Double StarLimited Edition
Just ten years ago, Rick Rizzo and Tara Key put the finishing touches on their Thrill Jockey debut, Dark Edson Tiger, did a few live shows including All Tomorrow's Parties at Camber Sands, and jubilantly declared the whole affair a rousing success, vowing to ride the tsunami swell of momentum into their next project.
And now, in a Van Winkle like-daze, they are back, a new batch of instrumental collaborations ready to test the brave new decade. It would be easy to say that they simply wanted to wait out the debacle of poor government and unmitigated corporate greed, but truth be told, the seeds for Double Star were sown in early live New York City sessions with bassist Tim Harris not long after the Dark Edson dust had settled. These let-the-tape-roll sessions produced some of the guitar psychedelia that long-time observers might have expected from these two, including the epic tracks that now comprise Noisy Attic as well as the genesis of Interruptive Organ.
The DNA for this album of course lies in their respective Kentucky punk rock roots, but a lot of living has been done between then and now. Double Star is a barrel-aged kind of record, sometimes inviting small fragrant sips, but sometimes asking you to knock one back and burn the throat a little. Worth waiting a decade for.1. Dark PlaceSome singers can create a mood far before the first syllables of lyric have been
woven into a full story; a tone, mixed to dissolve perfectly into music, can say it
all. Such is the case with Jessie Baylin, whose ethereal voice shoots the opening
notes of Dark Place, her fourth album, into instant emotive territory - it envelops
in a mysterious gauze, setting the stage for what is her most raw, personal
work yet and also her most thrilling.
Baylin's always been adept at capturing the fragile, complex state of
human relationships with a hand that understands the middle ground - things
aren't always what they seem, and she isn't afraid to play in that treacherous territory.
She often weaves a forlorn lyric with an optimistic vocal lick, or a cheerier
song with a foreboding crunch of guitar, looming like a distant thunderstorm; it
sometimes makes it difficult to tell if a track is innately happy or sad, but that's
the point. Dark Place is the epitome of this dichotomy.
It's the combination of elements on Dark Place that make it such a
rattling look into not only Baylin's mind but the human condition: her voice, in its
other-worldly tone that can be both angelic and deeply plaintive, cuts through
poetic lyrics with throbbing guitars that carve scratches at the beautiful surface,
bounding free of both classification and genre. She's Nico, if she could sing like
Nina Simone; she's Dusty Springfield fronting Mazzy Star. "Dusty," she says,
before adding, "on Quaaludes."1. Creepers (Young Love)

Twelve Dark Noons EPHaving expanded from the no-wave two piece of Lucy Cliche and Matthew Hopkins to a fully fleshed out four piece including drummer Lachlan Vercoe and bassist Nic De Jong, our favorite Australian outcasts return with a stunning EP as their follow-up to last years full length Heaps of Nothing. This EP is a bit lighter in mood and delivery; in the words of the bands own Hopkins its a bit like, Dracula fronting the B-52s, and opening track, The Gift is a perfectly modern homage to past dark lords such as Bauhaus and Christian Death.
Twelve Dark Noons serves as a companion piece to the short experimental film of the same name directed by Jacqueline Castel and produced by Night People Records and Caleb Braaten of Sacred Bones. The film has had several premiers worldwide including SXSW and ZedeBois Gallery in Lisbon. It stars the bands core duo Lucy and Matthew in a horrific mental unraveling set in the Australian outback.1. The Gift

Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Starspeaking of air and darkness, Born on a Gangster Star cameinto the world in a big damn hurry, like nightfall on an island. You can see it happening, but then again it's so gradual that thenext thing you know-it's dark.
Imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embersfloating in the atmosphere like fireflies, Shabazz Palacesrecorded this entire album over the course of two weeks withBlood in Seattle. New gear and new equipment disintegratedcomfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the rubble.
Herein the Palaceer continues the tale of Quazar, a sentientbeing from somewhere else, an observer sent here to Amurdercato chronicle and explore as a musical emissary. What he finds inour world is a cutthroat place, a landscape where someone likehim could never quite feel comfortable amidst all the brutalityand alternative facts and death masquerading as connectivity.
Inspired by days on end spent in the waves-water and light,both-of Southern California, the work came to the Palaceer in aflash, like being picked up by something and carried. Alwaysdribbling with his head up, he can see what's going on aroundhim and react to it, rather than starting in a certain direction andhoping to achieve something upon arrival.
What's good?-the kids ask. What does it even mean, and whatdoes it even matter? Who is behind these choices? We are all ofus sitting under a waterfall of all. this. shit. But it's the excessthat is casting us into ruts.
The Palaceer stays away from the fleeting and the superficialnonessential. Stay away from your device-your phantomlimb-and stay away from your image-your phantom self; thatis his decree. Considering the motions behind the things you liketo consume artistically, rather than just the way something looksor sounds, and thinking in layers, and trying to be more considerateand not so self-oriented-this is his medicine for combat.
Born on a Gangster Star flirts with a pop sensibility, but throughthe prism of Shabazz Palaces's fire and fury. For the Palaceer, that sense is all about how the groove is moving, and thesupernatural telepathy that occurs amongst his cohort. Appearinghere, in body or in spirit, are Julian Casablancas, Thundercat,Darrius Willrich, Gamble and Huff, Loud Eyes Lou, Thaddillac,Ahmir, Jon Kirby, Sunny Levine, and Blood. The storybelongs to Quazarz, but the air and darkness belong to us.

