    She Has No Strings Apollo

With each member of the band living on a different continent it took more than just a phone call to instigate a rehearsal. In February of 2002 (their 10th anniversary as a musical group), The Dirty Three reunited in Melbourne, Australia to demo some ideas they had been working on individually. They wound up with 20 songs, picked their favorites of the batch, and hit the road for two months to tour the new material. Along the way they met Fabrice Laureau, who among other things recorded part of the hit soundtrack to the film Amelie. He offered to record the band at a studio outside Paris, and thus was born She Has No Strings Apollo, the Dirty Three's sixth proper studio album.

Originally released in 2003, She Has No Strings Apollo is marked by the band's signature sounds crashing together with remarkable power, fury, and beauty. Subtle touches of piano and the addition of bass guitar (a first for the band) work beautifully behind the shimmering melodies created by Warren Ellis' soaring violin, Mick Turner's ethereal guitar, and Jim White's tidal drumming. The Dirty Three makes that rare brand of music that is raw and pure and expressive and untainted by artifice.

    Dirty Water

The Standells' key albums for the Tower label (Dirty Water, Why Pick On Me, and Try It) perfectly bottled a rebellious wave of sound sweeping across Mid-1960's teen clubs, radio playlists and record racks. Starting with the genre-defining, proto-punk smash "Dirty Water", through a series of equally memorable underdog anthems ("Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick on Me") and obscenities (the banned "Try It"), the Standells left an indelible mark on their era. Those three Tower albums are a veritable feast of three chord, fuzz-drenched, Vox Organ-driven "squares"-repellant.

The Standells' Dirty Water album, their first for Tower Records, was primarily recorded away from their Hollywood home base. Producer Ed Cobb picked a Seattle studio and engineer Kearney Barton (the Sonics), unwittingly unleashing the savage Pacific Northwest Sound on the rest of the country. As Standells founding member Larry Tamblyn tells it, "It really was the Standells raw." The results include crushing classics like "Little Sally Tease," "Medication," and "Why Did You Hurt Me."

    Moon Pix

Cat Power's stirring 1998 album Moon Pix, her fourth overall, continued Chan Marshall's evolution from indie-rock queen to reflective, accomplished songstress. The addition of The Dirty Three's Mick Turner and Jim White here also adds new depth to the proceedings as they gracefully complement Marshall's compelling, intricate guitar lines and gently insistent vocals to fine effect. Moon Pix is a soulful collection of songs that begins to truly uncover the raw power and emotional vulnerability that would inform Marshall's work from here on out. Unlike past recordings where the band tried to capture their live potential, this time they thought about how they might perform the songs later. As such, the tracks on Cinder are much shorter, trimmed down, and classic in composition. In a world of trendy popsters, the King of Rock Royalty emerges solo with a new masterpiece. Scoop 3 is a continuation of Townshend's infamous Scoop projects, proving that carefully orchestrated lullabys, such as I Think I Like It the Way It Is, can co-exist with the cutting, raw power of bedroom style recording in Dirty Water. Townshend miraculously brings to life a notebook of his art in a fashion that may seem a bit unorthodox to some, but fully realized to devoted music lovers of all ages.

This three LP set offers many moods to travel through, only to realize that Townshend is still a sure bet when it comes to pleasure, beauty, and intensity.

    Give It Time

Three years have passed since the Revellions released their last single and it's been five years since their eponymous debut album on Dirty Water Records. This will be the one album this year for which anticipation is high. This is the one the fans have been waiting for. The album contains contributions from members old and new and spans a riotous five years, much of which was spent touring around Europe with recording sessions in Dublin fitted in when they were able to drag themselves out of the pub. Despite the time lapse and line up changes, this is no difficult second album. It's a coherent collection of tracks that truly represents the band at this time. This is a band becoming tighter than ever with new songs to not just rival but surpass those on the debut.

