    Toto IV (Speakers Corner)

Anyone who gives the dull name "Four" to their rock album must either be very sure of success or already have resigned. The group Toto may well have experienced such extremes as there was an enormous cleft between their amazing financial success and the crushing negative opinions voiced by the critics. Billboard criticised the superficial lyrics as being void of any sort of emotional weight while the Los Angeles Times aimed their fire at the musicians themselves, slamming them as dubious artists with a commercialised mentality.

To this Toto struck back with their fourth album, which was an unparalleled success and brought them six Grammy awards. For a whole ten months Africa reigned at Number 1 on the charts and together with the super-hit Rosanna the two smash hits were a constant presence, backed up by a collection of impressive rock classics. A trip to the record shop is all that is needed to prove that this is unlikely to change in the near future. The bright red cover with its depiction of a sword will catch your eye, as though saying: It's got to be the Fourth!

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Joy Of Nothing

Joy Of Nothing is Foy Vance's Glassnote Records' debut. Recorded in Donegal, Ireland and produced by Irish producer/musician/engineer Michael Keeney, Joy of Nothing includes 10 original songs written and performed by Foy Vance and includes very special guest appearances by Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.

Foy Vance hails from the seaside town of Bangor in Northern Ireland. As a child, Foy relocated with his father, a preacher, to the American Midwest settling in Oklahoma. With his father, Foy travelled the American South, widening his horizons and absorbing the rich musical traditions he was exposed to. Returning to Ireland some years later, Foy began writing his own music, deeply shaped by the sounds of his youth. After a recent session with Daytrotter, they described Foy's songs and lyrics: They will haunt you with light. They'll haunt you with pangs of love. They'll haunt you with the tears of others. They'll make you realize that you've never felt anything even as remotely deep as he has.

Foy Vance supported Ed Sheeran on his UK tour in late 2012, followed by a sold-out headline UK tour earlier this year. He has spent the past few months on Sheeran's sold out US tour, and has previously toured with the likes of Michael Kiwanuka and David Gray.

    A Treasury

A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake
produced three studio albums of sombre beauty: FIVE LEAVES LEFT (1969),
BRYTER LAYTER (1970), and PINK MOON (1972). It's impossible to
keep count of the contemporary artists who cite Drake as an inspiration,
but a cursory round-up includes R.E.M., Paul Weller, Travis, Portishead,
The Coral, Coldplay, David Gray, Super Furry Animals and Beth Orton.
Along with household names of his creative lifetime - the Stones,
The Beatles, Marley, Hendrix - his albums have become an unofficial set text
    for anyone passionate about music.

A Treasury is the definitive collection of 15 classic songs by Nick Drake.
With all the profile that he received earlier in the year for his 'rarities' release,
this is the perfect album for curious music lovers to pick up.

The Adventures Of Panama Red (Awaiting Repress)

    Purple Colored Vinyl

    1000 Only Limited Edition

f there was ever any doubt that the New Riders of the Purple Sage were the ultimate hippie country rock band-and having had Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead as early members meant that there wasn't much-The Adventures of Panama Red put them to rest. This 1973 album's loosely connected tall tales of drug culture, complete with the album's underground comic book graphics, ensured that this gatefold record was a long-time dorm room favorite for separating out those stems and seeds. But Panama Red (their only gold record) had a lot more going for it than just countercultural kicks-the band, by now consisting of John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Torbert, pedal steel ace Buddy Cage and Jefferson Airplane drummer Spencer Dryden-was much tighter than any outfit this stoned had a right to be, and with songwriting contributions from Peter Rowan (the hit "Panama Red" and "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy") and Robert Hunter ("Kick in the Head") as well as from the band's own fine tunesmiths in Dawson and Torbert, the songs were of a uniformly high quality. Production by multi-instrumentalist Norbert Putnam, charts by the Memphis Horns and vocal contributions by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Donna Godchaux helped enshrine this record as one of the finest country-rock outings of the '70s. Now, Real Gone Music is reissuing this classic album for the first time on vinyl, remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in NYC and lacquer cut by Kevin Gray, with a limited edition pressing of 1000 in-what else?-purple vinyl, with the original gatefold album and inner sleeve graphics (with lyrics) intact. Time to add to your stash of essential '70s vinyl!

