    Carrie & Lowell

Carrie & Lowell sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia. Stevens's gauzy double-tracked vocals wash across the dashboard of long-finned, drop-top Americana, yet as we race towards the coast we are reminded that sunshine leads to shadow, for this is a landscape of terminal roads, unsteady bridges, traumatic video stores, and unhappy beds that provide the scenery for tales of jackknifed cars, funerals, and forgiveness for the dead. Each track in this collection of eleven songs begins with a fragile melody that gathers steam until it becomes nothing less than a modern hymn. Sufjan recounts the indignities of our world, of technological distraction and sad sex, of an age without neither myths nor miracle-and this time around, his voice carries the burden of wisdom. Carrie & Lowell accomplishes the rare thing that any art should achieve, particularly in these noisy and fragmented days: By seeking to understand, Sufjan makes us feel less alone.

    Crooked Shadows

Produced by Chris Carrabba and Jonathan Clark with co-producer Colin Brittain, Crooked Shadow Is the result of a near decade-long period of immense self-examination for Carrabba. Crooked Shadows Explores Carrabba's reclamation of the simple yet extraordinary moments in life that long stood as the unsung heroes of his songwriting, as he reflects on experiences of his own and those closest to him. The result is a deeply cathartic body of work that traverses the complications and vulnerabilities of relationships while scrutinizing the possibility of self-improvement.

    I Do Perceive

Mike Kinsella continues as Owen on his third full-length, I Do Perceive, out on Polyvinyl. Kinsella constructs sensitive, emotional music, showcasing nice hooks and skillful guitar picking against electronic and acoustic drumbeats. Whispery vocals crack from exhaustion throughout I Do Perceive -- dramatic words weigh physically on Owen to the point where Kinsella can barely get anything out. The music is in the emo-indie rock camp with the likes of Pedro the Lion and Dashboard Confessional, songs of relationships and longing with melodramatics included. Kinsella is most successful when he changes up the structure and instrumentation within a song. "That Tattoo Isn't Funny Anymore" and "Bed Abuse" are standout tracks with interesting time changes and lush switches from solo acoustic guitar to full band atmospherics. I Do Perceive is more of the same from Owen -- a decent, melancholy release that stands up with others from his discography.

    Fairweather

Washington DC's Fairweather will release their third full-length album, and first album in over a decade, in 2014. The self-titled album will be released through the band's longtime label, Equal Vision Records.

Fairweather is the most straightforward thing we've ever recorded. Our goal was to make this sound like us playing our songs together, no fancy mixing or overdubs, and no overly complex song structures. On Lusitania, we embellished quite a bit - and this record was done with almost the opposite intent. It probably contains our fastest and most aggressive material to date as well. To me, it sounds the most like us of anything we've ever done. It's loud, urgent, and human, shares Green.

Lyrically and conceptually, I'd say the record is much about acceptance - about one's place in life, about how you exist and live, and coming to grips with certain aspects of your functioning as a person, for better or for worse. There's reflection in the record for sure, looking back on choices and habits, taking stock of what's behind you, and thinking of how it informs you of what's ahead.

Prior to disbanding in 2003, Fairweather released two full-length albums, If They Move Kill Them and Lusitania, and a four song EP, Alaska. Over the years, the band has toured with the likes of Thursday, Brand New, Recover, Dashboard Confessional, Piebald, Strike Anywhere, The Movielife and many more.

Fairweather is comprised of Jay Littleton (vocals), Ben Green (guitar, vocals), Peter Tsouras (guitar, vocals), Ben Murphy (bass) and Shane Johnson (drums).

    Poison Season

Poison Season opens with Vancouver native Dan Bejar swathed in Hunky Dory strings. He's a dashboard Bowie surveying four wracked characters-Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack-simultaneously Biblical and musical theatre. This bittersweet, Times Square-set fanfare is reprised twice more on the record-first as swaying, saxophone-stoked "street-rock" and then finally as a curtain-closing reverie. "The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet," explains their author. "I even sang with the band. That song always swung between super austere and super mid-'70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn't really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle." Mr. Bejar has long displayed a chameleonic instinct for change while maintaining a unified aesthetic (rather than just pinballing between reference points). No two records sound the same, but they're always uniquely Destroyer. His latest incarnation often appears to take sonic cues from a distinctly British (usually Scottish, to be precise) strain of sophisti-pop: you might hear traces of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice, or The Blow Monkeys. These songs merge a casual literary brilliance with intense melodic verve, nimble arrangements, and a certain blue-eyed soul sadness.

