WARB-NON-3335xThe Black Keys
El CaminoReviewing The Black Keys' 2010 Top Ten breakthrough album Brothers, Rolling Stone called the duo a two-man combo with a big-band mind. That description seems downright prophetic now. With the hard-rocking El Camino, The Black Keys' fourth Nonesuch release, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney conjure up an exhilarating, stadium-sized sound in collaboration with producer and friend Danger Mouse. El Camino boasts a no-nonsense brilliance: The pace is fast, the mood is upbeat, the choruses unfailingly addictive made for shouting along, preferably in a large, sweaty crowd.
A band already at the top of its game has gotten even better. And The Black Keys have done pretty damn well so far this year, with three 2011 Grammy awards for Brothers under their belt, an MTV Video Music Award for Tighten Up, more than 850,000 copies of Brothers sold in the U.S., and upwards of a million units worldwide, plus innumerable licensing placements in film, TV, and commercials. El Camino features one stand-out track after another, such as first single Lonely Boy, Gold on the Ceiling, and the surprising, acoustic-guitar-driven, tempo-shifting Little Black Submarines.
This record is more straight ahead rock and roll raw, driving, and back to basics, says Auerbach. As Carney has put it, The Black Keys respect the past while being in the present, and that formula has made them sound like nothing less than the future of rock and roll. While the largely self-produced Brothers, recorded at the famed Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama, had a more soul and blues-oriented sound, El Camino often recalls the blitzkrieg-paced British-style rock of the 1960s and 70s, post-Beatles and pre-punk: artists like T-Rex, The Sweet, and Gary Glitter, along with the heavier swing of such bands as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
The references are there, but the sound is very much contemporary and utterly their own, equally informed by The Black Keys' passion for hip hop and R&B and bolstered by the atmospheric production approach of Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), who was behind the boards for 2008's Attack & Release and collaborated with them on the funky Tighten Up for Brothers. As Auerbach notes, Brian understands all the different kinds of music we're into. He's got really great ideas about melody and song structure. For him it's all about the song. Also rejoining them is consistently innovative mixing engineer Tchad Blake, who Auerbach calls a genius with audio, a complete wizard.
El Camino arrives just in time to serve as the ideal holiday gift for The Black Keys' rapidly growing fan base. It came together quickly in an unfettered burst of creativity by the hard-charging pair. They recorded these 11 tracks between tour dates for Brothers at Auerbach's new Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, where he and Carney have now relocated after years of working in their native Akron, Ohio. The duo plans to embark on a six week European Tour at the start of the New Year, with U.S. dates to follow shortly thereafter-including several arenas.
In a time of global austerity, The Black Keys work simply and efficiently, with a minimum of tools and a wealth of ideas, to produce the richest, fattest, coolest music around. Upon the release of Brothers last year, Britain's Uncut magazine called them one of the best rock'n'roll bands on the planet, and El Camino, confirms that.1. Lonely Boy

Dark Night Of The SoulDark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins/Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt.
Rumors of this mysterious collaborative project began to circulate in early 2009 sparking widespread anticipation and excitement. Now, following months of talks, Danger Mouse and EMI announce that Dark Night Of The Soul will be released worldwide.
While this beautiful, haunting record being made widely and legitimately available is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, the news is shadowed by sadness following the recent passing of Mark Linkous, who released and performed under the Sparklehorse pseudonym. Dark Night Of The Soul will now stand as a defacto tribute to this well-loved, stunningly talented yet often-overlooked artist.
In addition to be featured on two songs, celebrated film director David Lynch has created a series of original photographs for Dark Night Of The Soul adding a spectacular visual dimension that will be incorporated in to the artwork for this already unparalleled project.LP 1

When James Mercer of the Shins got together with Brian Burton AKA Danger Mouse, the result became more than the sum of its parts. Plans for their collaboration were made since 2004 but first blossomed into their first single "The High Road" in 2009. An album had to follow, so in 2010 Broken Bells was released to great critical and popular acclaim. The duo avoided sounding too much like their own individual styles: Danger Mouse laid off the samples, playing drums, organs and keys himself.
Mercer stretched his vocal cords into falsetto range, at times. Their creative energies gel like no other contemporary collaboration. This addictive record is built to last. We can only hope there's more magic in the works by these modern time geniuses.1. The High Road

