Demon PreacherMerging at the tail end of the NWOBHM scene, Brighton-based band Deathwish, along with bands like Onslaught and Xentrix, was part of the UK's answer to the emerging Bay Area thrash scene in the US. With their high-speed riffing, heavy rhythms, hardcore influences and sinister lyrical themes, Deathwish was a band that stood out from the pack but never really saw the success they truly deserved. 1988's Demon Preacher was the band's second (and final) album, and it still holds up as a classic of UK thrash metal.1. Coliseum Deluxe ReissueFounded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio Coliseum have grown to become one of today's quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision.
Over the last decade Coliseum have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan's own label), and even Deathwish ("True Quiet / Last Wave" 2009).
And now, 2014 brings Coliseum and Deathwish together again as their permanent label home. "We have a long and storied history with Deathwish and their family of bands," says Patterson. "Not only did we work with the label on the 'True Quiet' 7", we've toured around the world with Deathwish bands, released a split with Doomriders early on, and I've been fortunate enough to design a number of Deathwish releases. While Coliseum officially joining the label's roster is a new chapter for us, it feels like a homecoming."
To celebrate Coliseum's 10th anniversary, we are proud to present the "Coliseum" Deluxe Reissue: A twenty song collection featuring their classic self titled debut album (out of print since 2006) paired with eight essential bonus tracks from their primordial years. Full Cold MoonCold Cave is the creative rebirth of acclaimed musician and writer Wesley Eisold. Cutting his teeth in underground bands American Nightmare (Give Up The Ghost) and Some Girls, Eisold's body of work has truly effected a generation of listeners. Through constant cross-pollination Eisold has gained mass appeal, influencing underground and popular culture with his ever evolving artistic vision.
With an already prolific number of releases, Cold Cave has become a name synonymous with the contemporary resurgence of Darkwave and Synth Pop sub-genres. Propelling Cold Cave to perform at world class museums The Getty and the Guggenheim, as well as performances with legends Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nine Inch Nails, among others.
Deathwish are proud to announce "Full Cold Moon" from Cold Cave, now for the first time on 12"LP vinyl format (a CD collection was released on Eisold's Heartworm imprint in 2014).
"Full Cold Moon" is a compilation of EP recordings originally individually released in 2013, now presented as one collection; "A Little Death to Laugh", "Oceans With No End", "God Made the World", "Black Boots", and "Nausea, the Earth and Me". Notably this is also the first vinyl appearance of the song "Dandelion" as well as the entire "Nausea, the Earth and Me" EP (previously only available on limited CD and Digital formats). BlindedHarm's Way are an absolute force of a band from Chicago, Illinois. They made a name for themselves with masterful releases on the Organized Crime and Closed Casket Activities labels. With their punishing Isolation album (Closed Casket, 2011), Harm's Way brutally melded a metal attack, hardcore aggression, and industrial repetition into a new kind of sound. Creating a balance of intensity and originality rare in today's world of music.
The evolution of Harm's Way continues with Blinded, their new album on Deathwish. Illustrated by Florian Bertmer (Converge, Pig Destroyer, etc) and recorded at Brick Top Recordings by engineer Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos), Blinded is a crusher from start to finish. Songs like Frontal Lobe and Live to Loathe are the band at their heaviest and most adventurous so far. All of it fueled by a vitriol and pain that makes them stronger than all.1. Frontal Lobe

Abhorrent EndingsNew Lows are one of Boston's heaviest bands, taking inspiration from legends like Ringworm, (early) Bolt Thrower, and others. Their previous release Harvest of the Carcass (Deathwish 2011) was highly praised by kids and critics worldwide as one of the heaviest releases of that year. A release that led to New Lows infamously touring the United States with Nails, Ringworm, and label mates Bitter End.
Abhorrent Endings is the latest offering from New Lows. A crude five song crusher that shows the band digging into the rubble in search of something darker and heavier than ever before. Anxiety's KissFounded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio Coliseum have grown to become one of today's quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision.
Over the last decade Coliseum have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan's own label), and Deathwish.
