Open Architecture High Output MC Phono Cartridges

Designed for exceedingly low noise levels, wide dynamic range and the highest possilbe fidelity in its price class, Blackbird is destined to become an analog classic. Each cartridge is assembled using time honored, labor intensive techniques, hand calibrated and critically auditioned to meet the most rigorous standards of consistancy.

The main advantage of high output moving coil cartridges is the elimination of any additional gain stages, resulting in an overall reduction of the noise floor. With 2.5mV directly driving a standard 47k Ohm RIAA phono stage, the best possible signal to noise ratio is realized. Nothing but music emerges from your most treasured recordings.

Marantz HD-DAC1 Headphone Amplifier with DAC-mode

This ultra-high quality dedicated Headphone Amplifier creates simply amazing sound because it uses Current Feedback amplification technologies from Marantz's high-end Premium 11 Series. Headphones have always added extra intensity to music, now with the Marantz HD-DAC1 that intensity reaches new climactic heights. This completely new product category comes with a new design, but as always with the unmistakable Marantz family resemblance.

The powerful HD-DAC1 can drive audiophile high-impedance headphones up to 600 ohm - with complete MODE ease. All thanks to its three-level gain control, Marantz HDAM-SA2 modules, a high current audiophile DAC (CS4398), and its Premium Quality fixed and variable RCA outputs. It is so powerful it not only drives headphones, you can also directly connect it to your Hi-Fi integrated amplifier or to a pair of active speakers or power amps. It's also highly connectable.

Optical and coaxial digital inputs as well as a USB-B port enable you to stream music directly from your PC or MAC; iDevices can also be connected via the USB port on the front. For even more connectivity we have also included an analog input. The USB-B works in asynchronous mode to support not only 192 kHz / 24bits high-resolution audio but also the DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz for maximized performance and the most direct way to enjoy excellent quality. To safeguard quality when connected to a computer, we built extended isolation around the USB-B input to eliminate the chance of a high frequency noise being generated by the computer when entering the HD-DAC1. We even included a jitter remover and Dual Clock for extreme accuracy. Info on volume, input, resolution, etc. is shown on the stylish Marantz Porthole Display. The solid aluminum front is supported by a double layer bottom plate and retro-style side panels. Pure craftsmanship.

    The Swan Singles Collection 1963-1967

The crunching, smack-in-your-face power chords driving hard rock's thundering heart can be traced directly back to Link Wray.

His pulverizing sound forged a new path for rock 'n' roll guitar, and he was never more
lethal than during his 1963-1967 tenure at Philadelphia-based Swan Records.

Link unleashed some of the nastiest licks of his phenomenal recording career on the mighty Swan seven-inchers, all of which are corralled on this Sundazed double 180gm gatefold edition, in crunchily accurate sound courtesy of the original mono master tapes!

Performance meets flexibility with the VPC•3. Add volume control and input selection to your system without additional gain for the purest signal.

Our new VPC•3 Passive Controller is a simple audio volume control/input selector, yet offers great performance and flexibility. Audio purists have recognized most signal sources, outboard DACs, and Phono preamps, have plenty of signal to drive an amplifier directly, without passing through another active gain stage, which adds distortions and coloration.

Similar to its predecessors VPC•1 and VPC•2, the new version is equipped with 2 pairs of inputs and a front panel switch for selection of "Input 1", "Mute" and "Input 2". The second pair of outputs has been added for increased flexibility. The main pair is variable through the volume control, while the 2nd pair can be internally configured as another variable pair for bi-amping or use with a powered subwoofer, or can be configured as a fixed level output. This allows the selected input to be sent to a recording device or second system.

Our new ALPS® Blue Velvet precision potentiometer uses offers excellent sound quality, channel to channel tracking, and long life. Careful design layout using 2 oz. copper circuit board, silver solder construction, and short signal path are used for best conductivity and optimum performance. All jacks, switches, and jumpers are high quality with gold plated contacts.

    Bronson Soundtrack

Before "Drive", Nicolas Winding Refn directed "Bronson". The film, starring Tom Hardy, tells the story of Charles Bronson, a young man who was sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing a post office and eventually ends up spending three decades in solitary confinement. He has become the most notorious inmate in England. "Bronson" already features elements that we associate with Nicolas Winding Refn's films, such as its pumping soundtrack. A modern "Clockwork Orange", "Bronson" features unforgettable music between the recurring electro-pop "Digital Versicolor" by Glass Candy, the menacing "The Electrician" by The Walker Brothers and music by the likes of New Order and Pet Shop Boys. Balancing this modern act, the film includes beautiful classical compositions by Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, Anton Bruckner and more!