    Lamp Lit Prose (Pre-Order)

    Release Date: July 13, 2018*

'Lamp Lit Prose' arrives just over a year after 2017's self-titled 'Dirty Projectors.' Here David Longstreth's band returns with a new album that is the yang to the yin of the 2017 effort. The songs signal a page turned for Longstreth: hope instead of heartbreak, a restorative balance. Guitars have returned to the Dirty Projectors' world, intricate and gorgeous vocal harmony too. The album begins with "Right Now," David singing, "there was silence in my heart, but now I'm striking up the band." In addition to the core musicians and guests, LA string group the Calder Quartet, and The Brass Players of Los Angeles both appear on several songs. 'Lamp Lit Prose' is a recommitment to the sounds and ideals of Dirty Projectors, embracing the band's trademarks while pushing forward the sonic envelope.

Lamp Lit Prose will be the ninth release for Dirty Projectors and comes with collaborations from HAIM, Syd, Robin Pecknold, Rostam Batmanglij, Amber Mark, Empress Of and Dear Nora. Lamp Lit Prose was recorded at Ivo Shandor in Los Angeles.

    No More Shall We Part

No More Shall We Part ends a four-year silence from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. A best-of was issued in 2000, but no new material has appeared since 1997's landmark album, The Boatman's Call. With that record Cave had finally delivered what everyone knew he was capable of: an entire album of deeply tragic and beautiful love songs without irony, sarcasm, or violent resolution. It appears that The Boatman's Call has altered the manner in which Cave writes songs, and the Bad Seeds illustrate them. Two musical directors -- the ubiquitous Mick Harvey and Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis -- craft a sonic atmosphere whose textures deepen and widen Cave's most profound and beautiful lyrics to date. The ballads have the wide, spacious, sobering ambience one has come to expect from the Bad Seeds. There is an ethereal change in sound in the up-tempo numbers, which are, for lack of better terminology, musical novellas. They plumb the depths of blues, yet contain glissando and crescendos from the orchestral music of composers such as Fartein Valen and Olivier Messiaen. There are places, such as in Oh My Lord, where rock & roll is evoked as a device, but this isn't rock music. A listen to As I Sat Sadly By Her Side, Hallelujah, and the aforementioned track (the most rock song here) will attest that it is merely one color on a musical palette that is more expansive now than at any time in the band's history. Also in the band's musical treasure trove is the addition of the McGarrigle sisters on backing vocals - nowhere is their contribution more poignant than on the tenderly daunting, haunted house that is Love Letter. Lyrically, and as a vocalist, Cave has undergone a startling, profound metamorphosis. Gone is the angry, humorous cynic whose venom and bile touched even his lighter moments. His deep taunting ambivalence about Jesus Christ and Christianity in general is gone, vanished into a maturity that ponders spiritual things contemplatively. Humor that pokes fun churchianity remains, but not as a source of its inspiration. Over these 12 tracks, Cave has taken the broken heart--so openly exhibited on The Boatman's Call--and elevated it to the place where he has learned to live with, and speak from it as both an artist and a human being. Leonard Cohen stated in the song Anthem, that, there is a crack in everything/that's where the light gets in.No More Shall We Part is a mosaic of those cracks. If this album is about anything, it is about love's ability to survive in the world. It is examined concretely and abstractly; to the point where it meditates on this theme even cinematically. His methodology for the listener is, even though these are intimate conversations, the effect is illustrated in widescreen. In this way, Cave touches the heart in the same way Andrei Tarkovsky's films Stalker and The Sacrifice and Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire do. There is powerful emotion here, spiritual, psychological and romantic, without a hint of the sentimentality that would make it false. As both a singer and a songwriter, his work has been transformed into something so full of depth, color, and dimension, that there is simply no one except his mentors working on this level in popular music. In the opening moments of As I Sat Sadly By Her Side, a tenderly, softly sung vocal delivers: Then she drew the curtains down/And said when will you ever learn/That what happens there beyond the glass/Is simply none of your concern/God has given you but one heart/You are not a home but the hearts of your brothers/God don't care for your benevolence anymore/But he cares for the lack of it in others/Nor does he care for you to sit at/Windows in judgement of the world he created/While sorrows pile up around you/Ugly, useless and over-inflated/At which she turned her head away/Great tears leapin' from her eyes/I could not wipe a smile from my face/As I sat sadly by her side. The title track is a ballad that could have been lifted from The Boatman's Call, except it lacks the reaching tragedy. And Cave sings in a tenor no one thought him capable of -- And all the birds will sing to your beautiful heart/Up on the bell/And no more shall we part. The chaos of earlier Bad Seeds outings does kick up on The Sorrowful Wife, where violins and Blixa Bargeld's guitars duel with Jim Sclavunos's drums for domination of the sonic torrent. The record closes with two of Cave's most beautiful songs, a near country gospel waltz called Gates to the Garden with the McGarrigles sweetening an already lovely tome to redemptive love. Finally, Darker With the Day, illustrated by Harvey's striking pianistic ballad framework touched by Bill Evans' technique, is as strikingly autobiographical as Cave has ever been, highlighting the extremes of good and evils that inform and torment the protagonist's inner emotional life within in a single day. There is loss and the seeking of deliverance and, in a statement not so much of recognition that this is simply fate, he also acknowledges hope: All these streets are frozen now/I come and go/Full of a longing for something I do not know. As he calls to a lover gone seemingly forever, he comes to the conclusion that for him, redemption is in love itself, whether divine or profane; the only hope is that love, between two people or between an individual and her or his creator, depends on one's openness to receiving it. Who can argue with him? No More Shall We Part leaves listeners in awe, full of complex emotions, and pondering the notion that they've been in the presence of great redemptive art--which Henry James calls, the thing that can never be repeated.