"Anxiety's Kiss" is the new album from Coliseum, recorded at The Magpie Cage by producer/engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). "Anxiety's Kiss" is a hook-laden maturation of the Coliseum sound. Nods to their early D-Beat leanings are there, but it is their willingness to embrace Post-Punk melody and explore the space between notes that make "Anxiety's Kiss" so alluring. Confidently growing within the punk world, without ever leaving it behind.
"We Are The Water" kicks things off with a synth-driven stomp while lyrically serving as a poignant social awakening and call for human empathy. Amidst a tangle and twang of melody, "Course Correction" and "Wrong/Goodbye" then emerge to tackle the ripe subjects of class division and police brutality. "Drums & Amplifiers" picks up pace, taking on those who reflect on their punk past rather than absorb the spirit that still charges the air around us. It's not all social and subcultural commentary though. The dizzying "Dark Light Of Seduction" and sultry "Sharp Fangs, Pale Flesh" (where J. Robbins guests performing the BulBul Tarang) are darkly provocative narratives about the power of lust and love. In soul and tone, they both interject an emotional underbelly to it all. Robbins also adds bass on "Comedown", an industrial-tinged romp led by Vaziri's baritone guitar and Wilson's booming toms. Coincidentally, it is also the first Coliseum song ever recorded to not feature Patterson on guitar. "Sunlight in a Snowstorm" is the band at their most melodic, with a snow-covered New York City as its lyrical backdrop. The high beam lit, cinematic noir of "Driver at Dusk" and infectious, fuzzed-out "Escape Yr Skull" lastly descend to close out the album. A flawless, yin and yang pairing that is Coliseum at the peak of their experimental and anthemic powers.1. We Are The Water

ADAD-DEA-0955xRise and Fall
FaithFaith is Rise And Fall's artistic exploration on the concepts of faith and fate, nature and nurture, and life and death. Struggles that we can all relate to in our daily lives. Sonically, the album melds an impassioned technical proficiency and emotional performance unlike any other previous Rise And Fall release. Showing that in their maturity, Rise And Fall have gained creative depth without losing the ferocity that earned them their rightful place on the throne of the Belgian hardcore community.
Faith was engineered and recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at God City studios. It includes guest appearances by Kurt himself, Stephen Brodsky (Cave In), Justin De Tore (Mind Eraser, etc.), Kevin Baker (The Hope Conspiracy, APMD, etc).
With the first murky chords of opener A Hammer And Nails, Rise And Fall shake the ground with noise rock discordance, weighty hardcore heaviness, and trademark punk metal rage. As the song recedes, they rise up again and unleash Deceiver and The Gallows Await, two truly vicious anthems. While it's welcoming to hear Rise And Fall hit this familiar (yet evolved) stride, it is in their new found dynamics where they really shine. For example, Breathe carries an infectious/hazy jangle that pays homage to the Am Rep world before exploring unorthodox directions. And songs like Burning At Both Ends and Things Are Different Now take unpredictable melodious twists and turns before collapsing into powerful dirges. Not only have Rise And Fall grown musically but lyrically as well. In fact all throughout Faith, soul searching lyrics are more revealing than ever before. Exploring the concept of broken faith, separation from the natural world, and the search for direction in life. This theme and its aural counterpart coalesce in the nearly seven minute epic closer Faith/Fate. A song that metamorphosizes through a hypnotic ebb and flow, only to strip away layers to reveal something primal at the core; audio of the actual heartbeat of Vince's newborn daughter. This is truly a rare and powerful moment to hear in aggressive music; one where real life and art fuse together as one.1. A Hammer and Nails

PaintedWhile every bit as sonically vitriolic as their past endeavors, Painted attempts to focus its energy rather than lash out blindly. Songs like "Greenland" and "It's The Water" still weigh in with bottom-heavy instrumentation, but lyrically look towards brighter horizons. Though the band seeks to close the emotional divide it basked in on their debut, the primary meaning behind New Distances couldn't be more pertinent to the band's sophomore album. The U.S. Department of Immigration recently denied entry to Cox, forcing the recruitment of temporary guitarist Mark Holcomb (Aeges, Undertow, Shift) for Narrow's 2011 tour with Helms Alee. While the global nature of the band already limited their opportunities for touring, this additional roadblock further exacerbated the difficulties of writing and recording an album with members spread across the United Stated and Europe.