    A New Tide (Awaiting Repress)

A New Tide marks a return to the always-freewheeling British band's more experimental roots, with songs like Win Park Slope and Airstream Driver evincing a spirit born of boundless imagination and a long-standing collaborative relationship. A wide range of styles is incorporated into A New Tide's matchless musicial brew. Flavors of Delta blues, psychedelia and Krautrock all come into play, resulting in a musically mischievous and remarkably forward-thinking collection. In short, A New Tide is Gomez at their inimitable, incomparable best.

A New Tide also sees Gomez accompanied by a number of illustrious guest musicians, including vocalist Amy Milan (Stars/Broken Social Scene), bassist Josh Abrams (The Roots, Sam Prekop, Godspeed You Black Emperor!), cellist Oliver Krauss (David Gray, Paul Weller, Beth Orton), and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie of Brooklyn's world-renowned Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.

200-Gram Vinyl Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio

This is perhaps the most exquisitely natural recording ever made. All in all, this Wilson record is a triumph of the analog recording art. - International Audio Review

David Abel, violin. Julie Steinberg, piano. Perhaps the most transcendent of David Wilson's brilliant recordings, this remarkable album of solo violin accompanied by piano comes as close to putting the two performers in the listening room as any ever made, writes The Absolute Sound, of Sonatas for Violin & Piano.

Recorded on Wilson's Ultramaster Recorder, built by John Curl, and using a spaced pair of Schoeps microphones driving vacuum tube electronics, the recording has a close perspective that heightens transparency and engagement as well as wonderfully capturing the beautiful tonality of Abel's Guarnerius violin and Steinberg's Hamburg Steinway without exaggerating their size.

The duo performs these works as if they are one. - The Absolute Sound, July/August 2013

Stereophile's Recording of the Month For February 1984

Imagine, if you can, a private recital in your own home by two consummate artists who play these works for their own delight as much as for yours. Imagine sound so completely and disarmingly natural that after 30 seconds you're unaware it's reproduced. That's what this record is all about. - Stereophile, February 1984

David Abel, violin, Julie Steinberg, piano. This composition occupies a special place among Beethoven's creations because it shows a unique quality: there is an Olympian elegance, a profound gentleness that pervades the entire work. Nowhere does Beethoven the earth shaker appear. Even the scherzo movement does not disturb this sustained thoughtfulness.

Violin and piano begin trading short thematic statements in quick exchange from the first notes of the first movement. Parallel arpeggios create a growing intensity. The middle section of the movement is characterized by abrupt modulations and an increased pace of exchanges. A striking procedure is the use of a seemingly interminable trill, nearly heartstopping in its intensity.

The second movement, Adagio expressivo, one of Beethoven's floating Adagios, is based on the compulsion of a slow intense bass movement. The serenity of this movement is not disturbed by elaborate decoration from both instruments. And this stillness is further emphasized by a fourteen measure repeating pedal point (nearly one fifth of the movement) which closes it. The Scherzo sustains the serious character of the entire work. The last movement begins not only with a quick alternation of themes between the violin and piano, but a soft and loud alternation, as well, which adds to the feeling of growing intensity. An interrupted rondo is the plan, but the interruptions are of a major kind: another sensuous adagio and a daring fugato lead to a presto outburst concluding the movement.

David Wilson had already recorded piano by the time he began working with world-class musicians Steinberg and Abel in the Mills College Concert Hall in Oakland, California, though it was the first time he recorded a violin. Experimenting with different microphone positions in an attempt to capture what he calls the delicious geometry of sound emanating from Abel's Guarneri and Steinberg's Hamburg Steinway D, he ended up hanging his Schoeps CMC-36 microphones from a ladder high above the instruments. Of the results, he says, I'd put the recording up against any chamber music recording. It has to be my favorite.

