiar constructs of this sound and in its alluring thematic qualities.

2 Gatefold Colored LPs - Remastered

Of all of HIM's albums, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights possesses the biggest contrast between dark and light. There may not have been as many entombed emotions and vampire hearts to be found here, but Valo's sensual delivery and poetic words still dove into an ocean of romantic darkness, albeit with a hopeful light shining through on tunes like In Joy and Sorrow and You Are The One. - Bryan Reesman

These Days is the sixth studio album by American rock band Bon Jovi, originally released in 1995. This was the first album Bon Jovi released after the dismissal of bassist Alec John Such. It was also the first album to feature unofficial bassist Hugh McDonald. The album, produced by Peter Collins, Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi, was an overall darker album in contrast to the band's usual brand of feel-good, inspiring rock songs and love ballads.

With immaculate vocal turns and sleek production, Views is Drake's tour through the city that made him. A meticulous contrast to the off-the-cuff brilliance of recent mixtapes, he taunts adversaries with speaker-rattling anthems ("Hype," "Still Here"), revisits his humble beginnings ("Weston Road Flows"), and rekindles the seductive chemistry with Rihanna ("Too Good"). Those extremes-the Caribbean warmth of "One Dance" and the icy lament of "Fire & Desire," the unflinching vulnerability and unapologetic self-assurance-make Views a riveting victory lap from Toronto's game-changing MC.

    America

Domino Records is pleased to announce the release of Dan Deacon's new album, America!

America is Deacon's most powerful work to date, the culmination of years spent playing both DIY venues and concert halls across the world, of exercises in the power of the individual and a coordinated mass, of a disenfranchised mind questioning notions of cultural identity and values.

The ecstatic, celebratory sounds found on America, are in compelling contrast with the darker thematic undercurrents. The album demonstrates anger, confusion, and apocalyptic anxiety over corporatism and war, but finds consolation in the geography of the United States and in recent social movements both domestic and international.

Part Of The Blue Note 75 Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

For the second of Cecil Taylor's two Blue Note albums (following Unit Structures), the innovative pianist utilized a sextet comprised of trumpeter Bill Dixon, altoist Jimmy Lyons, both Henry Grimes and Alan Silva on basses and drummer Andrew Cyrille. During the two lengthy pieces, Lyons' passionate solos contrast with Dixon's quieter ruminations while the music in general is unremittingly intense. Both of the Taylor Blue Notes are quite historic and near-classics but, despite this important documentation, Cecil Taylor (other than a pair of Paris concerts) would not appear on records again until 1973.

    Horizontalism

Following the success of last year's Hard Believer album-which saw the trio known as Fink melding Fin Greenall's ruggedly lush vocals with a slow-burning and steady-thumping array of string lucking (Guy Whittaker) and cymbal smashing (Tim Thornton)-they ring in 2015 with Horizontalism, due for release via R'COUP'D on May 19th. Inspired by Greenall's new home in Berlin and his resurgent interest in electronic production, his series of mixes may stand in stark contrast of the bands musical output of the past years but the listener finds themselves ay the same intersection of impassioned storytelling, manifest emotion and darkly beautiful ambience that Fink fans have come to expect.

    Sincerely, Future Pollution

Timber Timbre's music has always traced a shadowed path, using cues of the past to fuse the sound of a distant, haunted now. On its fourth record, Timber Timbre coats the stark, sensual sound of 2014's album „Hot Dreams" in an oil-black rainbow of municipal grime. It is the cinema of a dizzying dystopia, rattled by the science fiction of this bluntly nonfictional time. Sincerely, Future Pollution is Timber Timbre's document of this generation's degeneration and disarray. With Kirk as narrator, a party to the play, we get caught in the folly of the echo chamber, awed by the contrast of this gothic modern age.

    Interpol

The long-awaited fourth album from New Yorks Interpol finds them exploring dark musical landscapes of layered depth and intensity. In contrast to 2007s Our Love To Admire, this self-titled opus hangs together as an album, a set of very different songs that thematically connect. From the highly melodic Barricade and Lights through the snarling Memory Serves and the extraordinary triptych of connected tracks that close the album, Interpol have never made work so emotionally resonant and packed with crescendos before. Mixer Alan Moulder has brought the rhythm section back to the fore, anchoring a thicket of orchestral sound that brings to mind touchstones from black metal to 70s art rock, but always remains identifiably Interpol. Hypnotic, bizarre, always indelible, Interpol is the bands magnum opus.

Screaming Trees is considered to be one of the Godfathers of Grunge. Although they were one of the best 'Seattle-bands' of the early nineties, they never achieved the commercial success of bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

Founded in 1985, the band had to wait till 1992 for their biggest commercial success, the release of 'Sweet Oblivion'. 'Dust' is their seventh and final album originally released in 1996. In contrast to the group's previous recordings that were more influenced by psychedelic rock and punk, 'Dust' is equally influenced by folk and blues, while still retaining a harder-edged sound. After this album The Screaming Trees disbanded.

Lead singer Mark Lanegan started a very successful solo career, working with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Greg Dulli (Afghan Wigs), Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian) and UNKLE.

    David Comes To Life

Right from the start, Torontos Fucked Up have been pushing musical and conceptual boundaries. Their third album, the 18-song, 78-minute David Comes To Life, is a rock opera, an album set to a play. Though no less monumental, it is far more melodic than their breakthrough The Chemistry of Common Life. There are more female vocals, which work in perfect contrast to Damian Abrahams highly effective wounded bull growl.

