    Songs For Distingue Lovers

...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen! Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

It is undeniable that Billie Holiday's singing changed in her later years. Her voice darkened and shifted to a lower range. Her economy of means distilled her sound to its expressive essence - a kind of heightened speech. The classic LP Songs For Distingue Lovers has also deepened and become burnished with time. Maybe it's that still-arresting word, distingue; maybe it's that iconic, tinted image of Lady Day on the cover. But now that legendary LP, with the singer's best studio work of the Fifties, is available at 45 RPM!

    Lay It On Down

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is already considered to be at the forefront of contemporary blues. This time around, Kenny applied his talents to writing by woodshedding with several prominent Nashville hit songwriting teams (Keith Stegall, Mark Selby & Tia Sillers, Marshall Altman, Dylan Altman & Danny Myrick). Marrying these songs with his trademark guitar-playing will help expand his already growing base. The album is produced by Marshall Altman (Natasha Bedingfield, Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegele, Amy Grant).

    Correcto

Correcto is a Glaswegian super art-group collaboration that includes a member of Franz Ferdinand as well as a member of labelmates The Royal We. However, this project is about the sum of its parts and the songwriting charms of lead singer Danny Saunders, who pens bittersweet songs about chocolate and girls that is equal parts Vaselines, The Kinks and Pete Shelley after Howard Devoto split town. Inspired by the mundane, the fantastical, mawkish behaviour and hangovers; the result is an exemplary album of necessarily direct and unhampered songs, which are somehow familiar yet humanly original swipes at modern pop music.

    Good Will Hunting

...the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting doesn't strive for fake urban cool; this film about white, working-class Bostonians gets a mostly white, working-class sound. The soundtrack effectively mirrors the half-filled desires and lives that the film capitalizes on: restlessness, ennui, doubt, and unrequited love rule here. Elliot Smith contributes the most, and the best, songs, beautiful weepers that outshine Danny Elfman's somber original score, which makes only a few appearances. --Alan E. Rapp

The soundtrack to Tim Burton's neo classic moving picture Big Fish (2003), starring Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Lange, collects classic Pop songs and a score of longtime collaborator Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks! and others).

The 2LP soundtrack also contains a new song from Pearl Jam, specifically written for the movie: Man of the Hour. The soundtrack's Pop songs range from Bing Crosby's early-'30s Jazz hit Dinah to the '50s nostalgia of Buddy Holly's Everyday and Elvis Presley's All Shook Up, right up to the '60s and '70s recollections of Canned Heat's Let's Work Together and Ramblin' Man by the Allman Brothers Band.

Pfarmers is the new project from Danny Seim (Menomena, Lackthereof), Bryan Devendorf
(The National), and Dave Nelson (David Byrne & St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens).

Danny and Bryan have been friends since The National and Menomena toured together
in the early 2000s. Their paths crossed several times since then, most recently backstage
at a festival, where Bryan showed Danny some severly damaged, synth-affected
drumbeats he had recorded with his friend Dave, sho was currently playing horns in David
Byrne's band. Shortly after, Pfarmers was born.

According to Seim, "The record is about a dream I had where I'm reluctantly accepting a
fear of drowning by focusing on being reincarnated as a giant Gunnera plant, which thrive
on the banks of rivers (specifically the Jordan River i.e. the Biblical promised land) after I
paint myself gold and sink to the bottom like the El Dorado of South American folklore."

Despite the notoriety of it's members, Pfarmers sounds unlike anything they've produced
before. The first track "Benthos" is a sprawling ambient piece comprised of looping,
layered horns. The album then launches into a set of pop songs, reminiscent of Lackthereof
(Danny's solo project), as played by Kraftwerk. Devendorf's trademark drum style is
present, but here they're filtered so heavily as to sound mechanical. Seim contributes
layered vocals, and thick bass brooves, while Nelson provides complex spatial arrangements.

It's a diverse record, switching swiftly between catchy pop songs and long instrumental
breaks. It's a rich and rewarding album, for those willing to dive in.