Reached at their home in Oakland, Steinberg and Abel, whose trio with percussionist William Winant has commissioned music from the likes of John Harbison, Lou Harrison, Paul Dresher, Somei Satoh, and Gordon Mumma (for starters), reminisced about their time with Wilson.

The session was free of the time pressure and tension that can really get in the way of the final outcome, says Abel. If we wanted to stop for a bite, or go outside to rest for a while, that was not a problem... Dave kept open to what was happening in the moment, as in a concert. He understood about not making a 'perfect' recording, and instead left the small imperfections... that make the final result sound human and real. One could not ask for better.

    Sibelius: Violin Concerto (Speakers Corner)

Not always do composers of instrumental works take the playability of their ideas into consideration. Jean Sibelius - himself an excellent violinist - must have been aware of the enormous challenges to the soloist, but he did not, however, envisage that the première of his violin concerto would be badly received due to the inadequacy of the violinist. That his op. 47 would become a showpiece of romantic violin repertoire is certainly not only due to the first-class soloists of our time, but also thanks to the work's broad and expressive melodies. In the short introduction of the second movement, the leaping intervals of the violin - as though from nowhere - develop into a broad symphonic dialogue with a late-romantic inflection, which is unleashed to create an emotional climax in the 20-bar main theme of the second movement. Seemingly purposely written for the nimble fingers of the world-class violinist, David Oistrakh and the evenly matched Philadelphia Orchestra present a superbly virtuosic and powerful rendering right up to the rousing finale. As an encore we hear The Swan Of Tuonela sing its tender, sublime song in a substantial solo on the cor anglais.

    Musicians:

    • David Oistrakh (violin)
    • Philiadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy

Recording: December 1959 and January 1960 at Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia (PA)

    Production: Howard Scott

    Deluxe Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

In 1987, the Madonna of Folk returned to U.S. record shops with a vengeance, delivering here interpretations of songs by Dire Straits, Johnny Clegg, U2 and Peter Gabriel - performers, writes AllMusic, whose political consciousness had been formed by listening to old Joan Baez albums.

We've taken a classic and kicked it up a notch. Several notches, in fact. This 200-gram stunner, pressed at Quality Record Pressings, was expertly remastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. Lacquer plating was by
QRP's master technician Gary Salstrom, topped off by a heavy cardboard gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing with vibrantly reproduced original artwork. How does it get any better?

The title track from Recently is a stunning Joan Baez original, where she boldly answers ex-husband David Harris' downbeat memoir of the '60s, Dreams Die Hard, as well as other '80s revisionists.

The track Asimbognagna was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

    Red Octopus

Mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI from the Original RCA/Grunt Records Tapes

When Jefferson Airplane morphed successfully into Jefferson Starship in the mid-'70s, their musicianship, and recorded output was enthusiastically received and was a very important career move in the continuing story of these Bay Area superstars.

Red Octopus surely helped award them fame even further as this amazing Jefferson Starship LP went to #1 and soon became one of the many platinum plus ventures for this much loved and respected band. Their new formula worked tremendously as this watershed release featured a plethora of chart topping hits like Miracles, Play On Love, Fast Buck Freddie and There Will Be Love.

The band was rich with rock and roll history, consisting of Airplane mainstays Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, plus later Airplane alumnus David Freiberg (Quicksilver), Papa John Creach, and Johnny Barbata (CSN+Y, Turtles), as well as new additions Craig Chaquico and Pete Sears. Jefferson Starship truly delivered the goods with Red Octopus as this album went on to quickly become a classic rock masterpiece!

Friday Music is no stranger to releasing some of the greatest music ever recorded by Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship and Hot Tuna, so it is with much honor they have announced the release of the masterwork Red Octopus on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl. Toto (Awaiting Repress)

Mastered by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and RTI with Kevin Gray!

While already having street credibility due to their years supporting a plethora of gold and platinum artists (Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Chicago), the debut album from Toto simply titled Toto catapulted the power quintet into major arena rock status as they accumulated a ton of hit singles and gold and platinum album awards on this 1979 masterpiece.