REDD-SEA-0316xThe Great Old Ones
EOD: A Tale Of Dark LegacyFrench black metal phenoms THE GREAT OLD ONES return with their new album 'EOD : A Tale Of Dark Legacy'. Steeped in nightmarish Lovecraftian lore, the band once again draw inspiration from the iconic writer to produce cold, gruesome pitch-black metal. Colossal tracks such as "The Shadow over Innsmouth", "Mare Infinitum", and "When the Stars Align" and more emanate tense, horrific atmospheres in a flurry of utterly extreme metal. Reinforced by macabre themes and morose subject matter, THE GREAT OLD ONES have made 'EOD " a truly grim journey and, in doing so, one of the year's most compelling black metal releases.1. Give You The GhostPoliça's debut album, Give You The Ghost, is 11 perfectly formed auto-tuned songs that re-shape the intersection of pop and digitised R&B. And for all Poliça's synthetic manipulation, Channy's soft vocals and Ryan's electronic soundscapes reveal a tender heart beneath, pulsating with life and raw emotion. Give You The Ghost opens with the attention grabbing sonic of first track 'Amongster', the two drummers immediately coming into full effect as it builds to a heady mass of beats, bass and Channy's wandering vocals. 'Violent Games' continues the heavy on the drums theme, with duelling beats that intensify to machine gun-like levels, led by Channy's urgent and cyclical vocals "Tremble at the taste of / Tremble at the taste of / Tremble at the taste of in his hands".
Born out of the break-up of a recent relationship, the majority of Give You The Ghost reflects the difficulty of facing up to your mistakes and making peace with them; an exorcism via exciting new musical possibilities. "The recurring theme of this record is 'what in the hell just happened and who in the hell am I anyways'" says Channy. This redemptive mood is key for the track 'Dark Star', released online late last year amidst a viral whirlwind. Backed by smooth brass breakdowns throughout and mid-tempo loping rhythms, it's typical of Poliça's often meditative content fused with the addictive refrain "Ain't a man who can pull me down from my Dark Star".
First sashaying single proper 'Lay Your Cards Out' and the dreamy 'Wandering Star' both feature Mike Noyce of Bon Iver on vocals and are equally as deliciously funk laden as they are hypnotic, with more ratatat drums from Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, propelling the lush arrangements and slinky bass, provided by Chris Bierden.1. PithAnyone who has seen Emily Beanblossom perform has surely left entirely taken with her. As the lead singer of Christmas, a band whose unique style of psych rock made them a cult marvel, Emily sold out both shows and records, due in no small part to her captivating, cultivated persona and the rare power of her voice. A vagabond for our ilk, she has lived life on the road and in collaborations, drifting down
the line until she was called back to her family farm outside Chicago, Ill. Here she paused to lay down the hollowed noise that would become Ruby Fray. Her premier album Pith is a string of musical gems that range from harmonic americana and folk to shadowy psychedelia, united in their spectral chamber arrangements.
Each of the twelve tracks on Pith come from demos Emily has been keeping close, and showcase her varieties of influence. And the Moon, with its steady drum machine loop, eerie harmonies and mandolin strings stands apart from its follower, Mint Ice Cream, a playful Americana-style duet with Calvin Johnson.Closed Eye is the same, a drifting melody punctuated by tinny drums and fuzzy guitar
strumming. But this is the beauty of Pithlike the single,Lets Grow Older,it gambols, and then fallsto despair and questioning, is both the blossom and the thorny edge. Ruby Fray is a dark star risen, and the power and soul of Emilys voice changes all that it shines upon.
Pith includes the talents of numerous Pacific Northwest masterminds: producer & engineer Ben Hargett (who recorded the Christmas LP), songwriting and production assistant Ian Van Veen (Legs The Crab, Georgy), and harmony/strings specialist Giselle Garcia. As per K / Dub Narcotic tradition, a number of artists from the K roster also play on Pith, including Arrington de Dionyso, Gordon Baker (Mailaikat dan Singa, Desolation Wilderness), Andrew Dorsett (LAKE, Desolation Wilderness), Angelo Spencer, Markly Morrison (LAKE), Jake Jones (Christmas), and Calvin Johnson.
Quite honestly her vocals are so beautiful, you almost feel theyre being wasted on a raw punk band like Christmas. But then again Christmasis a classic punk band without a lot of nonsense and its Beanblossoms vocals that make theyre music special.1. And The Moon

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the eighth theatrical film in the Apes franchise, released in 2014. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, it's the sequel to the 2011 film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, which began 20th Century Fox's reboot of the original Planet Of The Apes series.Upon theatrical release, the film was immediately met with critical acclaim, with critics praising its visual effects, story, direction, acting, and emotional depth.

