Le Jazz Primitif From TrinidadOriginally released in 1961 on the Cook Laboratories label, Le Jazz Primitif from Trinidad is an extraordinary example of the jazz scene on this West Indies isle. Side A features a group led by Rupert Clemendore, an amazing drummer, percussionist, and vibes player, covering territory from American jazz and R&B, to Calypso. Side B, led by bassist John Buddy Williams, is more straight forward calypso though it is not without Jazz and R&B influences. An incredible LP showcasing the diversity of the fruitful Trinidadian musical scene of the mid 20th century. Lovingly reissued in a perfect replica of the original Cook jacket.SIDE A

Mr. Soul (Discontinued)Import
Sam Cooke, inventor and true King of Soul, recorded 'Mr. Soul' in the same year as 'Night Beat', and seems to be its more adult counterpart, with soulful ballads taking up most of the album.
A laidback tempo and rich arrangements lay the foundation over which Sam's somewhat melancholy voice floats, creating an uplifting spirit that can mend anyone's broken heart. With standards such as 'Willow Weep For Me', 'I Wish You Love', and For Sentimental Reasons', Cooke shows a quiet emotive side of himself without losing his keen sense of melody, using the strength of his voice without overpowering the listener.
Had Sam Cooke lived longer, we might have had more music of this rare quality.
As it stands, we must make do with the treasures he left behind. And now, for the first time in over thirty years, Music On Vinyl is re-issuing 'Mr. Soul' on 180 grams audiophile vinyl with remastered audio.1. I Wish You Love

FortitudeDenver's Ian Cooke released his second album, Fortitude, in January of 2012, with the help of The Greater Than Collective.
Produced by Ian O'Dougherty and mixed by Bob Ferbache, (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Wovenhand), Fortitude showcases the wide array of musical proficiency that Cooke possesses as he switches from playful to dark and sincere at the flick of a cello bow. Splicing in elements of indie, classical, progressive rock, and more, the album builds on the foundation laid down by his previous album, The Fall I Fell, and expands it with stronger writing and loftier concepts.
Cooke's talent coupled with his diligent work ethic has earned him several accolades, including features in SPIN, a Daytrotter session, a #1 ranking in the 2009 Denver Post Music Poll and "Best Singer Songwriter," "Best album," and "Best Avant-Garde" nods by Westword. Cooke was also featured alongside Billy Bragg, M. Ward, Owen Pallet, and more on a Joanna Newsom tribute.
He has toured in the US and Australia playing with The Dresden Dolls, Crooked Fingers, Built to Spill, The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, Blonde Redhead, Devotchka, Rasputina, Wovenhand, Pedro the Lion and many more. With packaging as engaging as the music it contains, Fortitude is a direct copy of nothing, a truly original and unique endeavor.1. A Reasonable Life

One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square is the second live album by the American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The album was originally released in June 1985 in the United States by RCA Records. Initially recorded in 1963 to be released as a live album entitled One Night Stand, the concert at the Harlem Square club (in Miami's historically African American neighborhood of Overtown) was not released until 1985. RCA Victor, at the time, viewed the album as too gritty and raw and possibly damaging to his pop image, and quietly kept the recordings in their archive.
The album is generally considered among the best live albums by contemporary music critics, and has been ranked in best-of music lists, including on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Night BeatClearly Sam Cooke's most intimate, most soulful and ultimately most real recording. This one has the feel of a private performance captured after hours when the audience had gone home and the singer was singing purely for the love of his songs. The performance put forth is simply straight from Cooke's soul. His selection of songs include spiritual, bluesy ballads and gospel classics. Cooke owns these songs, making each interpretation all his own. This is warm music that's easy to connect with. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original three-track masters.

Pain In My HeartImport
This album works on so many different levels, that it's essential listening for at least three categories of buyer -- fans of Otis Redding and Stax Records (natch), and more general soul listeners, and also anyone serious about their devotion to the work of the Rolling Stones and any other British invasion bands that covered American soul. Pain In My Heart was practically a road map to Mick Jagger and any number of other would-be white soul shouters in the UK, not just on the title track but also numbers like the hard rocking Hey Hey Baby. For someone only 22 years old at the time of these sessions, and just two years past his first 45 rpm record, Redding exudes astonishing power, energy and boldness, though it's all packaged with greater restraint than his subsequent records did. This was the only LP that Redding recorded during the lifetime of his idol, Sam Cooke, and his version of You Send Me is the least stylized of any of his renditions of Cooke's songs -- later on, after Cooke's death, he would throw more of himself into it. The very fact that he was covering Cooke's soul classic shows an essential difference between Redding's and Cooke's early LPs; as Redding was on a soul label, no one tried to make him into a pop singer as that'd done at RCA with Cooke -- thus, he was running on all cylinders right out of the starting gate, though he wouldn't get really interesting or show his full depth until two albums later. But even covering Rufus Thomas's The Dog, Richard Berry's Louie Louie, Little Richard's Lucille, or Ben E. King's Stand By Me, he's already doing 70% of what we came to expect from Otis Redding in the years ahead -- his writing, apart from Security, These Arms Of Mine and That's What My Heart Needs, was still somewhat less than memorable, but this is still a first-rate debut.

