The Dusk In UsFive years since their last release, Converge return with The Dusk In Us: a brutal but beautiful album that shows the band's artistic evolution while still capturing their classic sound.
The ninth full-length from the Boston-based heavy-music innovators-vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller-The Dusk In Us proves to be both dark and hopeful, abrasive and melodic, devastating and powerfully cathartic.
In recording The Dusk In Us, Converge once again worked in Ballou's renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. Produced by the band and mixed by Ballou, the album matches its raw energy with a subculture-crossing inventiveness that's earned Converge longtime reverence within the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes.
One of Converge's most dynamic and avant-garde albums to date, The Dusk In Us unfolds with an uncompromising honesty born from "writing about experiences in my life and working through the complexities of those things through song," as Bannon explains. On the album-opening "A Single Tear," pummeling drums and caustic riffs form the backdrop to strikingly vulnerable lyrics like "When I held you for the first time/I knew I had to survive." ("'A Single Tear' is about becoming a parent, and the perspective and strength it can give," Bannon notes.) With its abrasive guitar work and menacing undertones, "Under Duress" brings a tortured howl to lyrics channeling what Bannon describes as "my emotional reaction to the complex world in which we live." A frenzied blast of pure fury, "I Can Tell You About Pain" offers what NPR recently hailed as "hardcore-fueled extreme music that simultaneously elevates and destroys." And on the seven-minute-plus title track to The Dusk in Us, Converge deliver a slow-building, quietly haunting epic of ethereal beauty.
Converge formed in Massachusetts in 1990, then made their debut with 1994's Halo in a Haystack. Soon regarded as pioneers within the aggressive music arena, the band had a major breakthrough with their landmark album Jane Doe-a 2001 release praised as "iconic" by the A.V. Club (who also noted that Jane Doe "reaches canonical status with every re-listen").
The Dusk In Us arrives as the follow-up to 2012's All We Love We Leave Behind, an album that Consequence Of Sound called "as skull-cleaving as it is beautiful" and that made its way onto Pitchfork's Best New Music list. While The Dusk In Us finds Converge defying boundaries and pushing into new sonic terrain, it's also a natural progression for a band that's long thrived on making music that both challenges and connects. "Our only goal is to create something that moves us and resonates with us emotionally," says Bannon. "For us, it's simply a new album about new chapters in our lives. We are a very 'human' band-always have been-and our songs are all rooted in our real-life experiences. The Dusk In Us is that new chapter, just as previous records were before that."1. A Single Tear

All We Love We Leave BehindAll We Love We Leave Behind is the latest album from Converge. Once again recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at his renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, All We Love We Leave Behind is a no-frills Converge album that sees the band-which also features vocalist Jacob Bannon, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller-eschewing fancy production techniques in order to create seventeen songs that work as a cohesive whole yet can also stand on their own. There's no artificial distortion, triggers, or Auto-Tune on this album, Ballou explains, it's all organic, it's real sounds that capture the way the band performs live.
From the classic rock-inflected, guitar tapping madness of Sadness Comes Home to the technical acrobatics of Aimless Arrow and relentless assault of Shame In The Way, this is an extremely varied album that has enough sonic shifts to captivate each listener's attention. It's always been important for us to have a lot of dynamics in our music because no one wants to listen to a million miles an hour all the time, Bannon responds when asked about the melodic mid-tempo groove of a song like Coral Blue. I really enjoy that song, it has a lot of twists musically that aggressive songs don't usually have and that's something we take pride in.
Lyrically Bannon approached All We Love We Leave Behind by once again writing about his own personal experiences, however there's no question that this time around his vocals are more direct and decipherable than they've been in the past. This is a personal record and all of the songs tell their own stories, Bannon explains. Every song is rooted in real life, documenting what I have experienced over the past few years. Correspondingly the title of the album is an apology letter to everything he has had to leave behind in order to pursue his path in art and music. Bannon explains that he feels like it's important to acknowledge these sacrifices in order to be a self aware individual.
All of our albums are emotional but I feel this is our most potent album to date, Bannon continues. For me a songs like 'Predatory Glow' and 'Empty on the Inside' have a tone and resonance that communicates in a new way for our band, he adds, chalking up this ability to the fact that the group have become better songwriters by spending so much time on the road and in the studio perfecting their craft. Success to me is creating something that's moving and fulfilling and I truly feel both of those things when I experience this album from start to finish.
