Mighty Real: Greatest Dance HitsTwenty-five years after his untimely death at the age of 41, the iconic legacy of Sylvester, the "Queen of Disco," will be resurrected with "Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits," due out June 25 (international release dates vary) on Fantasy Records.
This collection will celebrate the life and music of the artist who once danced his way into the hearts and minds of the disco and LGBT communities.
A quarter of a century after his passing, Sylvester will make a fabulous debut back into a prolific time in the LGBT community just the way he would have liked it - through dance music. This 11-track release, available on CD and on double pink vinyl, will feature a number of original album tracks and 12" mixes that are rare or no longer available on CD, as well as the brand new remix of the iconic "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" by Grammy-nominated remixer and DJ, Ralphi Rosario (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Madonna).
As a dear friend of Harvey Milk and an icon to the LGBT community, Sylvester has long held a special place in music and socio-political history. Sylvester was not only one of the first disco stars to stand openly gay, but bravely crossed beyond the boundaries of race, gender and sexuality to become a proud figure of the gay liberation movement.
"Sylvester James was an unlikely star: an androgynous, cross-dressing, openly gay, African-American, falsetto-singing, unapologetically flaming man-diva influenced primarily by church women, black blues singers, drag queens, hippies and homos," liner notes writer Joshua Gamson said. "Like very few before him, and quite a few after, Sylvester rode his marginality right into the mainstream."
A Los Angeles local, Sylvester found his home in the vibrant subcultural scenes of San Francisco in the late 1960s. As the community around him became devastated with AIDS, Sylvester's music took on a sort of weary determination, becoming a call to live, to keep dancing and to keep loving.
Sylvester died on Dec. 16, 1988 and bequeathed royalties from the sale of his music to benefit two charitable organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area: the AIDS Emergency Fund and Project Open Hand.
"Decades later, even as strides have been made in the fight against the disease that has taken so many lives, Sylvester's music lives on, a call to be fabulous against the odds," Gamson said.
"Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits" was produced by Tom Cartwright and Chris Clough on Fantasy Records with liner notes written by Gamson, author of "The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, The Music, The Seventies in San Francisco."

American Hustle SoundtrackLike Goodfellas and Boogie Nights before it, American Hustle's music celebrates the epic feel of '70s pop, rock, and disco and uses it to give its story extra heft. David O. Russell's tale of con men, Feds, and the mob has a lighter touch than either of those two movies, however, and this is reflected in the soundtrack's song choices. More than a few of these tracks are by Electric Light Orchestra as well as Jeff Lynne on his own, and the whimsical yet driving sound of 10538 Orchestra, Long Black Road, and Stream of Stars lends a tongue-in-cheek tone supported by Tom Jones' Delilah and Chris Stills' Live to Live. The album touches on some of the decade's definitive songs (Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Wings' Live and Let Die, Donna Summer's I Feel Love) but never sounds like a prepackaged hits-of-the-'70s collection, due in large part to unique choices like Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' gritty version of Don't Leave Me This Way and Mayssa Karaa's otherworldly Arabic interpretation of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit, which is so striking that it's one of the finest songs on an album packed with big names. A nuanced and playful soundtrack, American Hustle works well as a companion piece to the movie that spawned it and on its own.

Saturday Night FeverNo popular music act of the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s attracted a more varied audience than the Bee Gees. Beginning in the mid- to late '60s as a Beatlesque ensemble, they quickly developed as songwriters and singers to create a style of their own that carried them from psychedelia to progressive pop. Then, after hitting a popular trough, they reinvented themselves as perhaps the most successful white soul act of all time. What remained a constant throughout their history is their extraordinary singing, rooted in three voices that were appealing individually and melded together perfectly.
The Bee Gees were a pop music group that was founded in 1958. The group's line-up consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were successful for most of their decades of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a rock act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies; Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the late 1970s and 1980s. They wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists.1. Stayin' Alive performed by The Bee Gees

