    Cal Tjader's Latin Concert

As Cal Tjader's reputation and popularity grew as one of the major forces in Afro-Cuban jazz, he was able to hire some of the music's most able artists. On this 1958 album, recorded at San Francisco's famous Black Hawk, his band included percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, pianist Vince Guaraldi, and bassist Al McKibbon, a veteran of the Dizzy Gillespie band that opened American ears to the charms and urgencies of Afro-Cuban rhythms. Having Al in the band, Tjader once said, is an impossible dream come true. Among the pieces here are several by Tjader and one that was destined to become a classic in the literature of Latin jazz, Ray Bryant's Cubano Chant.

    Lullabies Of Birdland

Ella Fitzgerald is widely heralded for her clean phrasing, scat-singing and a confident sense of swing. Viewed as one of the world's most popular jazz singers, she performed alongside Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington. Her outstanding performances on record and live yielded both critical and popular success during her lifetime. Lullabies Of Birdland consists of recordings from 1945 to 1955. It offers a wonderful set of swing-era standards, impossible to listen to without imagining yourself sipping cognac in a smoky jazzclub on Broadway.

Concert of the Century - A Tribute to Charlie Parker

First Time Available On Wide Release Vinyl

    Pristinely Restored 1980 Live Recording

6 Of The Greatest Jazz Legends In Their Prime

180 Gram Audiophile 2LP Vinyl With Gatefold

On a cold November evening in 1980, 3000 jazz fans filled the Salle Wilfrid Pelletier Hall of Place des Arts
in Montreal, Quebec to attend what promised to be, a swinging evening featuring six of the biggest names
in bebop. Billed The Concert of the Century - A Tribute to Charlie Parker, and under the direction of
Dizzy Gillespie - one of the best jazz trumpeters of all time - the event featured legendary performers:
Hank Jones - piano, Ray Brown - bass, Milt Jackson - vibes, Philly Joe Jones - drums and James Moody
on tenor sax and flute. Local club owner Roue Doudou Boicel, who produced the concert, had the foresight
to record the concert in its entirety. A limited quantity bootleg LP of the concert soon appeared and then
disappeared from the marketplace, those tapes lay dormant for over 30 years.

This historic recording opens with rapturous applause that sets the tone with Dizzy's own "Blues 'N' Boogie.
"Also featured are several classic standards - some more well known then others - including "Darben The
Redd Foxx," "Time On My Hands," "Get Happy," "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Stardust." All the players are
at the top of their game and having a blast, as evidenced by the banter and repartee between songs.

Concert of the Century, pristinely restored and remastered, features two tracks that weren't on the original
pressing from the early '80s - Ralph Rainger's "If I Should Lose You" and an incredible eight minute bass
    solo by Ray Brown.

    Yesterdays

2001 was a vintage year for the Jarrett trio, as three outstanding live albums - "The Out-of-Towners", "Always Let Me Go" and "My Foolish Heart"- have already shown. "Yesterdays", registered at Tokyo's Metropolitan Festival Hall, is a fourth 2001 concert recording, with an all-standards programme and a strong emphasis on bebop, including Charlie Parker's "Scrapple from the Apple", "Shaw'nuff" by Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and Horace Silver's "Strollin'". There is also an exhilarating splash of ragtime in the shape of "You Took Advantage Of Me", and beautiful ballads including the title track and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (both from Jerome Kern's pen). As a bonus: the album concludes with a radiant "Stella by Starlight" captured at a soundcheck: Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette playing just for the joy of it...

    Musicians:

    Keith Jarrett - piano

    Gary Peacock - double-bass

    Outward Bound

Eric Dolphy has sometimes been described as an iconoclast, but in Outward Bound, he was not overturning his idol, Charlie Parker; he was building on Bird's legacy. So deep was Dolphy's musicianship, so free his imagination, that he enchanted trailblazers like John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Partnering in this collection with the brilliant trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and a stunning rhythm section, Dolphy is at a peak of energy and creativity on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. He and Hubbard work with empathy reminiscent of the young Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Roy Haynes were ideal accompanists and co-conspirators in this widely influential work.