Converge have always been the type of band that never fit into one subculture and the band credit that to the fact that since their 2001 landmark album Jane Doe they haven't had any member changes. I think because it's been the same four people for the past five records we've been able to really get comfortable with each other and develop our own personality, Ballou explains. I don't listen to much music outside of what we've recorded so I think we're more influenced by our own history of playing together than what's currently happening in any scene.
In other words when Ballou explains that Converge is the kind of band who have always existed between worlds, it's not just lip service. We don't have one typical type of listener but they tend to be intelligent people who can make up their own minds about things. That works to our advantage because they're willing to go on this journey with us and follow along with whatever twists and turns we take them on, he summarizes. Ultimately All We Love We Leave Behind may not be the most straightforward musical journey you'll embark on but it's one that you'll revisit over and over again to relive prior experiences and simultaneously create new ones. While Helium Head was recorded as a duo, the upcoming LP expands the original lineup of Koller and vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky to include bassist Nick Cageao. The album is said to have bigger production, increased ferocity, and the bolstered confidence from writing as a three-piece unit, offering up everything from hardcore, to NWOBHM-styled arrangements, to sludge. Dissociation (Awaiting Repress)Experimental metal outfit the Dillinger Escape Plan have announced a new album, Dissociation, out via Party Smashers Inc./Cooking Vinyl America. Among the producers who worked on the album was Converge's Kurt Ballou, who mixed it at GodCity in Boston. Along with the announcement, the band have shared the record's first single, "Limerent Death." In a press release, guitarist Ben Weinman called the track one of his "all-time favorite DEP songs."
In the same press release, the band - which formed in 1997 - announced that Dissociation is "potentially" their last release before they go on an "extended hiatus" when they finish touring. In a new interview with Noisey, Weinman (who is an original member of the band) elaborated on the decision. InheritanceThe Last Bison march forward with their full-length debut album Inheritance. The critically acclaimed seven-piece folk enclave transports listeners into the untamed heart of Virginia with sweet melodies and intricate instrumentation. These elements converge and yield the band's self-proclaimed mountaintop chamber sound.
Channeling a rustic spirit through an artful amalgam of folk, classical, and rock, the group consistently sets itself apart. Ben Hardesty leads the Last Bison, and his dad Dan and sister Annah join him. Among the family are close friends Andrew and Jay Benfante, Teresa Totheroh, and Amos Housworth.
In addition to the four songs from their Inheritance EP, the full album boasts another seven thoughtful sonic ponderings. With vivid lyrics, first single Switzerland echoes the beating heart of a world traveler seekingn shelter from the winter cold. Floating FeaturesLos Angeles has often been described as a "dream factory"--both a mecca where dreamers
converge to pursue long-held aspirations, and a topography of hallucinogenic contradictions:
enchanting tangerine sunsets diffused by smog, crystal-clutching spiritualists mingling with
deep-pocketed narcissists, rows of scenic palms competing with garish billboards for
It was against this backdrop that the four members of La Luz--singer/guitarist Shana Cleveland,
drummer Marian Li Pino, keyboardist Alice Sandahl, and bassist Lena Simon--conceived
of Floating Features, the band's third studio album. For this, their most ambitious release yet,
La Luz consulted landscapes both physical and psychological.
References to dreams abound on Floating Features. "Loose Teeth" catalyzes nightmare fuel
into a propulsive, intentionally-disorienting collision of honeyed harmonies and Takeshi
Terauchi-esque jetstreams of distorted surf guitar. "Mean Dream" unsurprisingly mines dreamstate
imagery, and the lyrics and melody for "Walking Into the Sun" actually came to Cleveland
during a particularly-vivid night of deep sleep. Looming over the album's coterie of surreal
figures (gargantuan cicadas, a monstrous "Creature," The Sun King, aliens, the titular "Lonely
Dozer") is the magnificent "Greed Machine," a skulking, insatiable engine of consumption-Nathanael
West's "business of dreams" fearsomely manifested.

RemembranceRemembrance is the Software Recording Co. debut from Baton
Rouge's Suicideyear (born James Prudhomme). Written and
produced between Florida and Louisiana during the summer and
fall of 2013, Remembrance recalls those southern U.S. landscapes
and Prudhomme's experiences across eight songs equally
intimate, intoxicating and mercurial.
