    25th Anniversary First-Time Vinyl Pressing

Country legend George Strait is releasing the Pure Country soundtrack on vinyl to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album. This limited-edition pressing is the first time that the soundtrack is being released in the vinyl format.

Pure Country, one of Strait's greatest successes, hit No. 1, eventually selling more than 6 million copies, in part due to its two No. 1 hit singles: "I Cross My Heart" and "Heartland." His song "When Did You Stop Loving Me" also reached No. 6 on charts.

In terms of the film itself, Pure Country opened at No. 6 the week of its release, earning $2,739,680 in its opening week, taking in over $15 million in total. In the film, Strait plays Wyatt "Dusty" Chandler, one of the biggest stars in country music, who becomes disillusioned with his success. Strait's character simply walks away from it all, returning to his hometown to get back in touch with his roots by working at a ranch.

Kelefa Sanneh writes in the New Yorker that Strait "was persuaded by the producer Jerry Weintraub, and by Colonel Tom Parker, the former manager of Elvis Presley After a concert in Las Vegas, Parker told Strait how important Hollywood had been to Presley. 'Elvis hated making those movies,' he said - but they transformed him from a pop star to an icon.'"

Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music

Less modern for its country-R&B blend (Elvis Presley and company did it in 1955) and lushly produced C&W tone (the Nashville sound cropped up in the late '50s) than for its place as a high-profile crossover hit, Modern Sounds in Country and Western fit right in with Ray Charles' expansive musical ways while on the Atlantic label in the '50s. In need of even more room to explore, Charles signed with ABC Paramount and eventually took full advantage of his contract's full artistic freedom clause with this collection of revamped country classics.

Covering a period from 1939 to the early '60s, the 12 tracks here touch on old-timey fare (Floyd Tillman's It Makes No Difference to Me Now), honky tonk (three Hank Williams songs), and early countrypolitan (Don Gibson's I Can't Stop Loving You). Along with a Top Ten go at Eddy Arnold's You Don't Know Me, the Gibson cover helped the album remain at the top of the pop charts for nearly three months and brought Charles international fame. Above a mix of swinging big band charts by Gerald Wilson and strings and choir backdrops from Marty Paich, Charles' intones the sleepy-blue nuances of country crooners while still giving the songs a needed kick with his gospel outbursts. No pedal steel or fiddles here, just a fine store of inimitable interpretations.

    12 Golden Country Greats

1996s 12 Golden Country Greats is the Pennsylvania duos 5th full-length but the first to stick to just one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said, the title of the album is only half-correct as theres actually only 10 songs here. Featuring some of Nashvilles greatest session musicians (including Pig Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of Weens finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound.

    Lavender Country

Widely recognized as the first openly gay country music album-and cited as such even by Nashville institutions like the Country Music Hall of Fame and CMT-the landmark self-titled '|973 LP by Lavender Country stands as nothing less than an artifact of courage, a sonic political protest document of enormous power, clarity, and grace. At once a scathing indictment of the injustices perpetrated on the homosexual community, a proud proclamation of gay identity, and a love letter of bracing intimacy and eroticism, the album radically appropriates the signifiers of the conservative country genre, queering its heteronormative vocabulary into a deeply personal language.

Songwriter, singer, and guitarist Patrick Haggerty, a fearless first-generation gay liberation activist and artist, seasons his songs with Yippie deviousness; in the manner of the Cockettes, the laughs both sharpen and sweeten the impact. To our ears the inimitable aesthetics and glimpses of cockeyed humor recall some ethereal psych-folk nexus of the Flatlanders and the Holy Modal Rounders as much as any standard country and western forebears, rendering the biting poetry in an even more other worldly and timeless light. The record reflects Haggerty's experiences: his upbringing on a tenant dairy farm in rural Washington, on the Canadian border; his dismissal from the Peace Corps on the spurious grounds of his sexuality; and his righteous struggles as an outraged young gay man navigating the Pacific Northwest in the immediate aftermath of Stonewall. He designed Lavender Country as a vehicle for what he deems The Information : valid cultural communications intended to resonate with those unable to access similar resources. (Playing Cryin' These Cocksucking Tears, one of the indisputably great country song titles ever, cost a brave Seattle DJ her FCC license.) This deluxe reissue includes includes a 32pp chapbook with an oral history by Haggerty, never before published color photos, and full lyrics to these ten moving songs of gay liberation.