    Duskland

"He dwells in the same darkness as Cass McCombs, punctuating the cobwebbed stillness with lowing organ and severe, almost pagan imagery. The Crimson moon, the city of refuge: Thesewould be hapless signi ers in
another singer's mouth. Cale's drawl molds them back into tremendous fra gments, oating in a skyline somewhere just beyond the dusk. All of Duskland possesses that same fantastic self-assurance." -Stereogum

Zachary Cale has been releasing records under his own name for just shy of a decade. Duskland,
the title of his latest record, is a work of craftsmanship full of elegant lyricism and mysterious
imagery; a collection of songs that look directly into the face of darkness yet drive beyond it,
    forging new paths.

Allegorical in nature, Cale's songs move away from the inward reveries of his last album, Blue Rider,
and divide outward into the voices of others. The album projects images of wide-open spaces and
landscapes constructed from half remembered dreams. There isn't always a clear resolution, characters
remain in a state of twilight, wandering from place to place in search of an undefined illumination. The
lyric: So many lifetimes I lived in one / I've got to bury them now / No surprises this time around /
Not beneath this crown, taken from I Left The Old Cell, aptly captures the human complexities found
    throughout the songs.

Taking cues from artists like Oh Mercy/Time Out of Mind era Dylan and Nick Cave's work with the
Bad Seeds, Duskland evokes a restless spirit, one that is informed by American myths and tall tales.
There's a Western flair to many of the album's songs with nods to soundtrack composers such as
Morricone and the dream-laden noir of Badalamenti. Many of the album's highlights maintain a
ceremonial grace. Sundowner opens the album with a lush organ progression played over a
plaintive march. As the tension builds, Cale muses Branded as a fugitive / Dressed in the clothes
of an innocent / Sirens ricochet / From bloodless lips I hear them call my name. From there the
album moves forward like one long processional; Cale leads his band through up-tempo folk rock
and charming country waltzes to minor key dirges and atmospheric instrumentals until ending with a
horn section dragging over a funeral beat in the long form ballad Low Light Serenade.

    Handcrafted in the USA

We debuted to the world a killer frikkin' cool phono stage at CES 2001. It was called, aquatic naming theme continuing, The Steelhead®, as it is an upstream device and has a very clever MC variable load auto tranny that we designed and our very own Manley Magnetics department executed (which makes the MC stage so very clever). Iron=transformer=steel makes sense to me...

It has two Moving Coil inputs with selectable impedance load 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 Ohms via Mr. Clever Steelhead transformer/autoformer. It also has variable and selectable Moving Magnet input impedances too 25, 50, 100, 200 Ohms and 47 kOhms. Very nifty is the selectable-dial-able-in-able-from-the-faceplate-able capacitive loading for all three of the MM & MC inputs 0 to 1100 picofarads in 10 picofarad steps. Very cool! Equalize baby! TEN picofard steps! Wow! Now you can really dial this in for perfect cartridge matching with ZERO penalty. None of this switching detracts from the sound quality or adds any extra anything to the signal path. Rest assured.

It's got six tubes. 2 x 6922 plus 4 x 7044 or 5687. It's got a big honkin' volume control. It can drive an amplifier directly if you want, if you don't do digital. Hey and if you happen to have three turntables set up, we give you 2 x MC and 1 x MM selectable inputs! It's got variable and fixed volume outputs. And All-tube really low Z tube buffered outputs. Like inherently 20 Ohms plus the little 47 Ohm OK drive those high capacitance audiophile cables why doncha resistor, so it's real output impedance is only 67 Ohms. No wanky cathode follower (oh bor-ing) output here like the other guys. We got your real low impedance all-tube outputs right here! It will drive anything and everything. Long cables, no problem.

It's got selectable gain 50, 55, 60, 65dB on a switch that even auto-mutes as you change it so no nasty bangs. Gain switch markings are referred to from the input of the 1st active electronics at 1 kHz to the fixed output @ 10k load, regardless of whether source is MM or XFMR stepped-up MC. It is not really practical to include MC step-up gain on the front panel markings due to the variable SOURCE impedances of the MC cartridges and the variable LOADING that the input XFMR will have on any given cartridge. All of this total MC gain variability should be confined to about 3 to 12 dB of range though. XFMR step-up gain plateaus as the load Z on a given MC cartridge is optimised...producing no VOLTAGE gain but in fact a bit more POWER gain... All this means you should set a load Z which sounds best with your particular MC cartridge and adjust gain to suit your system's operating level. Whatever you like. You will not blow anything up.