The Last LaughThe Last Laugh is the debut album from U.K. based Joker's Daughter, featuring vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Helena Costas. This fresh folk-pop excursion reveals new facets of the renowned artist and producer Danger Mouse, who collaborates with Costas throughout.
Born in London to Greek Cypriot parents, Helena learned violin from ages 7 to 13. Later, she taught herself guitar and keyboards. All the while, she developed a unique inner language and logic, rich with unconscious resonance, mythic allusions and complex food analogies. She wrote songs incessantly, and learned the art of production, using the studio as an instrument. Meanwhile, she developed her confidence by playing constant gigs around London, where she faced demanding audiences and learned to improvise.
In 2003, she began mailing her home recordings to the esteemed artist and producer Danger Mouse. As his international fame grew, the pair kept in touch. They discovered a natural affinity and decided to collaborate, naming their project Joker's Daughter after one of Helena's many porous artistic personae. Helena describes Joker's Daughter as a dualistic character who draws from the serious to turn it into humor.
Helena's striking melodies and rich, sensory lyrics reveal the depth, passion and prankishness in her psyche. Danger Mouse collaborates fully at every stage, contributing his farsighted skills as a songwriter, producer and musician. The result is an intoxicating, disorienting blend of folk music from some strange, timeless, uncharted dream world. The project also features the horns of Neutral Milk Hotel's Scott Spillane and the string arrangements of frequent Danger Mouse collaborator Daniele Luppi.

Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts was created in collaboration with producer Brian Danger Mouse Burton, best known as the producing ace for Gnarls Barkley with singer Cee Lo Green. Jones and Danger Mouse wrote all of the material for the album together at the producer's studio in Los Angeles, and the duo performed all of the instruments themselves. This is their second time working together - Jones previously appeared as a vocalist on Rome, Danger Mouse's collaboration with Italian composer Daniele Luppi. Though Little Broken Hearts is the result of a partnership between Jones and Danger Mouse, the record will be credited only to her.
The album's sound ranges from experimental chamber serenades to stark, electronic-embellished confessions. It's obviously very different than anything Norah's ever done, Burton says. I don't know what people will think - I hope they like it, and she doesn't lose a bunch of fans.
I'd never gone in with nothing and wrote songs from scratch, and I'd never played bass before on a record, Jones told Rolling Stone. I was out of my comfort zone - but I was comfortable because we're friends.
Adds Burton, The best thing was having just the two of us on those first sessions, not a whole band. Norah had as many, if not more, great ideas than I did.
One of the boldest departures is Take It Back, which features fuzzed-out guitars and spooky, distorted vocals. I never knew how to get weird sounds, Jones says. It was all about finding a balance between those effects and making sure my voice was clear and sounded like me.
In its own quiet way, Little Broken Hearts hews closer to heartbreak classics like Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear than to anything in Jones' back catalog, Rolling Stone reports, This time, I've been way less concerned with self-editing, Jones says. I'm not sad, but there's a lot of hurt in there. And it felt great to say what I felt and put it down on tape. Doing that made me so happy! This album is all about saying things that needed to be said.

The songs, written by Andrew Savage and Austin Brown but elevated to even greater heights by the dynamic rhythmic propulsion of Max Savage (drums) and Sean Yeaton (bass), are filled with their traditional punk rock passion, as well as a lyrical tenderness. After The DiscoWhen Shins frontman James Mercer teamed up with producer Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse for a track on the pair's Dark Night Of The Soul project, it seemed farfetched to assume that we'd see any further collaboration from its members, especially following Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous' suicide shortly thereafter. But to our delight and surprise, the surviving duo went on to form Broken Bells in 2009, and since then have delivered an album and an EP to the world before fading back into the night. Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) has stayed busy in the meantime, producing albums for Portugal. The Man, The Black Keys, and U2, while Mercer poured his focus into a new Shins album and subsequent tour cycle. But now that all those side projects are behind the iconic artists, the duo is ready to give the world another welcomed surprise - their sophomore LP, After The Disco. And if that album title isn't enough of an indicator of the group's surprising new direction, the Bee Gees-esque backing vocals are certainly telling.

