Applehead ManTranslucent Red Vinyl
When people think of the "Minneapolis sound," most ears point to Prince. But there were many other highly revered and influential bands on the scene in the '80s and '90s, Trip Shakespeare, certainly among them.
Matt Wilson and Elaine Harris met at Harvard and began playing together while Matt's hometown music scene was exploding with not only Prince, but bands like HÜsker DÜ and The Replacements. Matt asked Elaine to head back to Minneapolis with him, where they hooked up with Matt's friend, John Munson to form Trip Shakespeare.
The band became a local sensation and their debut-Applehead Man-appeared on the regional label, Gark, in 1986. Omnivore Recordings is proud to bring Trip Shakespeare back into the spotlight with a reissue of that classic debut, including seven previously unissued bonus tracks, some with Matt's brother, Grammy® winning songwriter Dan Wilson, who soon joined the band becoming the fourth member of Trip Shakespeare.
Applehead Man (co-produced by the band's John Munson) will be released in a digipak with liner notes from Jon Niccum (author of The Worst Gig), and previously unseen photos. The LP (first pressing on translucent red vinyl, with black to follow) contains the original ten tracks, liners and photos.

FrogtownAnthony Wilson, best known as a jazz guitarist, has released an organic, occasionally 'noir-ish'-sounding album on which he sets up and sings within cinematic musical landscapes, proving himself to be an equally compelling story teller. Frogtown is an area of Los Angeles, whose official name is Elysian Valley. People live there but other than a lush stretch of the L.A. riverbed, there's not much there, which is how the people like it. The same can't be said of this record, which will have you wondering from where came this Anthony Wilson? ... the album's sound and the deftly drawn arrangements (for some reason uncredited) perfectly compliment Wilson's dreamy, rural intentions (producer Joe Harley gets a 'audio consultation' credit). The sound achieves a rare level of transparency, delicacy and three-dimensionality in today's hard-edged audio world. Bernie Grundman cut lacquers from what I assume were high resolution files. I doubt you'll ask yourself 'why buy the vinyl?' after your first listen. - Music = 10/11; Sound = 10/11 - Michael Fremer, AnalogPlanet.com.
Frogtown, a new album of original instrumental and vocal songs, is guitarist Anthony Wilson's widest-ranging work to date, and his debut as a vocalist. Wilson enlisted Grammy-winning producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Gary Clark Jr., Kimbra, Ry Cooder), a longtime friend and musical colleague, to help him realize this collection of layered and personal sonic stories.
Featuring a cast of renowned musicians - drummers Jim Keltner and Matt Chamberlain, violinist Petra Haden, and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Josh Nelson - each song on Frogtown evokes a distinct feeling and landscape, and takes the listener someplace new. Virtuosic guitar and ensemble work, well-made songs and detailed arrangements, and intimate vocals are the driving forces of the album.
An album highlight is the song Your Footprints - written by Wilson with songwriter Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift, Semisonic) - featuring a special guest appearance from iconic jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd. The collaboration with Lloyd alludes to Wilson's deep jazz roots, and evokes memories of his father, the late, great composer/bandleader Gerald Wilson. Other songs summon varied musical influences - FM radio of the 1970's, Ry Cooder's diverse body of work, children's rhymes, guitar styles from the 1920's to the present day.
Frogtown travels into, through, and beyond genres; the album's melodies and lyrics guide the listener through tender and complex emotional landscapes. Anthony Wilson steps confidently into the center of the frame for this musical and personal portrait.1. She Won't Look Back

