    Japan 3/11/11: A Benefit Album

In early March of 2011, Japan suffered one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, a tsunami which devastated its northern coast, and a nuclear disaster the scope of which is still not fully understood.

23 artists including of Montreal, St. Vincent, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, David Bazan, Joan of Arc, Owen, Casiokids, STRFKR, and many more spent the past several months entering the studio and going through their song archives to donate songs to this compilation in an effort to aid the victims of the tsunami and the negligence which led to the disaster that continues to affect Japan.

In addition, a handful of local bands from Champaign-Urbana (Polyvinyls hometown), Tulsa, and San Francisco agreed to be on the compilation and will be organizing benefit shows in their respective areas.

All profits from sales of this benefit album will be donated to the American Red Cross to support the International Red Cross in their ongoing relief efforts. Colored vinyl!

    Control (Pre-Order)

    Release Date: July 27, 2018*

    Remastered

Control (2002) is the third full-length album by Pedro the Lion and in his AV Club review, Josh Modell states, "musically, Control stands as David Bazan's strongest work yet. By necessity, the music can't obscure or obstruct the vocals, and Bazan does a fine job of balancing his resigned voice with alternately bleak and crashing, Bedhead- style rock. He matches Control's dispirited tone with music that sounds alternately resigned and angry, hopeless and charging. In a world of bands parlaying false angst into hit records, it's refreshing to hear one that's unafraid of real, adult emotions: Control may be dark and sometimes brutal, but it's ultimately life-affirming and difficult to forget. That's a worthwhile tradeoff."

After a shifting lineup, Pedro the Lion eventually became a one-man outfit. That man is David Bazan. A Seattle native, Bazan cut his teeth playing in hardcore bands before forming Pedro in 1995.

Under the moniker of Pedro the Lion, Bazan creates melodic pop in the vein of Bedhead, Hayden, and Sebadoh, with a lyrical focus on relationships. In early 2006, Bazan retired the Pedro moniker to continue on with solo work under his own name. In December of 2017, Bazan announced that Pedro The Lion would reunite to make a new album and tour the world in 2018.

It's Hard To Find A Friend

    Remastered

It's Hard to Find a Friend is the debut full-length album by Pedro the
Lion; a solid indie rock album with plenty of lyrical talent to spare.
After a shifting lineup, Pedro the Lion eventually became a one-man
outfit. That man is David Bazan. A Seattle native, Bazan cut his teeth
playing in hardcore bands before forming Pedro in 1995, taking the
band's name from a character he made up for a possible children's
book. It's Hard to Find a Friend was originally released in 1998.

Under the moniker of Pedro the Lion, Bazan creates melodic pop
in the vein of Bedhead, Hayden, and Sebadoh, with a lyrical focus
on relationships -- with both other people and God. In early 2006,
Bazan retired the Pedro moniker to continue on with solo work under
    his own name.

In December of 2017 Bazan announced that Pedro The Lion be reunited
to make a new album and tour the world in 2018.

The Only Reason I Feel Secure (Pre-Order)

    Release Date: July 13, 2018*

    Remastered

The Only Reason I Feel Secure is the second EP by Pedro the Lion.
Originally released as a 5 track EP in 1999 on Made In Mexico Records,
it was re-issued by Jade Tree records in 2001 with 3 bonus tracks
which originally constituted the bands' first single - and appear only
    on the Jade Tree reissue.

    Winners Never Quit (Pre-Order)

    Release Date: July 20, 2018*

    Remastered

"Winners Never Quit (2000) is an odd fable of a corrupt, self-righteous politician and his sweeter but equally wayward brother. The opening song, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, lends this whole affair more weight than it really deserves, and it is easily the best song on the album. Bazan works up a primitive blast of rock & roll on a couple of the songs, which gives Pedro more musical variety; otherwise, Bazan keeps it to the spare amateur vision he employed so well on It's Hard to Find a Friend; not always for the best. An interesting album, spooky in spots, but other than the terrific Slow and Steady, this one's a curiosity.