Despite the difficulties of recording across two hemispheres, Painted sounds like a band locked into a singular vision. Matt Bayles (Mastodon, ISIS, Minus The Bear) recorded the album at Red Room Studios with Cox's guitar overdubs tracked by Wayne Pennell at Bunker Studios in Brentford, England during late night Skype sessions with the stateside members of the band. Due in part to the constraints of time and distance, Painted is a streamlined record. With eight songs clocking in at just over 27 minutes, the album wastes no time exorcising its demons. And while part of New Distances' allure stemmed from it's marriage of primal metallic hardcore with the effects-laden art rock approach of guitarists Cox and Frederiksen, Painted harnesses power from curtailing more of their experimental moments in favor of big meaty riffs and voracious tempos.1. All We Love We Leave BehindAll We Love We Leave Behind is the latest album from Converge. Once again recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at his renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, All We Love We Leave Behind is a no-frills Converge album that sees the band-which also features vocalist Jacob Bannon, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller-eschewing fancy production techniques in order to create seventeen songs that work as a cohesive whole yet can also stand on their own. There's no artificial distortion, triggers, or Auto-Tune on this album, Ballou explains, it's all organic, it's real sounds that capture the way the band performs live.
From the classic rock-inflected, guitar tapping madness of Sadness Comes Home to the technical acrobatics of Aimless Arrow and relentless assault of Shame In The Way, this is an extremely varied album that has enough sonic shifts to captivate each listener's attention. It's always been important for us to have a lot of dynamics in our music because no one wants to listen to a million miles an hour all the time, Bannon responds when asked about the melodic mid-tempo groove of a song like Coral Blue. I really enjoy that song, it has a lot of twists musically that aggressive songs don't usually have and that's something we take pride in.
Lyrically Bannon approached All We Love We Leave Behind by once again writing about his own personal experiences, however there's no question that this time around his vocals are more direct and decipherable than they've been in the past. This is a personal record and all of the songs tell their own stories, Bannon explains. Every song is rooted in real life, documenting what I have experienced over the past few years. Correspondingly the title of the album is an apology letter to everything he has had to leave behind in order to pursue his path in art and music. Bannon explains that he feels like it's important to acknowledge these sacrifices in order to be a self aware individual.
All of our albums are emotional but I feel this is our most potent album to date, Bannon continues. For me a songs like 'Predatory Glow' and 'Empty on the Inside' have a tone and resonance that communicates in a new way for our band, he adds, chalking up this ability to the fact that the group have become better songwriters by spending so much time on the road and in the studio perfecting their craft. Success to me is creating something that's moving and fulfilling and I truly feel both of those things when I experience this album from start to finish.
Converge have always been the type of band that never fit into one subculture and the band credit that to the fact that since their 2001 landmark album Jane Doe they haven't had any member changes. I think because it's been the same four people for the past five records we've been able to really get comfortable with each other and develop our own personality, Ballou explains. I don't listen to much music outside of what we've recorded so I think we're more influenced by our own history of playing together than what's currently happening in any scene.
In other words when Ballou explains that Converge is the kind of band who have always existed between worlds, it's not just lip service. We don't have one typical type of listener but they tend to be intelligent people who can make up their own minds about things. That works to our advantage because they're willing to go on this journey with us and follow along with whatever twists and turns we take them on, he summarizes. Ultimately All We Love We Leave Behind may not be the most straightforward musical journey you'll embark on but it's one that you'll revisit over and over again to relive prior experiences and simultaneously create new ones. SunbatherSunbather is the highly anticipated new album from Deafheaven.
Recorded and engineered by Jack Shirley (Funeral Diner, Comadre) and designed by Nick Steinhardt (Touche Amore) Sunbather deals with the profound sadness found in the quest for one's personal perfection. Serving as an artistic lucid dream of warmth despite the stinging pain of life's cruel idealism.