MadonnaMadonna's 1983 self-titled debut, produced by Reggie Lucas, collected some of her early 12 dance club hits (Everybody, Burning Up, Physical Attraction) along with the soon-to-be smashes Borderline, Holiday and Lucky Star. Everybody was her first single out of the gate, hitting Billboard's Disco chart in late 1982. The track, produced by Mark Kamins, topped out at #3. The double-sided 12 Burning Up/Physical Attraction followed, and also climbed to #3.
Finally, in 1983, Holiday burst onto pop radio, and the single became her first top 40 hit, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by Borderline (#10) and Lucky Star (#4). The album climbed to #8 on The Billboard 200, spending a whopping 168 weeks on the chart. Over the past years, Calvin Harris has had number 1 hit after number 1 hit with his EDM-style songs (most recently with Summer) and collaborations with the likes of Rihanna, Kelis, Dizzy Rascal, Florence Welch, Example, Ellie Goulding.
His debut album I Created Disco (2007) is much more funky and not so much EDM, but contained a handful of chartbusters as well. Acceptable In The 80s, Colours, Vegas, The Girls and Merrymaking At My Place were very successful in the European charts. Greatest Hit SinglesBest known for his classic Shaft soundtrack and role on South Park, Isaac Hayes has one of the deepest and impressive discographies in modern music. This singles collection focuses on his heyday, kicking off with Hot Buttered Soul-era tracks such as Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.
One of the best-available Isaac Hayes compilation, Greatest Hit Singles bypasses a couple of his later disco hits, but the result is a more unified sound that helps illustrate why Hayes was so important to the development of '70s soul...for a more concentrated dose of Hayes at his best, Greatest Hit Singles is hard to beat. - Steve Huey, allmusic.com1. Top Ten Hits Of The End Of The WorldIt's 2012, and Prince Rama has made the Top Ten Hits of the End of the World. Conceived as a pseudo-compilation album, the Brooklyn duo invented ten different pop bands that died during the apocalypse, channeling the ghosts of each one to perform the various songs. Spanning genres and stylistic eras from across the globe, Top Ten Hits explores pop music's relationship to memory, nostalgia, and the spirit world.
Incorporating influences as disparate as cosmic disco, motorcycle rock, new-wave, grunge, tribal goth, Arabic pop, and ghost-modern glam, Prince Rama filters each sound through the destroyed lens of a post-apocalyptic future looking back at the wonders of its sonic past. Tracking began with Tim Koh in Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's studio and was then completed and mixed with producer Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Sun City Girls, Arcade Fire) at Gravelvoice in Seattle.
Top Ten Hits of the End of the World isn't just a pop album, it's a retrospective requiem of all pop albums ever made. Nothing like this has ever been attempted by a single band, and its residual echoes will continue to haunt this world and the next. LP comes with digital download card.1. Blade Of Austerity

James Walter Jimmy Castor was an American pop and funk musician. He is best known as a fun energetic disco, funk saxophonist, with his biggest hit singles Troglodyte (Cave Man) and It's Just Begun.
Originally released in 1972, It's Just Begun set the tone for The Jimmy Castor Bunch's success through an effective and distinctive mix of funk, pop hooks, social commentary, and gonzo comedy. The album also helped the group score a million-selling crossover hit single with Troglodyte. In the United States the track peaked at #6 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was a million seller by June 1972 and received a gold disc award from the RIAA.
Recently the hit It's Just Begun was featured in the HBO® television series Vinyl. It has also been sampled by bands and solo artists throughout history. But Troglodyte (Cave Man) was the most extensively used track, mainly due to it spoken word intro What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time . It has been heavily sampled (over 85 times!) in hip-hop music and dance/pop music by a diverse group of artists from N.W.A. for Gangsta Gangsta to Back In The Day by Christina Aguilera.