    Rise Above

The breadth of David Longstreth's talents as a songwriter, arranger, bandleader and singer call to mind Prince, Joni Mitchell, and Bjork. His constantly evolving sound, the sheer intensity of the music, and the originality of his voice set him apart. From beginning to end, Rise Above is a re-imagining of Black Flag's seminal 1981 record Damaged. It's not a covers record; Longstreth attempted to rewrite his favorite adolescent album word for word, from memory. The result resounds with a kind of elegant simplicity: beautiful interlocking guitar parts, gorgeous three-part vocal harmonies, and some great songwriting.

The fiendishly fun Cramps have been creating their own style of dirty Garage Rock 'N' Roll for 30 years and they show no sign of letting up. Although not the most prolific band on the planet, they certainly cram plenty of meat onto each of their silver platters when they do get around to releasing them. Look Mom, No Head!, originally released in 1991, is no exception. It's raw and it's dirty! It growls and snarls! It kicks and screams! Yes, it's The Cramps doing what they do best. Chulahoma

Chulahoma is a stopgap EP from the Black Keys, a collection of six covers of songs by cult bluesman Junior Kimbrough, whose 'Do the Rump' they covered on their 2002 debut, Big Come Up. Considering that this is the first time the blues-rock guitar-n-drums duo has devoted an album to nothing but straight-ahead blues songs, it wound seem logical that Chulahoma would be the bluesiest recording in their catalog, but the Black Keys aren't that simple. The six songs on this 28-minute EP are hardly replications of Kimbrough's gritty originals, nor do they have the dirty, punch-to-the-gut feel of any of the duo's three proper albums. Instead, this is the weirdest set of music the band has done to date, a trippy, murky excursion into territory that floats somewhere between the primal urgency of the duo's best work and the dark, moody psychedelia of late-'60s blues-rock. Take 'Have Mercy on Me' its winding, narcotic blues groove settles into a bed of droning organ and bongos, but the interplay between guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney prevents it from sounding as affected as psychedelia, while infusing it with a real sense of danger. That unsettling undercurrent flows throughout this brief EP, and it makes Chulahoma an album that's ideal for pitch-black nights, where the music can worm its way into your imagination and then run wild. That alone would make it a unique, noteworthy detour for the Black Keys, but when this is compared to Kimbrough's original recordings, it becomes an instructive listen since a side-by-side listen reveals how Auerbach drew inspiration from Kimbrough's stripped-down, idiosyncratic grooves and took it into some place entirely different. And while that might mean that Chulahoma doesn't necessarily sound like a kissing cousin to Kimbrough's originals, it does make it a greater, richer tribute than most cover albums, and it certainly proves that Auerbach's testimonial in the liner notes about how Junior Kimbrough changed his life is no lie.