Upon its release, Toto flew into the upper rungs of the rock and pop music charts with the power rocker Hold The Line. Filled with its catchy hooks, brilliant vocal and guitar work from maestro Steve Lukather, and the familiar Bobby Kimball high energy lead vocals, this amazing debut single has become a classic rock staple.

Adding the stellar piano work from David Paich and Steve Porcaro, the song truly resonated with its huge audience, and broke wide open the importance of both the band and their great new album.

Produced by Toto (David Paich, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Bobby Kimball, David Hungate) Toto was a watershed venture for the band as its ten champion tunes have all truly stood the test of time. Aside from the massive top charting Hold The Line there were more classics abound like the follow up power rocker I'll Supply The Love, the soulful fare of Georgy Porgy featuring the great Cheryl Lynn on vocals, plus even more brillant album tracks like Angela, Rockmaker and Manuela Run.

The Friday Music Toto 180g audiophile vinyl series continues with the band's history making debut album Toto. Impeccably mastered from the original Columbia Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (Toto/Boz Scaggs/Hall & Oates/Doobie Brothers) this brilliant masterpiece is now finally available in the audiophile vinyl domain. For this special limited edition release, Friday is also including for the first time, the original album cover artwork in a gatefold format, which will truly enhance your hours of listening enjoyment.

200-Gram Vinyl LP Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Mastered From The Original Analog Master Tapes By Kevin Gray At CoHEARent Audio

    Stoughton Printing Old-Style Deluxe Film-lamination Tip-On Jacket

This is a gem of an audiophile record, a showcase for one of the truly great
20th century violinists - Nathan Milstein - whose skill and instrumental
mastery matches peers more widely and famously known: Perlman, Heifetz,
Haendel, Menuhin, Oistrakh, Szeryng and a handful of other soloists.
Clean copies of this album remain super desirable and regularly fetch in
    excess of $500 from collectors.

The range of music undertaken in this collection - from the classical
expression of Mozart to the salon civilities of Saint-Saëns - confirms
what was served notice by Milstein's American debut with the Philadelphia
Orchestra in 1929 - a young artist of special consequence had arrived
among us. Here, Milstein is backed by The Concert Arts Orchestra
conducted by Walter Susskind for this recording of violin and orchestra
    masterpieces.

Milstein was a Russian Empire-born virtuoso violinist and American immigrant.
It was a concert by the 11-year- old Jascha Heifetz that inspired his
parents to make a violinist out of Milstein. At age 7, he started violin studies
(as suggested by his parents, to keep him out of mischief) with the eminent
violin pedagogue Pyotr Stolyarsky, also the teacher of renowned violinist
David Oistrakh. When Milstein was 11, Leopold Auer invited him to study
at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Milstein made his American debut in
1929 with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He eventually
settled in New York and became an American citizen, but toured
    repeatedly throughout Europe.

Milstein was a technical perfectionist, obsessed with articulating each note
perfectly. He would spend long hours working out fingerings which would
make passages sound more articulated. He arranged many works for violin
and wrote his own cadenzas for many concertos. As a recording artist with
Capitol Records, his discs of recital repertoire bloomed with musical taste
    and stylistic versatility.

    Amigos (Speakers Corner)

Santana's music is like the game of Mikado - a tight bundle of pieces in various styles that is difficult to handle, even for experienced musicians. No whether the sticks are labelled funk, jazz, rock, R & B, or folk: when you try to pick out just one of these, the whole lot vibrates alongside.

It seems relatively simple (and is often attempted) to try and sort out track lists according to more or less commercially oriented compilations. And having fastidiously set up the ranking and astutely discussed it in your circle of friends, you can sit back and enjoy the brilliant guitar sound of such blockbusters as Caravanserai or Welcome - quality rules the day!

In his seventh album the guitar guru is once again surrounded by numerous freshly recruited supporting musicians and the star producer David Rubinson. The latter watches carefully over the development of this project, which is highly reminiscent of the early Santana sound. A perceptible infatuation with the vocals, or the wealth of buzzing, pulsating, clattering, clicking rhythms, or yet again the inimitable bubbling, frothy guitar solos: a Santana LP is simply unthinkable without all this. Why then should one try to pick out the various styles, genres or consumer groups when this record belongs to his best and most important six, seven - or maybe even eight? At the end of the day, we all remain amigos with Santana.