Disco was at the height of its popularity in 1979, when Earth, Wind & Fire responded with its most disco-influenced single ever, the glossy and infectious Boogie Wonderland. Up to that point, EWF had pretty much ignored disco, and when the band finally acknowledged the style, the soulsters weren't about to inundate listeners with it. Boogie Wonderland (which features the Emotions, a female group for whom Maurice White had been producing major hits) isn't representative of I Am on the whole. The Fat BoysBecause of their comic image, some hip-hoppers dismissed the Fat Boys as a novelty act -- some, but not many. The fact is that they were among the best and most popular rappers of the mid-1980s. Along with Run-D.M.C., L.L. Cool J, and Whodini, the Fat Boys were the finest that hip-hop's Second Generation (as it was called) had to offer. After making some noise as the Disco Three, the rotund Brooklynites changed their name to the Fat Boys in 1984 and hit big with this excellent debut album, which is humorous, wildly entertaining, and unapologetically funky.1. Spoon's most straight-up, direct and concise rock album ever;
A certain "return to form" as a straight up American rock band, a restoration of Spoon's trademark authority, confidence and swagger;

pensive album standout "Inside Out".
After 6 years of incessant recording and touring, band took a 4.5 year break between albums. Spoon returns more invigorated and energized than at any
point in their career;
Core audience will love the return to Spoon-y form via future greatest hits like Do You, Let Me Be Mine and They Want My Soul;

Sheik YerboutiIn order to finance his artier excursions, which increasingly required more expensive technology, Frank Zappa recorded several collections of guitar- and song-oriented material in the late '70s and early '80s, which generally concentrated on the bawdy lyrical themes many fans had come to expect and enjoy in concert. Sheik Yerbouti was one of the first and most successful of these albums, garnering attention for such tracks as the Grammy-nominated disco satire Dancin' Fool, the controversial Jewish Princess, and the equally controversial Bobby Brown Goes Down, a song about gay S&M that became a substantial hit in European clubs.
While Zappa's attitude on the latter two tracks was even more politically incorrect than usual for him, it didn't stop the album from becoming his second-highest charting ever. Social satire, leering sexual preoccupations, and tight, melodic songs dominated the rest of the record as well, as Zappa stuck to what had been commercially successful for him in the past.1. Thinking In Textures2012 was an incredible year for singer/songwriter Chet Faker aka Nick Murphy. In March he played stand-out performances at SXSW, including a performance at the Filter Magazine party and was touted as a 'must see' act by The Austin Chronicle.
All of this momentum led to a record deal with Downtown Records who are set to drop his debut release Thinking In Textures. The 7-song set's first single Terms and Conditions is a gorgeously penned track that has been garnering airplay across the globe.
Hailing from Melbourne's tight-knit disco and house music scene and taking elements from his acoustic past, Chet Faker has carved out a unique style that fuses personal stories of love and loss with an electronica soul that reaches far beyond his homeland.
Shrouded in secrecy, hidden behind an alias and disguised by a beard, Chet Faker enjoys mystery. He came to everyone's attention when his cover of Blackstreet's classic No Diggity hit #1 on Hype Machine. But far from rushing into the limelight, Chet built on the popularity of No Diggity through a series of tracks released online, creating an insatiable hunger from fans for more from this part jazz, part soul and part electronic artist.1. Straight From The HeartAnn Peebles' climb up the career ladder was rather more conventional than spectacular in the tough, rough days of rhythm and blues. She was first discovered when she appeared in Memphis nightclubs, was given a break by the big-band leader Gene 'Bowlegs' Miller, and landed her first top hit with the celebrated song I Can't Stand The Rain.
Towards the end of the Seventies she made a well-timed retreat just before the outbreak of the highly commercialised disco wave, only to return many years later with a revival of her old songs. Her album from 1972 has certainly not mellowed with age. Her singing is sharp and soulful, and comes right from the heart (Slipped, Tripped And Fell In Love). The beat is powerful, throbbing, young and fresh (What You Laid On Me) or surging and groovy (How Strong Is A Woman?). The arrangements come across as sophisticated and well balanced, yet do not baulk at harsh attacks from the winds nor from the use of Hammond and Hohner keyboards, which were so popular at that time. Melody, singers and big band are airy and finely interwoven (Somebody's On Your Case), while a fusion of soft swing and snappy acerbity (I Pity The Fool) rounds off this album which is filled with pure emotion, heart and soul.1. Synkronized is the fourth studio album released by funk/acid jazz band Jamiroquai, fronted by vocalist and key-member Jay Kay. Originally released in 1999, Synkronized is the band's follow-up to the successful album Traveling Without Moving. The album includes the singles Canned Heat (#1 on the US Dance Charts), Supersonic (#1 on the US Dance Charts and #22 on the UK singles chart), King for a Day, Black Capricorn Day, and Deeper Underground.
The single Deeper Underground originally appeared on the soundtrack to the 1998 film, Godzilla. The song became a hit in several countries and the group's first and only single to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart. The Music On Vinyl version has Deeper Underground added as a special vinyl bonus track which the original LP version from 1999 lacked.