    Root Down: Live

Root Down captures the king of the Hammond B3 organ, Jimmy Smith, playing down and dirty R&B. The album
includes two versions (one previously unissued) of Smith's Root Down, a song covered by the Beastie Boys in
1994. There is also a hypnotic reading of Al Green's pleading Let's Stay Together, which yet again proves that
Jimmy Smith is a man with a lot of soul. On 180 gram vinyl.

The White Stripes White Blood Cells on 180g LP

Mastered from the Original Analog Source by George Ingram with Input from Third Man Records

The White Stripes, songwriter Jack White (vocals/guitar/piano/bass) and Meg White (drums/vocals) formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit independent music underground, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the garage rock revival scene.

Their use of analog and low-fidelity equipment in the recording process partnered with a DIY approach created a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement and performance that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

The White Stripes 2001 album White Blood Cells served as the band's commercial breakthrough, going gold and yielding the Top 20 modern rock hits Fell In Love With A Girl and Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground.

    For My Parents

Mono, the Japanese instrumental rock quartet, who have been called one of the most distinctive bands of the 21st century by Pitchfork, present their new Temporary Residence album For My Parents. There is no doubting a Mono song when you hear it; cinemascopic song structures, engrossing lyrical melodies, sublimely transcendent execution; and no denying their uncanny ability to feel perfectly at home in both pristine symphony halls and dirty rock clubs. For My Parents obliterates that divide, showcasing a sensitivity and maturity that simultaneously acknowledges where they came from and where they're going.

For the new album the band worked with legendary New York producer Henry Hirsch, recording in a converted cathedral overlooking the Hudson River, and mixing with longtime friend Fred Weaver in rural Pennsylvania. Embracing their evolution as a preeminent neoclassical noise juggernaut, Mono once again enlisted the Wordless Music Orchestra, who had previously accompanied the band in NYC during their worldwide series of orchestral concerts.

Coming more than three years after the highly regarded Hymn To The Immortal Wind, For My Parents represents the longest span of time between Mono albums, resulting in sharper songwriting, subtler dynamics, stunning production, and the most thoughtfully developed arrangements of their career. The unique combination of soul-stirring melodies, cinematic East-meets-West arrangements, and firm command of elusive emotional intangibles is what makes Mono so Mono.

    Satan's Graffiti Or God's Art?

Atlanta's valiant punks Black Lips have announced that their first album in three years,Satan's graffiti or God's art?, is set for release May 5 on Vice Records. Produced bySean Lennon at his studio compound in upstate New York throughout 2016, the album isthe group's most musically evolved to date, while still staying true to their original blisteringtake on fuzzy, dirty rock n' roll.

During the recording, the band isolated themselves from the outside world, infusing thealbum with a focused liveliness similar to the spirit that brought them together in the firstplace. On Satan's graffiti or God's art? founding members Cole Alexander and JaredSwilley teamed with former guitarist Jack Hines (who played in the group from 2002-2004)and recent additions Oakley Munson on drums and Zumi Rosow on saxophone. The albumalso features contributions by Saul Adamczewski of Fat White Familyand guest vocals by Yoko Ono.

Satan's graffiti or God's art? vindicates Black Lips for sticking it out through many years ofshifting trends and buzz bands; a sonically captivating document that is as creativelyunhinged as it is precisely executed, one of the rawest and most expansive albums in theband's storied history.