We first fell in love with Suicideyear by way of his Japan mixtape, a
remarkable convergence of ATL trap beats and mid-late century
American minimalism that turned and twisted more than a few
heads. Software's own label head Daniel Lopatin was privy to an
eerily similar convergence at an All Tomorrow's Parties festival one
year earlier in which two performers, Big Boi and Terry Riley,
converged at a nearby Burger King. When James revealed his
childhood adoration for Speakerboxxx, we knew it was on.
Prudhomme wrote Remembrance while reflecting on themes of
love and loss against the backdrop of the deep American south he
calls home. Remembrance deals with letting go, Prudhomme
explains. The name stems from my attempt to accept the loss
and difficulty of the past year without dwelling, instead trying to
James' experiences of reflection and resolution led to the vivid,
emotionally charged production that makes up Remembrance.
Alive with an idiosyncratic sense of melodic space, his repertoire
eschews a topical palette for a personal aesthetic that offers a
visceral love letter to abstraction. Prudhomme references both
forms we know to exist ("Caroline", "U S" and "When You Sleep")
and speculates on how they can be newly realized ("I Don't Care
About Death Because I Smoke" and "Hope Building A").
Remembrance proves a mature turn for Prudhomme without
discounting his wisdom - and experience - already beyond his
years. His obsessive focus on construction, attention to detail and
elusive self-reflection is embodied in a music devoid of language.

All We GrowThe debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.
All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers eachtime. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.
For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.1. Crosby, Stills and NashRanked 259/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are revered for their peerless vocal harmonies, inspired songwriting and musical virtuosity. When the trio first sang together at a friends Laurel Canyon house in 1968, their uncanny harmonic convergence was immediately apparent, and CSN took shape. Each member came to the new venture from other high-profile bands, Crosby from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield and Nash from the Hollies, and together they formed that rarest of musical entities, a supergroup that lived up to its billing.
CSNs stunning 1969 self-titled debut album is one of the true masterpieces of the rock n roll canon. The album made it all the way to #6 on the Billboard charts and delivered two Top 40 Pop singles with Marrakesh Express and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Also features the CSN classics Guinnevere, Wooden Ships, Helplessly Hoping and Long Time Gone.
Crosby, Stills & Nash are a most important part of the brilliant history at Atlantic Records. White MountainHaving played in various bands including Swords of Chaos and in Jónsi's touring band, White Mountain is Úlfur Hansson's debut under his own name. With influences ranging from cult cinema, esoteric literature and contemporary music, Úlfur presents a unique twist on the supernatural. In his own words:
Every track is a collage of field-recordings made while travelling. I met so many interesting people on the road (for instance, Alexandra of Mountain Man who did amazing vocals for So Very Strange) and I always carry my tape recorder with me like a camera. Some tracks are composed of beats made from my cousin throwing rocks into a pond out in the sticks in Iceland, converging with some birds I met in Chigaco. It makes this album extremely personal to me, remembering things like that and helps me achieve greater depth with the programming aspect of it. I guess i'm searching for a more
living breathing sound for completely electronic music.
The title is an homage to Rene Daumal's Mount Analogue, as well as Alejandro Jodorowski's film Holy Mountain, but also something else Each individual sound has a very special memory attached to it, so the album creates these nostalgic nonexistent spaces, hidden places - an amalgamation of instances, situations that couldn't possibly exist. Cut Yourself FreeOn the heels of last years critically acclaimed debut LP, Under the Pale Moon, and Earth Has Doors EP comes the sophomore full length from Wymond Miles, guitarist of San Francisco garage-pop titans The Fresh & Onlys.
Cut Yourself Free assembles another convergence of moon-lit romantic swagger and post-punk massacred
urgency. Again self recorded and produced to tape, Miles' song-craft has emerged more refined and poignant, benefitting from the avalanche of his frenzied live shows, but also adhering to a more minimalistic fashion with crooning mid-era Nick Cave or Bowie/Roxy Music strains of pop-modernism. But what stands at the forefront is Miles' command of his textural guitar and vintage-synth sprawl
that on his choosing can open dream-like vistas, or pierce with an engine's snarl.
Turning to the narrative, Miles weaves each song with its own vignette of story line, often with a vaguely obscured protagonist/antagonist dialog. Relationships in Miles' sketches are always tangled, if not licentious affairs, but are presented more
as lustrous gateways to mend and revitalize rather than squalor in.1. The Ascension