(Bottom line: there is plenty of gain... enough to do justice to your fave lo-output MC cartridges).

It's got a mute switch. It's got a just turn it down while I cue up so I don't throw my woofer cones across the room but I still want the same volume I was listening at before I flipped the side DIM switch. And what goes with DIM better than SUM which would be the MONO button... It has a killer hyper-regulated outboard power supply that plugs in on the huge-est connector you ever saw. And you can just hit the standby button to keep everybody off while you take a small holiday to Tahiti. A backlit MANLEY STEELHEAD illuminated badge reflects back to vinyl-days-of-yore while the millions of BLUE LEDs remind you that this is modern tube engineering design, baby!

The VARIABLE Outputs are controlled by the precision film dual NOBLE® volume control. They are SMOOTH action these days as the fashion went against the detented ones.

    This is a tweak-o-holic tube-lover's dream...

    Melco N1Z/2 Hardware

Melco N1Z/2 is the flagship of the new Mk2 series. True audiophile source components designed for both Ethernet connected Players (Streamers) and for connection to a USB connected DAC. The N1Z/2 is constructed as a true Hi-Fi source component with heavy anodised aluminium chassis sections bead blasted to a delightful finish, and with an internal rigid H frame to isolate vibration and isolate the various sections of the hardware. Twin power supplies with additional capacitor banks with audio grade film capacitors isolate the HDD from the data processing, and multiple stages of noise reduction and isolation ensure the quietest possible environment for the sensitive electronics. A precision low jitter clock handles the data flow whether to the USB-DAC or the Ethernet player. The drives are mounted on massive non-magnetic foundation plate, and the N1ZS20 uses 2nd generation SSD which is quite unlike IT SSD which seriously compromise sound quality. The SSDS are format as RAID 0 for optimum sound quality. The N1ZH has SFF drives - which are much less electrical noise than conventional 3.5 inch HDD. Operation of the N1Z is very convenient, with a dedicated Neutrik USB 2.0 port for a DAC, and then 3 USB 3.0 ports for Easy backup, Easy Expansion, Easy Import of CD or from USB drives, Easy Play without import from USB drives or CD loader so that a legacy CD collection can benefit from the latest DAC technology. All without ant require men for a PC or any IT type devices.

    Handcrafted in the USA

The JUMBO SHRIMP shares key outward features found in many of its counterparts both past and present. It is a twochannel single-ended line level control preamplifier with five sets of stereo inputs, and two sets of paralleled stereo line outputs. A five-position input selector switch routes the chosen signal directly to the first amplifier tube's control grid. Amplified signals, boosted about 4 times [11.8 dB] are then fed through a dedicated White-Follower stage (using 5670 triodes) to effortlessly drive the (motorized!) high quality ALPS stereo variable attenuator, known for its stability, long life, ease of servicing and good inter-channel level tracking characteristics. This is followed by a similarly appealing, center-detented ALPS stereo balance potentiometer.

The attenuator network output is then fed to a special White-follower output stage. This output circuit has been a favorite of ours for many years mainly due to the stage's inherently low output impedance, simplicity, wide bandwidth, ease of drive, modest feedback requirements and graceful overload characteristics. Ordinarily, the typical JUMBO SHRIMP user would not ever begin to approach the limits of this output stage under normal line and loading circumstances.

High quality polypropylene dielectric film-and-foil capacitors have been employed at all signal-coupling points in the circuit along with two extravagant 30 microfarad metalized monsters coupling the output stage signals to the output RCA jacks. These are all MultiCaps made by our buddy Bas Lim at Rel Cap. We know you would rather listen to superior capacitors such as these over some cheap electrolytic capacitors like you might find in other gear.

But the JUMBO SHRIMP's cardinal feature is its uncomplex non-inverting signal path. This minimal signal path approach is designed to bring unbalanced RCA-type line inputs up to levels suitable for proper drive of downstream power amplifiers in the simplest and most direct way possible. This is accomplished by using only three active stages, as described above, through the judicious use of vacuum tubes, whose purpose-designed application in audio amplifcation is, as always, pressed to full advantage. By so doing, the endeavor here is to provide the most direct, uncolored, quiet and wide-band signal path possible so that the native character of the chosen source material may be heard with out encumbrances from a set of imposed limitations brought on by the preamp. In this spirit, there are no provisions for balanced inputs or outputs. Since the whole guts of the Jumbo Shrimp are inherently single-ended, adding balanced I/O would require additional circuitry, transformers, or IC's which would inevitably color the sound.

