The Magic WhipThe new album from Blur, titled The Magic Whip, started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013. It is released by Parlophone Records, 16 years since 13, the band's last record as a four-piece. The recordings for the band's eighth studio album began in Spring 2013 at Avon Studios in Kowloon. Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree spent 5 days jamming together and carried on with their live dates while the recordings were put aside and the group finished touring and returned to their respective lives. Dave resumed his day job as a lawyer and Alex returned home to his farm in Oxfordshire from where he writes a regular farming column in The Telegraph and hosts the annual food and music festival The Big Feastival with Jamie Oliver. Graham, who has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums to date, continued to work on his own material and, in 2014, Damon released his Mercury-nominated debut solo album 'Everyday Robots'.Then, in November last year, Graham revisited the tracks and, drafting in Blur's early producer Stephen Street (Leisure, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur), he worked with the band on the material. Damon then added lyrics and the 12 tracks on The Magic Whip is the result.LP 1

13 (Special Edition)To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of their debut release, Blur's sixth album 13 has now been expanded across two discs, cut on heavyweight 180g audiophile vinyl and housed in a replica of the original sleeve artwork.
Marking their ten years together as a band, 1999's 13 is the sound of Blur becoming, according to Damon Albarn, "completely free." The album was created from lengthy improvisations around song structures, recorded and painstakingly edited by producer William Orbit.
Lyrically, the songs are rooted in personal and emotional changes, most notably on two of the album's singles, "Tender" and the heartbreaking "No Distance Left To Run." The album also sees songwriting contributions by guitarist Graham Coxon who takes lead vocal duties on Coffee & TV.LP1

IbeyiIbeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee) means "twins" in the language of the Yoruban culture
of Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz. The album of the same name, produced by
XL Recordings boss Richard Russell, is the story of two sisters: their relationship,
their origins, their shared history and their musical chemistry.
The twins' roots are reflected in the polyglot nature of the lyrics - in English,
French and Yoruban - and music which combines ritual chants with synths and
samplers, jazz vocals with the spellbinding mystery of Björk and Fever Ray, the
traditional with the modern. This uniquely cosmopolitan sound is the perfect
vehicle for their intimately personal stories. According to them, "This album is
about love and family and people who are gone."
Lisa-Kainde and Naomi (the eldest by two minutes) were born in Paris, where
they still live, but spent their first two years in Cuba. Their father was Miguel
"Anga" Diaz, the member of the Buena Vista Social Club, who was acclaimed as
the greatest conga player.
Record producer and XL Recordings boss Richard Russell first encountered
Ibeyi when he saw them performing "Mama Says" on a 2013 YouTube video. He
soon invited them to meet him - a serious offer from someone who in recent
years has produced albums by Gil Scott-Heron I'm New Here and Bobby Womack
The Bravest Man In The Universe (co-produced with Damon Albarn), as well
Albarn's own acclaimed 2014 solo album Everyday Robots.
The album is a subtle melange of diverse influences: not just Lisa-Kainde's soul
and jazz leanings and Naomi's up-to-the-minute beatmaking but the bloodlines
of France, Cuba and Africa, including the use of Yoruban chants they first heard in
the Santeria ceremonies. The tense, dramatic "Oya," the lead track on their debut
EP, addresses the deity (or "Orisha") of change and destruction while "River"
honours Oshun, the Orisha of love, rivers and fertility. Yoruban culture travelled
from Nigeria and Benin to Cuba and Brazil with the slave ships centuries ago but
is little-known in Europe.1. Eleggua (Intro)

Welcome To MaliWelcome to Mali, the second Nonesuch effort from Malian duo Amadou & Mariam has already garnered rapturous reviews from critics in Europe, where it was released in late 2008. The album appeared on many year-end best-of lists; Londons Sunday Mirror declared, African pop doesnt get more effervescent and joyful than the sound of this blind couple dueling together and sending their message of love around the globe. Simply wonderful.
American audiences were introduced to the married pair, who met at a Malian school for the blind, with its Nonesuch debut Dimanche à Bamako, produced by the Paris-based world-music provocateur Manu Chao. With Chao behind the wheel, the album was like an exhilaratingly bumpy taxi ride straight into the heart of the Malian capital; cacophonous sounds of the streets mixed in with the spare, propulsive rhythms of the songs, making it all sound thrillingly immediate. Amadou & Mariam, already into the second decade of their overseas career, attracted an impressively wide-ranging state side audience, from world music stalwarts to clubgoers to indie rockers.
Welcome to Mali, recorded in Bamako, Dakar, Paris and London and produced with longtime manager Marc-Antoine Moreau, is less high-concept travelogue than straightforward set, yet it proves to be even more adventurous and exuberantly rocking. Damon Albarn briefly joins the pair, co-producing and co-writing the opening track Sabali, as ingeniously arranged as the best of his work with the Gorillaz and featuring Mariams almost otherworldly vocals over swirls of disco-style keyboards. Amadou has long spoken of his affection for classic rock and it shows in his playing; Londons Independent calls Welcome to Mali a rock album with an African Heart. Theres a bit of Yardbirds-era swinging London, keyboard arrangements that wouldnt be out of place in a Parisian disco, hip hop breaks from Toronto-based Somalian rapper Knaan and the occasional garage-rock riff, as well as traditional touches courtesy of fellow Malian Toumani DiabatÉ and his magical kora playing. A deep undercurrent of the blues, an arguably indigenous Malian sound that migrated to the Mississippi delta, runs through the disc. Says Uncut, Amadous slithering, grinding guitar riffs sound dark and spiky, the missing link between Ali Farka TourÉ and Steve Cropper.1. Sabali (prod. Damon Albarn)