"Musically, the band has clearly found inspiration from the likes of Joy
Division, Disappears, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, with an emphasis
on heavy waves of drone and lots of visceral fuzz to create a slate-gray
soundscape that's as frightening as it is aggressive."

"Something tells me Stagnant Pools are going to end up much more
than Bloomington big." - Chicago Reader
"The band sounds ready to escape something here, as a bucking rhythm
and Strokes-like melody peeks through a hovering coal-dust cloud of
distorted guitar sustain and reverb" - Pitchfork

Following the release of their debut full-length Temporary Room,
Stagnant Pools embarked on several high profile tours supporting
the likes of David Bazan, Maximo Park, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and
    more.

All this time spent on the road gave the Indianapolis-based duo
a fresh perspective on their strengths and weaknesses as a band,
feedback that brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas took to heart
while spending last year working on new material.

As a result, Stagnant Pools' sophomore release Geist (which was
recorded and mixed directly to tape with Hum singer/guitarist
Matt Talbott) finds the pair refining and expanding on a shoegaze-meets-noise pop sound that has drawn comparisons to Joy
Division, Sonic Youth, and The Strokes.

    The Natural World (Awaiting Repress)

    Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl

Land Lines is an impossible decade, some gap in history where the tines of early electric pianos shimmer in echo chambers, baroque cellos thrum minor chords, and modern percussive rhythms build with surgical precision. All culminating in sparing, angular pop melodies that find new creative spaces in an otherwise overpopulated musical landscape. 'Land Lines' arose from the ashes of Matson Jones, when Martina Grbac, Anna Mascorella, and Ross Harada regrouped and began crafting new songs. After releasing their self-titled LP on Denver's Cash Cow Records, Anna left the group to attend graduate school; James Han, who had been recording and touring with Nathaniel Rateli and Gregory Alan Isakov, joined and helped shape the new sonic direction of the band. In early 2014, Land Lines recruited Xandy Whitesel to record/mix and TW Walsh (Suan Stevens, The Shins, David Bazan) to master a second LP, 'The Natural World.' With sultry songs that saunter, thrust, and linger, 'The Natural World' is a treasure trove of heart breaking songs of love, loss, and human nature and ushers in the next era of Land Lines's sonic exploration.

What A Time To Be Alive

After the shocking, and for many, demoralizing result of the 2016 election,
"I didn't buy the silver lining some were promoting that 'well, at least art and music will
be great now!'," says Superchunk co-founder and frontman Mac McCaughan.
"Obviously, any sane person would gladly trade four to eight years of terrible music for not
having our country dismantled to satisfy the whims of a vengeful child and his enablers."

That said, good music and art still have a lot to say, and the urgency of
current events gave Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon the momentum to make
something new sooner than later. "It would be strange to be in a band, at least our
band, and make a record that completely ignored the surrounding circumstances that we
live in and that our kids are going to grow up in." Enter What a Time to Be Alive,
recorded and mixed by Beau Sorenson. It's a record, says Mac, "about a pretty
dire and depressing situation but hopefully not a record that is dire and depressing to listen
    to."

Indeed, like so much of Superchunk's music in the band's nearly three
decades together, the songs on What a Time to Be Alive meet rage and anxiety
head-on with the catharsis and exhilaration of loud punk fire and vulnerable
pop energy. Like 2013's I Hate Music, which focused on death, loss, and the
role of music in an aging life, the new record brings spirit to the frontlines of
pain-it's as defiant as it is despairing, as much a call to arms as a throwing up
    of hands.

The record features more guest backing vocalists than any previous
Superchunk album, including Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit), Katie
Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), Skylar
Gudasz, and David Bazan. "Part of that was wanting a feeling of community," says
Mac. "I think that's important to not be completely bummed out about everything all the
    time."

Despite the album's driving force, it would be a mistake to call the album
political, which suggests it has anything to do with parties, policy, or anything
that can be broken down into a rational difference of opinion. "We're not trying
to offer policy solutions in the confines of a three-minute song," says Mac. "It's about 'how
do you live / not go crazy' in the current climate when it seems like every day there's a new
    outrage being perpetrated."
