Donald Fagen--The Nightfly Mobile Fidelity'
NightflyOriginally released in 1982, The Nightfly is the critically acclaimed debut solo album from Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen. Produced by Gary Katz and engineered by Roger Nichols, both of which had worked on every Steely Dan record up to this point, the lush and romanticized 8-song set remains in the signature smooth pop-jazz vein of his famous band and features blatantly autobiographical themes concerning Fagen's suburban adolescence growing up in the late '50s/early '60s. Nominated for several Grammy Awards including Album Of The Year, The Nightfly was certified Platinum in both the US and the UK thanks to the album's duo of hits in I.G.Y. and New Frontier. 180g vinyl in Stoughton single-pocket paper-wrapped jacket with lyric insert at Furnace/Record Industry.1. Mobile Fidelity PLUS Enzyme LP Cleaning FluidMobile Fidelity PLUS Enzyme LP Cleaning Fluid Removes All Organic Materials Embedded in the Grooves of Your Precious Vinyl Records. Nothing on the Market Works as Well to Remove Oils, Sweat, Smoke and Mold!
Mobile Fidelity PLUS Enzyme Cleaner for all Vinyl LPs is a revolution in record cleaning! PLUS uses enzymes to more completely clean records than any other fluid we've found.
Most sound degrading contaminants found on records are organic in nature, oils and sweat from hands, skin, hair and other minuscule particles of dust are attracted by electrostatic charges on the vinyl and can become deeply embedded in the vinyl. The best way to remove these is with an enzyme specifically designed for this purpose. By coating the play surface with PLUS Enzyme Cleaning Fluid and allowing it to sit on the record surface for 3-5 minutes, the enzymes will break the particles down and loosen them from the grooves.
Highly purified, high surface tension water is used as the base for PLUS - water that will bead up, removing contaminants and holding them in the water beads, rather than allowing them to settle back into the grooves.
Using PLUS is a revelation, even on a clean record, the improvement is shocking. Drastically lower noise floor, increased dynamic range, richer tonal balance and clear undistorted peaks. Put simply, PLUS reveals more of the information that's been hiding in the grooves.
To get the most out of PLUS, we highly recommend using Mobile Fidelity PURE Record Rinse. PURE is ultra-pure water that has gone through four stages of deionization, after which it is triple-distilled, then treated with high intensity ultraviolet light to kill all bacteria and microbiological particles. This intense and thorough process leaves nothing in PURE to harm your vinyl.
Mobile Fidelity has a history of setting industry standards. We are the first to provide this quality of care in our base and rinse water. The ultraviolet light purification sets the bar for the competition to once again play catch-up. Mobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Cleaning SystemMobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Will Clean All of Your Contacts and Connectors to Insure Nothing Gets Between You and Your Music!
Mobile Fidelity proudly introduces the Mobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Cleaning System, the absolutely best way to clean audio contacts. This formula has been used in many mission-critical applications as well as by very well-known recording studios since the mid-1990s and is now available to help wring the fullest potential out of audiophile equipment.
Audio professionals are keenly aware that dirty contacts are a source of amusical distortion robbing their recordings of power, clarity, and musicality. Sound engineers use Sonic Connect on every metal-metal connection in both cabling and recording equipment: microphone XLR connectors, signal cable connectors, AC outlets and plugs, 2-inch open reel mastering decks and many others. Several hydroelectric dams use this solution to clean oxidation from their large power distribution lines to ensure maximum conductivity and reduce down time.
Mobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Cleaning System is a 2-step process. Step One is a solution designed to remove oxidation from metal parts. Step Two is a powerful solvent which removes grease, oils and other contaminants that impede and distort signal flow. In combination, SONIC CONNECT removes more and leaves less residue than any other contact cleaner we've used. Hear music and see video without the grunge and veiling introduced by dirty contacts. Once connections are fully cleaned with Sonic Connect, a contact enhancer may be used, if desired.
We recommend cleaning connections with Mobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Cleaning at least twice a year, more often if the equipment is in humid or very dusty environments. Analog lovers, call us today to find out how your system can benefit from Mobile Fidelity SONIC CONNECT Cleaning System!$49.99Record Cleaning Solution Buy Now
Mobile Fidelity's PURE Record RinseMobile Fidelity PURE RECORD RINSE is the Purest of All Record Rinses... PERIOD! You Cannot Find a Fluid Anywhere this... PURE!
Recommended as a Final Rinse Stage to Be Used With ANY Record Cleaning Solution to Remove Any and All Residual Detergents and Debris!
Mobile Fidelity's PURE Record Rinse is the purest water you can find for cleaning records. Ultra-high purity Mobile Fidelity PURE Record Rinse is also used as the base of our other record cleaning fluids and is perfect for use as the final rinse step before putting LPs back into their sleeves (preferably into MoFi inner sleeves!).
Every serious vinyl fan knows you should never rinse your records with tap water. Tap water contains trace minerals, chemicals and microscopic organic matter all of which can be deposited in freshly cleaned grooves. Bottled water comes from either the same sources as tap water or from natural springs which have an even larger amount of minerals.
