    Sex Packets

Sex Packets is the debut album from the 1990s rap group Digital Underground and is a concept album about G.S.R.A. (Genetic Suppression Relief Antidotes), a pharmaceutical substance that is produced in the form of a large glowing pill about the size of a quarter, which comes in a condom-sized package and is allegedly developed by the government to provide its intended users such as astronauts with a satisfying sexual experience in situations where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.

Hot on the heels of the full-length Audacity Of Hype, the Guantanamo School of Medicine- featuring Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms), Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey), Billy Gould (Faith No More), & Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle)- roar back with these ferocious tracks!

The band's twin guitar attack retains some of the space-punk overtones and spy-music-on-meth chaos of Dead Kennedys while adding a healthy dose of Detroit style proto-punk, flavored with Weiss' industrial excursions into metal percussion.

This is Jello Biafra's 1st full-time band since Dead Kennedys broke up in 1986, and it shows in the depth and breadth of Jello's musical chops and lyrical triumphs on these five originals and his reworking of the Deviants classic Metamophosis Exploration.

Art by Jim Altieri and Michel Langevin (of VOIVOD)! Mixed & recorded by long-time Biafra co-conspirator Matt Kelley, whose other work includes Victim's Family, The Coup, Digital Underground, Hieroglyphics, Jello & The Melvins, and the 1st Jello & Guantanamo School of Medicine.

    Watermelon, Chicken & Grits

Like their moniker suggests, the six-man hip-hop group known as Nappy Roots are raw and untamed, yet deeply connected to the musical past. The Kentucky-based collective (Big V, Ron Clutch, Fishscales, R. Prophet, B. Stille, and Skinny DeVille) first made a name for themselves with their two independently released collections - 1998's COUNTRY FRIED CESS and and 1999's NO COMB, NO BRUSH, NO FADE, NO PERM - as well as with live shows alongside such hip-hop stars as Digital Underground, Youngbloods, Jim Crowes, 112, Cashmoney Millionaire, 8 Ball, Ruffryders, MJG, Sole, and Twista. In addition, the group scored with their version of Riches To Rags (Mmmkay), which was featured on Atlantic's 1999 release, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE - SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT.

Now, with their long-awaited Atlantic Records debut, WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ, Nappy Roots are ready to spread their unique sound and vision from coast to coast. The group's organically funky hip-hop stylings blend serious lyrical science and Dirty South grooves, notably on tracks like the ruminating Life's A Risk and the block-rockin' party anthem, Ballin On A Budget. Produced by such esteemed hip-hop studio whizes as Carlos Broady (The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Black Rob, India.Aire), Mike City (Sunshine Anderson, Bilal), the Trackboyz (Abyss), Jazze Pha (Ludacris, Too $hort), and Troy Johnson (Ray-J, Lil' Mo), WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ is likely to propel Nappy Roots to the forefront of modern hip-hop and beyond.

"On December 13, Nico performed at another of her always strikingly original concert venues, this time in Reims Cathedral, where France has traditionally crowned her kings for centuries. Following the event, outraged Catholics throughout the country claimed the church was desecrated and cried out for a special purification ceremony for the monument"

A monstrous batch of instrumentals from the deep funk underground The Soul Investigators hail from the icy north of funky Finland where somehow theyve managed to carve out a sound thats harder, fiercer, and more kicking than most of the other funk acts recording in more southbound parts of the globe.

The drums are hard, the guitars are scratchy, and the organ cooks like a space heater in a fire trap on a cold Chicago night! All tracks are instrumentals, and the albums recorded with a messed-up sound that makes the whole thing feel like youve found a box of rare funky 45s! These guys are truly the kings of dirty funk as youll hear on titles that include Micro Popcorn, Mommas Gravy, Deep Fried Chitlins, Good Food, Greasy Pork, Midnight BBQ, and Greens Pleasetoo much Funky!

    Full Cold Moon

Cold Cave is the creative rebirth of acclaimed musician and writer Wesley Eisold. Cutting his teeth in underground bands American Nightmare (Give Up The Ghost) and Some Girls, Eisold's body of work has truly effected a generation of listeners. Through constant cross-pollination Eisold has gained mass appeal, influencing underground and popular culture with his ever evolving artistic vision.

With an already prolific number of releases, Cold Cave has become a name synonymous with the contemporary resurgence of Darkwave and Synth Pop sub-genres. Propelling Cold Cave to perform at world class museums The Getty and the Guggenheim, as well as performances with legends Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nine Inch Nails, among others.

