Country Girl In The Big Apple

    Limited Edition 140 Gram Vinyl

By the time this performance was recorded on the final night of her NYC debut in 1977, this show had become the hottest ticket in town and the Bottom Line was deluged with celebrity ticket requests, including from other iconic performers like Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger, who both attended. This three night engagement at the legendary music room was essentially Parton's New York City coming out party, and even those not necessarily country fans can surely appreciate this show for its pure entertainment appeal and Dolly's undeniable charisma.

    Blue Smoke

Dolly Parton represents many things to different people, and the Country Music Hall of Fame member says her upcoming release is a reflection of her varied musical sides. The singer will release Blue Smoke in 2014 for Sony Music Masterworks in partnership with her own Dolly Records, and she stresses there's a little bit of something for everyone.

On this [album] I think there are all of the colors of my life in all the areas of music that you've allowed me to dabble in through the years, said Parton You will hear my old world mountain voice on songs like 'Banks of The Ohio' and 'If I Had Wings' my tender side on songs like 'Miss You - Miss Me' and 'Unlikely Angel.' My country / bluegrass side of songs like 'Home,' 'Blue Smoke' and 'Don't Think Twice' and my funny tongue-in-cheek side on 'Lover du Jour.

The album also contains her Grammy-nominated collaboration with Kenny Rogers, You Can't Make Old Friends, as well as a track with Willie Nelson, From Here To The Moon and Back.

Beginning with the release of Just Between You and Me with Porter Wagoner in 1968, Parton has placed 41 albums in the top ten of the Billboard Country Albums chart. Her most recent trip into that territory was 2009's Backwoods Barbie. Between record sales and digital downloads, she is one of a handful of female vocalists to sell over 100 million records during her career. She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1969, won the CMA Entertainer of the Year award in 1978, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

    Jolene

Jolene is Dolly Parton's 13th solo studio album, produced by Bob Ferguson. The title track, Jolene, tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is having an affair with her husband. It became Parton's second solo number-one country single; it also was a moderate pop hit for her, and also did well in the United Kingdom. It has been covered by numerous performers.

The album was released around the time Parton was embarking on a solo career, after having spent seven years as part of Porter Wagoner's weekly TV series and road show, and one of the album's songs, I Will Always Love You, was reportedly written to express the remorse Parton felt over the professional breakup. Released as the album's second single, it also became a number-one country single. In 1992, Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You was a mega-hit pop ballad.

Two of the album's songs had been released on previous Parton albums: Early Morning Breeze was a remixed version of a recording which had first appeared on 1971's Coat of Many Colors album (the Jolene version was remixed to more prominently feature the bass and electric steel), while Lonely Coming Down had first appeared on Parton's Wagoner tribute album, My Favorite Songwriter: Porter Wagoner, from 1972.

All I Ever See In You Is Me

Jillette Johnson is the rare artist who needs little sonic accompaniment to make an indelible impact. Produced by Dave Cobb (the Grammy Award-winner known for his work with Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson), Johnson's sophomore album All I Ever See in You Is Me offers up sparsely orchestrated songs centering on her spirited piano work and ever-changing vocal texture, an instrument that's irresistibly powerful whether she's belting out a refrain or whispering a hushed melody.

Like only the most timeless songwriters, Johnson finds infinite depth within that simplicity. Recorded at RCA Studio A - the historic Nashville space where Dolly Parton laid down 'Jolene' and 'I Will Always Love You' in the same three-hour span - All I Ever See in You Is Me bears an unhurried pace and warm intimacy that echoes the purposeful looseness of its production. Drifting between hazy romanticism and resolute self-awareness, Johnson examines heartbreak and resilience with a willful and magnetic vulnerability.

Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates 10 Years Of The Story (An Album To Benefit War Child)

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Brandi Carlile's breakthrough album The Story. To celebrate she recruited artists like Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, Pearl Jam, The Avett Brothers, Adele and many more for this Cover Stories album to benefit the charity War Child.

Brandi describes this project as ...a David and Goliath story. Since becoming a mother, the reality of a child s beautiful little life being torn apart by war felt like too big of a problem for me. So I asked my heroes and friends to help me launch a rock at the giant that is our refugee crisis and help in the only way we know how, through the power of music.

Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The NIght)

With his reintroduction to the pop world behind him, renowned singer-songwriter Yusuf (the artist known as Cat Stevens) is ready to once again strike up an intimate relationship with his audience. After retreating from the pop stage following classic '70s multi-platinum albums such as Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser And The Firecat and acclaimed hits such as Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and Father And Son, Yusuf returned in late 2006 with his first pop album in 28 years. Now he's back again with a second album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night).

I was absent from my audience for so long, Yusuf says, people thought another album would never come. The 2006 album, An Other Cup, was a surprise. With this new album, the distance is much less. I'm back to doing what I do best, painting pictures with music and storytelling on a very human, personal, intuitive level through lyrics and song, so I can help people feel good again. I guess in some ways the new album picks up where the Cat Stevens the public knows left off.

The album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night), was produced by the now singularly named Yusuf with help from Martin Terefe (James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Martha Wainwright), and recorded around the world. Guests include Morrison, Michelle Branch and Holly Williams (granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr.).

The new album is a response to the way An Other Cup was received, Yusuf explains. Fans said they wanted to hear more of me with a guitar. So, this album is much more folk-tale oriented. Also, apart from one track, all of it was recorded live. I listened to a lot of' '70s L.A. music, such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, and it inspired me to go back into that intimate style of recording. The songs are somewhat autobiographical but abstract enough so everyone can relate to them and connect them to their own lives.

The title track, Roadsinger, unfolds the tale of an outcast who revisits his old hometown; along the empty street a child peeks from behind a store window and gives an innocent smile out of the shadows of prejudice. The theme of a journey has always been big with me, says Yusuf. A journey that was unexpectedly cut short in 2004 was when Yusuf was flying from his London home to Washington, D.C., en route to a meeting with Dolly Parton, who had recorded Peace Train several years earlier and wanted Yusuf to play guitar on her cover of his Where Do the Children Play. The incident that made headlines was resolved in 2006 and Yusuf's new song Boots and Sand resulted.

There are plenty people who sing, but not enough who have walked far from their block, he says. I embraced an unexpected spiritual path that was confusing for many (converting to Islam in 1977). Sadly, I'm still often misunderstood. Some people want to put me into their own one-sided view, but I don't fit those limitations. My world is still borderless and wide. The removal of conflict and establishment of peace has always been my global objective. It's a shame that lot of people, including some Muslims, overlook the name Islam, which actually comes from the word 'Peace' in Arabic.

The forthcoming album also showcases some songs from his upcoming musical Moonshadow. The story takes place on a planet of perpetual night where only the moon's shine lights the darkness; it is about a boy's meeting with his Moonshadow and the adventures they share in search for the a world of the sunlight and happiness. As well as having many new songs, the surrealistic musical, Moonshadow also weaves classic songs from his past, including Morning Has Broken, Wild World and The First Cut Is The Deepest.

Yusuf's return to his guitar came about when his teenage artist-musician son, Muhammad (aka Yoriyos), brought one home again. One morning, Yusuf was alone in the lounge when he looked over and felt a draw of curiosity overtake him. He slowly picked it up. I put my fingers on the fretboard to make a 'C' chord, he remembers, and surprised myself, It's still there! It felt right. So I started playing again. On the forthcoming album, Yusuf even plays electric guitar on a couple of tracks, along with keyboards. This part of my career feels similar in one sense to when I began, Yusuf reflects. I had to get past the songs on Mona Bone Jakon before I could move on to Tea For The Tillerman, etc. This time around it was the same story: I laid the groundwork with my debut album, An Other Cup, which inspired a great new collection of songs and scribblings. I had quite a few in my back pocket and again it was my son who sparked the next step. He said, 'Isn't it time to start recording a new album?' And it was.

    Prisoner In Disguise

After the success of Heart Like A Wheel, Linda Ronstadt released Prisoner In Disguise in 1975, which further fortified her standing as one of America's most popular interpretive singers. The album yielded two strong singles, her beautiful renditions of the Motown classics Heat Wave and Tracks of My Tears. In addition the album included a banjo-strumming version of Neil Young's Love Is a Rose, a plaintive pop reading of Jimmy Cliff's reggae classic Many Rivers to Cross and a lovely cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. On Prisoner In Disguise Ronstadt delivers another collection of well-crafted, carefully arranged rock, pop and country songs that wonderfully exemplify her fine talent and taste. To All The Girls...