    200-Gram LP

Mastered By Bernie Grundman From The Original Analog Tape

Housed In A Tip-On Gatefold Jacket (From Stoughton Printing) For The First Time!

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

Ellington Soars To Unmatched Artistic Heights Alongside Impressive Jazz Stars Including Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges And Jimmy Rushing!

The tremendously detailed audio effect achieved by Columbia's engineers is brought back to life on this 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions. You want Duke and his men at their best, this is it!

Duke Ellington called his music American Music rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as beyond category. He remains one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music and is widely considered as one of the 20th century's best known African American personalites. He received 13 Grammy Awards and was honored with the French Legion of Honor in 1973. Posthumous recognition of his work include a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board.

Dizzy's spectacular trumpet blooms here amidst the Ellingtonian aggregate. The sometimes tender, sometimes shouting blues style of Jimmy Rushing provides nice contrast in one of the most varied and satisfying Ellington recordings ever. Originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, Jazz Party In Stereo contains a formidable gallery of jazz stars including Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Rushing, Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, and more!

So what have we done to perfect this brilliant reissue? Mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tape, for starters. Naturally we turned to our own Quality Record Pressings for the finest 200-gram, dead-silent background pressing. Top it off with a Stoughton Printing gatefold tip-on jacket with beautiful full-size inner pictures and you've got an audiophile's dream. A can't miss for your collection!

This most unusual Duke Ellington record includes two selections featuring nine symphonic percussionists on timpani, vibes, marimbas, and xylophones. Dizzy Gillespie makes a historic appearance with Ellington's orchestra on 'U.M.M.G.' (a meeting that should have been repeated often but sadly never was), Jimmy Rushing (Count Basie's former vocalist) sings 'Hello Little Girl,' and both Johnny Hodges ('All of Me') and Paul Gonsalves ('Ready Go!') have chances to blow. - AllMusic

Part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.

All mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 200-gram LPs pressed at Acoustic Sounds' state-of-the-art pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom

Deep groove label pressings, tip-on jackets on thick cardboard stock

Benny Golson, who came to the attention of the jazz public with Tadd Dameron's band and Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra, was a member of the Jazztet - the group he had formed with Art Farmer - at the time of this recording. Farmer is not with him in this recording but another Jazztet-mate, trombonist Curtis Fuller, is. Although this session is not as structured as the three-horn efforts of the Jazztet, there is a balance between blowing and Golson's writing that makes for a felicitous blend, whether on Golson's own My Blues House, Gene Krupa's old burner, Drum/Boogie, or Jerome Kern's Yesterdays. And with Art Blakey on drums things cook when they have to, and simmer at the right moments. With Curtis Fuller, Ray Bryant, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey.

Part Of The Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

Clifford Brown emerged fully formed in 1953, a trumpeter gifted with an ebullient swing and technical skills that added polish and precision to fresh invention. Foregoing both the manic pyrotechnics of Dizzy Gillespie and the laconic introversion of Miles Davis, he also provided a stylistic model for jazz trumpeters that has never gone out of style. This album combines Brown's first two recording dates as leader, placing him in quintet and sextet settings with some of the core musicians of the New York bop scene. The first nine tracks have Brown in an inspired quintet, prodded by the twisting, off-kilter solos and comping of the brilliant and underrated pianist Elmo Hope and the sparkling complexity of drummer Philly Joe Jones. While altoist Lou Donaldson is deeply in the sway of Charlie Parker, Brown sets his own course, whether it's the boppish Cookin' or the standard You Go to My Head. The final nine tracks have Art Blakey's drums driving the sextet, while altoist Gigi Gryce's understated concentration acts as an effective foil to Brown's joyous, dancing lines. Taken at a medium up-tempo, Cherokee is one of Brown's most effective vehicles. The alternate takes from each session highlight Brown's spontaneous creativity, while Rudy Van Gelder's remastering adds fresh focus to both his gorgeous tone and the explosive drumming. --Stuart Broomer

Remastered And Reissued As Part Of The Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

In a word association game, the name "Hank Mobley" will often generate "Blue Note" and vice versa. While Mobley had a musical life beyond the Blue Note label including associations with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis (the 1961 Quintet), it is for his Blue Note recordings that he rightfully most remembered. Mobley led 25 albums for Blue Note and appeared on over 30 others as a sideman. His consistency resulted in all of those recordings being recommended to hard bop collectors.