Closing TimeWhen unassuming young Orkney music-maker Erland Cooper picked up his guitar and travelled the length of the country to play a show in London's
Notting Hill, little did he know that a chance encounter with musical veteran Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good The Bad & The Queen, and Gorillaz)
would be the start of a unique songwriting friendship. Together they formed Erland & The Carnival and now, nearly a decade later, arrives Closing Time -
the band's third, most accomplished album yet.
Opening a new chapter, Closing Time is an understated, inward looking collection of songs that feature stunning string arrangements and Erland's
impassioned vocals at centre stage. But rather than the modern folk adaptations of traditional songs, children's poems, and ancient literature on the
band's earlier albums or the pair's recent conceptual folklore project The Magnetic North, this time the band tell tales of a more personal nature.
"Previously we didn't know what we wanted to say or how to say it and would use stories and direct references to help us get to a place we could feel
secure," admits Simon. Erland adds; "in making this record we discarded an album's worth of material that sounded like the first two albums. We wanted
to make something different - doing another Jackson C Frank cover wasn't an option."
Above all, Closing Time is the very first time the listener can truly hear the wholly collaborative process that is Erland & The Carnival. Lyrical and musical
duties have always been shared, yet here the combined creativity of the pair's working friendship is only solidified with Erland taking a more 'hands on'
approach to production. The string arrangements, brought about by the album's unashamed twisted and selfish love song 'Quiet Love', were scored by
Simon before being recorded by a quartet in his living room later that week.
Recorded in Damon Albarn's studio13 with previous Erland & The Carnival engineer Steve Sedgewick and mixed by London Grammar producer Tim Bran
with Paul Weller guesting on two tracks. Despite creating more than 40 songs in the process of writing the album ("Some of the song melodies and ideas
on this may have even been written when I was 21 to be honest. 'Hopeless' certainly was," admits Erland), it was a brilliantly spontaneous and productive
time taking just over 3 days to come to fruition. "We learnt to be incredibly disciplined" tells Simon. "It feels like pruning a tree - when you cut away the
needless and weaker branches, what you get is something much fresher and stronger coming through."1. Closing Time

Amadou & Mariam have long cultivated a spirit of openness that they often put into practice with musicians from all backgrounds and styles. Their journeys have allowed the couple to forge lasting friendships. M. and Vincent Segal were their guests, Keziah Jones and K'naan also interacted, the Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and British guitarist Johnny Marr were invited to jam while Manu Chao and Damon Albarn produced them with skill. No doubt, the Malian couple's history is written in the plural suggestive of their affinities.
Their land, Mali, is currently one of the most attractive centers of globalized music. The couple still draws from their region's inspiration, a living spring they draw from beyond their region. Such is the strength of Folila, reflecting a growing openness to the world of music. The idea was to produce two albums: a crossover in New York, centered around meetings, and the other more roots in Bamako, with guests mainly African, says Marc-Antoine Moreau, their loyal manager and artistic director, with sound engineer Antoine Halet.
Stage one was recorded in three weeks at the Cooper Square Hotel, which accommodated multiple guests, including Santigold, who puts her voice on Dougou Badia. Tunde and Kyp, the two poets of the combo TV On The Radio, slide naturally on Wally Katasso, a ballad mixed by Keni Takamoto, the sound engineer for Danger Mouse. As for Theophilus London, the young poet prints a subtle flow of soul-jazz onto Nebe Meri, perfectly fitting with Amadou's blues accents.
Other esthete of great black music, Amp Fiddler brings some Detroit soul on Wari, before lending his keyboard lines onto Africa My Africa, boosted by Antibalas' section, the Afro-funk combo from Brooklyn, whose brass gleam here and there. As for Jake Shears, the soul of Scissor Sisters and a fan of the couple since a tour together in England, he served his high-pitched voice on the haunting disco blues of Metemya. Last but not least, Ebony Bones puts fire on C'est Pas Facile, a track that flirts with Congolese rumba and electro sounds.
During stage two of the process, it was back to Bamako, for another three-week session, this time in the studios of Manjul, a prominent rastaman installed in Mali. He has a clear idea: to use the same basic track, the same tempo, the same tones, but putting it into perspective with long-time friends, like the percussionist Boubacar DembelÉ and Yaho the totemic bassist, and guests.
Judge for yourself: Bassekou KouyatÉ and his ngoni, Idrissa Soumaoro on kamele ngoni, Toumani DiabatÉ on kora, Zu Tereta on monochord fiddle, Tuareg guitarist Abdallah Oumbadougou: all the best subtle strings of the universe are on this record. This album sounds at once organic and electronic, both roots and rock, both retro and futuristic, and totally unlike anything else.1. Dougou Badia (feat. Santigold)