Deathwish are proud to announce "Full Cold Moon" from Cold Cave, now for the first time on 12"LP vinyl format (a CD collection was released on Eisold's Heartworm imprint in 2014).

"Full Cold Moon" is a compilation of EP recordings originally individually released in 2013, now presented as one collection; "A Little Death to Laugh", "Oceans With No End", "God Made the World", "Black Boots", and "Nausea, the Earth and Me". Notably this is also the first vinyl appearance of the song "Dandelion" as well as the entire "Nausea, the Earth and Me" EP (previously only available on limited CD and Digital formats). This is Cold Cave at it's most artistically skeletal, similar to the celebrated "Cremations" and "Love Comes Close" releases. Twelve minimal compositions driven by Eisold's synth derived hooks, alluring vocals, and compelling character.

    Horses (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 44/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Patti Smith, the first published poet to move her poetry completely into rock 'n' roll and to entice experimental rock fans into the forbidden cinema of her hallucinatory fantasy (New York Times), began her musical career unconventionally. It took off at a poetry reading where she was backed by Lenny Kaye on guitar; later star photographer Robert Mapplethorpe financed her punk-rock cult single Hey Joe. In 1975, encouraged by her success, Patti Smith released Horses, an album in which she fused rock riffs and spoken rhythms to create a punk-trash sound. The rock scene was electrified, raging about the best garage sound of the 70s (Creem Magazine) and conjectured that Smith had drawn up material from Rimbaud, Burroughs, Dylan and Velvet Underground into a hot needle and injected it under the skin (Sounds Magazine). Later productions were dismissed as sentimental and self-loving outpourings, since the rock-poet didn't continue in the same vein as Horses, with its metallic harshness and raw language. That's why this recording remains an impressive unique production by a visionary rock 'n' roll singer.

    Musicians:

    • Patti Smith (guitar, vocals)

    • Richard Sohl (piano)

    • Lenny Kaye (bass, guitar, vocal)

    • Tom Verlaine, Allen Lanier (guitar)

    • Ivan Kral (bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals)

    • Jay Dee Daugherty (drums)

Recording: January 1975 at Electric Ladyland Studios, New York City, by Bernie Kirsh

    Production: John Cale

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark (Pure Pleasure)

Pete Brown was a Londoner and a veteran of the underground scene. Born in 1940, he first came to prominence as a poet. He was just 14 when his first poem appeared in Evergreen Revue in the US. Then in the early sixties he worked alongside another British poet Mike Horowitz. His direct involvement with rock music came when he was asked to form a songwriting partnership with Jack Bruce to write lyrics for Cream and the partnership proceeded to produce the lyrics for many of their finest songs: Wrapping Paper, I Feel Free, Sunshine Of Your Love and White Room. After the demise of Cream, Brown continued to write with Bruce but also began his own recording career with The Battered Ornaments who included Chris Spedding. After an initial 45, which with its wailing saxes and effective vocals was underrated, the band recorded this album which was a mixture of jazz-rock and blues. Dark Lady, The Old Man and Station Song were among the fine tracks and the latter later got a further airing on the Before Singing Lessons compilation. Station Song and Dark Lady had earlier featured along with Travelling Blues on the ultra-rare promo-only Harvest Sampler in 1969.

Brown then suffered the humiliation of being thrown out of the band the night before they had a Hyde Park gig with The Rolling Stones. Brown's response was to form a new band, Piblokto!

This release breaks the long sides down to four sides of vinyl which enhances the sound quality considerably. Also of interest is that it has been mastered in the same studio at Abbey Road as was the initial release and from the same original analogue tape masters.

With John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Jack DeJohnette, this group rivaled the best fusion bands of the day. It must have been an intimidating challenge for a young Czech bassist to lead such a group on his debut album as a frontman, especially since he composed five of the six tracks. Recorded in late 1969, roughly the same time as the historic Bitches Brew, and the year before Vitous began a stint with the innovative Weather Report, this was trend-setting fusion. It's produced by Herbie Mann, for whom Vitous played on such albums as Memphis Underground and Stone Flute.

    -Mark Allan/AMG

Miroslav's first album; superb even in the 21st century. If you are interested in finding out about the beginnings of 'jazz-rock fusion' this record is absolutely crucial. DeJohnette and Mclaughlin both had something to prove at the time and it shows. Vitous had won a scholarship to Boston's Berklee school of music but on this evidence, he didn't need it at all and probably scared the heck out of the teaching staff before he left to go with Herbie Mann, the occasional Miles gig, and the album sessions with Shorter and Zawinul that led to Weather Report. A brilliant and influential debut from a prodigious talent; buy this one!