Purified water isnt subject to the same restrictions and regulations that apply to food or drugs, so purified doesn't necesarily mean PURE. Distilled water without additives is harder to find than ever and even water that has been distilled once or twice can still have contaminants.
We highly recommend rinsing with Mobile Fidelity PURE Record Rinse. PURE is water that has gone through four stages of deionization, after which it is triple-distilled, then treated with high intensity ultraviolet light to kill all bacteria and microbiological particles. This leaves nothing in PURE to damage your vinyl.
Mobile Fidelity has a history of setting industry standards. Now, we are the first to provide this extraordinary level of quality in our rinse water. Call us today to learn more about how analog lovers can benefit from Mobile Fidelity PURE Record Rinse.$19.9932 oz. Record Cleaning Solution Buy Now
Cheap Xmas: Donald Fagen Complete (Awaiting Repress)Donald Fagen, the Grammy award wining voice of Steely Dan, since the 80's has continued to make an impact. His innovative 1981 release, The Nightfly, an instant classic was one of the first major pop releases to use the new digital recording technology, also draws an Album of the Year nomination at the Grammy awards and wins France's Grand Prix du Disques.
During the eighties, Donald takes on various projects including composing music for films (Heavy Metal, The King of Comedy, Bright Lights Big City), for other artists (Diana Ross, Yellowjackets, Jennifer Warnes, Manhattan Transfer) and co-production (The Gospel at Colonus soundtrack), as well as writing the occasional column on film music for Premiere Magazine.
As the nineties begin, Donald collaborates with producer and wife-to-be Libby Titus on a series of legendary club-concerts exploring the work of specific songwriters such as Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. This culminates in several national tours and the recording, The New York Rock and Soul Revue - Live at the Beacon Theater, which features Michael Macdonald, Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs, Charles Brown, the Brigati Brothers and others. Walter, back in NYC to produce Donald's solo album, Kamakiriad, joins the revue for the '92 season. 1993 - 2004: Kamakiriad, an account of a dangerous journey in the sedan of tomorrow is released to widespread acclaim in '93. Meanwhile, encouraged by the response to their performances in the Rock and Soul Revue, Donald and Walter, now under the management of Craig Fruin, debut the All New Steely Dan Orchestra that summer.
At the conclusion of the Art Crimes Tour in '96, Donald and Walter begin writing for a new Steely Dan CD, the first album of all new songs in twenty years. Two Against Nature finally comes out in 2000, supported by a tour, a PBS Television concert and several other TV appearances. The album wins four Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. A few months later, Steely Dan is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition, the two songwriters become the recipients of ASCAP's Founder's Award and honorary Doctorates from the Berklee College of Music.
2003 sees the release of Everything Must Go, yet another instant classic. In 2006, Donald releases the album Morph the Cat. The three solo albums, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat were released as The Nightfly Trilogy the following year. The Steely Dan band continues to tour through the summer of 2011.
Donald is also one of the three Dukes of September, the others being Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs.$119.99180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP Box Set - 7 LPs Sealed AWAITING REPRESS Buy Now
High FidelityOriginal soundtrack to the film High Fidelity (15th Anniversary).
Gen X rock buffs can revel in nostalgia with the High Fidelity soundtrack. The film centers on the romantic escapades of record-store owner and ex-club DJ Rob Gordon (John Cusack) and his full-time obsession with music. Since High Fidelity has as much to do with vinyl addiction as it does with the difficulties of love, great care has been taken with its selection of tracks, a solidly eccentric collection of heartache-heavy pop gems ranging from obscure '60s bands and groundbreaking artists like the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan, to Stevie Wonder and Stereolab. As in the film, there's a method to the compilers' elitist rock-geek madness. Even co-star Jack Black's schlocky blue-eyed cover of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On doesn't seem out of place.
The inspired screeches of acid-fried '60s singer-songwriter Roky Erickson's You're Gonna Miss Me set the pace for the musing, hangdog tone of the album. Besides the joyous licks of the Kinks' Everybody's Gonna Be Happy and Royal Trux's hybrid of hip-hip, techno, and aggressive rock on Inside Game, the bulk of the set is composed of moody folk-rock tunes like Dylan's exquisite Most of the Time and the Velvets' Oh! Sweet Nuthin. Other noteworthy tracks include Love's Always See Your Face, the Beta Band's Dry the Rain, Elvis Costello's wistful Shipbuilding, the stinging irony of Smog's Cold Blooded Old Times, and Stevie Wonder's soulful optimism on I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever). It's a fine, complementary batch of tunes that not only enhances the film's mood but is integral to its theme, and, as High Fidelity's Rob Gordon would agree, it'll go down as one of the top five soundtracks [originally] released in 2000. - Derrick Mathis (AllMusic)LP 1

Pirates (Awaiting Repress)Rickie Lee Jones Pirates On Numbered Limited-Edition 180-gram LP From Mobile Fidelity. Singer-Songwriters gorgeous-sounding 1981 album finally remastered!
Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates arrives like a cloudburst in the desert of Eighties formula pop music and recycled heavy-metal rock. So wrote Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone in his five-star review of the eclectic artists sophomore album, a set that continues to defy eras and styles. While less-well known than her 1979 self-titled debut, the ambitious 1981 record remains Jones definitive statementan effort steeped in biographical details, fictional circumstances, and classic literary elements.
Narratively blending West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet while also exploring spirit worlds and her breakup with Tom Waits, Pirates is at its core an idiosyncratic fusion of possibilities. And does Jones deliver! Accompanied by an all-star lineup that includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Steely Dan icon Donald Fagen, drumming colossus Steve Gadd, session pro Victor Feldman, and legendary jazz arranger Ralph Burns, the singer-songwriter achieves a musical nirvana that encompasses post-bop, coffeehouse folk, bohemian pop, romantic soul, Beat poetry, and Broadway showtunes.
Harmonized vocals and jive talking bring the piano-based records rich characters to life, making it seem as if listeners are overhearing conversations between strangers. In more than one way, Pirates is a self-contained theatrical production in which Jones singing is the star attraction. Her moody whispers, cries, and coos are the voices of spurned lovers, alienated outcasts, and unlikely heroines. Albums with this kind of stylistic magnitude, close-up intimacy, and emotional intensity come around only once or so a decade.
Mobile Fidelity is proud to have had the opportunity to remaster Pirates from the original analog master tapes and produce a version that captures every nuance of this great-sounding studio masterpiece. Co-produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker (whose long list of credits include Randy Newman, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton records), trust us when we say that this 180-gram LP is one of the finest-sounding pop records youll hear. Fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Carole King, and Sarah Vaughan should consider this requisite listening. MoFis mini-LP style packaging only adds to the allure.

A Dozen Five-Star Miles Davis Albums Spanning 1958-1971 Available from Mobile Fidelity on Definitive-Sounding LP
"Listen to This." As the original working title for Bitches Brew, the invitation resonates as the best way to approach a record that shattered conventions, altered music history, and still sounds far ahead of its time. The aural Mount Rushmore of jazz fusion, Bitches Brew is rightly ranked by virtually every significant press outlet among the 100 greatest albums ever made in any genre.
Sewn together with vibrant colors, voodoo textures, and ethereal moods, the 1970 landmark emerges with supreme detail and nonpareil feeling on Mobile Fidelity's definitive 180g 2LP. Mastered from the original master tapes, these audiophile editions join the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic treatment by Mobile Fidelity.
Davis conceived Bitches Brew by having the musicians stand in a semi-circle, where he pointed at them with vague directions for tempo, solos, and cues. The collective improvisation and interplay spawned a galaxy of melodies and grooves later spliced together by producer Ted Macero. Here, these distinct creations take shape with utmost realism.
Mobile Fidelity's reissues envelop you in expansive warm tonal blankets.
Gathering a Hall of Fame-worthy lineup of musicians, Davis follows through on his idea to "put together the greatest rock and roll band you ever heard" on Bitches Brew. The vast psychedelic expanses of warped echoes, liquid reverb, and tape loops speak to the leader's ambitious contrasts of light and dark, fear and hope. Yet the most absolute characteristic of this watershed effort lies in how it encourages free thought-the very principle with which Davis
conceived the everlasting beauty that is Bitches Brew.

Mainstream Perfection: Melodic Devices, Passionate Singing, Sophisticated Arrangements, Jazzy Backdrop Walk Down 52nd Street
Commanding Sonics: Mobile Fidelity Edition Sets the New Standard in How Joel's 1978 Classic Should-and Does-Sound
Chart-Topper Certified Seven-Times Platinum: Includes "Big Shot," "Honesty," "My Life"
Some artists embrace their success by repeating the steps that originally granted them fame. Billy Joel did the opposite, refusing to be contained by prescribed approaches or constrained by a given label. The follow-up to the breakthrough The Stranger, 52nd Street further expands on its predecessor's bold production techniques and inventive arrangements, incorporating more sophisticated textures as well as reflecting a jazz edge gleaned from New York City's thriving club scene.
A key component of Mobile Fidelity's Billy Joel catalog restoration series, The Stranger is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 45RPM 180 gram LP at RTI. The wider and deeper grooves-as well as the meticulous mastering process-yield resplendent dynamics, broad soundstages, three-dimensional perspectives, and tonal balances absent from prior editions. Indeed, Joel wouldn't sound more realistic if were playing ten rows away from you onstage. This is how you want to experience the 1978 LP that captured the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Teaming again with producer Phil Ramone, Joel capitalizes on his momentum, churning out another direct-sounding affair replete with captivating melodic devices, showmanship accents, and penetrating lyrics. The singer's concision and focus is evident via the tune's lengths, with only "Until the Night" breaking the six-minute mark. Hit singles "Big Shot" and "My Life" rattle forth with an urgency and intensity that Joel had not previously demonstrated, the combination of passionate deliveries, snide overtones, and insistent grooves setting the table for what follows.
