The Days We HadIn 2014, Jackson Philips skipped the city of Angels and trekked north to the Bay Area after leaving Berklee School of Music. This is where he would create the Day Wave project. He has since received praise from The Los Angeles Times, Noisey, Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, The FADER, and many more in addition to early support from KCRW, Beats 1, Sirius Alt Nation, and XMU. His breakthrough single 'Gone' racked up over 6 million Spotify streams with 'Drag' following closely at over 5 million. With self-released singles and EPs under his belt, The Days We Had is his highly anticipated full-length major label debut.1. Something Here

Wave turned out to be the last album the Patti Smith Group would record, as it was also last album Smith would record before a nine year hiatus.
The Godmother Of Punk decided to focus on her family life and moved to Michigan, but not before leaving us with gems like the sexually mysterious 'Dancing Barefoot' (dedicated to her husband to be Fred 'Sonic' Smith) and her amazing, biting version of 'So You Want To Be (A Rock 'n' Roll Star)'. Produced by Todd Rundgren, this is her most pop-oriented album, and many at the time could not appreciate her more accessible sound. Nevertheless, 'Wave,' her spoken word tribute to Pope John Paul I (who reigned for only 33 days) is as touching and harrowing now as when it came out in 1979.1. Frederick

Brace The Wave"I recorded 'brace the wave' in about 6 days with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab studios in Easthampton Massachusetts ( I have recently moved back to the area after 17 years in LA ). Justin was the engineer for the 3 Dinosaur Jr 'reunion' LP's , "beyond", "farm" and "I bet on sky" . My ease with Justin meant I approached the sessions with a focus and confidence I don't usually feel. Songs like "redeemed" , "wave' and "moving' reprise my early methods of tuning my ukelele down low and writing the song in the moment , during the recording process. Others like "lazy" and "c+e" are live recordings of traditional-style folk songs , some which I began writing nearly 20 years ago. The lyrics encapsulate yet another transitional period in my life . I still don't feel I have a choice but to puzzle over difficult times in my songs. I kept this album short anticipating the listener fatigue associated with a musician who's been around for 25+ years. As a music obsessive myself, I understand. I like new things too. But here it is, 'Lou's Anxiety Song' versions 740 through 749: 'brace the wave' . Thanks for listening." - Lou Barlow1. Redeemed

Reissue of the 2007 major label debut of one of the most controversial modern day rock acts. Features the singles ''Stop'' and ''Thrash Unreal''.
For Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel (now Laura Jane Grace), sometimes you have to get the hell out just to find your way back in. Since 1997 we have seen Gabel rise from acoustic folk-punk gunslinger in the dives of Gainesville, Florida to releasing Against Me!'s searing, blood-smeared slices of scrappy punk. The 2007 release, New Wave, was their major label debut, one that Spin magazine anointed as their Album Of The Year. And while Gainesville was home, Gabel felt the walls closing in when touring for New Wave came to an end. So he split. With his then-wife, he left behind the ''didja-hear-about-so-and-so'' insular Gainesville world for the sleepy beach town of St. Augustine, wandering the streets and driving dusty back roads: searching, pining, hoping for inspiration.