Red vinyl version w/ bonus tracks not found on original vinyl pressing

Jedi Mind Tricks is currently one of the hottest underground hip-hop groups in the United States. Their sophomore album, Violent By Design, has sold over 85,000 copies and is regarded by many as one of the best independent hip-hop albums ever recorded.

Babygrande Records is proud to present The Psycho-Social... LP which is the cult classic prequel to Violent by Design. Described by the Source Magazine as ahead of its time and by CMJ as A must own for anyone who cares about hip-hop culture, The Psycho-Social was originally released only in limited pressings on vinyl 1997. The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol. 2

Minimal Wave is both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. The Minimal Wave Tapes is the first official anthology of Minimal Wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. Theyve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf.

The Minimal Wave musical genre was hallmarked by the use of the analog synths and drum machines manufactured in the '70s and '80s, and characterized by simple music structures made by musicians working in the early D.I.Y. asthetic: recording on tape in their home studios, creating their own album artwork, and often collaborating via postage mail. The fanzine CLEM (Contact List Of Electronic Musicians) was very influential in creating a worldwide community for this sort of music, before digital technology and the internet came into play.

Minimal Wave the label was founded in New York City in 2005 by Veronica Vasicka, who focused the label solely on obscure Minimal Wave recordings, remastering and releasing them on limited vinyl and digitally.

The Minimal Waves Tapes fits neatly into Stones Throw Records' own tradition of compiling or reissuing the independent music of the past which influences the independent music we make today ie '60s funk (The Funky 16 Corners), early '80s hip-hop (The Third Unheard) and West Coast electro/rap (Arabian Prince's Innovative Life) to name a few. Featuring 14-tracks on gatefold 2LP.

Unseen Photos, Flyers, And Band Ephemera

The South Africa of the late 1970s was neither the right place nor time to launch a mixed-race punk band. Yet, following the student-inspired Soweto Uprising of 1976, it was also exactly the right conditions to foster a band like National Wake, one formed in an underground commune, and one whose very name exists in protest at the divisive, racist apartheid regime. Never before collected together, Light In The Attic is set to release National Wake's full body of work as Walk In Africa 1979-81.

Featured heavily in the recent documentary Punk In Africa , National Wake played punk, reggae and tropical funk, equally at home in the city's rock underground and the township nightclub circuit. Ivan Kadey started the band with two brothers, Gary and Punka Khoza. The three were from different worlds - while Ivan was an outsider, a Jewish orphan born in the traditional Johannesburg immigrant neighborhood, Gary, Punka and their family were forcibly moved to the troubled township of Soweto under the apartheid regime. Later joined by guitarist Steve Moni, the whole band grew up against a backdrop of township unrest, social upheaval and suburban tedium that characterized apartheid-era South Africa.

National Wake released just one album, in 1981. It sold approximately 700 copies before being withdrawn under government pressure. The band subsequently disintegrated, but their influence could be traced in the racially mixed post-punk underground centered around Rockey Street in Johannesburg throughout the 1980s, their legacy transmitted through fanzines and underground cassette trading.

Sadly, Gary and Punka Khoza both passed away in their 40s. Kadey now works as an architect in Los Angeles, but his attention eventually turned back to the band as their legacy grew in the digital era, with the emergence of specialized music websites and Punk In Africa leading to their rediscovery. Czech State Radio memorably described the band as "perhaps the most dissident music scene of the 20th century: a multi-racial punk band in a fascist police state."

In 2011, Kadey re-released the band's self-titled album on CD in South Africa, but spoke about having more than 20 tracks that had never seen the light of day - until now. "All of these recordings put together they speak of the whole evolution of the band," he has said. "From a sort of naive, almost belief that we could miraculously change everything to realizing what a struggle it was, and what the country was going through and what it would go through."

    Along The Way

From the mid-western underground consciousness, guitarist/producer Mark McGuire
emerges with his forthcoming 2014 Dead Oceans debut Along the Way. The conceptual
album details the inner journey of an individual seeking definition and enlightenment. For
those following McGuire's musical ascent thus far, the record is a culmination of a prodigious
    and prolific artist.