Decades of heartfelt performances and compositions in popular music have long solidified Willie's reputation as one of country's greatest romantics. To All The Girls... continues Nelson's musicial relationships with some of the most talented women in country, pop, and soul.

Among the centerpieces of To All The Girls... is the emotional duet with Dolly Parton, From Here To The Moon and Back, a song Parton wrote for the 2012 motion picture Joyful Noise. Willie also tackles the Bill Withers' classic Grandma's Hands with Mavis Staples, duets with Sheryl Crow on The Great American Songbook selection Far Away Places, and brings a new shade to his self penned classic Always On My Mind with Carrie Underwood.

Willie is also joined by familiar contemporaries including Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert, Norah Jones and Rosanne Cash. To All The Girls... reunites Willie with producer Buddy Cannon, who worked with Willie on his most recent successful releases, Heroes and Let's Face The Music And Dance.

Having turned 80 years old in April, Willie Nelson has no intentions of riding off into the sunset. Since signing to Legacy Recordings, Nelson has been steadily recording an releasing albums with the same rough-and-ready spirit of his timeless recordsing for RCA and Columbia Records. Heroes was praised by Uncut for being as spirited as it is poignant. Of 2013's Let's Face The Music And Dance, Paste cheered for his strongest and most engaged performances in a decade.

    Jason James

Jason James' self-titled debut, due out August 21st on the esteemed New West Records label, introduces a charismatic young artist whose effortless mastery of his chosen style serves as a deeply compelling vehicle for his vibrant creative spirit. The talented Texan writes rousing honky-tonk anthems, heart-tugging ballads and smart, sly-humored country-rock tunes that echo the vintage classics that are his touchstones, and sings them with a level of emotional urgency that makes it clear that he means every word. The 13 original compositions that comprise Jason James make it clear that the artist is making music that's timeless rather than retro, reflecting his interest in adding to country tradition rather than merely emulating it. A stellar supporting cast was recruited to bring James' songs to life: producers John Evans (Hayes Carll, Corb Lund), Keith Gattis (Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam) and engineer Steve Christensen (Steve Earle, Destiny's Child) were at the helm, while the virtuosic talents of Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam), Glen Duncan (George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton), Steve Hinson (Randy Travis) and New West labelmate Robert Ellis can be heard gracing the expansive, 13-song collection.

    The Happiest Lamb

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Audra Mae has landed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, a TV placement singing Bob Dylan's Forever Young on the FX series Sons of Anarchy, a record deal with SideOneDummy Records, and in late 2009, co-wrote Who I Was Born to Be, the only original track on Susan Boyle s chart-topping, 9 million-selling I Dreamed a Dream album. It has turned out to be a dream come true for the 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Oklahoma.

Growing up, show business was in Audra Mae's blood. She is the great grand niece of the late Judy Garland and her grandmother turned her on to country and folk artists like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and Woody Guthrie, while her grandfather introduced her to jazz.

Audra Mae is a natural without a doubt. The Happiest Lamb, produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero) spotlights Mae's incredible voice and her songs are timeless affairs augmented with minimal accompaniment, including acoustic guitar, piano, mandolin and sometimes mournful accordions.

    Like A Rose

Ashley Monroe, a member of the critically acclaimed trio Pistol Annies, presents her first Warner Nashville solo album, Like A Rose. Most folks, as soon as they hear Ashley Monroe, instantly recognize one thing: she's the real deal. Her songs resonate so profoundly because they reflect the experiences of an artist who, although she is just 26, has already seen both the best and worst that life has to offer.

Like a Rose has been a long time coming. Monroe has been creating music for more than half of her life-attracting along the way kudos from such music world giants as Dolly Parton, Guy Clark, Vince Gill and Jack White. Her new, full-length album release serves both to fill in the back-story and impart to us who she is today. At times her songs are dead serious, at others utterly hilarious, but always Monroe is an original with a compelling story to share.

Monroe spent her childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she immersed herself in all varieties of music ranging from country-she's not-too-distantly related to members of the legendary Carter Family-to rock, pop, rap and even opera. When she was 11, Monroe won a talent contest singing "I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" and two years later her father gave Ashley her first guitar. She developed a passion for writing songs, discovering that she could easily communicate her thoughts and sentiments through a six-string and her dynamic, exceptional voice.