Lastly, we would be remiss if we did not mention the clever REMORA REMOTE CONTROL that comes standard with every Jumbo Shrimp. This little box commands the motorized ALPS volume control via radio frequency signals, so it works through doors, walls, cabinets, you name it!

Merritone Rock Steady 2: This Music Got Soul 1966-1967

American rhythm & blues fervor, boosted by a multitude of sound systems playing 78rpm records on increasingly larger sets, gripped Jamaica from the late forties onwards but, towards the end of the decade, the American audience began to move towards a somewhat softer sound. The driving rhythm & blues discs became increasingly hard to find and the more progressive Jamaican sound system operators, realizing that they now needed to make their own music, turned to Kingston's jazz and big band musicians to record one-off custom cut discs. These were not initially intended for commercial release but designed solely for sound system play on acetate or 'dub plates' as they would later be termed. These 'specials' soon began to eclipse the popularity of American rhythm & blues and the demand for their locally produced music proved so great that the sound system operators began to release their music commercially on vinyl and became record producers. Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, Duke Reid 'The Trojan' and Prince Buster, who operated his Voice Of The People Sound System, were among the first to establish themselves in this new role and the nascent Jamaican recording industry now went into overdrive.

In 1954 Ken Khouri had numbered among the first far-sighted entrepreneurs to produce mento records with local musicians (mento is Jamaica's original indigenous music) before progressing to opening Jamaica's first record manufacturing plant. Three years later he moved his operation to Foreshore Road (later renamed Marcus Garvey Drive) where, with the assistance of the inestimable Graeme Goodall, he updated and upgraded his recording studio. The importance of this enterprising move was critical to the development of Jamaican music and its influence both profound and far-reaching.

"It was Ken Khouri's Federal Recording Studio, the womb that gave birth to the talented writers, artists and musicians that gave Jamaica its musical identity." Prince Buster

Federal Records was not only the place for the sound system men to record their music but it was also where they had their records manufactured and, consequently, the company enjoyed a near-total monopoly on recording and record pressing in Kingston. In 1963 Ken Khouri sold his one track board to Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, who established Studio One, and Ken imported the first stereo equipment to Jamaica and Federal began making stereo records. The following year WIRL (West Indies Records Limited) opened but the competition served to drive the company on to higher heights. Ken Khouri continued to work on his own productions and, in 1966, the seven-inch release of Hopeton Lewis' 'Take It Easy', recorded under the guidance of Trinidadian guitarist Lynn Taitt, ushered in the rock steady era.

These two essential albums showcase a stunning selection of well-known hits, and not so well-known rarities, from the vast Federal catalog. All tracks have been transferred direct from the master tapes and assembled with the invaluable assistance of Ken Khouri's son, Paul Khouri, who generously gave Dub Store unlimited access to the Federal tape vaults. The extensive liner notes feature extracts from extensive interviews with Paul Khouri whose knowledgeable recollections of working on Marcus Garvey Drive, not only as a producer but as an engineer and musician, are illuminating and educational. Both sets present an insight into the birth and growth of Federal Records and the Jamaican recording industry and are essential to an understanding of the real roots of reggae music.

    Some Girls

Ranked 269/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Stones' Classic Remastered on 180 gram LP

Universal Music Group and The Rolling Stones present the remastered version of their groundbreaking 1978 album, Some Girls, which introduced the band to a whole new generation of fans. Justly considered one of the finest works by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood, Some Girls topped the US charts over three decades ago and remains the best selling album of their storied career.

Some Girls is the Rolling Stones' most direct and diverse collection of material from Mick Jagger's irresistible falsetto on the four-on-the-floor filler Miss You, their eighth U.S. #1, to the country-flavored Far Away Eyes via the Chuck Berry meets punk snarl of Respectable. And let's not forget the sensuous, Beast of Burden, one of Keith Richards' finest tunes, which reached #8 on the U.S. singles chart, the garage rocker Shattered, the albums' third U.S. Top 40 entry, and the soulful swagger of the group's version of The Temptations' Just My Imagination, another timeless offering in their canon of classic Stones Motown covers.

Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group.

Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features the Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he still performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 1970's funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrong footed many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to 'go disco'.