Broadening his palette, and drawing from New York's thriving jazz club scene and the city's late-70s grit, Joel splashes Latin and jazz colors on several pieces-even employing veterans such as Dave Grusin and Freddie Hubbard to contribute along with a cast that includes a team of background vocalists and horn players. Everything is tastefully appointed, and yet the vocalist's trademark Broadway gaze and knack for the grand gesture coincide with the straight-ahead swagger.
52nd Street is one of the main reasons why Joel has always been championed for consistency. Everything here, from the production to the stand-up songs, helped redefine mainstream pop-rock. More than three decades later, it's finally available in fidelity that rivals that of those Columbia Records' master tapes produced right on 52nd Street. Mobile Fidelity takes you there and Joel sweeps you away.

Telepathically Executed Double Album At Fillmore East Among Ten-Best Live Records Ever Made
Ranks #49 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time List: Includes Epic Takes of Whipping Post and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Peerless Sonics: Mobile Fidelity Analog Reissue Provides Fifth-Row Seat to Historic March 1971 Concerts
Fillmore East is synonymous with some of the greatest concerts ever staged. Yet the venue belongs to one group: The Allman Brothers Band. This groundbreaking double album is why. As the collective's breakthrough, it broadcasts to the world wowing improvisational flights and seamless musical fusion the likes of which no one had ever heard. In communion with the crowd, the band establishes an interactive blueprint for all shows that followed, while its high-wire displays of powerhouse soloing and time-stretching arrangements remain the stuff of hall-of-fame legend.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed on dead-quiet vinyl RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP of At Fillmore East joins the unparalleled reissue imprint's other Allman titles in presenting the inimitable ensemble's music in the most lifelike, uncompromising fidelity possible. Myriad versions of the 1971 set exist, yet none possesses the audiophile sensibilities found here - sonic traits that whisk the listener to the midst of the Fillmore East for four gigs performed on March 12 and 13, 1971, plunking them down in a fifth-row seat surrounded by fervent fans and a smoke-filled atmosphere. Every slippery bottleneck note, every aching vocal moan, every soulful purr from the organ, every gritty interlocking riff comes across with unfettered clarity and realism.
While the record features multiple works the band never laid down in a studio, At Fillmore East is a meticulously conceived affair. The Allmans prepped rough sketches and layouts of the tunes, carving out spaces for each member's solos, and leaving the direction of such entirely up to the individual. As a result, the effort - anchored by iconic producer Tom Dowd's stellar production - presents a jazz-drifting rock band benefiting from both a sense of assured direction as well as opportunistic freedom.
Indeed, At Fillmore East is the rare sound of a group letting it all go, fearlessly maneuvering through bluesy shuffles, exquisite laments, graceful instrumental passages, and frenetic swamp-laden boogies. Achieved via a combination of virtuosic skill, visionary ambition, and natural chemistry, the six-piece burns white-hot with intensity and persuades via a padlock-tight rhythm section on which Duane's searing slide playing and Gregg's bottom-of-the-stomach vocals glide, each aural utterance coaxing on their respective mates to strive for new heights.

Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson (Awaiting Repress)Audiophile Reference Sonics: Mobile Fidelity LP Presents Lean, Stripped-Back, and Open Sound With Startling Immediacy and Realism
Soundtrack Merges Electric Fusion, Slashing Rock, and Aggressive Funk Via Astounding Lineup: Guitarist John McLaughlin and Trumpeter Davis Turn In Blistering Performances
Powerhouse 1971 Album the Greatest Jazz-Rock Record Ever Made
The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.
Miles Davis' A Tribune to Jack Johnson is the best jazz-record ever made. Equally inspired by the leader's desire to assemble the "greatest rock and roll band you have ever heard" as well as his adoration of Johnson, Davis created a hard-hitting set that spills over with excitement, intensity, majesty, and power. Bridging the electric fusion he'd pursued on earlier efforts with a funkier, dirtier rhythmic approach, Davis zeroes in on concepts of spontaneity, freedom, and identity seldom achieved in the studio. Mobile Fidelity's sterling reissue brings it all to fore with unsurpassed realism.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this collectable audiophile vinyl version of A Tribute to Jack Johnson joins the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic and packaging treatment by Mobile Fidelity. The most prominent difference longtime fans will notice is how much more aggressive and immediate the music sounds, aspects central to the composer's desires. Amazing degrees of instrumental separation and imaging allow you to focus on singular musicians and the roles they play.
Indeed, utilizing wah-wah and distortion, guitarist John McLaughlin comes on here with a nasty edge, slashing style, and vicious streak that allows A Tribute to Jack Johnson finally cross the divide between rock and jazz. Davis puts both feet in the former camp and permanently erasing any gap. In addition to highlighting McLaughlin's ripping performances, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP showcases the headliner's white-hot trumpet solos like never before. Bristling with exuberance, Davis' high-register passages explode with authority and commanding presence. Around him, a barrage of urgent backbeats, knifing riffs, and three-dimension bass lines emerge amidst an ink-black background.