    Dad Country

Nashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone, among many others. He signed his deal this week (he actually signed the deal with gravy at Nashville landmark Arnold's Country Kitchen), and his third full-length album, Dad Country, is set for release on April 16, 2013.

Produced by Jonny and Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, recorded at Jackson Browne's Los Angeles studio and finished up in Music City, USA; this breakthrough album balances Jonny's trademark earthy humor and unfiltered worldview with some of his darkest material to date. Co-producer Goldsmith says, "Funny as they can be at moments, his songs access realities and experiences that we're all familiar with but sometimes fail to consider the depths of."
While immersing himself in the music world, Jonny began running marathons from Philadelphia to Barcelona and pounding out his signature leather works - the dog collars and guitar straps - seen all over Nashville and half the musical universe. He found himself in NYC for year trying to save a relationship, and its slow, painful unraveling (and demise) inspired Dad Country's bleakest, heartrending tracks, including "All We Do Is Complain" and "Have You Ever Wanted to Die."

These days, life has never been better for Jonny Fritz. He's back in Nashville again and putting down roots- and has even gone and bought himself a house. "It just keeps getting better. Now, the band is getting paid, I'm getting paid, everybody's happy, and we're packing 'em in when we play."
"This is the dream life. I couldn't really ask for anything else."

    Bayou Country

In January 1969, CCR kicked off their most productive and successful year by putting out Bayou Country, the first of three LPs to come out that year. The product of frontman/songwriter John Fogerty's fascination with Louisiana swamp-rock and R&B, Bayou Country found the band coming into their own and honing their trademark sound. Country Life

Ranked 387/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Country Life is Roxy Music's second release after the departure of Brian Eno and it's arguably the highpoint of the band's ouput from that era. The haunting, melancholic The Thrill of It All, the art-rockin' Out of the Blue, the almost-pure '50s rock of If It Takes All Night, the decadent affectations of A Really Good Time and the concluding Prairie Rose, all offer glimpses of alternative rock before the genre even existed. The combination of textures is exhilarating, and the songwriting which draws on elements of R&B, cabaret music and glam rock is among the band's most accomplished. Strange Country

New West Records is proud to present Strange Country, the new full-length album from the young and gifted cousin-duo Kacy & Clayton. The ten-song collection was recorded over seven freezing Canadian winter days at Ghetto Box Studios, a historic community hall turned studio. The product of a lifetime of deep kinship, the record showcases the purity and astounding beauty of Kacy Anderson's voice, one that has been notably compared to Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny. Only Clayton Linthicum's intricate guitar work, expert time changes and vocal harmonies could forge the foundation for Kacy's voice to soar even higher - the result being an enormously satisfying and organic album. Drawing a wide swath of inspirations ranging from the Greenwich Village folk scene to the ancestral music of Southern Appalachia and the British Isles, the cousins fashion songs steeped in those traditions, simultaneously paying homage and building on those sounds.

    Medicine Country

She may be considered the U.K. garage-rock queen (SPIN), but Holly Golightly has always embraced the sounds of the American south. She followed that muse to the dry, rural county of Madison, Georgia, where she now lives on a farm raising horses, chickens, and the curiosity of her neighbors. Golightly and The Brokeoffs (a.k.a. one-man band and frequent Golightly collaborator Lawyer Dave) recorded their new album Medicine County in an abandoned, recently foreclosed upon church nearby.