I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now (Awaiting Repress)Got at Girl starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Dan "The Automator" Nakamura - are thrilled to announce the release of I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now, on Bulk Recordings. The pair's enthralling debut album, sees Nakamura - whose innumerable, inimitable credits include influential production (Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon, Gorillaz) and membership in such visionary collaborations as Deltron 3030, Lovage, and Handsome Boy Modeling School - and Winstead - known for her work in the films Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Spectacular Now, and next seen in Kill the Messenger - sweetly detached vocal delivery and nuanced lyricism.
Winstead and Nakamura first crossed paths while both worked on 2010s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the actor acting and the musician contributing to the score. Winstead - who counts Lovage's Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By as "one of my favorite albums of all time" - approached Nakamura after a cast and crew dinner to let him know she was a big fan, assuming that would be that. "About a year later, Dan came up to me at the premiere and said, 'We should do something sometime,'" Winstead says. "I was like, okay! I would love to! I didn't think it was real."
Right from the jump, the two seemingly disparate artists found they were both surfing similar waves of inspiration. Each were especially enthused by the daft, dewy and even slightly degenerate sounds of 1960s French pop, that uniquely Gallic soufflÉ of girl group soul, cafÉ jazz, lush arrangements and groovy eroticism.
"It was a meeting of the minds," says Nakamura. "A kindred spirit kind of thing." He sent a skeletal track to Winstead, suggesting she begin thinking of songwriting in terms of character and story. For the nascent lyricist, the task came with no little pressure. Winstead and Nakamura soon commenced writing together, collaborating on lyrics as they learned more about each other's creative strengths and interests.
"I've had the fortune of working with a lot of very talented people," Nakamura says. "When it's right, it's right. That makes it work really easily. Working with Mary is like working with Del (The Funkee Homosapien) or working with Damon (Albarn) - it's really natural. It just works."
I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now is surprisingly seamless, a perfectly realized union of atmospheric ambience and ambitious songcraft. The Automator is of course a master of genre subversion and experimental futurism, effortlessly transmogrifying hip-hop, psychedelia, found sounds, and all manners of pop and world music with his singular taste for prolix wordplay, multiple personas and conceptual adventure. For Got A Girl, he has assembled a rich, enveloping sound world all its own, with hints of Laurel Canyon folk, yacht rock, and sunshine pop stylized and synthesized through sumptuous arrangements, intricate electronics, and unfettered melodic invention. The sonic landscape calls up far flung locales both real and imagined, knit together by restless grooves, elastic dubby beats, and Winstead's complex characterizations.

Blur (Special Edition) (Out Of Stock)To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of their debut release, Blur's eponymous fifth album has now been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, Arcade Fire, New Order, Joy Division), with the remastering overseen by legendary producer, Stephen Street. 1997 saw Blur abandon English character song and look towards left-field American rock for inspiration. Across 110th Street (40th Anniversary Edition) (Out of Stock)One of the few surviving links to the pre-Soul/R&B era, Bobby Womack - who was originally discovered as a teenager singing Gospel music by the late Sam Cooke - nowadays enjoys full-blown "Living Legend" status. Blessed with one of the warmest, most readily-identifiable voices in Soul music, he carved out his reputation with a series of classic albums and singles in the early 70s, re-emerging again in the 80s with his career masterpieces, The Poet and The Poet II, the latter achieving platinum status in Europe alone.
This unique package concentrates on the early 70s, and is built around the iconic, award-winning original soundtrack to Across 110th Street (1972), the critically-acclaimed - albeit violent, bloodthirsty and deeply disturbing - Blaxploitation movie which starred Anthony Quinn, Yaphet Kotto and Anthony Franciosa. Perhaps Womack's most celebrated album, this compelling OST remains the most important soundtrack of the genre, the powerful title song later featuring heavily in both Quentin Tarantino's 1997 homage to Blaxploitation, Jackie Brown, and Ridley Scott's 2007 opus, American Gangster.
Womack has enjoyed a long, rich career and still retains a strong cult status in the UK and Europe. He continues to record and tour sporadically and after battling ill-health in recent years, a new album is scheduled for release in June.
