Dance Mania: Ghetto MadnessStrut return to the archives of seminal Chicago house label Dance Mania in January 2015 for 'Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness'. The follow-up to Strut's acclaimed Dance Mania label retrospective 'Hardcore Traxx' from early 2014, this new installment places the spotlight on the raw, stripped back, hyper bpms of ghetto house and the rise of the movement's fresh generation of stars during the mid' 90's including DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, Jammin' Gerald and DJ Milton. The album tells the story of the evolution of Chicago's sound during the era as mix tapes circulated through local stores and DJs developed their own underground following, playing local parties in the projects. Crowds began responding to faster bpms and gangsta rap-inspired X-rated lyrics. As DJ Deeon remembers, "it bridged the gap. It made it OK for guys in the ghetto to like house again and it brought the women onto the dance floor too." Dance Mania was perfectly positioned to capitalise on the new sound - many of the DJ's came regularly into Ray Barney's record store and, as Chicago's most trusted and respected label owner, he was offered the best tracks for commercial release at an early stage. 'Ghetto Madness' brings together some of the underground classics and enduring favourites that earned Dance Mania the title of 'Ghetto House's Motown'. Tracks include DJ Deeon's party-starter 'The Freaks', raw DJ Funk cut 'Computer Sex' and Nina Kraviz favourite, Paul Johnson's 'Give Me Ecstacy'. Other featured gems from the archive include the dark early Steve Poindexter outing 'Computer Madness' and Tyree's in-demand jam, 'Nuthin' Wrong'.1. Jammin' Gerald - Pump That Shit Up

REDI-SUN-5437xThe Shirelles & King Curtis
The Shirelles and King Curtis Give a Twist PartyIn 1962, the twist was EVERYWHERE. Artists from Joey Dee to Frank Sinatra (?!) were all chasing the craze, feverishly recording twist-able platters to meet the dance floor demand. Saxophone great King Curtis didn't sleep on the trend, scoring a major hit with "Soul Twist" along with several other twist-themed singles. Thus, it was only natural that he should team up with the country's #1 girl group, The Shirelles, themselves in the middle of an incredible run of chart-topping singles. This inspired pairing resulted in the Shirelles' second LP release of 1962, The Shirelles and King Curtis Give a Twist Party.
And what a party it is! The album's eleven tracks mix scorching instrumentals with vocal numbers, never once stopping for air. Curtis' gritty sax tone combines with The Shirelles' dulcet harmonies for a one-of-a-kind sound that will have everyone in the house on their feet, wearing through shoe leather. Sourced from the original Scepter analog master, this Sundazed reissue is destined to become a "go to" LP for your next soirÉe. REDI-SUN-5330xJerry Cole & His Spacemen
Hot Rod Dance PartyLimited Edition
As one of the busiest and most versatile session guitarists of the 60s, Jerry Cole recorded with a litany of legends, including Phil Spector, the Beach Boys and the Byrds. But to those in the know, hes renowned for his own incredible surf and hot rod instrumentals, which he delivered on a series of vintage albums with his band the Spacemen. Coles modernistic recordings, however, sound completely different from other surf-and-drag releases of the period, with expansive arrangements that often featured elements of jazz and exotica, the better to showcase the guitarists inventive, assertive playing.
One of Coles best-loved LPs is this amazing 1964 release, which includes contributions from many of the same L.A.-based musicians who played alongside Cole in the now-legendary session ensemble known as the Wrecking Crew. Coles powerful guitar work powers such turbo-charged numbers as Night Rumble, Border Run, Stinger and Hot Rod Queen, which live up to the albums title and then some!

