Symmetry In BlackFirst time available on vinyl - Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Crowbar with the release of Symmetry in Black
In a genre as prone to flights of fancy as heavy metal, Crowbar have always felt like a grounding presence, anchored to reality with their seemingly impossible heaviness. Keeping up their good works, the New Orleans sludge metal masters return with their tenth album, Symmetry in Black, an exercise in consistency that proves the band is still up to the task after 25 years of brooding sonic devastation. The album finds the band shifting gears from the pummeling assault of 2011's excellent Sever the Wicked Hand to something slower (though with Crowbar that's a fairly relative term).
Some things haven't changed, however, namely the powerful playing and singing of Kirk Windstein, whose anguished bellows and penchant for lumbering riffs continue to act as Crowbar's bellwether. While this consistency has been key to their longevity, what really makes Crowbar special is their relatability. When other bands are off telling tales of demons and black rituals, Windstein and company take on earthly woes like addiction and fearing our own mortality. Despite their delivery over a brooding, glacially paced riff, lines like Reject the thought of losing what is mine/Ascend above your own demise, from Reflection of Deceit, feel like they're meant to empower listeners rather than bring them down. Symmetry in Black is an album that shows us we don't have to waste our time fighting imaginary enemies, because the real world is plenty full of darkness that, much like Crowbar themselves, is always there.1. Sever The Wicked HandLimited Edition
This US quartet, formed in 1989, emerged in the early 90s as one of the leading lights of the New Orleans extreme metal scene, purveying a sound that blended Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus-styled heaviness with hardcore aggression. Kirk Windstein (b. 14 April 1965, Wiltshire, England; vocals/guitar), Todd Strange (b. 1966, USA; bass) Kevin Noonan (guitar) and Craig Nunenmacher (drums) made their debut in 1991 with the dark and doom-laden Obedience Thru Suffering, after which Noonan was replaced by Matt Thomas, a former bandmate of Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo in Razor White. Anselmo, an old friend who collaborates with Windstein on side-projects such as Down and Both Legs Broken, helped to refine and improve the band`s sound with his sympathetic production on Crowbar, which included a brutally heavy interpretation of Led Zeppelin`s `No Quarter`, adapted stylishly to the Crowbar sound.
The band was well received on tour with Paradise Lost in the UK and Pantera in the USA, and released the Live +1 EP (which was packaged with Crowbar in the UK) before returning to the studio with the stated intention of making Crowbar sound `like Jethro Tull`. In 1995, Eyehategod guitarist Jimmy Bower (b. 1966, USA), who had played with the original line-up in 1989, was recruited as the band`s new drummer, although Time Heals Nothing was recorded with Nunenmacher. True to form and promise, it provided a thunderous blast of controlled aggression and dark melodicism. Guitarist Sammy Pierre Duet (ex-Acid Bath) joined in time to help record 1996`s Broken Glass.
Bower left following the release of the 1998 follow-up Odd Fellows Rest. He was replaced by Sid Montz on 2000`s Equilibrium, following which Strange retired from the music scene and Nunemacher departed the ranks for a second time. Subsequent albums have seen sole remaining founding member Windstein joined by an ever-changing cast list of personnel.LP 1

The Unquiet SkySince the early 80's when bands like Cathedral and Saint Vitus pioneered the doom genre of metal, the style has continuously evolved and spread, despite being far less recognized and appreciated than most other forms of more traditional heavy metal. Bands like Eyehategod and Crowbar melded elements of doom into sludge and stoner metal, gaining modest success in the more mainstream metal community, but doom is beginning to enjoy a new wave of popularity, thanks largely to the more progressive experimental work of artists like Stephen O'Malley (Sunn0))), Burning Witch). Indian is a Chicago-based trio whose brand of doom is more akin to that of Eyehategod than the earliest or latest incarnations of the genre, and their distinctively black metal vocals immediately set them apart from the pack.
First things first: The Unquiet Sky is everything a doom record should be. The bass tone is so perfect and intense that it could shake your body through a pair of headphones. The guitars bring Black Sabbath-esque fuzz down enough notches to kill a horse. The percussion is sparse when it needs to be (Ration) and energetic when it's allowed (Tied and Gagged). Dylan O'Toole's vocals give Indian the extra edge over many of the other bands who have perfected this formula by complementing the melancholy created by the music with a demonic voice of evil. There is even an extended track of terrifyingly psychedelic feedback, perfectly placed to scare the crap out of you when you're high. In fact, the only thing that fails to be suitably doom-y and evil about this record is the cover illustration of a Christ-like baboon which, despite being evil enough in spirit, looks a bit too much like it was drawn in a junior high art class.
This record is an easy recommend for fans of the doom genre, but what about anyone unacquainted with the genre I personally don't consider myself a huge aficionado of the style, but loved this record. The only things required to enjoy The Unquiet Sky are an attention span and a love of all things metal. This record generally moves slowly, as does most doom, but it is far less droning and repetitive than many recent examples of the genre. As the name of the style suggests, doom is, by its very nature, dark, oppressive music. As such, Indian is definitely better suited to being digested over an extended period of time at high volumes, rather than short bursts in your car or through headphones.
Bottom Line: If you're searching for the latest, greatest doom record to add to your collection, look no further than Indian's The Unquiet Sky. Fans of Neurosis, Eyehategod and Godflesh should also definitely pick this up. It's a solid record from beginning to end from an up-and-coming trio of doom virtuosos.