Playing with a wide variety of instruments and styles on Along the Way, McGuire presents his
unique vision of modern psychedelia. Using electric and acoustic guitars, a Talkbox, drum
machines, a mandolin and lots in between, McGuire conducts a sonic exploration of the
inner self. "This story is an odyssey through the vast, unknown regions of the mind," he
explains in the liner notes," The endless unfolding of psychological landscapes, leading to
perpetual discoveries and expansions, in a genuinely emergent and infinite world of worlds."

Mark McGuire first came to national attention as part of Cleveland's drone collective
Emeralds, a band that single handedly created a paradigm shift toward the meditative in an
era of underground music best known for noise and chaos. Their albums for the Editions
Mego, No Fun and Hanson labels, among others, remain treasured to a generation of tape
collecting misfits. Over the course of many independent and self-releases the individual
members of the band exhibited their solo material from their earliest days. McGuire's first
solo release in 2006 showcased a natural affinity for melody, slowly disintegrating loops and
composition. When he kept audiences spellbound with live performances of his material it
made believers of concertgoers across the world. By 2009 his solo debut album Living With
Yourself was garnering praise from press and audiences alike. McGuire as a solo performer
made a direct connection with fans through his hypnotic playing, becoming more complex
in its dynamics and phrasings. The album's 2011 follow up Get Lost furthered the guitarist's
palate to include a sun-bleached digital effect. The music continually grew over itself as delays
decayed and new ones took their place, each layer revealing colors and sunspots, reflecting the
    expanse of roads traveled.

The last few years have found McGuire touring with friends like Ducktails as well as
performing as a fifth member of the legendary Afghan Whigs, collaborating with artists like
Ponytail's Dustin Wong and releasing his own R&B influenced Road Chief project. 2014 will
bring more touring, more collaborations, more videos and media; expanding horizons that
    all start with a sound.

    Transformer (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 194/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

It is well known that comparisons seldom get to the root of the matter, but in the case of Lou Reed, for example, they certainly reveal the unassuredness of those people who made them. Is he or isn't he the Chuck Berry or Sergeant Pepper of the Seventies, or is he deliberately building up an image of himself as an ultra-sensitive Frankenstein, who lived out his neuroses and drug trips in horrific sound? Some records are so unbelievably repulsive, raged the magazine Rolling Stone, that one would best like to take physical revenge on the artists who commit such offences.

The album Transformer, however, can by no means be classified as a case of 'acoustic bodily harm'. It appeared just a few months after the somewhat unsuccessful appearance of Lou Reed's fairly underground first release and rocketed straight into the charts. This production had two British guardian angels to help it on its way, namely David Bowie and Mick Ronson, both of whom obviously knew how to steer Reed's songwriting qualities into safe waters, without watering down his biting sarcasm and humorous provocation.
And that's why grating guitar rock (Vicious) is found alongside a bittersweet, tender ballad (Perfect Day) and even an old-time jazz parody (Goodnight Ladies) which is sung with a tongue a heavy as lead. Why then compare this highly original music mix with others, when it's so much easier to hear this record for what it is - a truly cult album?

    Musicians:

    • Lou Reed (vocal, guitar, arranger)

    • Mick Ronson (vocal, guitar, piano, arranger)

    • David Bowie (vocal, arranger)

Big Band And Quartet In Concert (Speakers Corner)

Thelonious Monk could walk from his flat to New York's famous Philharmonic Hall on the corner of 64th Street and Broadway when he made his very first appearance there with his Big Band in December 1963. And the other musicians could get there on the underground: Phil Woods, Steve Lacy, Thad Jones - all of them were members of Monk's closest circle of collaborators. It is no wonder then that the well-known themes were highly agreeable and harmonious. I Mean You, Four In One and Epistrophy resounded through the auditorium, the audience was thrilled, Thelonious laughed and danced and a short while later fans could listen to parts of the concert on a recording released by Columbia Records. In a break for a smoke, Monk sat himself down at the piano and played Darkness On The Delta - nocturnal atmosphere pure.

Does it bear the patina of times long past? Absolutely not! Thelonious Monk is as red-hot as he ever was.

    Phonography

Phonography was lo-fi legend R. Stevie Moores first vinyl release only 100 copies were pressed in 1976. The album (including a slightly larger 1978 pressing) barely earned the artist lunch money. But Phonography has since become the cornerstone of the Do-It-Yourself movement, while establishing Moore as the Granddaddy of home recording. Both Rolling Stone and Spin have proclaimed it one of the most influential independent releases of the past 50 years. Phonography was recorded by a self-taught control-freak, using cheap, malfunctioning analog equipment. Robert Steven Moore was born in 1952, in Nashville. His dad, veteran bassist/producer Bob Moore, taxied between sessions for major stars (including Elvis Presley). But Stevie preferred Brit Invasion, Zappa, Brian Wilsons idiosyncratic arrangements, and outliers like the Shaggs. At the urging of his supportive uncle, Harry Palmer, he moved to New Jersey in 1976.