Fire WithinCritically-acclaimed British singer/songwriter Birdy is pleased to announce details of her brand new album Fire Within.
Birdy commented - "It's been an incredible few years since I released my debut album back in 2011. I've been writing new songs and I'm so excited for people to hear them. They come straight from my heart."
In this new phase her fans will see Birdy come to the forefront as a songwriter in her own right, having written/co-written all of the 11 tracks on the new album. Over the past year, Birdy's been in the studio collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business including Ryan Tedder (Beyonce), Dan Wilson (co-wrote and produced 'Someone Like You' for Adele), Rich Costey (Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Sigur Ros) and Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons, whom she's collaborated with in the past. RedFor the last two years, I've been working on an album called Red, Taylor says. I called it Red because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles. In my mind, when you experience love that's fast paced and out of control and mixes infatuation, jealousy, frustration, miscommunication, and all of those lovely emotions...in retrospect, it all looks red.
After writing her last album (Speak Now) entirely by herself, for this record Taylor collaborated with several artists, producers, and songwriters she had always wanted to work with for the album's 16 tracks, including the lead single, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. While Nathan Chapman serves as the lead producer, a variety of producers were involved in the recording process. Swift co-wrote the album with people from all different places in music. Collaborators include Dan Wilson, Butch Walker, Max Martin and Ed Sheeran.
Rolling Stone has described the album as Swift's most eclectic set ever, ranging from 'State of Grace,' a howling, U2-style epic with reverb-drenched guitars, to a sweet acoustic duet with U.K. singer Ed Sheeran. Another key track even features a dubstep-inspired bass breakdown. The album's lead single, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, was released in August 2012. The song became Swift's first number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, recording the highest ever one-week sales figures for a female artist.1. State of Grace

ADAD-ANTI-6814xLost In The Trees
A Church That Fits Our NeedsA Church That Fits Our Needs, the second album by North Carolina group Lost In The Trees, is underway, announcing itself as a work of vaulting ambition, a cathedral built on loss and transformation. In the summer of 2009, Ari Picker, writer, composer and architect of the band, lost his mother, an artist in her own right, when she took her own life. Picker was in the midst of releasing his bands debut album, All Alone in an Empty House, a collection of folk-inflected songs that surprised with its orchestral arrangements, to an acclaim usually reserved for seasoned veterans: both heart wrenching and beautiful, said Paste, while the Huffington Post called the album spellbinding in its musical ambition, touching in its intimacy, and often overwhelming in its emotional honesty. Picker took the loss of his mother and set about transforming the events into a tribute, composing, writing lyrics, his mothers picture above his writing desk: the same picture that now graces the albums cover. I wanted to give her a space, in the music, to be, and to become all the things she didnt get a chance to be when she was alive.
The result is A Church That Fits Our Needs, an album that can stand beside musical journeys like Neil Youngs Tonights the Night and Bon Ivers For Emma, Forever Ago. Pickers astonishing voice, an instrument that veers from Carl Wilsons emotional purity to the otherworldly abstractions of Thom Yorke, opens our window into this intensely emotional music. While this might sound like a somber affair, A Church That Fits Our Needs is anything but. Picker, a classically trained composer, has Shostakovich and Stravinsky at his fingertips, but the music on this album speaks just as much to his love of Phil Spector and old film scores. Above all this is pop music, in the way that A Day In the Life or Radioheads No Surprises are pop music, seeking to present complex ideas to the widest possible audience. This is the album Picker set out to make, a celebration of the woman he calls a warrior, and a testament to the power of music to heal and transcend.1. Moment One