    Musicians:

    • Devadip Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals, percussion, conga)

    • Tom Coster (keyboards)

    • Ndugu Leon Chandler (drums, percussion, conga)

    • Armanda Peraza (conga, percussion, vocals)

    • David Brown (bass)

    • Greg Walker (vocals)

Recording: 1976 at Wally Heider Recording Studios, San Francisco, by Fred Catero and David Rubinson

Production: David Rubinson & Friends, Inc.

Bruch - Scottish Fantasy / Hindemith - Violin Concerto (Speakers Corner)

Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasia is a late-Romantic work which is seldom found on concert hall programmes today. One realises after listening to the piece for the first time that the composition proves to be at least as solid and artistic as all the other works of the composer.

The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jascha Horenstein gives a sonorous interpretation of the melancholic which, according to Bruch, depicted an aged minstrel who, while gazing upon the ruins of an ancient keep, ponders over the splendid days gone by. The well-known slender but warm timbre of David Oistrakh's violin is well suited to this music which was inspired by Scotland.
David Oistrakh demonstrates his versatility in this performance of Hindemith's Violin Concerto, written in 1939, where he effortlessly mesmerises the audience with breakneck cascades of scales. With many years of experience in the performance of modern music, the London Symphony Orchestra, led by the composer himself, prove that they are a match for this work.

This DECCA recording offers first class interpretations of two great masterpieces from differing eras that have been acclaimed widely and have reached far beyond the circle of Oistrakh fans.

    • Jascha Horenstein and Paul Hindemith (conductor)

"Musically, the band has clearly found inspiration from the likes of Joy
Division, Disappears, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, with an emphasis
on heavy waves of drone and lots of visceral fuzz to create a slate-gray
soundscape that's as frightening as it is aggressive."

"Something tells me Stagnant Pools are going to end up much more
than Bloomington big." - Chicago Reader
"The band sounds ready to escape something here, as a bucking rhythm
and Strokes-like melody peeks through a hovering coal-dust cloud of
distorted guitar sustain and reverb" - Pitchfork

Following the release of their debut full-length Temporary Room,
Stagnant Pools embarked on several high profile tours supporting
the likes of David Bazan, Maximo Park, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and
    more.

All this time spent on the road gave the Indianapolis-based duo
a fresh perspective on their strengths and weaknesses as a band,
feedback that brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas took to heart
while spending last year working on new material.

As a result, Stagnant Pools' sophomore release Geist (which was
recorded and mixed directly to tape with Hum singer/guitarist
Matt Talbott) finds the pair refining and expanding on a shoegaze-meets-noise pop sound that has drawn comparisons to Joy

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat King Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!
...if you haven't picked up every one of the Blue Note and Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem and company at Acoustic Sounds, you're really missing out! - David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52

The results on this five 45rpm 180g LP set are simply astonishing, particularly if you've heard the originals. The transparency, dynamics and three-dimensionality create the intense sensation of being in the studio with the musicians and especially with Cole who appears as a visceral, floating apparition between the speakers. The size and three-dimensionality of the vocal image produces the sensation of the listener being a 'fly on the microphone mike stand' listening to Cole perform, surrounded by musicians. The arrangements and performances are faithful to the originals but the sound of course is far superior. The feeling is of sitting in on history by being there, not merely eavesdropping after the fact. Music = 10/11; Sound = 11/11 - Michael Fremer, Musicangle

...mastered from the original three-track work tapes is a sonic spectacular that outdoes the original by a wide margin - as does its packaging. The SACD includes three-channel and two-channel mixes. A major reissue. Stereophile Records To Die For - Michael Fremer, Stereophile, February 2010

One of Nat King Cole's crowning achievements and a fittingly lavish celebration of a cultural and musical icon, The Nat King Cole Story offers a glorious overview of the career of one of the greatest and most beloved performers in popular music history. 38 tracks, many re-recorded in stereo for this anthology, offer a selection spanning his popular career.