One of the most rewarding artistic adventures for Ashley to date has been the Pistol Annies, a trio she co-formed in 2011 with her friend Miranda Lambert, whose chart-topping hit "Heart Like Mine" Ashley co-penned, and newcomer Angaleena Presley. Pistol Annies have provided Monroe with yet another outlet for her music. Their album, Hell on Heels, garnered rave reviews. The All Music Guide called the trio "a remarkably democratic supergroup" while veteran music critic Robert Christgau gave the album an A grade, citing its "expertly executed tunes."

Despite her list of previous accomplishments, everything she's done so far feels like it's been pointing the way toward Like a Rose. With songs that run the gamut from feel-good to controversial to contemplative, the album, produced by country music titan Vince Gill, offers the full range of Ashley Monroe's songwriting and performing skills. To maintain the honesty of Ashley's songs, Gill and the singer chose to record the album the way most of the greatest albums ever were made: sans gimmickry. "We just got the band in a circle and started playing the songs," Ashley says, "and once we felt like we had a feel for it, I'd do my vocal live-I never went back in to do a second vocal. Everyone put everything we had into the songs. There was a buzz in the room. We all had fun-it felt like a big old family, the way records used to be made."

Some of the songs were newly written for the album; others date back several years and felt right to revisit. The semi-autobiographical title track, one of the uncontestable highlights of the set, was co-written about six years ago with another totem of the American song-crafting community, Texan legend Guy Clark.

One song that is bound to raise some eyebrows refers to the same favored flower of the title tune, but in a much different sense: "Weed Instead of Roses" tells of a woman's desire to get a gift she actually desires from her beau, not just something that smells good.

"You Got Me" was co-written by Monroe and Karen Fairchild. Says Ashley, "It's about an addiction to something-one thing or another, whether you're stuck in a bad relationship or alcohol or whatever it is-and you try to hide it and fight it but you're kind of saying, 'Alright, you got me.'

On a more light-hearted note is "Monroe Suede," based on "a slick character that tries to get away all the time." Another is the self-explanatory "You Ain't Dolly (And You Ain't Porter)," a duet featuring Lambert's husband, CMA Entertainer of the Year Blake Shelton. "Morning After" confronts that uneasy feeling that often follows a too-good time and "She's Driving Me Out Of Your Mind," written with Jon Randall Stewart, comes straight from one of Ashley's many journals. "Two Weeks Late" was suggested by singer-songwriter Shane McAnally, who co-wrote it with Monroe. "He came in and said, 'I heard this phrase at the ATM: I'm a dollar short and two weeks late.' That was another one that just fell out. I grabbed the guitar and we started writing it up.

"Used," another standout, is an update of a song that appeared on Monroe's Satisfied album. "It came to me when I was about 17 and my manager at the time had just bought me this old 1950s Gibson guitar," she says. It came into my mind that things are worth more used, and I thought about my mom, who had lost my dad when she was 38. I was thinking, she had two kids, she's been through a lot, and, bless her heart, it's all gonna be worth it. Vince and I worked up this new version, which made it fresh for me."

And fresh it all is. Like a Rose avoids the trappings of too much contemporary music by sticking to the basics: memorable songs, incredible musicians, a superb voice, all of it captured honestly and without frills. As the saying goes, sometimes we need to stop and smell the roses. Take a whiff of Like a Rose and you'll find it smells pretty darn sweet.

For his eighth studio record Chuck Prophet relocated to Nashville and bedded down for a month at the Alex the Great Recording Studios with producer Brad Jones (Yo La Tengo, Dolly Parton, Josh Rouse). Chuck is joined here by his own band The Mission Express, Todd Roper (of Cake) on drums and The Spinto Band. They even brought in the local Methodist children's church choir for a few tunes. Soap and Water sees him blending his twisted soul-country-rock; a Alex Chilton-meets-Waylon Jennings via Dylan thing, with that Fender Telecaster he's had since his Green On Red days weaving a singular common thread throughout.

    Keep On Walkin'

With an abundance of vocal and instrumental talent, the Grascals follow in the footsteps of artists like Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmy Martin and the Osborne Brothers, bringing the sounds of bluegrass to country audiences. Their stunning debut, Keep On Walkin' blends old and new, classic songs and sparkling originals, polished harmonies and fiery picking into a seamless, soulful take on tradition that will be welcomed by hard core bluegrass fans, classic country devotees and audiences raised on Travis Tritt and Garth Brooks alike.