Blood MoneyBlood Money is based on the socio/political play Woyzeck, originally written by a young German poet Georg Buchner as a spare, cinematic piece in 1837 and inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by bizarre army medical experiments and infidelity, which led him to murder his lover. Waits, along with wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan, wrote songs for an avant-garde production of Woyzeck directed by Robert Wilson, which premiered in November 2000 at the Betty Nansen Theater in Copenhagen and went on to win Denmark's version of the Tony for Best Musical. The album careens from the brutal to the tender with assaulting rhythms and romantic melodies. It's a grim musical deposition on the human condition, a dark mortality play where Tin Pan Alley meets the Weimer Republic.Blood Money is flesh and bone, earthbound, said Waits. The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage, the human meat wheel...They are more carnal. I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth. Ripe Dreams, Pipe DreamsCameron Avery has arrived as a new breed of nocturnal crooner, a train-wreck romantic creating timeless, ambitious music for the modern age. Utilizing his soulful wit, shrewd arrangements, and a deep, husky baritone, Avery harnesses the dark power and humor of artists like Nick Cave, Scott Walker, and Tindersticks to expertly walk the fine line between vulnerable and venerable.
Hailing from the late 2000s-era Perth, Australia, a healthy scene of hard-hitting garage rock bands, including a long stint as the drummer of Pond, Avery found his musical footing while playing with friends but sought the reward of his own outfit. Encouraged by his friend Kevin Parker of Tame Impala to record on his own, Avery started The Growl as his solo project in 2007, making an EP and an album of aggressive, distorted psychedelic rock and roll. When Parker asked him to join Tame Impala as its touring bassist in 2013, Avery jumped at the chance and rose with that band to the top of the psych-rock heap, but all the while remained focused on carving out his singular identity as an artist and following his own muse.
On a break from touring, Avery decided to head to the US to work on his album. He would settle in Los Angeles at the behest of Jonathan Wilson, the Echo Park musician and producer who also encouraged Avery to shine a spotlight on his baritone singing voice, unlike the snarling, obscured vocals of The Growl. It was a lofty idea, but one to which Avery aspired, encouraged by the challenge.
Melancholic machismo is written into the very DNA of Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams. From the classical, finger-picked guitar on the opener "A Time and Place" and the orchestral vamping of "Do You Know Me By Heart?" to the bombastic, self-assured swagger of "Dance with Me." He takes an emotive page from the Leonard Cohen songbook-of-longing on "Big Town Girl" just as naturally as he thumbs an aggressive note of Bad Seed strut and Cramps rut on "Watch Me Take It Away." And by the time he purrs that earnest refrain of "Baby, it's you" on the album's closer "C'est Toi," Avery has surely mastered that drunken tightrope dance. Now a resident of New York City, Avery looks to continue his search for the ultimate sensations from a fresh vantage point.1. A Time and Place

Often considered one of his finest albums since the classic Ringo Lp from 1973, Time Takes Time would become one of the Ringo Starr's most loved works and one of the finer rock recordings of 1992. Featuring the hit single Weight Of The World, Time Takes Time would be the centerpiece of this Beatle's highly successful All Starr Band tour later that year and beyond.
Whenever the legendary Ringo Starr makes a record, there's always a little help from his superstar friends like producers Jeff Lynne, Don Was, Peter Asher and the late Phil Ramone, who all contributed their studio expertise into making Time Takes Time the stellar work that it is.
Along with musicians the caliber of The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, the late great Harry Nilsson, Steely Dan's Jeff Baxter, and alternate rockers Jellyfish, Time Takes Time would soon become one of the more important albums of the year. While the hit single Weight Of The World became a Ringo Starr fan favorite immediately upon its release, more classics abounded as the rockin' Jeff Lynne produced classic Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go truly shines.
More heartfelt classics like All In The Name Of Love and the magical Don't Know A Thing About Love (penned by Heartbreaker Stan Lynch), as well as The Posie's Golden Blunders truly made this a wonderful listen from start to finish. As CD's were the format of choice in 1992, this fine recording was only released for a short time only in most parts of the world until now ..
Friday Music is very honored to announce the first time North American vinyl release of the Ringo Starr classic Time Takes Time. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA, this amazing Lp also receives a first time 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Green Vinyl release. When The Beatles were formed in 1960, Ringo Starr was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. After achieving moderate success with that band, he quit and joined The Beatles in August 1962, replacing Pete Best. Starr played key roles in The Beatles' films and appeared in numerous others. After the break-up in 1970, Ringo Starr released several successful singles including the It Don't Come Easy, Photograph Back Off Boogaloo and You're Sixteen.
Ringo Starr achieved commercial and critical success with his 1973 album Ringo, which was a top ten release in several countries. He has been featured in a number of documentaries and hosted television shows. Since 1989, he has toured with twelve variations of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band.
Time Takes Time is the tenth studio album by Ringo Starr, released in 1992, his critically acclaimed comeback album. His first studio album since 1983's Old Wave, it followed a successful 1989-90 world tour with his All-Starr Band. Time Takes Time features several celebrity guests including Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson and Electric Light Orchestra front man Jeff Lynne.
Many critics considered Time Takes Time Starr's best album since 1973's Ringo. Rolling Stone magazine wrote, The drummer's most consistent, wide-awake album since Ringo, from 1973.