Wave Of Mutilation: Best Of The PixiesOne of the most revered college-radio bands of the late 1980s and early '90s, the Pixies combined smart yet surreal pop with jagged, punk-influenced rock and, oddly enough, broke up just as the alternative music scene went mainstream. Fueled by Black Francis's oft-maniacal vocals and bizarrely catchy songs, the Boston-based quartet, rounded out by bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering, consistently crafted fascinating albums during their brief but headstrong run. This 23-track collection, released in tandem with their highly anticipated 2004 reunion tour, captures many of their finest moments.
Proceeding semi-chronologically, Wave Of Mutilation begins with the rambunctious ditty Bone Machine. Other early gems include the strange anthem Holiday Song, the anthropomorphic ode Caribou and Deal's signature song, Gigantic. The band's beloved 1989 album, Doolittle, is amply represented by seven songs, including the pleading Hey, the mischievous Monkey Gone to Heaven, the fierce Debaser and the pop-perfect Here Comes Your Man. Latter-day tunes include rockers such as Dig for Fire, Alec Eiffel and Planet of Sound, along with two B-sides, Into the White and an excellent cover of Neil Young's Winterlong. Chart-Topping 1974 Record Reunites Dylan With the Band: Interplay Alone Worth Experiencing Set in Highest-Possible Fidelity
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity Version Brings Underrated Gem to Fullest Light With Warm, Revealing Sound
Edgy Personal Album Captures Legendary Artist Straddling Line Between Romance and Suspicion: Includes Beloved Favorites "Forever Young" and "You Angel You"
Bob Dylan's Planet Waves became an event even before the album was released and revealed itself as an understated masterwork. His first studio recording in nearly four years, the homespun 1974 effort finds him reuniting with the Band, by then firmly established as virtuosos. The chemistry is obvious on every song. And the modest and spare production only magnifies the honesty and purity of the collaboration. Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP deepens the music's emotional connection and rustic warmth to the fullest possible extent.
Mastered from the original master tapes, this collectable audiophile edition brings to the surface the communal interplay and warm, relaxed vibe established by Dylan and the Band. Listeners will finally sense the sensitive tones made possible by the ensemble's laidback nature and watertight playing. The deep body of Richard Manuel's piano, pinpoint decay of Garth Hudson's organ, and clarity of Dylan's vocals emerge with new perspective. As a result, Planet Waves leaps from the background of Dylan's catalog into the fore, the revelatory sonics helping earn the record serious consideration as one of the Bard's finest.
Recorded in just three days time, Planet Waves is at its core an exhibition of the inimitable folk-rock honed by Dylan and the Band. Recalling the Americana spirit of The Basement Tapes while adding a domesticated edginess and subtracting a degree of wildness, the set personifies simple charm and scraggly sweetness. Couched in the context of Dylan grappling with the chasm between family life and the road, Planet Waves fittingly encompasses myriad moods and contradictions, with tunes ranging from unquestionably devotional to overtly dark. In between, the singer attempts to navigate peace, catharsis, and resolve.
Per Dylan's hallmark, many tunes on Planet Waves involve twists and subterfuge. Not, however, the best-known offerings-the often-covered wish "Forever Young," celebratory roll-and-tumble "On a Night Like This," devotional "You Angel You," which spark with love, romance, and prayer-like tenderness. Yet the seeds that blossomed into 1975's traumatic break-up album Blood on the Tracks are also planted here. Complex feelings and deep-seated personal confusion surface on "Wedding Song," the hardscrabble "Tough Mama," piano-centered "Dirge," and knocking-on-heaven's-door darkness of "Going, Going, Gone."
Throughout, Dylan's voice supplies subtle hints about his mindset and intent as the Band shadows him step for step, adding to the thematic ambivalence and contributing to a debate over meaning that continues today. Indeed, such relevance confirms the significance of Planet Waves 40 years after its original release. Mobile Fidelity's analog version digs beneath the surface and helps expose the record's buried strains.