I am so proud of The Grascals. They are one of the best bluegrass bands Ive ever heard. They are all so very talented as vocalists and instrumentalists. Their new album is one of the greatest albums Ive ever listened to and the fact its their first just tells you how talented they really are. I was very proud to get to sing on Viva Las Vegas with them. They have been opening my shows for a while and people just love em. Dolly Parton

Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may take soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to leave Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs also fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Without revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like 'Velvet Snow' and 'Pistol Of Fire,' the wound down and pleasing 'Milk' and its yodeling cousin 'Day Old Blues,' the Kings of Leon ultimately escape Preacher Leons retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a simple 'amen.'

After landing a total of ten #1 hits, moving over 20 million records worldwide, and selling out shows everywhere with a stage, Collective Soul-Ed Roland [vocals, guitars, keyboards], Dean Roland [guitars], Will Turpin [bass], Jesse Triplett [guitars], and Johnny Rabb [drums]-staunchly and proudly remain a rock 'n' roll band through and through. Nowhere is that reassuring fact more apparent than on the first proper live album of the group's 25-year career, LIVE.

Fittingly, they introduce the collection with a live piano rendition of their biggest hit 1993's "Shine"-which would be crowned #1 Album Rock Song of 1994, win a Billboard award for "Top Rock Track," land on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the '90s," and notch Dolly Parton a GRAMMY® Award for "Best Vocal Performance" on her 2001 cover. Preserving the soulful spark that established them as the "Southern Gentlemen of the Alternative Rock Scene," Collective Soul build upon a formidable foundation. They were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. To date, they average over 1 million Spotify streams a month. For The Good Times

I love playing country music, says Norah Jones. More than any other genre, it makes me feel at home. Over the past 10 years, The Little Willies, a group of friends and like-minded souls that includes Lee Alexander (bass), Jim Campilongo (guitar), Norah Jones (piano, vocals), Richard Julian (guitar, vocals), and Dan Rieser (drums), have periodically gathered to make music for fun, playing their favorite country tunes and conjuring that down-home spirit.

With their second album, For the Good Times, The Little Willies take on songs by such masters as Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton. The results demonstrate the joy they take, and commitment they make, to a project that was first born for purely practical reasons.

Material for the new album was taken from the Willies live repertoire, and by passing around ideas drawn from disparate sources. The selections include more surprising choices, like the trucker classic Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves and Foul Owl on the Prowl, from the soundtrack to In the Heat of the Night. Alongside the more obscure songs, though, For the Good Times also includes some of the best-known songs in the history of country music, like Partons Jolene and the title track, written by Kristofferson and made famous by such singers as Ray Price and Al Green.

    Featuring Norah Jones

Norah Jones has a lot of friends. So many that she's been able to put together a compelling collection of her collaborations during the past decade with no less than 18 other artists. Among those invited to her party: Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ryan Adams, Outkast, and Foo Fighters. How cool is that?

Encompassing rock, country, pop, jazz, and more, the tracks span back to Jones' earliest recordings (a version of Roxy Music's More Than This with guitarist Charlie Hunter in 2001) and fast forward to her most recent performances, as Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John was recently cut with twee-pop darlings Belle and Sebastian. Featuring Norah Jones also includes recordings by some of Jones' own bands and side projects like The Little Willies and El Madmo, as well as performances with artists that she's toured with, including M. Ward, Sasha Dobson and Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings.

It's so exciting and flattering and fun when I get asked to sing with somebody that I admire, explains Jones. It takes you a little bit out of your comfort zone when you're doing something with another artist. You don't know what to expect-it's kind of like being a little kid and having a playdate.

    Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars

American music treasure Dwight Yoakam's special collaboration with leading bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars is set for release this fall. For the making of this album, Yoakam assembled a band of bluegrass luminaries to reinterpret favorites from his catalogue of gems. The 11-track album features Yoakam compositions from his extensive catalog.

This project was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby") and Yoakam, recorded at both Southern Ground Studio (TN) and the legendary Capitol Records Studio B in Los Angeles and mixed by Chris Lord Alge. For the recording, the production team gathered together a world-class band of bluegrass's current greats including Grammy winner and nine-time international Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year Bryan Sutton on guitar, Grammy winner Stuart Duncan on fiddle and banjo, 14-time Grammy winner Barry Bales on bass, Adam Steffey on mandolin (Alison Krauss), and Scott Vestal on banjo (Sam Bush).