The 1978 album also courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furor around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag, a nod in the direction of the picture on the 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.

Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, with Richards since described as a sense of renewal. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to 'elevate' the sound.

The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When the Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman.

Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones album since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica player Sugar Blue (discovered busking on the Paris metro), made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.

Thirty-three years on from its original release, the re-mastered vinyl edition of Some Girls shows exactly why the 1978 album has often been hailed as the equal of Exile On Main Street. The album stands as both a time capsule and a timeless listen and it features the band at their tightest and toughest, at their most vibrant and vital.

    Politico

Nacional Records is excited to announce the vinyl release of Mexican Institute of Sound's (M.I.S.) critically acclaimed,
DJ-favorite albums 'Politico,' 'Pinata,' 'Mejico Maxico and 'Soy Sauce.'

Politico, the fifth full-length album by Mexican Institute of Sound (producer and songwriter Camilo Lara) is an album that almost wasn't. In 2011, an enormous amount of the explosive C4 was discovered next door to Lara's residence -- it was set to be detonated; by whom and for what purpose was never determined. In a recent interview, Lara said that he didn't deliberately set out to go into politics, but that politics had come to his house. These 13 songs, composed and assembled by Lara, address the chaos, destruction, tragedy, and violence that have become all-too-familiar elements in Mexican lives. Politico is a statement in the same way that the Clash's Sandinista! or the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks were, but it isn't nostalgic. Nor is it sonically similar to either. Longtime fans of MIS may have some initial issues because there are vocals on almost every tune. But not only do they not they detract from the set's appeal, their urgent expressions add to it. While the topical nature of these songs is undeniable, it doesn't mean this isn't a fun record. Quite the opposite. Lara isn't didactic in his lyrics; these are personal observations, and in that way, carry more weight than slogans. His unique compositional style makes them musically irresistible, and compelling. He uses Mexico's and Latin America's folk forms -- cumbias, descargas, sons, corridos, mariachis, bandas, rancheras, cha-chas, rhumbas, pachangas, and more -- and hard welds them to slamming beats, layered melodies, and infectious keyboard grooves, all via a staggering yet organic-sounding mÉlange of samples from rock & roll, hip-hop, funk, house, disco, techno, etc. Check the wild marimba samples that introduce the melody to Tipo Raro, which originally appeared in the film Made in Mexico. Lara retains the melody throughout, but busts it from its context; he runs head-on into multi-tracked Farfisa organs, a deeply distressed beat, four-on-the-floor loops, rapping, and a brittle bassline that fires directly from the center. Especulando is a driving, funky electro jam. Es-Toy uses accordion and darkly tinged double trombones (à la Willie Colón), a pulsing organ, and chanted vocals. Despite its skittering dance beat and its mariachi horns, Más is pure, frenetic punk rock. Politico is easily the most sophisticated record in the MIS catalog. This is political music without apology; it's also frenzied dance party music that's virtually peerless. - Thom Jurek (All Music Guide)

M.I.S. tours the world performing at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, with a wide range of
high-profile television and videogame uses, including HBO 'Entourage' & 'East Bound & Down,' as well as
'Californication' and videogames like EA Sports' 'FIFA' and the new 'Grand Theft Auto V', for which he curated
one of the radio stations 'East Los FM.'

The sound of old Mexican cumbias, boleros and mariachi tunes scrambled with samples, effects and beats.
    - NEW YORK TIMES

Camilo Lara works the electro-dance scene like the James Murphy [LCD Soundsystem] of Latin America.
Think Hot Chip visiting the Buena Vista Social Club; think traditional samples with bells and beats; think a

Zane Reynolds (SFV Acid) hails from Reseda, CA, straight up through the dense smog and the rolling hills from the city of Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley. Zane has been making music alone, DJing, performing and experimenting since 2007. His music is much like the city he comes from, grid locked but open, raw, real and depending on which direction you are looking, a different visceral experience. Since his first vinyl release to the world, New West Coast via PPM in March of 2011, his creative MPC, 303, 808 skills have been shown and grown to everyone that listens up (and you will wish you had). Making waves with his approach and attitude, unmatched, minimal, abstract acid-house and always truly exceptional songs, it's time to know where SFV Acid comes from.