Costello Teams With Musical Legends and Standout Producer T-Bone Burnett on Exemplary 1986 Album
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity LP Maximizes the Get-In, Get-Out, Live-In-the-Studio Immediacy and De-Congested Mix
Includes Introspective Songwriting Gems Such as "Indoor Fireworks," "Poisoned Rose," "Brilliant Mistake," and "Little Palaces"
Juggling Themes of Desire and Exile, Costello Strips Arrangements Down to Folk, Country and Pub-Rock Roots
Elvis Costello spent the year prior to recording King of America embarking on a solo tour, usually accompanied by producer/singer-songwriter T-Bone Burnett. The pair's decision to collaborate on Costello's 1986 album came naturally, and the music sounds it-emotional, effortless, literate, seemingly uncomplicated. Credit, however, not only goes to the best batch of Costello originals since 1982's Imperial Bedroom, but to the literally awesome and awe-inspiring cast of musicians Burnett invited to participate.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180 gram LP of this masterpiece broadens the live-in-the-studio intimacy and opens up the midrange, highs, and lows of Burnett's fabulously de-congested mix. Made with few overdubs or effects, King of America relishes organic approaches and faithful tones-as well as a vast spaciousness and balance not always evident on Costello's efforts with the attractions. Finally, Mobile Fidelity transports the listener to the semicircle of players that surrounded Costello in the studio, and highlights the benefits of the center-of-the-production miking technique employed on the singer's voice and guitar playing.
Given the brilliance of the performances, every music fan will want to be brought as near as possible to the purity of these sessions. A Hall of Fame-caliber list of instrumentalists accompany Costello, with Elvis Presley's T.C.B. mates Ron Tutt (drums), James Burton (guitar), and Jerry Scheff (bass) forming one band and drummer Earl Palmer (Little Richard), bassist Ray Brown (Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington), pianist Tom Canning, and organist Mitchell Froom ready in waiting as another. Several of these musicians formed yet another band, joined by drummer Jim Keltner of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and John Lennon fame. Oh-and the Attractions make a guest appearance on one track.
King of America-the title reflective of the threads of intentional, thought-provoking contradiction throughout-would be exemplary if just for the troupe. Yet it's the combination of chemistry, ability, sonics, and tunes that propel this watertight platter to iconic status. Unconcerned with writing a radio hit or adhering to a single musical theme, Costello wrote a majority of the material on acoustic guitar and on piano, tapping his pub-rock and folk roots in turning out songs that remain some of the catchiest, introspective, and deep of his career. Cuts such as "Indoor Fireworks," "Poisoned Rose," "Brilliant Mistake," and "Suit of Lights" epitomize Costello's inimitable manner of viewing adulthood, romance, and geographical transition through a transparent lens that blocks neither truth nor consequence.
As for the music? It swings (vide, Scheff's bass line on "Lovable"), swishes (Keltner's brushes on "I'll Wear It Proudly"), jumps (Brown's string bass on "Eisenhower Blues"), swoons ("Poisoned Rose"), and shuffles ("Jack of All Parades"). There's truly not a bum track here, and now, experienced in such high fidelity, the genius of every contributor can be easily heard and felt. Akin to Mobile Fidelity's other Costello reissues, this is not to be missed.

Trompe Le Monde
The Pixies Trompe Le Monde On Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP From Mobile Fidelity
Pixies Swan Song Sparks With Electrically Charged Hooks, Outer-Space Atmospherics, And Eminent Tunefulness
Mastered From The Original Master Tapes: Restoration Turns 1991 Album Into A Sonic Blockbuster
Frank Black-led Set Includes Contagious Cover Of The Jesus And Mary Chain's "Head On"
The Pixies verged on commercial breakthrough when the now-iconic band released Trompe le Monde in September 1991. A sea change in popular music tastes that the band helped initiate began to sweep the world. And the Boston quartet seemed prepared to lead the way, with this, its eminently tuneful fourth record, jam-packed with crafty hooks, prickly tones, catchy elements, outer-space atmospherics, electrically charged energy, and delightfully quirky lyrics.
As it stands, Trompe le Monde takes its place as one of the finest swan songs ever recorded. If the Pixies wouldn't have broken up right after its release, there's no telling what would've happened. All that you need to know is that the 15-track effort is as hard rocking and brilliantly innovative as any of the group's creations. That's no small feat.
Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180g LP presents the ensemble's abrasively melodic landmark in a fidelity it's never enjoyed in any prior version. Featuring lusher keyboards and moodier soundscapes than its predecessors, but also reclaiming the nasty guitar edginess and swooning distortion of the group's earliest efforts, Trompe de la Monde finally comes across as the Pixies intended: A sonic bridge between college-rock's influential cruder-textured albums and the polished professionalism that distinguished alt-rock classics.