REDD-MOM-2216xJon Spencer Blues Explosion
Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015New York City is a big place. A loud place. Some of that noise is music. And some of the music is noise.
Sucking it all in and turning it loose with prejudice, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion takes a ferocious bite out of the Big Apple with their new long-player, Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015, the first record of the new era that demands to be stopped and frisked!
Like the best sides that percolated up from the Bronx, the Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village across the 1970s and '80s - Freedom Tower is more than a high-octane dance party record, it is a document of New York City, a chronicle of grit and terror and love!
It's all here: The Hustler and The Trust Fund Baby, the Mosh Pit Casualty, the Celebrity Chef, the Crooked Cop, the Struggling Artist, the Sucker MC, the forgotten Sex Workers and Last-Chance Cinderellas. Within these grooves are cold-water tenements, blue-chip galleries, dingy Avenue B studios, and the last real warrior poet whose dark magick brings garage rock ghosts back from the grave!
Freedom Tower is a radical portrait of New York City set to the savage funkacide of the Blues Explosion, locked and loaded with the most deadly, predatory guitar riffs that primitive magnetic tape can handle . From start to finish, Freedom Tower is overmodulated, cooked with dirt, and finished in acid rain! Freedom Tower is packed with the kind of beats and rhymes that will make even the most reserved Walter Mitty jump back and say "damn!"
For nearly a quarter-century the Blues Explosion have been sweating, freezing, eating, drinking, fucking, fighting, winning, and losing in New York City, perpetrating some of the most timeless moments of musical mayhem in the history of Manhattan and beyond. As ever, Jon Spencer tells the tales, Judah Bauer plays the blues, and Russell Simins smashes things to bits... And as always Blues Explosion stomp on the faux underground oasis peddled by bourgeois hipsters and marketing jocks to deliver the real deal - rock'n'roll that is unapologetically nasty and strong.
Rehearsed and polished in a string of secret gigs and unannounced opening slots in theaters, hotel bars, and dives (often under assumed names), and then recorded at the legendary Daptone House Of Soul in Bushwick and mixed with hip-hop cult legend Alap Momin at the cutting edge of Harlem, Freedom Tower is the most provocative statement of urban pathos and panache ever recorded.
Play this record at all-night rent parties, picnics, discotheques, and protests!
There are eight million stories in the Naked City - but there is only one Blues Explosion!

Bo Diddley's Beach PartyFrom The Original Chess/Checker Masters In Glorious Mono
Faithful Reproduction Of The Original Artwork
It's the beach party of your dreams. Not one of those with the squeaky-clean suburban kids doing the frug at Malibu like in the movies, oh no. This is Myrtle Beach, filled with dangerous bikers and gang members and hot mamas and escaped convicts and god knows who else (best not to ask), all cruising for kicks. It's after midnight but the heat still lingers from a blistering day. Except for a small bonfire, the dark is all-enveloping; couples vanish into it and you'd best be looking elsewhere. At the fire, some guy's carving his initials into his hand with a pen knife, and two babes are noodle-dancing to the waves, or maybe just the voices in their heads. They need music, dammit. Just then, a cloud of dust materializes at the far end of the boardwalk, heading your way, getting closer by the minute. As it approaches, you can just make out the silhouette of a rather large man atop a little motor scooter, some crazy looking guitar slung over his shoulder. Who IS this guy? The scooter chugs to a stop at your feet, and off steps the only musician in the known world who could play this party without having the shit kicked out of him. Bo Diddley.
He plugs in, kicks off a scorching guitar riff. The band falls in. And the place goes totally batshit. Miraculously, someone thought to bring along a tape recorder. The result: Bo Diddley's Beach Party, the absolute pinnacle of vicarious musical thrills. Presented in its original, glorious, Distort-O-Phonic mono, this sweaty grungefest kicks ass from start to finish.
Lots of albums claim to be essential, groundbreaking, and all that crap, and pointyheaded rock crits fawn over cosmic lyrical brainfarts and diminished ninths and such. Bo Ddiddley's Beach Party just kicks sand in their faces and dares you not to dance.
Sundazed earnestly believes that you have no business calling yourself a rock 'n roll fan, an r&b maven, or even a sentient human being unless this album is in your collection, that's how crucial it is. In fact, don't even talk to us until it's in your hands. We mean it.1. Memphis