Everything But The Girl was an English musical duo, formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, and singer Ben Watt.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything But The Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between Pop and Electronica.

Idlewild (1988), their most accessible recording, consists of eleven intimate songs. The setting is perfect for such moving compositions as Love Is Here Where I Live and Apron Strings. The album spawned the single I Don't Want to Talk About It, a poignant cover of a song by the late Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten which became EBTG's biggest hit to date, landing at the number three spot on the British charts. Beetlejuice Soundtrack

    Reissue

Danny Elfman provides one of his most quintessentially Elfman-esque scores for one of Tim Burton's most quintessentially Burton-esque movies, Beetlejuice. The film's dark yet sardonically funny Main Titles is among Elfman's all-time best moments, bustling along with a dark joie de vivre (or is it joie de morte?) that defines the spooky fun of both this movie, and his collaboration with Burton. The score's stylized world also includes the ironically perky Travel Music; Incantation, a tensely percussive cue that unfolds into exaggerated brass and ghostly vocals and organs; and the eerily pretty but still whimsical Lydia Discovers. The tip-toeing pizzicato strings and pianos, and the theatrical brass, organs, harps, and percussion that appear on every track -- most definitively on tracks like Enter...The Family / Sand Worm Planet -- underline the film's live-action cartoonishness, with the music's hyperactive shifts, and the addition of Harry Belafonte's Jump In Line and Banana Boat Song (Day-O) just adding another layer of quirkiness to the whole thing. A perfect mix of silliness and spookiness, Beetlejuice remains one of Elfman's most consistent scores.

    Edward Scissorhands Soundtrack

Edward Scissorhands is a 1990 American romantic dark fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The film shows the story of an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation who has scissors for hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim.

Edward Scissorhands is the fourth feature film collaboration between director Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman. The orchestra consisted of 79 musicians. Elfman cites Scissorhands as epitomizing his most personal and favorite work. In addition to Elfman's music, three Tom Jones songs also appear: It's Not Unusual, Delilah and With These Hands.

    Angels Watching Over Me

"I was very reluctant to put this stuff out because there's a ton of rootsy cornballs out there doing this kind of stuff and all of them play guitar way better than me. But I think I have something here that doesn't really
sound like anything else. The numbers that bounce really bounce. The numbers that drone really drone. I'm excited about this." -Danny Kroha

As a mainstay on the Detroit music scene for over thirty years, Danny Kroha has consistently pushed himself to reinvention. As founding member of garage legends the Gories, he's influenced countless imitators and poseurs. His axe work with Rocket 455 is the most quintessentially "Detroit" rock and roll this side of the MC5. And his turn as a pastied playgirl in the Demolition Doll Rods proved that even in drag, he was undeniably solid. So with his first full-length release under his own name, it may come as an unexpected turn that he's dealing in classic gospel and folk songs. Playing every instrument himself, spanning guitar, banjo, baritone dulcimer, diddley bow, washtub bass, jug and mouth organ, the end result is a collection of
compelling, timeless traditional songs. Angels Watching Over Me is the real deal, seeming that it could've been recorded at any time over the past 70 years. With this album, Kroha firmly establishes himself as one of the pre-eminent practitioners of a genre in desperate need of someone with his creativity and vision in moving forward the classic American art form.

Wake Up is the debut album by indie pop band Youngblood Hawke.

The album's title (Wake Up) was inspired by Danny McGuire, a friend of the Youngblood Hawke band members. One day he was riding his bike home and got hit by a drunk driver. He was in a coma for a really long time. Youngblood Hawke wrote their song Dannyboy for him.

    Go With Me

The music of Seapony is refreshing in its simplicity. Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to Dreaming, the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long.

Seapony is songwriter Danny Rowland, singer Jen Weidl and bass player Ian Brewer. Danny and Ian grew up and made music together in Oklahoma. In 2001, they moved to Olympia, WA. In 2004, Danny visited Cincinnati, missed his flight home, and ended up staying in Ohio for four years; he met Jen during his Buckeye State sojourn. After a period of work and study in Lawrence, KS, the happy couple came west in 2010 and were reunited with Ian in Seattle. Seapony was born.