Mobley's mastery of the style, his attractive tone, and his skill at writing songs that inspire memorable solos made him a perfect representative of the Blue Note sound. Even with his large number of great recordings, Workout is something special and a real standout. Joined by Grant Green, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, Mobley creates brilliant statements on four of his best originals (including the soulful "Uh Huh" and "Greasin' Easy"), "The Best Things In Life Are Free" and "Three Coins In A Fountain." The passion in Mobley's playing is exciting and will surprise many. He takes wild chances that challenge the other all-stars, and he plays with a constant stream of creative ideas. Even collectors who own a dozen other Hank Mobley albums will have to get this version of Workout which, with its superb remastering, has never sounded better.

    Interlude

Blue Note Records recording artist Jamie Cullum - the best-selling jazz artist in U.K. history - will release his new album INTERLUDE. The album includes 3 exclusive tracks that did not appear on the original U.K. edition. The album marks a shift to straight-ahead jazz and a return to interpretation from an artist who has made a habit of bending genres, writing original material and bringing new sounds and new listeners to the music.
Working with producer Benedic Lamdin of Nostalgia 77, Cullum selected a number of jewels from the American songbook, including the title track, which was penned by Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli, and added a couple of modern surprises - Sufjan Steven's "The Seer's Tower" and Randy Newman's
"Losing You." There are also collaborations with Gregory Porter ("Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood") and Laura Mvula ("Good Morning Heartache").

Interlude is the follow-up to Cullum's 2013 album Momentum, which he recorded with producers Dan the Automator and Jim Abbiss. Cullum has recently appeared on albums by Labrinth, Birdy and alternative hip hop super-group Deltron 3030. Jamie's catalogue dates back to his self-released, Heard It All Before, in 1999, while he was still studying at the University of Reading. Pointless Nostalgic (2002), released by legendary indie jazz label Candid Records, was certified Gold in the U.K. It was followed by Cullum's breakthrough major label debut, Twentysomething, which climbed into the Top 5 in the U.K., where it was subsequently certified triple Platinum. Cullum recorded two songs for the Meet the Robinsons soundtrack and was nominated for a Golden Globe® for "Best Original Song" for "Gran Torino," which he co-wrote for the 2008 Clint Eastwood film of the same name.

    Caravanserai (Speakers Corner)

To attempt to categorise Carlos Santana's music is, for the prophets of rock music, rather like dancing on the edge of a volcano. While the New York Times acclaimed the band as a reincarnation of Dizzy Gillespie's Cuban-jazz bigband from the end of the Forties, the specialist magazine Rolling Stone spoke of a »methadrine trip without visions«. Organ-player Gregg Rolie offered a very simple explanation of the origins of the highly differentiated sound colouring and the throb and chirp of the Afro-Cuban polyrhythms: he succinctly remarked that each member of the multi-cultural band just played the music which he had grown up with.

Just how thrilling this sounds is already evident from the first number on the disc, with its sounds of nature, twisted rhythms, and little snatches of melody, which - as in several other titles - remains spellbinding even without the fascinating drive of Santana's lead-sound. Of course there is plenty of solo material on the guitar which manifests itself in exuberant improvisations with a fusion of rock, salsa and jazz elements. When listening to this well-oiled rhythm machine, one quite rightly gets the impression that this unique band has stretched itself to its limits, and it is not by mere coincidence that they split up shortly afterwards. What has remained is one of the most powerful Santana records ever made.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Grand Stan (Pure Pleasure)

Mr. Levey worked with Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin and many other singers, and with the big bands of Benny Goodman, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. He was also a ubiquitous presence in Los Angeles recording studios for many years. But he earned his place in jazz history primarily through his work with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, the leading lights of bebop.