With opener Dream House George Clarke's tortured vocals familiarly intertwine with Kerry McCoy's hypnotic guitar work before crashing into a wash of post-everything melody. This leads to the moving instrumental Irresistible a track that carries a twisted indie-like sensibility buried beneath glittery layers of guitar and piano. However it is in the title track and beyond where the maturation and growth of Deafheaven brightly shines. In Sunbather they explore sonic peaks and valleys created by superb percussionist Daniel Tracy (new to the band for this recording). His inclusion brings new dynamics to light as an urgent pulse to the swirling musical chaos. Pushing bleak epic Vertigo and the dark emotional closer The Pecan Tree to new, awe-inducing heights.
Without question Sunbather is Deafheaven at the peak of their creative strength and vision of their young existence. A masterfully crafted work of art that will be renowned for years to come.1. Dream House

Fever HuntingModern Life Is War are one of the most beloved bands in the punk rock/hardcore world of the last decade, appealing to everyone from the jaded to the driven. The band released three highly influential albums before announcing a temporary hiatus in 2007.
"Fever Hunting" is Modern Life is War's triumphant 2013 return to form with original lineup of Chris Honeck, Matt Hoffman, Jeffrey Eaton, Tyler Oleson and John Eich in place. A true story of their collective coming of age, "Fever Hunting" plays and reads as an open diary of their last five years. Exposing every frayed nerve and internal struggle that it's creators carried deep within their hearts. Impassioned, embattled, and forever resilient to the world outside.
From the first strikes of the anthemic opener "Old Fears, New Frontiers" it's apparent that Modern Life Is War have not lost a step in absence, but have quickened pace on their own path. From there, the outpouring is overwhelming as eleven songs unfurl with equal and unmatched emotional weight. All of them bravely moving forward rather than resting on past laurels. Grand BloodGrand Blood from Doomriders is the follow up to their highly regarded 2010 album Darkness Comes Alive. Grand Blood was engineered by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios, and features artwork from Thomas Hooper as well as packaging from Ryan Patterson (Coliseum) and J. Bannon.
Where Darkness Comes Alive was smooth and heavy in tone Grand Blood is jagged and hard in its heart. Grand Blood is Doomriders pushing themselves into wilder sonic territory previously unexplored by the band. In songs like Back Taxes and Bad Vibes, an angular noise rock influence takes the lead, creating a harsh and charged environment. Not to fret, the hooks Doomriders are known for are as sharp as ever though, sinking into songs like the personal Dead Friends and melodious and emotional Gone to Hell. Two songs that impressively showcase Nate Newton's evolving vocal ability. While monsters Father Midnight, New Pyramids, and Death In Heat are Doomriders at their heaviest and discordant to date. Try MeYour favorite band's favorite band, Self Defense Family enjoys a distinct renown within the punk community. Well-respected and critically lauded but difficult and idiosyncratic, the band has done things their way almost to a fault. Eschewing sing-alongs and easy anthems in favor of personal lyrics, they stand apart from their contemporaries in punk and hardcore. Their strangely tense guitar-work framed within otherwise hook laden songs lends the band an unmistakable sound. Opting to be heavy in emotion rather than heavy in sound.
Led by vocalist, lyricist, and personality Patrick Kindlon, Self Defense Family have extended their branches to organically include touring and session musicians. Allowing them to evolve into a musical collective with more than ten active members at any given time. Refractory ObdurateWovenhand is a band led by dedicated life-musician and lyricist, David Eugene Edwards. Over the last two decades, his prolific work in both Wovenhand and the legendary 16 Horsepower has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians throughout the expansive alternative music world.
Wovenhand cannot be described in traditional terms. Their sound is an organic, weavework of neo-folk, post rock, punk, old-time, and alternative sounds. All coming together as a vehicle for David's soulful expression and constant spiritual self exploration. Sometimes sad and sorrowed and at other times uplifting, Wovenhand are always unforgettable in spirit and sound.
Refractory Obdurate is the latest album from Wovenhand. Joining David on this album are longtime percussionist Ordy Garrison, along with musicians Chuck French and Neil Keener (Planes Mistaken For Stars, Git Some).