Violent HeartsShimmering Stars is a three-piece dream pop act from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Their music embodies an attempt at drawing out and illuminating the subtle darkness inherent in the seemingly wholesome, innocent music of the 1950s and '60s. The result filters older influences like the Everly Brothers, Del Shannon, Phil Spector and Bo Diddley through a contemporary indie lens. Songs about being in love, not being in love, the painfully modern condition of floating in a state of suspended adolescence, all tinted with the slight self-deprication of knowing how trite it is to be writing songs about these things at all.
Shimmering Stars create reverb-soaked pop songs, full of arching harmonies, pulsing rhythms, and exquisite melodies, often with dark undertones, all while adhering to the timeless structural qualities of the seminal songs that inspired them. The songs are haunting and sublime, at times blissful, and at others heart breaking.
The band began as a recording project in the Spring of 2010. After stumbling upon some old live footage of the Everly Brothers, Rory McClure holed up in his parents garage in Kamloops, British Columbia to record the first demos. That first recording environment rendered Shimmering Stars distinctly dusty atmospheric sound and established a conscious insertion into the garage music continuum. The Beautiful & The Damned'The Beautiful and Damned' album and short film paints a very dire portrait of Gerald/G-Eazy that is very real and has never been shared by him before.
Originally Gerald saw limitations in his life so he created G-Eazy as a way to make it past those and live how he thought he wanted to live and become that rockstar he thought he wanted to be. The problematic pattern that has come from the rise of this star is that G-Eazy lives a constant dark clichÉ of addiction and over indulgence in his favorite vices that surround him each night in the lifestyle in which he's found himself. Heavy handed in reference to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the same name, 'The Beautiful and Damned' shows us hung-over Gerald left having to clean up reckless G's aftermath on a daily basis.
The dueling narrative he conveys is as desperate, humble, and confessional as it is brazen, celebratory, and loud in its own hubris. He is in the middle of a very serious conflict with his alter ego and he has genuine concern as well as thoughts about how to get back to who he is as person.
This album and film is about the duality of these two characters who wrestle inside of him, and the beginning of that communication and process on how to preserve his true self.
On the back of his monstrous first single, "No Limit" featuring A$AP Rocky and Cardi B from his forthcoming album The Beautiful & Damned, the Bay Area's own multi-platinum rapper and producer G-Eazy has announced the highly personal 20-track double-album will be out on vinyl via RCA Records.
Special guests on the album include a cast of heavy-hitters featuring Halsey, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, Kehlani, E-40, Charlie Puth, Anna of The North, and more.LP 1

Cosmic LogicLos Angeles, California-based duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis A.K.A.
Peaking Lights are thankfully back and set to release their new album Cosmic
Logic via Weird World Records / Domino Recording Co.
Cosmic Logic is a heady brew of dub, kraut, minimal house, disco and pop
influence all rendered in the inimitable Peaking Lights fashion. Recorded by
the band themselves in a couple of LA studios and then mixed by Matt Thornley of DFA, Cosmic Logic follows the outer space pop explorations of 2012's
critically acclaimed Lucifer and 936 before that. This time around, however,
the band have gone for a more concise, lean approach - abandoning some of
their psychedelic sprawl for a more pure pop experience.
Cosmic Logic opens with the guitar and drum-heavy "Infinite Trips," a song
which Coyes says is "an homage to the opening track 'Der Song von
Mandelay' on The Flying Lizards debut album - we wanted to come in from
left field." The mood of the record takes a sharp turn when the sputtering
drum machines and spacey keyboards kick in on "Telephone Call," a song that
tucks the cosmic into the quotidian. "It was influenced by ideas in the
Carpenters' version of the 1977 cover of Klaatu's 'Calling Occupants of
Interplanetary Craft,'" Coyes said. To which Dunis added: "It's about keeping
an open mind to cosmic messages that can come from anywhere."
The album traces a singular trajectory through Peaking Lights' current sonic
palette, full of coruscating synths and percolating drum machines. "I think
Aaron's rhythms are definitely influenced by whatever is on his mind:
reggae, dancehall, funk, Afrobeat, disco, etc." Dunis said of the beats that
power the album. Cosmic Logic both looks to other musical cultures as well
as up to the stars for inspiration, and is a beacon in dark times, a reminder to
be at once mindful of the terrestrial and the celestial, to be open-eared and