The Phonography material was recorded by this one-man virtual band at home between 1974 and 1976 with a pair of analog open-reel stereo decks and no multi-tracking equipment. Moore built songs starting with a rhythm track (e.g., played on drums, furniture, or boxes), upon which he layered instrumental and vocal tracks in a primitive sound-on-sound technique. Multiple generations of sound caused frequency loss and sonic distortion the embodiment of lo-fi but these are charming artifacts that dont obscure the brilliance of the compositions and Moores masterful music eccentricities. Moore and Palmer culled the top-tier songs, which were interspersed with spoken word, audio veritÉ, and radio snippets to create a program effect. The song styles were eclectic, reflecting Stevies omnivorous music appetite: hard rock, sweet ballads, Britpop, guitar raves, glam, and Zappa-esque weirdness. The album laid the foundation for Moores four-decade underground career.

He has self-released hundreds of albums on each successive eras format du jour (cassette, LP, CD, digital download). Hes had vinyl and CD compilations produced worldwide on two dozen indie labels. For a songwriter with a massive catalog of prime material, Moores revenue stream has barely afforded him the luxury of replacing gear plagued by worn-out switches. Yet most of the surviving labels who turned deaf ears to R. Stevie Moore are now, like him, struggling to make a buck on their catalogs. Their corner-office execs come and go. R. Stevie Moore is still here. And Phonography is back.

    Pretty Hate Machine (2010 Remaster)

Fans can now revisit the conception of Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor's Null Corporation has teamed up with UMe/The Bicycle Music Company to release Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster on 12/7/2010. After completing the score for David Fincher's The Social Network, Reznor oversaw the digital remastering of Pretty Hate Machine from the newly unearthed original tapes with engineer Tom Baker (whose NIN credits include The Downward Spiral, Broken, The Fragile, With Teeth and Ghosts). This remastered version includes an eleventh track, a cover of Queen's Get Down Make Love, originally the B-side to the Sin single and produced by Al Jourgensen. Rob Sheridan, NIN's longtime art director, has also re-imagined the packaging of Pretty Hate Machine under Reznor's supervision.

As a young musician in Cleveland, Ohia, Reznor took a job at a local recording studio and employed unused studio time to develop his own material. The nascent album was later recorded with his favorite producers including Flood/Mark Ellis (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey), John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), Adrian Sherwood (Ministry, Cabaret Voltaire) and Keith LeBlanc (Trackhead). The result was the first Nine Inch Nails album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine. All songs were written, arranged, programmed and performed by Reznor. The album featured the breakthrough singles Sin, Down In It and Head Like A Hole, and ultimately sold over 3 million copies, reaching Triple Platinum sales status. In the wake of the album's inital underground success, NIN soon developed a reputation as one of the best live acts in rock and jointed the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991. NIN have since sold more than 18 million albums, collected Grammy Awards and headline arenas, amphitheaters and festivals worldwide.

The Bicycle Music Company acquired the rights to Pretty Hate Machine from a division of Prudential Securities in the spring of 2010. It was Bicycle's intention from the onset to enable Reznor to regain some control of this lost piece of NIN's legacy, resulting in this artist approved 2010 reissue of one of music's most groundbreaking and influential albums. Note: The previous CD version was reissued in 2005 but was not overseen by Reznor and is now out of print.

Reznor is currently working on new music as a member of the group How To Destroy Angels, continuing his Nine Inch Nails efforts and composing for future film score projects.

    Rope Commercial Vol.1

The scope of Robert Beatty's hydra-headed art practice has grown into an extreme articulation
of unconned creativity across multiple disciplines. A founding member of 2000's noise outt
Hair Police, as well as visionary illustrator and album-art designer for many of this era's most
celebrated underground artists, Robert Beatty records his solo work under the name Three
Legged Race. Come May 27, 2014, Three Legged Race will release the rst volume of Rope
Commercial, a planned series of EPs premiering through the label Underwater Peoples.

Rope Commercial Vol. 1 will be the rst Three Legged Race record since 2012's
acclaimed Persuasive Barrier (Spectrum Spools / Editions Mego) and Beatty's follow up to last
year's video score collection, Soundtracks for Takeshi Murata (Glistening Examples, 2013).