WARB-NON-87xThe Black Keys
Attack & ReleaseUntil now, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys took an extreme do-it-yourself approach to record making, hunkering down in a basement studio or setting up equipment in one of the abandoned factories of their native Akron, Ohio. Their modus operandi was more seance than session. With a minimal set of tools, they conjured up a big, swaggering blues-rock sound, seemingly drawn from some distant time and place yet too weirdly original to ever be called retro. As Rolling Stone put it in a review of their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, Pure blues rock of this caliber is really timeless.
For this album, however, the Black Keys decided not to go it alone: Attack and Release is the result of one of the most audacious and eagerly awaited collaborations in alternative rock history. As producer, Auerbach and Carney chose Danger Mouse, the mega-eclectic sonic mastermind behind the Grammy Award-winning Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere and its multi-format hit, Crazy, as well as the music-industry provocateur who created the mother of all mash-ups, The Grey Album. The Black Keys also deigned to work at an established studio, albeit one within driving distance of Akron. Suma Recording, a legendary spot in northeast Ohio renowned for its supply of great vintage gear, provided just the right ambience for the guys. As Carney put it, with genuine affection, Suma smells like a moldy cabin and looks like a haunted house.
On Attack and Release, Danger Mouse is more creative co-conspirator than traditional figure behind the boards. He doesn't radically alter the duo's sound so much as coax out more of its inherent soulfulness, groove and bittersweet emotion. Two versions of Remember When illustrate how the duo can swing easily from smoldering ballad to thrashing rocker. I'm more pleased with the sound of this record than any one we've ever made, says Carney, and Auerbach concurs: We never let it all go like we did for this one, anything was game. It was just fun to make, and that's why I think it's so successful. The band adds more instrumentation to their mix, including piano, organ and moog synthesizer. Danger Mouse fashions subtle special effects, like the ghostly background choir that surfaces on the moody I Got Mine, which sounds as if it were samples from some old Warner Bros. cartoon. The Black Keys also invited in a few special guests: guitarist Marc Ribot and clarinetist-flautist (and Pat's uncle) Ralph Carney, both veterans of Tom Waits' band and players on countless avant-rock/jazz/noise session. Jessica Lea Mayfield a/k/a Chittlin, an impressive 18 year-old bluegrass/country singer from Kent, Ohio, sings alongside a heart-breakingly plaintive Auerbauch on the slow-dance final cut, Things Ain't Like They Used to Be1. Little Broken Hearts is the stunning and musically diverse new break-up album from Norah Jones and fifth full-length of her storied career. The 12-song set was produced by Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) and features original tracks co-written by Jones and Burton. The album is preceded by the lead single Happy Pills which ushers in a parade of sunshiny hooks and surprised both Jones and Burton from the moment they wrote it: "We didn't know if it fit on the record. But I couldn't stop singing it, and neither could Brian. explains Jones. Eventually we decided it was too much fun, it had to be there."
In addition to Jones and Burton, the album includes contributions from Blake Mills, Gus Seyffert, Joey Waronker, Heather McIntosh, the Sonus Quartet, Dan Elkin, Jonathan Hischke, Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi. Little Broken Hearts' artwork draws inspiration from the vintage movie posters that adorn Burton's Los Angeles studio and is loosely based on the poster for the 1965 Russ Meyer film Mudhoney.
Little Broken Hearts' is the fascinating next step in the artistic evolution of one of the music world's most consistently intriguing singer/songwriters. Jones first emerged on the world stage 10 years ago with the 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self-described "moody little record" that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from the prevailing synthetic pop music of the time. Come Away With Me has just become the 10th best-selling album of the Soundscan era and has sold 25 million copies worldwide.
Since then, Jones has released three more critically acclaimed and commercially successful solo albums with Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007) and The Fall (2009), as well as two albums with her country collective The Little Willies.
The 2010 compilation Featuring Norah Jones showed her to possess an incredibly versatile voice by collecting her collaborations with artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Outkast, Herbie Hancock and the Foo Fighters. Jones previously collaborated with Danger Mouse on his acclaimed 2011 album Rome, a valentine to classic Italian film score music that also featured Jack White.1. Good Morning