Little Death ShakerStripped of all noise influences and focusing on straight-up songs, Little Death Shaker is a record evocative of late nights and dusty parking lots, long drives and boozy hookups. This is the work of a dude who's spent his youth and young manhood on tour and it comes through in both the music and the lyrics. Where Castanets' lyrics gave us Ray Carver-ian fragments and it's-what-you-leave-out-that-counts minimalism, here we see Raposa back from the battleground with stories to tell.
This is the most lyric-heavy Raposa's been and it's also the most playful and humorous, and you get the feeling some of these songs would be the ones that would go down best near 2am at some weird sports bar dive in southeast Alabama/Iowa/Mississippi. (We can just see some big biker dude/fallen NASCAR star/Gary Busey lookalike sitting back-to-bar, Bud in hand, having a good-natured laugh over the punchline from Some of My Friends or the WTF premise of the Dan Reeder penned You'll Never Surf Again.)
The record begins with fighting spirit. Allegiance comes on with a punch of electric guitar and Raposa singing I woke up feeling/bold as shit. It's his rowdiest and most confident song to date, a real knockabout that'll take you by surprise if you're used to Castanets. Up next the title track verges on Queen (Flash Gordon soundtrack?) and Some of My Friends is a barnburner with the ghosts old Sun Studios players holding court.
Highlights are many. The dark-as-Skoal interstate roller Whippoorwill, the slowly ramping Some Kind of Fool, which rolls easy and pretty with backup vocals from Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent before building to a shitkicking rock 'n' roll peak where we find Raposa delivering some of his best and most racy lyrics, singing the very un-indie-rock, I could spend this good money wherever I care to/taste all the honies that I choose /lay myself down beside anyone's flower/all alive in the morning with the dew. It's a song about libertine freedom and heartbreak ignored and taking the bull by the horns and being, well, kind of a bastard.
More highlights: Castanets collaborator Talia Gordon taking main vocals on You're Not Standing Like You Used To (Kate Wolf); the after-afterhours minor chord jam Stateline, Little Death Shaker's most ruckus track of all, a late-night spent trapped in the stripclub/rig cab/country bar/tour van/your own damn head. At 10 minutes it's a tale of drugs and wayward love, a real red-lit kind of aloneness, backed by a legit live crawl, with high and ghostly organ and distorted vocals crackling like a bad CB connection.
With Meridian, Raposa and Houck bring back the vibe of Some Kind of Fool and take it on a humid trip through the deepest South, gators in the water, snakes in the sand, a stormhead looming over the sun-dappled river. When Raposa sings oh honey here comes the storm you can just FEEL the weather breaking.
One of this record's real charms is you can close your eyes and see these 13 tracks played live; you can see the drummer leaning over his kit with his brushes (and sunglasses on?), the backup singers standing around the mic, beers in hand, eyes closed, swaying side to side, the lights crisscrossing the stage. Meridian is no different. You can see this band. You can see these people playing together, and in a world of records that bands can't duplicate live, it's crazy-refreshing!
The album's closer, Allegiance 2, brings backlongtime Castanets collaborator Bridgit Jacobsen (nÉe Decook) for a hushed and barely-there apology. Oh lord be kind to me/after all these devils I have kissed. As a prayer, a shrug, and an exhausted offering, it's a fitting way to end an album so concerned with sin and vice. It's also a fitting end-introduction to this new band. So meet Raymond Byron and the White Freighters and their record Little Death Shaker. Here's to the new!1. Allegiance

Painted Garden (Discontinued)Greg Ashley, mastermind behind The Gris Gris and The Mirrors, is going solo for the first time since his 1993 masterpiece Medicine Fuck Dream. The result, Painted Garden, is Ashley's most ambitious, textured, beautiful and dark record to date. Warmer and more intimate than Gris Gris' 2005 garage-psych stunner For The Season, Painted Garden still reflects the same vision behind that band's greatness.
Written in the burnt-out ghettos of Oakland and in Ashley's remote East Texas cabin, the album's ten songs drip with the psychedelic flair that turned on cats such as Roky Erikson, Mayo Thompson and Skip Spence (and more recently Vetiver, Six Organs of Admittance, and Devendra Banhart).
Beautifully orchestrated, sometimes fragile and always fuzzy, the album features great tunes, proof that the young songwriter's star is still on the rise. Written, produced and performed almost entirely by the artist, Painted Garden is a true vision realized, and puts Ashley right up there with the great musical minds of the day.