Beatty's recent celebrated performances as Three Legged Race abandoned prior
synthesizer-dependent set-ups in favor of an intentionally dematerialized approach, employing just a sequencer program in an iPhone, and a lone tape machine. Conceptually, Beatty is
detantly shrugging o the fetishized hardware-oriented model so rampant in current
electronic music discourse. Beatty steps further in this recording, having added acoustic
instruments (dulcimer and piano) and thoroughly processing sampled elements to warp the
    whole into un-recognizable dimensions.

    Outtted as a picture-disc, Beatty's design features a creamy, neon-green urban
landscape; the face of a humanoid gure is merged with a screen of a smartphone, its
consciousness fused to the glass. Dangling from the phone is one leg outtted in a woman's
heel, presumably its sole means of transport. These kind of pathetic cyborg gures in states of
physical ux frequently appear in Beatty's art. They function neatly as windows into Beatty's
music as well, with its electronically marred voices and barren sonic spaces. These gures are
Beatty's torpid avatars, in both his music and art, their humanism is strained by a confounding
    digital synergy.

The picture-disc is an apt setting for Beatty's airbrush work, his favored rendering
tool, and the general modus operandi of Beatty's electronic music as Three Legged Race. In all,
Beatty renews obsolete materials discarded from a voracious commercial culture, and employs
them in strangely poignant contexts. In Rope Commercial Vol. 1, such found samples are diced
and strewn into uneasy chapters. There is the dizzying, terse All Ajax Dial, the interplanetary
gale of Aside From Each Other and Together Overnight, the faintly whirring New Government, the white noise of The Humidity Mascot and perhaps Beatty's motif-to-be Rope
Commercial. In this title track alone, something of the whole EP is condensed: intentionally
un-heroic melodies plod out over a darkly redundant groove and voices are haltered in the
instance of utterance. Its electronic music most overtly, but defrocked of its sheen, with any
conceivable hallmark of commercialism littered on the gravel.

    Solid Gold Heart

The words and primary voice are those of Jad Fair, that
enduringly idiosyncratic artist revered in discerning pockets of
the global indie rock underground for decades. Danielson's
Daniel Smith has long admired Fair, drawing inspiration from
Half Japanese (the band Fair formed with his brother in the '70s)
on through to his prolific career today. Their discussions of
collaborating finally came to fruition when Joyful Noise
Recordings designated Fair its "Artist In Residence" for 2014
and Danielson was tapped as one of 4 artists (including R. Stevie
Moore; Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake; and Strobe Talbot) to
record separate respective albums with him for a boxed-set
limited release. "Flattered and honored" is how Smith sums up
his feelings about the project -- and grateful to get a game-plan
for what always seemed a complementary pairing.

Sounds Familyre will be doing their own non-limited release of
Solid Gold Heart in June, on CD, digital and gold vinyl. The 11
tracks of sweet collaboration collected under said title sound like
what you might expect, given the respective artists: gleaming
tunes of sincere sing-speak, resplendent with sparkling back-up
vocals and warmly melodic, inventive instrumentation; a
sunshine-bright outlook of positive encouragement to keep
"rockin' on the side of gooood" -- because, after all, "We
deserve chocolate cake/ We deserve apple pie/ Enjoy your life
    ..."

The collaborative process commenced with Fair sending Smith
his unique vocal demos of recited lyrics with articulated mouth-sound musical qualities (some bits remain in the final mixes).
Smith then wrote music for each chosen track, eventually getting
Fair and drummer Gilles Rieder into his Clarksboro, NJ studio
to record their parts during a few hours break from touring.
Aside from Smith's own guitar-playing and singing throughout
the album, there were contributions made by his brothers David
and Andrew on percussion, and sisters Rachel and Megan along
with wife Elin on vocals. Spicing things up at Fair's behest were
members of Texas art-polka band Brave Combo: Carl Finch on
accordion and keys; Jeffrey Barnes on sax and woodwinds; and
Danny O'Brien on trumpet. Bringing things full-circle was
Kramer (Shockabilly, Bongwater, B.A.L.L. et al.) on bass, who
also co-mixed and mastered the album.

The result is a beguiling blend that builds off each participant's
strengths, truly a fresh sum that is greater than its parts. "The
goal was to make 3-minute pop songs, as accessible and fun and
immediate as possible," notes Smith. And that's what you'll
hear, each track an uplifting, mutually enhanced concoction.