Although Danny has composed many originals over the years, Dreaming was the only finished Seapony tune when he and Jen arrived in the Emerald City; the rest of the songs featured on Go With Me were written afterward. The vision for Seapony became focused around fuzz-drenched simple guitar chord progressions, topped with concise melodic hooks and Jen's breathy vocals.

    Lewis Del Mar

Rockaway Beach, NY duo Lewis Del Mar have announced details for their self-titled debut LP via Columbia Records. All of the album's 10 tracks were written and recorded by members Danny Miller and Max Harwood in their shared 400 sq ft bungalow in Rockaway Beach. The songs take inspiration from the gritty coastline the creative companions call home. What started as experimenting with samples of Latin percussion tones evolved into a capturing of the rhythms of daily New York life - iPhone notes and subway sounds, the crank of a turnstile or laughter from a nearby pub - to create a collision of influence and environment, an experimental pop cohesion uniquely their own.

    The Mountain Has Fallen EP

'The Mountain Has Fallen EP features collaborations with Nas, Danny Brown, Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price and a brand new solo composition.

'The Mountain Has Fallen' starts with Systematic, DJ Shadow and Nas' first-ever collaboration together. The song debuted during the season premiere of HBO's Silicon Valley in April. Horror Show finds Shadow and Danny Brown collaborating for the first time over a jagged, haunting soundscape. Good News is a brand new composition, reminiscent of some of Shadow's more free-form, fractured work found on 2016's 'The Mountain Will Fall' full-length.

The EP closes with Corridors, a piece featuring Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price (who scored the 'Gravity' film). Shadow is a massive fan of his work, and Price wrote and programmed the string parts on the song.

From the start of my last album, I envisioned collaborating with other instrumentalists who operate outside of the bass and hip-hop realms, ultimately working with the amazing Nils Frahm and Matthew Halsall. Like many, I had always been enthralled by the soundtrack for the film 'Gravity,' and went about connecting with Steven purely as a fan. I was overjoyed when the opportunity to combine on a song came to pass. His ability to harness orchestral elements and join them with a sound design aesthetic made my contributions seem almost effortless, which is the mark of a fruitful partnership. - DJ Shadow, on Corridors

Turns out sometimes you should meet your heroes. Working with Josh to create 'Corridors,' hearing musical ideas and phrases come back to me twisted and skewed through the filter of his unique sensibilities, was an amazing experience. The mark of a good collaboration is when the track heads off in a direction you could never have imagined when working on your own, and no one puts a track together like DJ Shadow. It was an honour to work with him. - Steven Price, on Corridors

    Tonight's The Night

By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of Tonight's the Night, he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians.

Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of why? Even the relative party songs, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown and Roll Another Number, fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. -Steve Knopper

    Why? (Awaiting Repress)

At last! TMBG is returning to the world of kids stuff! You might have heard some of the tracks previewed on Dial-A-Song, but we can now confirm the arrival of a fantastic set of 18 new songs called Why? What kind of album is Why? Well, it's not bad for you but it's not good for you either. It's just about fun, like TMBG's first kids album No! Why? is memorable songs in family-friendly package with none of that pandering aftertaste.

Like previous TMBG kid productions it's a family affair with John Flansburgh's wife Robin "Goldie" Goldwasser singing a couple of tracks, while bassist Danny Weinkauf, joined by his daughter, steps up to the mic for the song Elephants. Alison Cowles, the daughter longtime video animation collaborator David Cowles (The Mesopotamians, We Live in a Dump, Science is Real) has contributed all the illustrations for the album. Right out of the gate TMBG hits the listener with the odd brilliance of "Oh You Did" through the folkie charm of "Out of A Tree," the full rocking of "Or So I Have Read" the perky "I Just Want to Dance," and wrapping things up with the optimism of "Then The Kids Took Over." Why? has everything to delight both kids and parents.