Gray Waves (Discontinued)Hailing from Athens, GA, Twin Tigers are ready to unleash their dynamic sound unto the world. Along with other elements of the past five decades of rock music, Twin Tigers blend noise textures with pop structure and shoegaze overtones shaping a sound that's all new.
Formed by co-workers at the Grit restaurant, guitarist/vocalist Matthew Rain and bassist Aimee Morris began Twin Tigers as their previous bands dissolved. In February of 2008, the Curious Faces/Violet Future EP was released to critical acclaim. The band quickly started building a solid fan base throughout the southeast and played shows with Deerhunter, Dead Confederate, Black Lips, Dungen, Woods, Snowden and A Place to Bury Strangers.
After a slew of revolving guitarists and drummers the band debuted its current lineup with drummer Doug Crump and guitarist Forrest Hall, opening for Les Savy Fav at the Earl in Atlanta only a few weeks before their first trip to SXSW 2009. Descended Like VulturesRogue Wave's 2005 album Descended Like Vultures is now back in print on vinyl! Historians, rock critics and sports announcers have all spent plenty of time waxing poetic about the sophomore slump, but don't waste any time pulling out that reference for Descended Like Vultures, Rogue Wave's second album for Sub Pop. While the album defies expectations as much as it defies the odds, singer/guitarist Zach Rogue knows the score: "That's the whole thing with the title," he admits. "It' like waiting for the other shoe to drop this perception that everyone around you is going to turn their back."
A related adage is that you have your whole life to write your first album and a year to write your second, but Rogue had anything but writer's block after completing Out Of The Shadow and seeing it re-released by Sub Pop in 2004 (the original, limited pressing was released on the band's own label in early 2003). In fact, the group entered the studio at the end of March with more than enough material for a full-length (three albums worth, to be exact).
"I've wanted to record records for years and years, so really, it's like someone opened the door for me to get started," explains Rogue. "I feel like Descended Like Vultures is actually the beginning this is really where we start." Though Rogue assembled the Oakland, CA, quartet which includes fellow multi-instrumentalists Pat Spurgeon (focus: drums), Gram LeBron (guitar) and newest member Evan Farrell (bass) in late 2002, Descended Like Vultures is the first time the band's leader has ever made a record with a whole group in the studio. The band spent 10 days with Bill Racine (who also produced Out Of The Shadow with Rogue) at Supernatural Sound in Oregon City, OR, resulting in the creation of 11 tracks that journey through a dreamy landscape inspired by several decades of classic rock and pop (from Fleetwood Mac to Neil Young to My Bloody Valentine.)
The Mark Kozelek-esque "California" and the XTC-flavored "Catform," which sports Rogue's most dazzling vocal performance to date both feature cold yet inspired examinations of human nature informed by Rogue's experiences on the road. For the first time as an entire unit, Rogue Wave went out of its way to create a free-flowing album that includes equal amounts of tension, release and resolution. In the process they have made a brilliantly layered, expertly crafted album that changes shape with repeated spins.1. Bird On a Wire

Different CreaturesTwo years on from their youthfully nervy debut, Liverpool's Circa Waves are showing signs of an assured maturity on their sophomore album, 2017's confidently delivered Different Creatures. On 2015's aptly titled Young Chasers, Circa Waves lead singer/songwriter Kieran Shudall cooed and sneered his way through a wave of kinetic post-punk that seemed born as much out of teen angst and a boyish enthusiasm as his obvious love of influences like Arctic Monkeys and the Strokes.
While still clearly carrying a torch for early-2000s neo-post-punk, Shudall and his Circa Waves bandmates are now road-hardened tour vets, indie rock prodigal sons returned home to reconnect with old mates over a pint, figure out how their relationships went so awry, and contextualize the insanity of the past few years. It's a vibe perhaps best expressed on the yearning Without You, in which Shudall sings, Finally getting some, thank god for home/So, shit food and sleeping pills/Cheap drinks and cheaper thrills/Oh pour me, pour me/And I and I, I will lead this parade/And I will travel for days to get to you. It's a catchy song, as are many on Different Creatures, reminiscent of their previous efforts but with an added layer of muscular guitar fuzz that brings to mind the bombastic '90s sludge of the Pixies crossed with the passionate alt-rock swoon of The Bends-era Radiohead.
It's probably no coincidence that, prior to working with bands like the Killers and Interpol, Different Creatures producer Alan Moulder made his name working on albums by such alt-rock icons as Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nine Inch Nails. With Moulder at the helm, Circa Waves deliver a varied set of driving anthems that do recapture much of the convergent energy of the '90s Brit-pop and alt-rock scenes. Without overwhelming you with a sense of dÉjà vu, cuts like Out on My Own, Stuck, and Goodbye are massively hooky blasts of guitar rock that subtly draw cues from both older acts like Smashing Pumpkins and similarly inclined contemporary bands like the Killers and Kings of Leon. Elsewhere, Shudall showcases his stylistic range on the John Lennon-esque acoustic ballad Love's Run Out, and leavens the Killers/Kings of Leon influence with some Lindsey Buckingham-ish, Fleetwood Mac-level pop grandeur on the uber-catchy standout Fire That Burns.
Part of what makes Circa Waves so compelling is that they are able to match the sound of their influences while still believably making the results sound their own. They've grown into an assured rock entity, but they've retained their fundamental sense of working-class Liverpudlian blues. As Shudall sings on Old Friends, I can't believe I'm still up/I can't believe this conversation is still going/I need to really grow up/I drank so much I can't see straight son/What am I doing? Ultimately, with Different Creatures, Circa Waves sound like they know exactly what they are doing.