SFV Acid's #2 sneaks in your head from the archives, deep, sought after and rare. While attending his last year of high school at Highland Hall High (Northridge, CA), Zane self released a handful of hand painted and hand drawn cassettes to his friends, he also left copies in random places throughout the San Fernando Valley including: Goodwill, Pierce Community College, In and Out Burger and Starbucks (what lucky fools). #2 was dug up and pressed onto virgin vinyl by PPM for all of our listening pleasure. This record stands tall amongst his releases thus far, a gem, a gritty ass shaking dirty drive into the So Cal sunset. A look at where Zane Reynolds started, so fresh and relevant, it's real, it's SFV Acid.

Modes and Blues: 8th February 1964

    Live At Ronnie Scott's

This is a previously unreleased mono recording of Modes and Blues from the Tubby Hayes Quintet's weekly Ronnie Scott's residency on 8th February 1964. Regarded as one of the masterworks of British modern jazz, Modes and Blues shows the Quintet at the very height of its powers, channelling the new musical flavours and inspiration that Tubby Hayes had absorbed from the cutting edge of jazz and the new directions of John Coltrane.

Recorded with Hayes' approval by Les Tomkins on his Ferrograph tape recorder, this is one of the most engrossing of all his stretch-out epics. Hayes digs in deep with marathon and breathtaking soloing, trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar delivers his characteristically lyrical improvisation, and there's dynamic interplay and drive from the great Terry Shannon, Freddy Logan and Allan Ganley rhythm section.

The Quintet had barely a few months left to run at the time of this performance, splitting in August 1964, fearing its music had atrophied into self-parody. Modes and Blues is among its many triumphs, a performance that shows how high the band had set the aspirational bar for British modernism, and, as such, is as much a cultural document as a musical souvenir.

    American Band

    LP Includes Bonus 7-Inch Single

Drive-By Truckers have always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. Founded in 1996 by singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, the band have long held a progressive fire in their belly but with AMERICAN BAND, they have made the most explicitly political album in their extraordinary canon. A powerful and legitimately provocative work, hard edged and finely honed, the album is the sound of a truly American Band - a Southern American band - speaking on matters that matter. DBT made the choice to direct the Way We Live Now head on, employing realism rather than subtext or symbolism to purge its makers' own anger, discontent, and frustration with societal disintegration and the urban/rural divide that has partitioned the country for close to a half-century.

AMERICAN BAND's considerable force can in part be credited to the sheer musical strength of the current Drive-By Truckers line-up, with Hood and Cooley joined by bassist Matt Patton, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Jay Gonzalez, and drummer Brad Morgan - together, the longest-lasting iteration in the band's two-decade history. AMERICAN BAND follows ENGLISH OCEANS and 2015's IT'S GREAT TO BE ALIVE!, marking the first time DBT have made three consecutive LPs with the same hard-traveling crew.

Angling for an affordable yet world-class vacuum tube phono stage? The hunt is over! The spawn of the Manley Steelhead - one of the world's greatest phono preamplifiers - Stereophile Class A Recommended Component and The Absolute Sound's Preamp of the Year, has arrived. The Chinook epitomizes the sound of the Steelhead. Designed for the music lover, not the switch tweaker.

Like the Steelhead, each channel employs the two triode sections of a 6922 for amplifying duties with highly accurate passive RIAA equalization networks. In the Chinook, the signal is then directly coupled to another 6922 dual triode serving as the output driver in a White Follower configuration. This output stage circuit is our favorite because of its super-low output impedance and beefy current-driving capabilities. It can drive long cable lengths and difficult loads, tube or solid-state. Bring it on. No wimpy cathode followers here!

Setting up the Chinook couldn't be easier. There are two internal settings for optimal gain: 45dB for Moving-Magnet cartridges and 60dB for Moving-Coil cartridges. Set it and forget it! The back panel contains DIP switches for adjusting the input resistive and capacitance loading values. 31 possible options between 26 and 800 Ohms plus 47k Ohms and 7 capacitive loading choices between 50 pF and 350 pF provide flexibility to match any cartridge and fine tune the tone. Audiophile-grade and time-proven componentry is used throughout, embodying Manley's dedication to seductive sonics, combined with the reliability that professionals around the world depend on. At just about a quarter of the price of our revered Steelhead preamplifier, the Chinook's focus is on elegance of design, careful execution, efficient construction, and appreciable quality.

Designed and built in California, the Chinook exemplifies Manley's commitment to our local community and to a simple, clean, and quiet signal path. The Chinook demonstrates the supreme linearity of vacuum tubes while providing the flexibility needed to embrace any turntable setup. Everything from the most exotic 180 gram audiophile pressing to 25 cent thrift-store classics will be reproduced accurately and musically.