In other words, Mobile Fidelity's version presents it as the perfect-sounding album: Replete with grit, rawness, and character, but mixed in with radio-friendly smoothness and virtuosic professionalism. Awash with incredible timbres and tonalities, myriad new details rise to the surface. Listen to the counterpoint melodies and layered vocals on "Letter to Memphis"; the trash-compactor feedback and thumping bass during the whipsawing "Planet of Sound"; the "Spyhunter"-like pace and limitless depth now present on "Subbacultcha." Dynamics, contrasts, low-end frequencies, and imaging are all significantly enhanced. Compared to the original CD, Trompe le Monde emerges as a new album-a sonic wonderland that's not far removed from that of Nirvana's celebrated blockbuster Nevermind.
Musically, the Pixies were never better. On par with the groundbreaking Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, Trompe le Monde explodes with hyper riffs, jerks to stop-start progressions, elates with cheerful emotions, and bangs on to giddy surf-fused arrangements. With Kim Deal absent from the songwriting process, vocalist/guitarist Frank Black takes the reigns and doesn't disappoint. Tales about sea monkeys ("Palace of the Brine"), aliens ("Planet of Sound"), and love ("The Sad Punk") bop alongside memorable jabs at hipster pretensions ("Subbacultcha") and inflated egos ("U-Mass"). A contagious cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" will have you hitting "repeat." Power pop, wanderlust punk, theatrical glam rock, reconfigured reverb-laden country-all here, all encouraging repeat listens.
Nearly lost due amidst the alternative trend that it played such a key role in spawning, Trompe le Monde gets new life courtesy of this extremely punchy, greatly balanced Mobile Fidelity issue. If you missed it the first time, don't make that mistake again. Essential with a capital "E," and the perfect way to close Mobile Fidelity's Pixies catalog restoration series.

Goodbye Cruel World
Elvis Costello Goodbye Cruel World on Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity
1984 Album Produced by Top Production Team of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley: Several Songs Enhanced With Top-Flight Horn Arrangements
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP is the Sonically Definitive Version
Costello and the Attractions Survive Dreadful 80s With Songs Concerning Loss, Identity, and Matters of the Heart
Part of Mobile Fidelity's Elvis Costello Reissue Series: Singer-Songwriter's First Eleven Studio Albums Available on Sumptuously Sounding 180g LP
Elvis Costello wasn't in a happy place when he began writing Goodbye Cruel World. His marriage collapsed between the record's start and finish. He was also dealing with what he deems the dreadful 80s-a period in which the importance of videos trumped musical merit, the government in his native England engaged in controversial conflicts, and nuclear threats hovered over daily life like a black cloud. What possible good came out of the age? A smart batch of songs that stands up to many of the singer-songwriter's better-known works and an underrated record that now sounds better than ever.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI, this collectable edition of Goodbye Cruel World joins Mobile Fidelity's acclaimed Costello reissues series in presenting the icon's most vital records in rich, dynamic, three-dimensional analog sound. Akin to many albums from the era, Goodbye Cruel World was hampered by bright, slick textures on the original pressings and digital counterparts. Here, Costello's fare is revealed to possess a warmer, more organic and intimate character. Costello's voice, as well as his band's nimble rhythms and Steve Nieve's R&B-spiked piano, occupy their own spaces amidst a wide, unconstrained soundstage.
The improvements rendered by this numbered, limited-edition LP bring significantly new perspective to Costello's mordantly witty songs addressing everything from stark romantic loss to erotic desire. Produced by the hit-making team of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, Goodbye Cruel World reflects the polish of the day in places but now reveals a deeper soulfulness, grit, and honesty. Such aspects particularly come to fore on multiple tunes featuring saxophonists Gary Barnacle, trombonist Jim Paterson, and percussionist Luis Jardim-the very first guests ever welcomed on an Attractions album.
With added instrumental assistance, Costello and Co. traverse styles ranging from rambunctious new-wave rock (The Deportees Club) to frisky New Orleans-derived blues (Sour Milk Cow Blues) to suave, jazzy pop (The Only Flame In Town). In the closing Peace In Our Time, a sobering albeit optimistic song whose verses still apply to contemporary times, Costello crafts the finale to a socio-politically conscious trilogy that began with Shipbuilding and Pills and Soap. It alone is the worth the price of admission to a record that's long deserved a better reputation and, with Mobile Fidelity's reissue, finally gets its just desserts.

Memories of You: Sinatra Waves Farewell to Capitol on Elegantly Dressed Standards Set from 1961
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity 180 Gram LP Captures Gracefulness of Ornate Orchestrations
Sinatra Reunited With Arranger Axel Stordahl, Collaborator That Spearheaded the Voice's Rise in the 1940s
Thematic Songs Address Goodbyes With Profound Sense of Sadness, Longing
Nobody says goodbye like Frank Sinatra. For his final album with Capitol, Ol' Blue Eyes elected to croon an unforgettable selection of farewell songs marked with longing, sadness, and poignancy. To make the occasion even more special, he teamed with arranger Axel Stordahl, the virtuoso that helped launch Sinatra's star at Columbia during the 1940s. The results amount to one of the finest send-off statements in history.
Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180 gram stereo LP presents the songs as they should be experienced: In rich, lush, front-to-back sound in which the strings soar and literally inhale and exhale. Sinatra's singing, as good as it's ever been during his career, comes across with unfettered transparency and tonal purity. Such is the fidelity, the music turns into aural poetry, rendering completely fluid and tube-amp warm the rushes of strings, words, and structures.
Sinatra fans continually debate which of the artist's albums rank as his best, but there's no doubting the status attached to Point of No Return. Unquestionably the most overlooked effort in the Chairman's Capitol catalog, it defies common expectation that it was made haphazardly to simply fulfill a contractual obligation. Sinatra's presence alone guarantees that isn't the case, yet Stordahl's involvement ensures this 1961 set is something very special indeed.
The chemistry between the old collaborators is immediately evident. Sinatra inhabits every phrase, feeling, and expression conveyed on the dozen standards, achieving an intimate connection with Stordahl's instrumental accents. Akin to the downbeat moods he casts on the immortal In the Wee Small Hours and Only the Lonely, the vocalist keeps calm and cool, yearning and reflecting as if he's strolling a barren downtown after midnight, a man left alone with his thoughts and memories. Somber, wistful, meditative, teary-eyed sentimental-Sinatra paints each song with the emotions they need, nothing more and nothing less.
From regal ("These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)") to nostalgic ("I'll Be Seeing You"), relaxed ("September Song") to dramatic ("When the World Was Young"), Stordahl's treatments blush with natural ease and instinct, setting up Sinatra for countless moments of sublime beauty. Vocal pop aficionados, you don't want to miss this classic.

MUSD-MFSL-430xJerry Garcia And David Grisman
Jerry Garcia And David Grisman
Numbered Limited Edition 180g 2LP from Mobile Fidelity
Contemporary Interest in Roots Music Kick-Started by Stellar Grammy-Nominated 1991 Collaboration
Recording Now As Realistic, Natural, Close-Up, Intimate, and Enveloping as Any Acoustic Record Released: 1st Time-Ever on LP
Garcia and Grisman Put on Virtuosic Performance, Make Way Through Pop Standards, Blues Classics, Folk Staples, Bluegrass Jaunts, and More
Jerry Garcia achieved monumental accomplishments over a prolific career, yet the guitarist never sounded better than on his first official collaboration with longtime friend and fellow instrumental maestro David Grisman. Indeed, contemporary interest in roots music can be directly traced to this stellar Grammy-nominated 1991 collaboration. Putting distinctive rustic spins on pop standards, blues classics, and folk staples, the kindred musical spirits' earnest authenticity and relaxed intimacy are matched only by virtuosic playing and superb production. As realistic, warm, close-up, and immersive as any acoustic album, Mobile Fidelity's reissue raises the bar on the meaning of reference-standard.
Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP of Garcia/Grisman takes a record forever renowned for breathtaking sonics to another level. Originally released on Grisman's fabled Acoustic Disc label and recorded at his plush studios, the album now sounds even more realistic-with distinctive tones, palpable air, smooth vocals, three-dimensional soundstaging, balanced imaging, and timbral extension that mirror the feeling and experience of hearing live music in a small space.
Unadorned with any post-production tricks or overdubs, Garcia/Grisman breathes with naturalism and presence. You will effortlessly detect the full body of the instruments, witness the woody grain textures, and get lost in the surprisingly velvety qualities of Garcia's lullaby-like singing. Mobile Fidelity's meticulous pressing also marks the first time this delightfully joyous affair has been issued in analog form. You will never hear a better-sounding Americana-styled recording.
Pals since the mid-1960s, Garcia and Grisman bonded over their love for traditional folk and bluegrass. The two teamed up amidst what became a gold rush of top-notch productivity and creativity for Garcia. Partnering with bassist Jim Kerwin and percussionist/fiddler Joe Craven, the pair approaches every passage with innate ease, as if either musician could finish the others sentence. The affable chemistry and soothing interplay wash over a selection of songs as notable for their diversity as the way Garcia and "Dawg" turn them into the equivalent of old friends you haven't seen in years.
Exquisite melodies and jewel-shaped notes decorate the simple, convivial structures of tunes that hop, jump, skip, skitter, and bop. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the legendary gypsy-jazz exchanges between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and equally sharp. Swirling with Middle Eastern modality, the closing 16-minute-plus rendition of Grisman's rippling "Arabia"-complete with a section based on a Cuban fold theme-is alone enough worth the price of admission to this sensational session. But there's so much more.
The quartet delves into Celtic themes ("Two Soldiers"), jazz-grass ("Grateful Dawg"), old-world ballads ("Russian Lullaby"), and Appalachian flavors ("Walkin' Boss") with nonpareil skill and soulfulness. Garcia and Grisman's tandem picking throughout epitomize sublime. And for many listeners, the duo's revised version of the Grateful Dead staple "Friend of the Devil" ranks as the finest-ever recorded, the pace patient, the narrative vocals heartfelt, and the synchronous solos tailor-made for the enveloping progression. Better yet, it's all captured in astonishing fidelity.