    The Diet

Diets? Who needs 'em? Well, if you're like Buddy Hackett, or us you do. A few years ago, I came across a 45-second monologue about trying to lose weight, performed by the comedian Buddy Hackett. It was on a 78 RPM record on the Coral Records imprint. It occurred to me that it could make an interesting dance recording given the right situation and circumstance. Equally inspirational was the book Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture 1970-1979 by Tim Lawrence. In reading it, I saw parallels between the dance culture of that era and the indie-rock/punk/experimental music culture. It unlocked in my mind a genre of music long dormant in memory yet an influence so prevailing in a variety of current musical genres. Woe be it unto the man whose tastes are frozen forever, for given time, space, and understanding, such things become reborn and reimagined as we search for a creative kernel of truth. I went about the realization of this idea with fellow Lambchops and electronic-minded musicians Ryan Norris (Coupler) and Scott Martin (Hobbledeions). Together we became HeCTA.

Using the idea of combining the notion of "song" and elements from stand-up comedy, and electronic music and a shared love of the electronic form and its many permutations, we respectfully, playfully explored and experimented. It was to be an equal sharing of ideas, influences, and missteps. We were looking for a new way of making songs incorporating these things, to make something concise on beat. The form is not such a surprise when you consider other electronic collaborations I've been involved with: Zero 7's remix of Lambchop's "Up With People" and co-writing X-Press2's "Give It." The results became The Diet, and those songs are with us now. As HeCTA, we take our approach seriously and are respectfully aware of the great electronic music created throughout its history continuing into the present-so much so that when it came time to mix these recordings, we reached out to some of the central figures of the genre. Such greats as Morgan Geist, John McEntire, and Q all had a hand in shaping the refined sound we present to you. With invaluable creativity and engineering by Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes in Nashville, we together created what we consider to be a collection of songs that move and move through you, from the dashboard to the dance floor, from Decatur to Dornburg, from Dorchester to Detroit. Suck it up, hippies. This music is our attempt to extend the boundaries of our expression and have some fun. It's not Americana, house, techno, trap, juke, or blaze. Why would it be? And like any good diet, it will be reviled then ultimately loved by all who give it a chance to work its way into their lives. We love you for trying, and we're trying to love you back. -kurtx

    Three EP's 2012 - 2014

Dinner is the alias for Danish singer and producer Anders Rhedin. Since 2012, Dinner has released two EPs (Girl and You Are Like LA) and a guided meditation tape. This Fall, in collaboration with Texas label Red Eye Transit, we will be releasing his latest effort Oui!, a four-track EP that serves as a powerful introduction to this idiosyncratic musician.

Dinner's songs seem to be inspired by his own life-in the lyrics you find references to cities, parties and girls (the
latter sometimes referred to as "the divine feminine"). Dinner himself claims that "All the songs are about death and transcendence."
At times, Dinner sounds a bit like a sun-bleached cassette tape you'd find stuck behind your car's dashboard-last played at a party in Dusseldorf in 1984-full of echoes of sweaty
depressions, spiritual longings, and early-morning trances." At times, Dinner sounds a bit like melodic EBM-meets-Europop with elements of Danish darkwave. And sometimes he sounds
more like the male descendant of Nico singing Eno-esque pop songs on discarded Julian
Cope tracks. Whomever you ask, you'll find Dinner's sound defies simple classification.
In his own words, his influences range from rock 'n' roll and pop giants like Michael Jackson and
Velvet Underground, to experimental tape-music pioneers like Steve Reich.

Dinner lives a somewhat nomadic existence, having alternated between LA, Berlin and
Copenhagen. This last year, Dinner's itinerary has included falling in love with a baroness in
Berlin, learning Qigong from a renowned Sifu on a mountainside in the Algarve, working on
commercial pop songs in Hollywood ("The essence of dark magic," according to Dinner), and
playing shows at festivals and galleries all over Europe. His current location is LA, where he is working on his debut full-length. Look out for that 2015.

    Twin Forks (Out Of Stock)

Twin Forks are Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) Suzie Zeldin (The Narrative), Ben Homola (Bad Books), and Jonathan Clark. The band new
band was formed to play a one off festival, but worked so well that they decided to keep playing together. They put together an EP that they gave away
digitally to fans, and released a proper EP in September 2013. They have been touring the world since the formation of the band, and are working
towards the release of their first full length record in 2014.

"I use my gut, and my gut don't lie to me" is more than just a lyric in Twin Forks' exuberant "Something We Just Know," it is a kind of mission statement for
the quartet. If you've ever been to a musical performance that made you lose all sense of time and place and give in to the cathartic feeling of clapping
and dancing and singing along, you've already visited the sweet spot where Twin Forks have made it their mission to reside. "Whatever makes the
audience stomp their feet and sing at the top of their lungs, that's what I want to be doing," says singer/guitarist Chris Carrabba. "I want to be generating
that spirit from the stage. And there's gotta be a way to do that whether the audience knows the songs yet or not." Carrabba, mandolin player Suzie
Zeldin, bassist Jonathan Clark and drummer Ben Homola are already well on their way, rousing crowds with their electrifying chemistry and anthemic folkrock.