Otis Redding's third album presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding's version of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December.
Otis Redding Sings Soul is considered by many critics to be Redding's first great album. Recorded in April and July of 1965, it was released September 15th of that same year. The styles of Cooke and Redding couldn't have been more different; Cooke smooth and sure, Redding raw and pleading. But Redding's versions of Shake and A Change Is Gonna Come show how Cooke's sound and message helped shape Redding's Southern soul sound. Redding's singing reaches a new level of expressiveness with this as well as with covers of B.B. King's Rock Me Baby and the Motown hit My Girl.
This great album receives the full Analogue Productions reissue treatment here, starting with Kevin Gray's remaster from the original analogue tapes. Then we back that up with 200-gram plating and pressing on super-silent vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings. Finally it's all housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing. Summer SkinSummer Skin, the new album from Amy Cook is set for release on Roothouse Records/Thirty Tigers. The 12-songs on Summer Skin feature an all-star band, special cameos and Cook's strongest songwriting and recording to date. Cook successfully achieves the perfect balance between intelligent, thoughtful singer/songwriter and strong rock chick. Rolling Stone desribes Cook as "a brassier, dusty Deborah Harry."
Summer Skin represents a new plateau for Cook as an artist. "This is the happiest I've ever been with anything I've ever recorded," says Cook, "I was working with people who really were able to get into my mind and help me let go of my expectations, instead of worrying 'is this gonna rock hard enough or be rootsy enough or be smart enough.'"
Those people begin with producer Craig Street, whose long list of credits includes Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Henry and K.D. Lang. Then comes an all-star band, featuring David Garza (guitar), Me'Shell N'Degeocello (bass), Chris Bruce (guitar) and Jonathan Wilson (drums).
Cook had a few other friends make some special contributions to Summer Skin. Robert Plant sings harmony with Cook on the beautiful "It's Gonna Rain," and joins Patty Griffin on the moody "Airplane Driver." Ben Kweller co-wrote and sings back up on the catchy rocker "Getting To You."1. Waiting 4 the World 2 End

Vessel Of LoveHollie Cook combines her unique vocal talent with charming charisma to craft her own dynamic strand of lovers rock with enduring tropical vibes, weaving a path from her West London roots to an arena of diverse collaborations, critically acclaimed records, and iconic live appearances around the world. Cook's ability to continually surprise, delight, and progress solidifies her position as one of the most exciting voices in reggae, and this is crystal clear on her third full-length and Merge debut, Vessel of Love.
Cook's music career commenced early when family friend and punk trailblazer Ari Up asked Cook, age 19 at the time, to join the raucous '70s feminist UK post-punk outfit The Slits for their reformation in 2006. She thrived on being thrown into the deep end and quickly cut her teeth with four years of back-to-back shows around the globe. Her talents recognized and nurtured, she then released her first solo album Hollie Cook in 2011, with a revered 2012 dub album follow-up, while singles such as "Milk & Honey" and "That Very Night" gained support from influential radio stations across Europe. After performing at The Stone Roses concert at Manchester's Heaton Park at the personal request of Ian Brown, and her hypnotic performance on the prestigious Later With Jools Holland, the way was paved for Hollie's solo career to take off.
For someone who claimed "it's hard for a band to really stand out and shake up the world," Cook was certainly making a good go of proving herself wrong. By the end of 2014, Jamie T had requested her support for his Alexandra Palace show and featured her on his track "They Told Me It Rained." Cook had also unleashed Twice via Mr. Bongo Records, and with Mike "Prince Fatty" Pelanconi once again aiding in the album's conception, Cook confidently delivered with her follow-up to a well-received debut. In the wake of another successful release, Hollie hit the road with both The Skints and Protoje, and lent her vocal talent to Quantic's "Shuffle Them Shoes" single, which also featured on his 1000 Watts album.
Acclaimed legendary producer Martin "Youth" Glover is Cook's most recent collaborator, lending his venerable production expertise to Vessel of Love. His success with Killing Joke is only surpassed by his enduring reputation as one of the most prolific producers in the UK. "I'm very honored to work with Hollie, one of the most exciting emerging singers and writers over the last ten years," says Glover. Hollie Cook sits in good company on his impressive production list, joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, The Verve, Primal Scream, Pink Floyd, and Depeche Mode. Glover describes Cook's songs as "sharp lyrical observations and clever word play combined with an exquisite and informed pop sensibility," and they are only elevated by Glover's production on Vessel of Love, in particular the singles "Survive" and "Freefalling" as well as deeper cuts like "Ghostly Fading" and "Together."1. MeteoraLinkin Park's second studio effort (not counting the 2002 remix album Reanimation) overflows with glossy production values and Big Rock oomph, fully embracing the pop instincts of their Hybrid Theory debut. For many, Theory sounded inexcusably corporate, from its too-timely rap-rock sound to the long list of product endorsements included in the liner notes. Meteora will only amplify those complaints, but this album is actually truer to the band's nature. It's still impossible not to hear strains of Limp Bizkit, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and the like. None of those acts, however, would try something as blatantly anthemic as Easier to Run, which would sound fine to a Def Leppard fan, or as borderline danceable as Breaking the Habit and Session. Linkin Park is what Trent Reznor was always afraid of becoming, but if you ever wished he would drop the pretenses and just make a hair-metal record, you'll find Meteora to your liking. - Matthew CookeLP 1