PathologyThe sound of Oakland, CA''s Trails and Ways is a fascinating mix of the melancholy of bossa nova, the fearlessness of basement indie rock, driving grooves from the end of disco, and the slick shine of radio pop. Their songs never shy away from personal and political heavy-lifting, but this is some of the most compelling pop music we''ve heard in some time. Call it what you will; hearing it is like stumbling into the warmth of an intimate dance party among smart and thoughtful friends. Pheel PhreeFormerly the man behind Jookabox, DMA (aka David Moose Adamson) began
his career as a one-man-band in the grand old tradition of the 'one-man-band'
(re: man with a bass-drum on his back and a monkey clapping symbols, collecting
change from the crowd etc.). With Pheel Phree, to some extent, Adamson has
returned to his roots. Except this time, the result sounds more like a creepy
basement dance party.
DMA's debut full-length provides a uniquely beat-driven, meditative clamor. At
times danceable and at times ethereal, the self-produced LP is intriguingly
dicult to pinpoint. James-Ferraro-sensibilities are coupled with the artisticallyfree-approach of Captain-Beefheart, resulting in 33 minutes of a rather otherworldly tunes. Pheel Phree eectively introduces the world to the weirdness

Ms Pretzel is a 4 track, 20-minute EP of brand new material
by Eric Copeland (Black Dice, Terrestrial Tones). This
is Eric's return to DFA after the release of an acclaimed
single on Ron Morelli's underground dance juggernaut
L.I.E.S., which followed his beloved 2013 album "Joke In
The Hole", his solo debut for DFA. The music on Ms Pretzel
most certainly continues to break new sonic ground, a
process which has gradually unfolded over the last few
years via many prior works on seminal underground
labels such as Underwater Peoples, Escho, Post Present
Medium, and Catsup Plate, among many others. Ms
Pretzel takes Eric's outsider fascination with 4/4 dance
music and twists it yet again. It is the sound of Eric
Copeland throwing a wobbly dance party in a junkyard.

ADAD-AST-8617xRoberts & Lord
EponymousA supercombo team-up between Simon Lord (ex Simian) and Rafter Roberts, the Roberts & Lord duo present their Asthmatic Kitty debut, Eponymous. Roberts rough and grimy (yet complexly arranged) analog backing tracks paired with Lords clean, digitally-recorded vocals, gives these songs a tricky kind of depth that is immediately engaging.
This effortless juxtaposition reigns throughout these 35 some-odd minutes. The album begins with Mosquito, a perfect example and touchstone of Roberts loud, garage rocky, blown-outness paired with structure well-thought-out (but never lingered upon). Simons lyrics tell the story of a mans love for a mosquito, his vocals backed by a crunchy oil-drum thunk of beats (a theme of this record.) Simons lyric writing on Mosquito sets the tone for what's to come and the tone is fun.
Influenced by verse poets like Ivor Cutler and Edward Lear, Lord gives us a simple, light-hearted return to innocence, a goodly love for good love, the capital F feel-goodness compressed into a chorus, the sweaty exuberance of a solid dance party with all your friends around you.1. Mosquito

"This album was recorded live to analog tape in studios in Philadelphia and St. Louis. We used live drums, guitar, bass, Hammond organ, upright piano, analog synths, live percussion, and live horns from the group Rubblebucket, then peppered in electronic elements. The project was mixed through an analog process to give it a deep richness. These songs were written over the course of the past 2 years and road-tested across the country. The Magik Sounds of The Pine Hill HaintsThe Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints ventures
softly into the cool, dark whisper of the haunted south. Short,
tight spun rhymes about silver quarters and vampires come
from a late evening session in a small pink house in south
Alabama, located next to an old Native American mound of
shells and bones, recorded at low volume with red eyes and
open windows. This is the 4th Halloween dance party long
player the Haints have cut for K.
Mrs Pac-Man sets the theme...although this record is
quicker and faster, Buddy Holly pop driven than most other

sweethearts, the day finished, done, another one in the
books, and the great burden of living in a modern nightmare
almost, almost felt like it had been lifted...the sweet early