Alpha & Omega's second full-length is a juggernaut of an album, drawing from influences of hardcore mainstays such as Cro Mags and Integrity as well as crossover and metal like Crowbar and Metallica, resulting in a sound that is 100% us, vocalist Luis Hernandez said. He continued, Every lyric, every riff is real - this album truly reflects Alpha & Omega as a whole.

Down II: A Bustle in Your HedgerowThis was Down's first album in seven years since the release of NOLA, the longest gap between the band's Four studio albums to date. Since Down was a supergroup, the band went on hiatus in 1996 so that members could focus on their main bands (namely Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera). Down reformed in 1999 with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Todd Strange. The band wanted the album to have a bluesy feel, so they moved into Phil Anselmo's barn, dubbed Nödferatu's Lair, in southern Louisiana where they lived and recorded the album in 28 days without anyone leaving the house.LP1

PsychosisBreath in, breath out: Psychosis is the fourth installment from the most lucent export of Brazil: CAVALERA CONSPIRACY!
The Thrash Metal-brothers Iggor and Max Cavalera dive deep into the mire of human panic and anxiety states. This is the soundtrack to your worst sickness, a most sinister Thrash-psychoses that rip the scabs from old wounds.
The album features brutal shredding on the track Spectral War then progresses to super-fast blastbeats in Judas Pariah that lead into the stomping beast called Crom. A hail of Black and Death Metal-arsenal that disturb your hearing in so many ways! Just merciless. Primarily these guitar solos chatter in paranoid disharmony.
With Psychosis CAVALERA CONSPIRACY are able to reanimate the intensity of the good old 80s thrash, black and death metal. This record is so powerful, that even the thought of hearing this wonder hurts. The brothers Cavalera have outlived all the crazy eras of metal and remain more stable and frightening than ever! The Garden Of Unearthly DelightsMighty Doom icons CATHEDRAL from Coventry, England for sure are one of the most unique and unpredictable acts around. These legendary merchants of slow-motion sound could care less about redundant genre restrictions and have so far incorporated everything from Doom, Psych, Folk up to Funk in their works. With their eighth album The Garden Of Unearthly Delights CATHEDRAL have achieved much more than simply living up to that reputation - the guys created timeless songs that couldn`t be farther away from standardisation, stagnation and convention.
Produced by Warren Ryker (DOWN, CROWBAR), The Garden Of Unearthly Delights is probably the most varied effort of the band so far. While a song like 'North Berwick Witch Trials' will bring back memories of such immortal riffs`n`groove as in 'Hopkins' or 'Ride', 'Tree Of Life And Death' simply tears everything to pieces with its ultra-heavy guitar sound and fierce vocals courtesy of Lee Dorrian.
The centerpiece of it all certainly is the 27-minute-long mammoth epos 'The Garden' that almost bursts with such a wealth of ideas and changes in atmosphere that other bands probably couldn`t come up with on a whole album. Using every stylistic device from female vocals up to violins and embedding it all in that typical CATHEDRAL brand of Doom, The Garden Of Unearthly Delights is a treat for every fan of the band, old and new alike.
Starting with quite sinister and ultra-slow songs on the 1990 EP In Memorium and the full-length album Forest Of Equilibrium, CATHEDRAL quickly gained cult status. The 1992 follow-up EP Soul Sacrifice brought changes soundwise and saw the band mixing traditional Doom with 70s - Hardrock and showed a first glimpse of the trademarks CATHEDRAL still represent nowadays.
After having previously toured with MORBID ANGEL and SAINT VITUS, the band embarked on the legendary Gods Of Grind - Tour with ENTOMBED, CARCASS and CONFESSOR. „The Ethereal Mirror" featured alltime faves like 'Ride' and 'Midnight Mountain' and suddenly gave CATHEDRAL the reputation as „the next big thing in Metal".
Struggling with this label, the band started to experiment on the EP Statik Majik and probably tried out every single instrument they could lay their hands on to churn out a 20-minute-track like 'Voyage Of The Homeless Sapien'. After touring with BLACK SABBATH, the guys went on to record the landmark „The Carnival Bizarre" in 1996 that brought us immortal tunes such as 'Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)' and 'Utopian Blaster' - the latter featuring Tony Iommi on guitar. Supernatural Birth Machine was released in 1996 after touring in South America, Europe and Japan amongst others. The catchy songwriting on that album echoed on Caravan Beyond Redemption in 1998, but with a heavier twist to it. The next serious change in style occurred on the gloomy and sludgy Endtyme that went almost completely without sound experiments and concentrated on ultra-grim riffing. 2002`s The VIIth Coming combined catchiness with heaviness to form a well-balanced mixture between old and new CATHEDRAL.