An Innocent Man (Awaiting Repress)An Innocent Man on Numbered Limited Edition 180 Gram 45RPM 2LP from Mobile Fidelity
Infectious Doo-Wop, Carefree Soul, Harmonious Pop a Testament to Music of Joel's Childhood
Album Sounded Mediocre For the Longest Time-No Longer: Mobile Fidelity Reissue Allows You to Hear This Pleasing Set With Fresh Ears
Another Joel Blockbuster: Seven-Times Platinum 1983 Affair Includes "Uptown Girl," "For the Longest Time," "An Innocent Man," "Tell Her About It"
After making The Nylon Curtain, Billy Joel felt the need to exhale and get back to the carefree music of his childhood. He also met supermodel Christie Brinkley, who brought serious degrees of levity and romance to his world. In love, relaxed, and out to have fun, the singer crafted An Innocent Man, arguably the most easygoing and pleasing album of his career. Featuring four Top 40 pop singles and the same number of Top 5 Adult Contemporary hits to grace the Billboard charts, the record remains a commercial staple.
An essential title in Mobile Fidelity's Billy Joel catalog restoration series, An Innocent Man is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI. The resulting presentation effortlessly outshines that heard on all previous editions of this 1983 set. Particularly, the effervescent harmonies now possess an airiness and extension that lends to realistic tonal decay. Instruments are balanced and placed on a wider, deeper soundstage, contributing improved to improved imaging and spaciousness. Joel's voice, too, comes across with tremendous clarity, presence, and body. These songs have never sounded so contagious.
Per usual, Joel proves a melodic jukebox. The vocalist's grasp on structure, hooks, and delivery help make this batch of songs among his most beloved, easy to hum, and impossible to ignore. Much of the appeal resides in Joel's understanding of the early rock and roll, doo-wop, and soul that he grew up hearing in New York, and the manners in which the popular songwriters favored simplicity over complexity, good-natured vibes over seriousness, and romantic charm over introspective sadness.
Whether floating on a cloud on the giddy "Uptown Girl" (check out his falsetto), doubling as both the lead and background vocalist on the reminiscent-themed "The Longest Time," or tapping gospel undercurrents on the tribute "Keeping the Faith," Joel revels in 50s and 60s pop constructs, turning out amiable refrains and unforgettable moods. Love perfumes the air, and Joel can't get enough, and it's a feeling he passes on to his listeners.
As the calm before stormier periods in his life, and a timeless connection to America's finest pop music traditions, An Innocent Man is indeed innocent-a guiltless pleasure that keeps on giving.

Songs In The AtticSongs In the Attic on Numbered Limited Edition 180 Gram LP from Mobile Fidelity
1981 Live Album Finds Joel Adding Warmth to Ballads, Punch and Kick to Rockers
Taking You to the Stage: Mobile Fidelity Version Pulls Gives You a Dead-Center Seat and Wonderful Sonic Perspective
Ideal Summation of Joel's Early Period Material, Enhanced by Accomplished Band in Concert Setting
Great live albums often function as documents of a performer's stinting onstage abilities, stopgaps between studio albums, introductions to a musician's earlier work, and/or opportunities for familiar material to be showcased in superior ways. Songs In the Attic serves all of these purposes and more. As Billy Joel's first live album, it's still his best, punctuated by dynamic renditions of favorites and deep cuts, and augmented by a tested band in sync with the pianist.
A vital component of Mobile Fidelity's Billy Joel catalog restoration series, Songs In the Attic is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI. The resulting presentation effortlessly outshines that heard on all previous editions of this 1981 set. Joel's piano possesses fuller body and lifelike resonance. His veteran group's contributions emerge with newfound clarity, dynamics, decay, and extension. Balances are supreme, and shades and colors blend, amplifying richness and presence.
On the heels of three multi-platinum albums and a commercial breakthrough, Joel released Songs In the Attic to both tide fans over until 1982's The Nylon Curtain as well to feature material in a looser, warmer setting. The record highlights not only the singer's consistency and knack for indelible melodies, but savvy live techniques. Upbeat tunes such as "Everybody Loves You Now" receive a more fleshed-out treatment that yields added punch and swagger, while balladic numbers like "I've Loved These Days" take on a cozy warmth akin to the feeling of putting on a sweater on a cool fall day.
Songs In the Attic also bridged the gap for listeners for whom Joel was then a new entity, as many didn't come to his music until The Stranger. Hence, tracks like "Captain Jack" and "The Ballad of Billy the Kid," from Piano Man, get a fresh identity, particularly courtesy of a backing band that, by then, had been gigging with Joel for years. No wonder that, unlike a majority of live records, Songs In the Attic yielded two Top 40 pop hits: "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and "She's Got a Way." No matter from what angle it's viewed, the set stands as one of the most important and enjoyable live records ever released.