ConfessTwin Shadow, the creative moniker of George Lewis Jr., presents his second album, Confess. Self-produced and with mixing duties handled by Michael H. Brauer (Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney), the 10-song set finds Lewis Jr. doing what he does best; remembering and reinventing, and fashioning a soundtrack which sounds refreshingly and distinctly modern. The first track to be taken from Confess is the anthemic Five Seconds.
Confess is the follow up to Twin Shadow's 2010 debut breakout album Forget of which Pitchfork, giving the album an 8.4 'Best New Music' review stated, "The songs may be catchy, but their intricacy and thoughtful storytelling makes them stick. And for its impressive sonic sheen, the album's skillful restraint makes it sound better with every spin."
Over the course of the past two years George Lewis Jr, has toured the US and the world virtually non-stop, amassing fans everywhere. His live shows are one big dance party; Spin described them best calling them a freewheeling full-band boogie fest. The tracks grew exponentially at every turn. Canned kits became crushing drums, bass burbles became serious bumps, sound effects became walls of synth, and Lewis transformed into a dance-driven taskmaster." In addition to the studio albums, the collection also features a bonus disc that gathers up nine essential tracks that didn't appear on proper albums, including the 1973 single "Pool Hall Richard," a live performance of the Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain" from the 1973 Reading Festival, and "Dishevelment Blues," a song that came free as a flexi-disc in copies of the British music publication, New Music Express.LP1

Louden Up Now!!! brings a punk aesthetic to the style-over-substance world of dance music with this release. Slithering bass lines, driving percussion, echo-laden guitar, and call-and-response vocals come together to create some of the dopest jams you're likely to hear in 2004 and beyond. Take all the parts of disco that don't suck, mix in a dash of post-whatever aural experimentation, and voila! Instant bicoastal dance party--Village Voice.1. Delightfully Campy, Intentionally Goofy, Lyrically Kitschy: 1979 Set Is Nothing But a Good Time
Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI (America's Best Record Plant): LP Bursts Forth With the Color and Vibrancy of the Brilliant Pop Within
Boffo! Beehive hairdos, goofy sci-fi humor, lava-lamp kitsch, thrift-store fashions, party-starting tunes, unconventional perspectives, and the unique blending of the underground aesthetic with mainstream accessibility: The B-52s mix all this and more into a dizzying cocktail on their self-titled debut, which remains one of the most ahead-of-its-time, endlessly enjoyable, and vividly colorful albums ever released.
The B-52s has its roots in the bands improbable genesis, itself reflective of the records gleeful moods and quirky charms. The five members first played after sharing a tropical alcoholic beverage at a Chinese restaurant, the ironic silliness and spontaneous irreverence indicative of the music on its breakthrough record. Not to mention how it mirrors the unusual hodgepodge of instrumentation: organs, walkie talkies, bongos, glockenspiels, tambourines, toy pianos, smoke alarms, and more!
Musically, the band proves just as adventurous and whimsical. Using pleasant harmonies as a backdrop and Kate Piersons squealing organ as a starting point, the B-52s draw upon surf-rock grooves, beach-bound soul-pop, herky-jerky funk riffs, minimalist rhythms, and Ricky Wilsons unusual guitar lines to craft songs that tower above the sarcastic suggestiveness and campy declarations. Of course, the latter are plenty entertaining on their own, but theres no denying the dance-bound persuasiveness and melodic shimmy associated with the classic cult single Rock Lobster and splendid cover of the ubiquitous Petula Clark standard Downtown. Youve never heard anything like this.
Indeed, the B-52s were about a decade ahead of the alt-rock revolution when they recorded this delightfully campy, intentionally goofy, lyrically tawdry, and undeniably harmonic 1979 new-wave set that comes off as the best dance party you might ever hear. This is 40 minutes of nothing but a good time.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI (America's best record plant), Silver Label numbered limited edition LP presents the B-52s brilliant debut in a fidelity its never previously enjoyed. So detailed and realistic are the timbres, accents, and harmonies, youll think the bands bright outfits are appearing right in front of you. Plus, the LP is worth the cost alone for the iconic album cover, which spotlights those bouffant dos.