Medicine County features twelve new recordings, including eight originals by Golightly and The Brokeoffs, alongside traditional numbers like Blood on the Saddle and Jack ODiamonds. While theres a spectral quality to those traditional songs and others on the album, Golightly offers some levity, and a sharp lyrical wit, on tunes like Eyes in the Back of My Head and the albums title track, a postcard from their new home. Its a testament to the caliber of Golighty and The Brokeoffs writing that the trad numbers consort seamlessly with their originals.

The Washington Post has noted that Holly Golightly can make you believe in past lives and shes lived a few of her own. While Amy Winehouse and Duffy were in grade school, Golightly was fronting girl-group revival harbingers Thee Headcoatees. More recently she has collaborated with groups like The White Stripes and Mudhoney, and in 2005, two of her recordings were featured prominently in the acclaimed Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers. Since 2007, she has performed with The Brokeoffs, a partnership Pitchfork calls heartily ramshackle, and American Songwriter magazine has hailed as genuine, inspired and soulful.

    The High Country

180-Gram White Vinyl In Gatefold Jacket

Recorded At Chris Walla's (Death Cab For Cutie) Hall Of Justice Studio

Engineered By Beau Sorenson (Bob Mould, Camera Obscura)

A raw pop record infused with undeniable hooks, distortion pedals,
passion, grit, and maybe a little insanity, The High Country is the first
SSLYBY album to truly capture the power and energy the group
    exudes when performing live.

SSLYBY recorded The High Country as a power trio consisting of
Dickey, guitarist/vocalist Will Knauer, and bassist Tom Hembree, a
founding member of the group who left after Broom, but returned to
(as Dickey describes it) "stir things up in the best way possible and
demand we play louder and faster."

After a month spent demoing and practicing, the three musicians
convened at Seattle's legendary Hall of Justice to record with engineer
Beau Sorenson (Superchunk, Garbage). In many ways, The High
Country is the record Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has been

Her sweet, rich and enveloping voice immediately draws you in and the fullness of the songs captures your attention, enhanced by the just-right production. Acoustic-based, melody-built - a fine, fine work. Even though this young lady is from Sweden, I'd place her at the forefront of the American vanguard. One listen will tell you why and how.

"Aha Aha" opens the album and straps you in for the ride down this dusty, sun-setting musical highway; "Big Sky Country" is a melodic and melancholic, near Irish-folk-feel singalong while "Dusty Heart, Empty Hand" is pure Nashville with its pedal steel runs and banjo. "Lullaby" is a sweet, gentle piano based track with interestingly contradictory lyrics (" everything's beautiful - still you wish you were dead "); "A Matter Of The Hearts" is a vocal showcase - you can hear the natural skill in her singing and the feeling she conveys; "Bonfire" is a uptempo acoustic piece (without percussion) that builds with dramatic (yet not overboard) flair. "Fairground" is an acoustic shuffle with beautiful background harmonies and one of the album's standouts; "So" closes out the album in a subdued yet emotional manner.

    Mississippi Hill Country Blues

Fans of this Mississippi hill country blues patriarch will enjoy this time capsule recorded in 1982 and 1967. It's Burnside in the raw, playing solo on acoustic guitar as he did for his neighbors for most of his early career--when farming was still his profession. Burnside reprised Miss Maybelle, Mellow Peaches, Poor Boy, Jumper on the Line, and others among these songs on his more recent albums for Fat Possum Records, but these early versions capture his driving blend of one-chord rhythm with lightning decorations of slide and melody already fully developed.