Slaves To The GraveSlaves to the Grave is the last will and testament of the Dallas/Ft Worth band who influenced artists from Nine Inch Nails to Slipknot, and features members of GWAR, Ministry, Warbeast, Revolting Cocks and Lard. Fated for release, the recording sessions wrapped just days before the tragic loss of guitarist Mike Scaccia, who suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed while performing on stage. Rigor Mortis hit the national scene in 1987 as the first underground Heavy Metal band to sign to a major label. Their 1988 debut record, RIGOR MORTIS (Capitol), has since become legendary in the thrash/speed metal community, influencing bands like Toxic Holocaust and Goatwhore, and motivating Ministry to leave the disco for the Metal arena. Ministry would, in turn, influence everything from Nine Inch Nails to Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. The members would remain friends through thick and thin throughout the years, and in 2012 the pieces finally came together. Rigor Mortis entered the studio to record what was to be their comeback record. Older, wiser and good with their personal lives Rigor Mortis had finally come full circle. Then, on December 22nd, 2012, it all came to a halt. While playing their home town club in Ft. Worth in celebration of singer Bruce Corbitt's 50th birthday, midway through the set Mike Scaccia suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed on stage. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Rigor Mortis was over. Though never discussed, all knew there was no Rigor Mortis without Mike, but the album was recorded and almost finished. As fate would have it, just days before he died Mike went into the studio and put the finishing touches on all of his parts, effectively enabling the guys to finish the record, knowing that Scaccia was happy with it. They endeavored every step of the way to do justice to the Rigor Mortis legacy, and bring honor to Mike Scaccia's last recorded testament. We think he would be proud.Poltergeist

Brooklynite Elizabeth Harper's first musical offerings appeared in the form of personal singer/songwriter fare, her airy vocals paired only with quiet strums of acoustic guitar. But having a long-held desire to make electronic music, Harper recruited producers Mark Richardson and Scott Rosenthal to assist in achieving her desired sound, and electro-pop outfit Class Actress was born. The trio wasted no time in assembling their Journal of Ardency EP, which Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor released on his Terrible Records imprint in early 2010. The five songs circulated widely, garnering acclaim and comparisons to Human League, Depeche Mode, and early Madonna at each music journal stop.
Now settled in with the folks at Carpark, Harper and co. put forth their debut long-player, Rapprocher. The album sees her playing a similar part to Journal's playful lovelorn diva, but it pushes the EP's proto-electro revisionism into new directions. Tracks like Love Me Like You Used To and Hanging On swaddle the record's heavy disco beats in diaphanous sheets of delay, and the bouncing bass of Weekend make it a prime candidate for a feel-good summer hit. Harper remains the force that binds the songs into a cohesive statement, her winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion - backed mostly with electronics - summons thoughts of Yaz's Alison Moyet. In concurrence with the title (rapprocheris French for bring closer), the candid, sincere lyrics meld with the atmosphere, enveloping the listener into Class Actress's world of 21st century romanticism.1.