Live From Austin, TX (David Byrne)David Byrne is a modern renaissance man - and that's not just a clichÉ. From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He's been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful...and he shows no signs of slowing down decades later. This show, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, "Like Humans Do" and the release of the album Look Into The Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, "Desconocido Soy." Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin's own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut. Of course, besides the brilliant songwriter and performer that he is, he's also an accomplished performance artist, photographer, web journalist, film writer/director, composer of motion picture soundtracks, and founder of his own world music label, Luaka Bop Records. He also has a collection of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes on his mantel. His music may be complex and poetic, but he makes no bones about his ultimate intent: "I want to move people to dance and cry at the same time.

BoyRanked 417/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
There's little in U2's 1980 debut to suggest that this was a band bent on world domination. Indeed, there's a charming, if naive, coming-of-age urgency in songs such as 'I Will Follow,' 'Stories for Boys' and 'Out of Control' that may startle listeners more familiar with U2's latter-day bombast and stadium-scale theatrics. Bono's viewpoint, still tantalizingly vague and wide-eyed, showed that his penchant for strident polemics hadn't yet gotten the best of him; his anthems are those of a yearning Dubliner barely out of his teens rather than those of a world-weary multimillionaire. The band's sometimes-ragged musical chops work in its favor here, gently burnished to then-fresh new-wave sheen by producer Steve Lillywhite. If the Edge's dense, effects-laden guitar work seems overly familiar, it's only because this album was such a key influence on the whole 'rock of the '80s' sound. Though not quite as moody or musically accomplished as October, arguably the band's first masterpiece, Boy still ranks as one of U2's best albums.1. I Will Follow

Sun Coming DownOught returns with their second full-length album Sun Coming Down, following a break-out year for the MontrÉal quartet that saw its 2014 debut More Than Any Other Day make well-deserved waves, with a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork and appearances on countless year-end lists. Having spent most of 2014 on the road vitalizing audiences with no-nonsense post-punk and the feverishly observational testifying of singer/guitarist Tim Darcy, Ought spent the first few months of 2015 writing, playing the occasional local gig, and eventually heading back to the studio to lay down a batch of fresh tunes. Sun Coming Down maintains the band's tight, twitchy, economical sound. Ought pursues an artistically apposite austerity in committing these new songs to tape, referencing the arid and unvarnished production of no-wave and early indie rock while balancing carved-out angularity against an evolving comfort with textural coalescences and measured pacing. It makes for an album that's consistently, insistently propulsive but also feels unhurried and pleasantly unhyped. Sun Coming Down confirms the distinctive vitality and purposive naturalism of Ought, which resists facile primitivism and overhyped dynamics in equal measure, keeping things hermetic but never airless, ascetic but never dispassionate, literate but never prolix.1. ValtariYou can forgive Sigur Rós for being hazy on the details of the recording of their sixth album Valtari. It's either the album they always wanted to make, or the album they almost didn't make, depending on how you look at it.
In 2011, the band started the painstaking forensic task of piecing together a cohesive and magical work from disparate constituent parts. If this sounds unromantic, the results are anything but. Something alchemical occurs when the four members of Sigur Rós are in the room together, and even if Valtari is more a "studio based" album than any of its predecessors (which usually start life as rehearsal room jams), the long hours of experimentation and unsentimental editing have yielded incredibly persuasive results.
In English Valtari translates as "steamroller" and there is something right about the title in terms of the process of its creation. The last three tracks of Valtari are like one long slow gorgeous fade out, as the listener, having been softened up by the slightly more "songy" start to the album, is left with the subtly shifting, deep introspective beauty of the last 24 minutes.
After that, penultimate track, Valtari is like the far heart of the album; eight minutes that feel like being alone in row boat on a chill day, small irregular waves lapping the wooden hull as a dense fog bank rolls in and ice slowly encases every surface. Below the fathomless green, deep endures. Gatefold 2LP with MP3 coupon.1. Ég anda