Anyone who ever had a Solid Gold Heart -- wouldn't they want
to turn around and share it? Of course they would. Jad Fair and
Danielson are happy to offer up theirs.

    Planetario

From their humble start, file-sharing musical ideas and producing their first album in separate countries during the dawn of the internet, Novalima is now a live musical force revered worldwide for breaking boundaries and uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities, and generations. They have created an inspiring movement and revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru by bridging a longstanding divide between the mainstream and the minority Afro-Peruvian community, who have struggled against discrimination and cultural dissolution for generations. Over the last two years, Novalima created their newest offering, Planetario to be released June 16th on Wonderwheel Recordings. The album's name signals Novalima's musical growth and international connections - much of the album was recorded on tour when they collaborated with top local and international musicians. There is a strong connection to Colombia created through a remarkable recording session in Bogota organized by members of La-33 including Sidestepper vocalist Eka Muñoz, Pernett and La Mamba Negra. The album also has offerings from global artists such as Marc de Clive Lowe (UK/NZ), Panko from Ojos de Brujo (Spain), and Kumar (Cuban rapper based in Barcelona). The album's debut single, "Como Yo" (to be released May 19th on digital single and 7" vinyl) honors the legendary Peruvian percussionist and longtime band member Mangue Vasquez who passed away in 2014. Not one for sentimentality, Mangue implored his friends to celebrate his life with song and dance when he passed rather than shed any tears. The life affirming lyrics are underscored by rolling percussion, twinkling synths, and a celebratory sing-song chant chorus: Gozen la vida como yo - Enjoy life, like I do. Novalima has garnered worldwide critical acclaim from mainstream (NPR, UK Guardian, Wall Street Journal, La Presse, Metro, Billboard) and underground media (Giant Step, Remezcla, Nat Geo) alike, delivered legendary performances around the world at festivals such as Roskilde, WOMAD, Pirineos Sur, NYC Central Park, Montreal Jazz Festival and Chicago's Millennium Park, earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and were featured in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's hit Mexploitation movie Machete. For their upcoming year of international touring Novalima has designed a brand new live show that will debut in Lima at the Grand Teatro National on May 28th as part of the country's celebration of 100 years of Afro-Peruvian culture. Novalima''s international tour begins in North America this June.

    Poets Were My Heroes

Morning Glory is made up of the stuff that the gritty, punk-crust motherland of New York's infamous Lower East Side has been known to spawn. This group of punkers and squatters had very humble beginnings indeed. Already in various other New York punk bands, Morning Glory first became the spark of an idea when Ezra Kire (Leftöver Crack, Choking Victim, INDK) took time off from touring and started to write some tunes in his NYC apartment.

In 2001, with nothing but a drum machine and an 8-track reel-to-reel, Ezra wrote and recorded the songs that would become Morning Glory's first LP, This Is No Time ta Sleep. Though it was self-recorded, home-released and had no touring support, it still managed to create a small but ubiquitous underground buzz. With a virtuosic range of musical elements such as ska, punk, metal, and even some rhyming, its catchy, anthemic sing-alongs showcased Ezra's flourishing writing talents. And while his lyrics stayed true to the caustic political edge of his other bands, the overall message remained more optimistic and leaned towards the humanistic, personal side of life.

In 2002, Ezra finally assembled a live band, handpicking musicians from the local NYC punk scene, including members of Nausea, World/Inferno Friendship Society and Stockyard Stoics. This lineup recorded the EP, The Whole World is Watching, released on Blacknoise Records in 2003. While the years that followed were spent recording and touring with Leftöver Crack, Morning Glory took a back seat.

But after these long years of touring, Ezra finally decided to give Morning Glory the attention it deserved in 2010 and began writing songs for what was to become the epic new album, Poets Were My Heroes. In the summer of 2011, Ezra and the band (with longtime members Early Gates, "Metal" Chris and Lucky Strano alongside new guitarist Adam Schrager) hit the studio with a barrage of new material. Picture the sonic kaleidoscope of punk noise meeting strings, horns, choirs, pianos and organs over a web of distorted guitars and marching, single kick pedal drums.

These are the sounds that make up Poets Were My Heroes, Morning Glory's Fat Wreck Chords debut and first full-length album recorded with a live band. Re-enlisting producer Jesse Cannon (The Menzingers, Saves the Day), a wealth of material was recorded, with only the very strongest songs being chosen to make up the album. It is both grand and elaborate, with each song evoking a different mood and style, challenging the musicianship of even the most dexterous players, while still maintaining its punk-inspired simplicity.