The Rockin' Chair AlbumImport
Howlin' Wolf is the third studio album from Chicago blues singer/guitarist/harmonica player Howlin' Wolf. It is a collection of six singles previously released by the Chess label from 1960 through 1962. Because of the illustration on its sleeve, the album is often called The Rockin' Chair Album, which was eventually adopted on subsequent pressings.
The album has had quite some influence on later musicians. In 1966, fellow Chess artist Koko Taylor recorded a cover version of "Wang Dang Doodle" which reached #4 on the Billboard's R&B Charts and became a minor crossover hit. Earlier in 1963 Sam Cooke released a single of "Little Red Rooster" making #7 on the R&B Singles chart and #11 on the Hot 100. In 1969 the songs "Shake for Me" and "Back Door Man" were used in the lyrics to the Led Zeppelin song "Whole Lotta Love".1. Shake For Me

Nature NoirCrystal Stilts first came to attention with a self-titled eP in 2005 and 2008's Alight of Night, an early ripple in what would soon be perceived of as a wave of fuzzy, reverb-laden bands memorably dubbed "Jangle-Schrammelpop" by one German reviewer. The intervening years have seen the band grow and evolve, with 2011's robust In Love With Oblivion, and the Radiant Door eP, their debut release for Sacred Bones.
Founded by vocalist Brad Hargett and guitarist JB Townsend, Crystal Stilts have since come to include Andy Adler on bass, Keegan Cooke on drums, and organist Kyle Forester. Together the five-piece have crafted the band's latest lP, Nature Noir. Recorded in the damp spring of 2013, this newest disc finds the group expanding their palette to include strings, percussion, and synthesizers, to create a record that is both more sonically adventurous and a more personal and humane statement than their previous work.
On tracks such as "Star Crawl" and "Sticks and Stones", Hargett's vocals have a striking clarity and soulfulness, while the musical arrangements throughout display a sophistication that may be surprising to those who previously thought of the band as "lo-fi". Meanwhile, album opener "Spirit in Front of Me" and the ripping "Future Folklore" showcase the psychedelic grit that has long been a trademark sound.1. Spirit in Front of Me

I Might Be WrongI Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings is a 2001 live album. It consists of live performances of eight songs recorded on a tour of Europe and North America, including songs from their albums Kid A and Amnesiac.
National Anthem's fuzzed-out riff rages aggressively behind Thom Yorke's crazed, breath-scat vocal, giving the song a rollicking edge that was nowhere on Kid A. The same effect is heard on Idioteque, as Yorke, getting backup vocal help from the crowd, sings over an acoustic beat, removing the distant, electronic touch of the studio version. True Love Waits aptly ends the record with Yorke and a solo acoustic guitar, which finds just the right touch on a song that Radiohead have played with for years (long-term fans should note the first ever appearance on record of the track). In the end, Radiohead don't really stray too far from the original templates of these songs, they merely play up the highs and milk the lows, just like any good rock band should. -- Matthew Cooke1. The Sides And In BetweenThe Sides And In Between is the new album from Atlanta band Gringo Star, their first for Nevado Records.
If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele's roots, it all makes sense. Our grandad started out in radio in the 40s and 50s in Columbus, GA., Nick explains. He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out. Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. Our favorite music comes from the 50s, Peter says, and that music influenced all the 60s bands we like.
The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.1.