A self-taught drummer who played left-handed even though he was naturally right-handed, Mr. Levey was still a teenager when he began attracting attention for the ease with which he handled the breakneck tempos and tricky accents of the modern style. Working with Gillespie and Parker, he also attracted attention for being one of two white musicians (the pianist Al Haig was the other) in an otherwise all-black group, by no means a common sight in the 1940's.

Stan Levey was born in Philadelphia on April 5, 1926. The son of a prizefight promoter, he took up boxing about the same time he took up drums, and for a few years pursued both careers. But boxing, at which he was never exceptional, soon lost out to drumming, at which he was.

His work with Gillespie and Parker in 1945, when bebop was new and controversial, won him the admiration of his peers but not much of a living. Greater success came a few years later when he began working with big bands.

In 1954, after two years with Kenton, he settled in Los Angeles, where he spent five years with the Lighthouse All-Stars, the group in residence at a popular local nightclub. He was also in great demand for studio work, recording with many of the best-known musicians in jazz and playing on hit records like Peggy Lee's Fever. In addition, his drumming was heard on the soundtracks of hundreds of movies and television shows, including five Disney documentaries for which he wrote the music.

    • Frank Rosolino (trombone)

    • Richie Kamuca (tenor saxophone)

    • Sonny Clark (piano)

    • Leroy Vinnegar (bass)

Safari With Sabu (Out Of Stock)

    Limited to 500 copies

One of the most prolific conga players in the history of Afro-Cuban music, Louis Sabu Martinez spent his childhood beating rhythms on tin cans on 111th Street in New York City's Spanish Harlem. In 1946, he began a long association with drummer Art Blakey, and joined Dizzy GIllespie's band by 1948, following the murder of the influential conga player Chano Pozo. Despite being such a much-in-demand session player, he struggled with heroin for years until he overcame his addiction in 1956, formed his new quintet and recorded three history-making albums in less than three years. Safari With Sabu, probably the most celebrated of Sabu's works, combines both African and Latin elements with the American Jazz tradition, resulting in the missing link between bop and Sun Ra. Recorded with three congas (including Ray Barreto), bongos, timbales and tympani, along with complementary tenor and baritone sax, trombone, and an unobtrusive bass presence by Oscar Pettiford, 1957's Safari With Sabu is now back on shiny 180gr vinyl again for your listening pleasure.

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

The Only Full-Album Collaboration Between Iconic Vibraphonist and Definitive Saxophonist

Featuring Pianist Hank Jones, Bassist Paul Chambers, and Drummer Connie Kay

It's a shame more classic hard-boppers weren't unified for multiple collaborations. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson and saxophone virtuoso John Coltrane recorded just once together, and this 1959 date makes one wish they reunited for several return engagements. Lighthearted, upbeat, and joyously fluid, Bags & Trane plays like a private after-hours session of friends hanging back and toying with the music.

In collaborating with pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Connie Kay, the headliners go for broke, expanding the parameters of two Jackson originals as well as three standards, including Dizzy Gillespie's Be-Bop and the staple The Night We Called It a Day. Upbeat tempos and spirited interplay pulses throughout.

Mastered from the original master tapes, ORG Music's reissue presents this heralded release in exacting sound, with the instruments given full range and true-to-life imaging that takes you right into New York City's Atlantic Recording Studios when the pieces were recorded in January 1959. What a delight!

Relaxin' is the second classic album to be issued from the famed extended 1956 recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones). The set is notable for Miles' mastery with a mute as he he only plays open here on Dizzy Gillespie's Woody'n You, the emerging talent of a young John Coltrane and the strength and subtlety of the Red Garland led rhythm section. One of Davis' brightest outings featuring such memorable numbers as If I Were A Bell, It Could Happen To You and I Could Write A Book among others.