While the band itself has described themselves as "somewhere between Oasis and The Clash," they continue to break rules and write music that is true only to themselves, adhering to no genres, creeds or political factions. The sing-along choruses give the band a broader appeal than the standard politi-kill punk acts, but the key message is more subversive: "Think for yourself, decide for yourself, make up your own mind and love your friends. Only you know what is right for you. Together we are what we can't be alone." It's this unity in diversity that makes the band special and not just another punk outfit. Double vinyl includes digital download of full album.

    Shortwave Nights

Shortwave Nights is the debut album by Hiss Tracts, a new duo featuring David Bryant (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fire To Flames) and Kevin Doria (Growing, Total Life). The two met in 2004 and struck up a musical friendship that led to three Growing records being made at The Pines (Bryant's recording studio in Montreal) and a separate collaboration between the two, initially in conjunction with experimental filmmaker Karl Lemieux (also GY!BE's current 16mm auteur/projectionist). Rehearsal tapes from a set of sessions for a Lausanne Underground Film Festival performance in 2008 became the foundation and starting point for Hiss Tracts; David and Kevin continued working throughout 2009-2013, but much of the material from their earliest session is still present, in one state or another, within the tracks on this debut album.

The sonic preoccupations of Bryant and Doria are well-known and well-documented across many highly acclaimed recordings over the past fifteen years, from the organic, group-based, semi-improvised collage albums of Set Fire To Flames to the glimmering, immersive minimalism of Growing and the more maximalist full-spectrum noise works of Total Life. David and Kevin are instrumental music practitioners of uncommon depth and intensity; Hiss Tracts opens new collaborative, procedural and narrative pathways for these fine musicians to continue exploring soundscape-based composition and production. Both are guitar players, and the electric guitar figures as both recognizable and unrecognizable source instrument on Shortwave Nights, but the deployment of a wide range of additional analog sources and signals ensures that there is no confusing this for a guitar-based drone, noise or post-rock record.

Shortwave Nights defies categorization by terms like drone or ambient and it does not easily slip into any of the predominant subgenres that have proliferated around studio-based soundscape work in recent years. Insofar as drone is a touchstone, this has mostly to do with the approach to mixing, which tends towards a transcendent/trance-inducing integration of elements into a unified, saturated, wall-of-sound stereo field. The album contains no beats or programming and very little that is identifiably loop-based or overtly sampled and sampler-driven. Occasional deployments of digital signal processing remain firmly in the service of Hiss Tract's overriding framework and commitment to analog sources and human instrumentation. This is not an electronic record, nor does it sit comfortably at either the pastoral or spooky/sinister poles of any ambient or 'whatever'-wave spectrum; it can perhaps best be placed within the broad lineages of post-industrial and musique concrète.

Meditative and visceral, humming with the electromagnetic atmosphere through which all manner of frequencies, transmissions and surveillances pass and collide, Shortwave Nights strikes an evocative balance between sonics captured-channeled-harnessed vs. composed-sculpted-performed, with an almost documentary rigour and restraint that nonetheless remains profoundly charged and engaged. Constellation is thrilled to introduce this new project with a brilliant debut album that has heavily infiltrated our brains and bloodstreams since Bryant and Doria first played us the nearly-finished recordings in the fall of 2013. Thanks for listening.

    Kur-Nu-Gi-A

PICTURE DISC REISSUE OF EDGE OF SANITYS FIRST PROPER DEMO ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1990

Edge of Sanity's first proper demo KUR-NU-GI-A was recorded and released in 1990. It sold well beyond any expectations and gave the band a good reputation in the growing Metal underground. After the release of the demo the band signed to Black Mark and within a year the band had their debut album 'Nothing But Death remains' released.

Singer/Producer Dan Swano had this to say about the release:
I always felt we grew up a bit too fast, We got caught up in the growing Death Metal scene and tuned down the guitars and bought the 'right' distortion pedals and tried to be the new Entombed. This demo showcases the original sound of Edge of Sanity. During this period we still listened to a lot of progressive and challenging metal of all kinds and I still believe the songs have their true version on this demo. I transferred the original 4 track cassette masters, using state of the art digital technology, and remixed them and finally gave them the sound I dreamt of giving them 21 years ago. The dream of finally having this classic recording released on 12 picture disc has come true. While digging in the vaults, I found a lot more interesting stuff, so expect more 'post mortem' release from Edge of Sanity.