If anything, Burnside's guitar playing has slowed over the years, but it's taken on gravity as it's grown more spare, just as his voice--high and limber here--has added character with the imperfections of age. Burnside is also a more idiosyncratic musician now. Nonetheless, it's a pleasure to hear him doing numbers like Bad Luck and Trouble nearly 20 years ago, fusing the influences of John Lee Hooker and Fred McDowell into the potent style that's made him one of today's premier practitioners of old-time rural blues. -Ted Drozdowski

    Low Country Blues

    Produced by T-Bone Burnett

Band Features Dr. John, Jay Bellerose, Doyle Bramhall II

Legendary Singer Interprets Classic Blues Songs by Likes of Muddy Waters and Magic Sam

As a founding member of the one and only Allman Brothers Band and in his own storied solo career, Gregg Allman has long been a gifted natural interpreter of the blues, his soulful and distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in the history of American music. Low Country Blues marks the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's seventh solo recording and first in more than 13 years. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album finds Allman putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam. Named for the coastal Georgia region Allman calls home, Low Country Blues stands as a high water mark in an already remarkable body of work, rich with passion, verve, and the unerring confidence of a true survivor.

Though Allman has been a constant presence on the road over the past decade, with the Allman Brothers Band as well as with his own crack combo, he has spent precious little time in the studio since the 2002 death of producer Tom Dowd - the man behind the glass for much of his recorded career. So when his manager suggested he veer off from a 2009 tour for a Memphis meeting with the multiple Grammy Award-winning Burnett, Allman admits to being not entirely enthused.

I said, 'Oh man, I don't wanna start meeting a string of dudes, all of 'em trying to outdo the other one, he recalls. But we stopped in Memphis and here comes T Bone. The first sentence out of his mouth was something like, 'Tommy Dowd was The Man, wasn't he? I've patterned a lot of my stuff after that gentleman.' I thought, 'Right, what've we got here?'

The two musicians quickly bonded, chatting about favorite records, mutual friends, and reminiscences of Nashville's renowned clear channel station, WLAC, which introduced rhythm & blues music to a generation of late night listeners from New York to Miami. He told me some guy gave him a hard drive, it has 10,000 obscure blues songs, Allman says. He says, 'I'm gonna pick out twenty of 'em and send 'em to ya and you tell me what you think.' He said, 'They're old, like Billie Holliday old, and when you listen to 'em, I want you to think about us gettin' in there and about bringin' 'em up to today.'

Allman found the idea irresistible and in January 2010, a stunning combo was assembled at Los Angeles' The Village Recorder, comprising Burnett and Doyle Bramhall II on guitars, backed by the brilliant rhythm section of upright bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose. What's more, the lineup included a brass section arranged and conducted by trumpeter Darrell Leonard, whose illustrious resume extends back to his work with Delaney Bonnie & Friends (featuring Gregg's late, great brother Duane). As if that weren't enough, sitting in on piano was a dear old friend, the Night Tripper himself, Mac Dr. John Rebennack, with whom Allman co-wrote Let This Be A Lesson To Ya' on the Gregg Allman Band's 1977 classic, Playin' Up A Storm.

This powerhouse band - which of course also features Gregg's own acoustic guitar expertise and trademark Hammond B-3 organ - cooks up an earthy and atmospheric musical stew infused with gritty R&B muscle, spooky Southern psychedelia, and greasy deep soul grooves.

Like any genuine bluesman, Allman's own life has been colored by myriad triumphs and too many tragedies. Low Country Blues was initially slated for a mid-2010 release, but that plan changed when Gregg, who had long battled chronic Hepatitis C, was notified that he was a candidate for a liver transplant. In June 2010, he entered the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where he successfully underwent the difficult surgery. Knowing that he had only just made one of the defining albums of his recorded career proved to be the best medicine, giving Allman the inner strength he needed to fully heal.

    12 Golden Country Greats (Colored)

    Marble Saddle Brown Vinyl

1996 release 12 Golden Country Greats is the Pennsylvania duo's 5th full-length but the first to stick to just one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said, the title of the album is only half-correct as there's actually only 10 songs here, why? You'll have to ask Dean and Gene that one. Featuring some of Nashville's greatest session musicians (including Pig Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of Ween's finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound. A classic reissued on marbled saddle Brown vinyl!