The band sounds tighter, with more space for the flourishes and imaginative songwriting that entwine their love of British indie pop with heavy riffing, and some genuinely twisted turns. Perhaps most grippingly, the triple-guitar interplay between Mike Haliechuk, Josh Zucker and Ben Cook has risen to symphonic levels. They channel musicians from Angus Young, Pete Townshend and Noel Gallagher to Bob Stinson and Lyle Preslar with ease and grace.

Deerhoofs Milk Man is being reissued on vinyl in celebration of the bands upcoming All Tomorrows Parties performance of the album in July of 2011 in London (alongside The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr.).

The starting point for Milk Man was actually a cartoon character created by Japanese artist Ken Kagami, a longtime friend of Deerhoof vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki. In contrast to the earnest guitar rock that predominated on their previous album Apple O', Milk Man featured a broad palette of orchestral colors, echoes of music theater and camp, polished and gaudy arrangements, Stravinskian harmonies, and a more stylized, anonymous playing style resulting partly from recording most of the instruments at separate times rather than playing together as a band, and partly from many of the arrangements being created on a computer.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, Moss Icon pioneered a progressive, highly emotive sound that stood in stark contrast to just about everything even remotely considered punk-rock at the time. In retrospect, they more resembled an inspired marriage of the bleak post-punk leanings of Joy Division with the raucous riffage of the Wipers, albeit considerably less accessible thanks to Moss Icon's more sinister tone, Tonie Joy's exploratory arrangements, and frontman Jonathan Vance's almost stream-of-conscious sociopolitical rampages.

In the decades since Moss Icon's disbandment, bootlegged t-shirts and patches have been easier to come by than actual recordings, and the Internet is filled with misconceptions and misinformation, incidentally lending an enigmatic, almost mythical status to the band. Rather than attempt to pull back the curtain, this collection, compiling the group's entire official catalog, serves to permanently document the very important contributions of one very important group from a very formative era of underground music. 19-song, 3LP set with download coupon from Temporary Residence.

Fleetwood Mac is a band with many faces. In contrast to their poppy sound of the 70s, Fleetwood Mac actually started out in the sixties as a psychedelic blues band under guitarist Peter Green's lead. Pious Bird of Good Omen was originally released in 1969 as a compilation of the band's bluesy roots: their first four UK singles and their B-sides and two tracks by bluesman Eddie Boyd with Fleetwood Mac backing. The album's sound is laidback, down & very dirty, featuring scorching cover versions of Little Willie John's Need Your Love So Bad and Robert Johnson's I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

The B-side features the international hit single Albatross and Peter Green's composition Black Magic Woman, the latter being popularized by Santana's version in 1970. This album is a must-have for blues fans. Anyone interested in the roots of Fleetwood Mac might discover they are essentially a totally different band than one might think.

    El Pintor

"Indie rock's elite class" - Billboard

"The masters of emotional turbulence." - Q Magazine

'El Pintor' is Interpol's fifth and most exhilarating studio album. It's a driving, relentless record, taut and epic in equal measure.

The album, recorded as a three-piece with frontman & guitarist Paul Banks picking up the bass, kicks off with "All The Rage Back Home," signaling a return to what Interpol does best, layering pulsing bass, bursts of guitar, and driving drums beneath Banks' instantly recognizable voice.

Meanwhile, "My Desire" features a throbbing beat and insistent guitar riffs that shoot off like flares into the night, while on "Same Town, New Story" Banks crafted up an unexpected melodic context for Daniel Kessler's laser-sharp guitar lines.

In contrast with previous records, Interpol took a step back on 'El Pintor' and let the songs happen. What emerged is something urgent and compelling, something revitalized and
reenergized. The result is as accomplished and thrilling a collection as the band has ever released.

    Walking The Dog (Discontinued)

One of the artists who defined Memphis Soul and put Stax Records on the map, Rufus Thomas is known for liking his R&B hard-edged, gritty and earthy. That approach served him impressively well on his debut album Walking The Dog.

In contrast to the sleeker, more elaborate production style favored by Motown, Rufus Thomas rejects Pop elements altogether and thrives on rawness on his hits Walking The Dog and The Dog as well as inspired versions of Land Of 1000 Dances (which became a major hit for Wilson Pickett), Lee Dorsey's Ya Ya and John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom.

The title track became his biggest hit. The song was covered by The Rolling Stones in 1964. Many other artists have covered the song, including Aerosmith, Roger Daltrey, Green Day, The Flamin' Groovies, The Sonics, The Trashmen and more.

    Afternoon In Rio

This is the newest project, born in Rio De Janeiro. Ersahin has already presented the Brazilian version of his Nublu Jazz Festival, and this disc probably reflects the urban electronica advances of São Paulo in equal measure. There are supremely individual vocals from Nina Becker, Thalma de Freitas, China and Junio Barreto. Also involved are Kenny Wollesen and Alberto Continentino on the rhythm sections, and the massively influential (and innovative) producer/instrumentalist Kassin and guitarists Catatau and Muzak. As if this wasn't sufficiently impressive, there are the rappers Rodrigo and Lourdes de Luz from Mamelo Soundsystem. Acidic guitars contrast with dreamy vocals and tumbling drums. This is an organic funk with resonant basslines, harmonised saxophone and skittering drums. It's a swirling brew of vocals, vibes and stinging guitar parts. The sound of an experimenting Brazil that remains in touch with its pop, rock, bossa and samba roots.