His beginnings leading the popular jazz-oriented Nat King Cole Trio are represented with selections including Route 66 and I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons). Hits including Nature Boy, Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Orange Colored Sky, Night Lights and Looking Back are here to represent his unparalleled string of memorable hits as a popular vocalist. Calypso Blues and Ay Cosita Linda help illustrate the range his projects could cover. More contemporary to this anthology, selections including Wild Is Love are augmented here with two huge hits as a special bonus, Ramblin' Rose and Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer to further expand the scope.

A talent and voice for all times with a body of work that could and did help define their eras, Nat King Cole's career offers some of the finest, most enduring and treasured recordings ever made. Nat King Cole could never be fully served by any one set. But this wonderful cornucopia stands as a fantastic celebration for the enthusiast and a good starting point for someone just beginning to explore The Nat King Cole Story.

Using the original first generation 2-track and 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings in this 45-RPM 180-gram five album set.

Originally presented as a deluxe box set of 3 LPs in a canvas-bound embossed box with essays and pictures included in a album-sized booklet, The Nat King Cole Story was a prestigious release Capitol took obvious pride in. Complete with 5 LPs, canvas-bound embossed box and booklet with essays and pictures, Analogue Productions proudly recreates the experience for a new generation to cherish with this deluxe release. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

There are 38 songs in this collection. Of those, three are the same recordings included on other Analogue Productions Nat King Cole reissues. Stardust (track 28) is the same version included on Love Is The Thing. St. Louis Blues (track 30) is the same version included on the album of that title. And Paradise (track 33) is the same version included on The Very Thought Of You. Three more songs - Sweet Lorraine, It's Only A Paper Moon and (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 - are songs that appear on After Midnight, however these versions are stereo re-recordings of the original arrangements from the 1940s.

Vocalist Stacey Kent may or may not be »the greatest ballad singer in half a century«, as her PR claims, but her straightforward renditions of these by-request ballads are not at all generic. What makes them consistently delightful is her unique sound and delivery. There's a certain brassiness, a trumpet-like pointedness, in her voice, as well as a host of endearing idiosyncrasies. Kent knows how to make every tune fit her own musical persona. Dreamsville includes a number of seldom-heard gems, particularly You Are There by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, You're Looking at Me by Bobby Troup, and the ever-stunning title track by Henry Mancini. She also presents perennial favorites like Polka Dots and Moonbeams and Thanks for the Memory (the latter not exactly a ballad). And although this is Kent's hour all the way, her band provides expert backing and more than a few surprises. The singer's husband, Jim Tomlinson, takes a break from tenor sax to play a sumptuous clarinet solo on Polka Dots. And in the midst of Rodgers & Hart's Little Girl Blue, pianist David Newton, bassist Simon Thorpe, and drummer Jasper Kviberg fall away, entering again only after Tomlinson and Colin Oxley perform a hushed tenor/guitar duet chorus.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Happy Trails (Pure Pleasure)

Ranked 189/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Without question, this follow-up to Quicksilver Messenger Service's self-titled debut release is the most accurate in portraying the band on vinyl in the same light as the group's critically and enthusiastically acclaimed live performances. The album is essentially centered around the extended reworkings of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love? and Mona, as well as the lesser lauded - yet no less intense - contribution of Gary Duncan's (guitar/vocals) Calvary. This album is the last to feature the original quartet incarnation of QMS. The collective efforts of John Cipollina (guitar/vocals), Greg Elmore (percussion), David Freiberg (bass/vocals), and the aforementioned Duncan retain the uncanny ability to perform with a psychedelic looseness of spirit, without becoming boring or in the least bit pretentious. The side-long epic Who Do You Love? suite is split into an ensemble introduction and coda as well as four distinct sections for the respective bandmembers.

    Musicians:

    • John Cipollina (guitar)

    • Gary Duncan (guitar, vocals)

    • David Freiberg (bass, vocals)

    • Greg Elmore (drums, percussion)