Kill Devil Hill (Out of Stock)Kill Devil Hill is a new all-star band featuring members of Black Sabbath, Dio and Pantera. Their eagerly anticipated self-titled debut was produced by Warren Riker (COC, Sublime, Cathedral) and is presented here on double vinyl with an exclusive bonus track plus a CD courtesy of SPV/Steamhammer.
One of the baddest metal bassist around, Rex Brown is most famous for his role as the longtime bassist for the Grammy nominated, platinum selling band Pantera. He provided the bottom end thunder to the band, live and on record. Since the 1990 release of Panteras Cowboys From Hell, Rex has had a hand in multiple gold, platinum, and #1 records. In 2002, Rex joined Down for the release of Down II. In 2003, Rex joined Crowbar in the studio to record and help produce Lifesblood for the Downtrodden. He also went into the studio in 2006 to record Down III.
Vinyy Appice has powered the rhythm live and in the studio with the bands Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, Ozzy Osbourne, WWIII, Axis, Rick Derringer and at the age of 16 even performed with John Lennon. Vinny has recorded and co-written songs on over 25 albums, many of which are multi-platinum records. His drumming can also be heard on numerous movie soundtracks and DVDs including Waynes World 2, Heavy Metal, Iron Eagle and Bedazzled. Vinny, the author of the drum instruction book Rock Steady and DVD Hard Rock Drumming Techniques has performed drum clinics around the globe.
Mark Zavon has appeared in Guitar Player Magazines Spotlight column and has received acclaim far and wide from other players for a unique style and approach. In the 90s Mark recorded with the band Scream Parade for Shrapnel Records. He also went on to record and tour with vocalist Stephen Pearcy of Ratt and metal band WWIII featuring Mandy Lion.
Dewey Braggs vocals combine an eerie resemblance to the late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley, but it's his own melodic style that truly steers this supergroup with powerful conviction.LP1

Hasta La Muerte (Out Of Stock)Limited edition double vinyl from Southern Lord in Stoughton gatefold jacket which perfectly complements the amazing painting by artist Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Morbid Angel).
Following the initial vinyl release of Xibalba's Madre Mi Por Los Dias debut full-length in 2011 (via A389 Records), Southern Lord released a CD pressing of the album, as part of its ongoing underground series. Madre Mi Por Los Dias stormed the hardcore world with its apocalyptic, down-tuned, slow-motion brutality, the band's ultra-energizing buildups and relentlessly brutal breakdowns instantly drawing comparisons to Disembodied, Bloodlet, and the heaviest of the late '90s/early 2000s hardcore scene as well as kings of low-end, groove-laden death metal like Crowbar, Obituary and Sepultura.
Hasta La Muerte, Spanish for "to the death," is the band's first full-length album for Southern Lord. It's a lethal collision of brutal death metal, vicious hardcore and oppressive sludge, taking the concept of heavy to a new, crushing level in the process! Hasta La Muerte was recorded and produced by Taylor Young (Nails). Greg Anderson of Sunn O))), Goatsnake and Southern Lord has collaborated with the band on 2 tracks: "Flood" and "Cold." Anderson's sub-bass six string warfare seemlessly integrates within the ultra-heaviness of the Xibalba sound.
The band's songwriting, performance and recording of the album shows Xibalba taking a giant leap forward. Hasta La Muetre will firmly establish the band as a force to be reckoned with as well as new leaders within the underground metal scene.1. No Serenity