Modern Guilt (Discontinued)Import
Modern Guilt is the eighth official studio album and eleventh overall by American alternative artist Beck. The album lasts 33 minutes, making it the shortest album by Beck to date. Modern Guilt features two contributions by Cat Power and was produced by Beck and Danger Mouse.
Modern Guilt indulges Beck's love of Sixties psychedelic music, and the results are vividly rendered - all acid-trip guitars, mod dance-party beats, daisy-chain harmonies and thundering percussion. But beneath the DayGlo arrangements lie some deeply bummed-out songs about living in a time of war (Walls), environmental degradation (Gamma Ray) and widening generation gaps (Youthless). Danger Mouse brings a hip-hop DJ's love of funky old rock records; Beck brings the end-of-the-Sixties, pre-apocalyptic hangover.
Taken as a whole, the album's first five songs stand among Beck's strongest work. The most dazzling example is Chemtrails, which nods through a heroin haze of droning guitars while Beck imagines jets flying above a sea full of dead people. The song title comes from a conspiracy theory that holds that some jet trails are actually chemical sprays engineered by the government for secret purposes. But you don't have to know the reference to feel the dread. Staring at the corpses, Beck sings, So many people, where do they go? The morbid answer is implied: No matter where all the lonely people come from, they all end up in the same place.
That last song sums up Beck's biggest issue on the album: Don't know what I've done, but I feel ashamed. That's modern guilt for you: knowing the world's going to hell and feeling partly responsible, but not quite knowing what to do about it. Some days, we're worse than you can imagine/And how am I supposed to live with that? he sings on Walls. A few lines later, he finds his own reason to carry on: We do the best with the souls we're given. And not long after he sings these words, the song cuts out abruptly in the middle of the melody. Like Tony Soprano said, you never know when your time is gonna come.

Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle AlbumResistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album is a musical companion to the hit Amazon Prime Video Original Series The Man in The High Castle, based on author Philip K. Dick's award-winning book. Set in 1962, the series explores an alternative history of what it would be like if the Allied Powers had actually lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. In the storyline, the Germans now have control the Eastern seaboard, the Japanese the west coast, and in between is a small strip of land controlled by neither. This neutral zone is the refuge of holdouts, revolutionaries and rebels trying to keep the American dream alive through both active and passive resistance, and from where Resistance Radio is broadcasting.
Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album is produced and curated by Danger Mouse and Sam Cohen, and is the imagined soundtrack to the series, and features 18 songs from 1962 to coincide with theme of show. Bringing together the talents of today s most popular Indie and Alternative artists, the project features Beck, Kelis, Norah Jones, The Shins, Angel Olsen, Benjamin Booker, Karen O, and many more.LP 1

The Babe Rainbow (Aus)Australia's The Babe Rainbow are happy to announce they have signed to 30th Century Records, the label spearheaded by Danger Mouse. The band are set to release their debut self-titled album.
Recorded in magicland Byron Bay where the band is based, and produced by Stu Mackenzie of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Babe Rainbow's first LP is a think piece, stories from the dreamtime, all the colors of the rainbow. As with the album's teaser track Losing Something (Is Finding Something Else) and Peace Blossom Boogy, expect timeless swirling sound and endless good vibes, cool cat vibes, and similar whirly-birding up and on.
The seeds of The Babe Rainbow were sown when Jack Cool-Breeze and Angus Darling The Hothouse Flower started a song writing partnership in middle school, but the band didn't fully-bloom until late in 2015 when, travelling through France, the duo met Venezuelan pianist Lu-Lu-Felix Domingo and became a trio. The band has previously released a self-titled EP featuring the single Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest.1. Losing Something
