    Extension Of A Man

Extension of a Man is an album released by the R&B/Soul singer Donny Hathaway in 1973. It was his last studio album. It's noted for including a young Stanley Clarke of (then) Return to Forever on a couple of tracks, as well as drummer Fred White, brother to Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White (who worked with Hathaway in Chicago in the early days).

Donny Hathaway had one of the strongest voices in Soul, both in mere vocal prowess and in his lyrical abilities. The Ghetto, one of his most beloved songs, is on par with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (incidentally also a famous cover by Hathaway, as featured on this Live album) or Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up.

1972's Live cemented Hathaway's reputation as one of the forerunners of Soul, giving wonderful Jazzed-up interpretations (two of them running over the 10-minute mark) of classics. Hathaway plays with the audiences of the Troubadour in Hollywood and the Bitter End in New York like a preacher from the pulpit; their call-and-response is one of the elements that makes this album a classic of epic proportions.

Donnie Darko Original Motion Picture Score (Discontinued)

Released shortly after 9/11, Donnie Darko has become a cult masterpiece. Michael Andrews scored the album in his studio of vintage Moogs and electric vibraphones, and-when the music budget was capped-delivered a humble piano & vocal ballad covering the Tears for Fears track "Mad World" with his pal Gary Jules.

"Rookie composer Michael Andrews, whose only previous work was for television's 'Freaks and Geeks,' captures the underlying dread and unsettling beauty of the film Like Air's soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides, Andrews' songs create a specific sense of place." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE

    Mature Themes

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is back with the new album, Mature Themes, the band's second album for 4AD and the official follow-up to their 2010 breakthrough album, Before Today. The first single from the album will be a cover of Donnie and Joe Emerson's Baby, which also features guest vocals from Dâm-Funk.

"Sonically, it's comparable," Pink says of the new work, 13 songs he's only recently penned. "There are definitely not any links to my lo-fi origins. It's so diverse but so different from anything I've done before. In a sense, its really the record I wanted to make back when I made Before Today, but couldn't due to pressures and different factors. We had time to let our hair down and try new things."

Pink was able to bring in a large cache of vocal melodies and song foundations he'd previously recorded to his new phone. "Getting my first Android phone changed my life," he explains. "I don't have to memorize everything. I can put ideas down on the fly and save them for a rainy day, which is something I never had the luxury of doing in the past. I've got this great talent for co-opting memories at random, this time I've got a hundred ideas on a moment's notice."

Surprises is a beautiful Soul Jazz album by flutist Herbie Mann, featuring singer Cissy Houston. Released on Atlantic Records in 1976, the album peaked at #32 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart, #56 on the Billboard R&B Album chart, and #178 on the Billboard 200.

Emily Cissy Houston (born September 30, 1933) is an American Soul and Gospel singer. After a successful career singing backup for (albums of) such artists as Wilson Pickett, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Donnie Hathaway, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin, she embarked on a solo career, winning two Grammy Awards for her work. She is the mother of the late Whitney Houston, aunt of Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, and a cousin of opera singer Leontyne Price.

On September 29, 2014, at 81 years old, Cissy sang backup to a standing-ovation performance with Aretha Franklin of Adele's Rolling in the Deep' and Ain't No Mountain High Enough on the Late Show with David Letterman.

As the '76 liner notes say: Cissy Houston. Only now is she beginning to emerge from her cocoon after so many years with the Drinkards and the Sweet Inspirations. Cissy...is showcased here like a star-in-waiting.

    Two Vines

Alt-electro pioneers Empire Of The Sun return with their third studio album, Two Vines, set for release via Astralwerks. With Two Vines, the Australian band invites listeners to enter the jungle paradise that marks the third remarkable age of the Empire Of The Sun. Through a waterfall of dreams, beyond the white light of an ice curtain lies a lush, green world where childlike innocence and ancient wisdom are one. The album's first single, "High & Low," offers a glimpse of this dreamlike kingdom.

"We always saw Empire as a movie," says Nicholas Littlemore, the co-pilot with Luke Steele of this fantastic vessel of electro-futurist sound and vision. "The whole concept was based around childhood fantasies; being in bed and staring at the posters on your wall, whether they were monster movies or outlandish rock stars or pieces of art. We always wanted to be one of those posters on a child's wall that had so much imagination locked into it, a kind of invitation that pushes you over the edge into dream world. With this record, it's time to take that next step."

Recorded in Hawaii and Los Angeles, Two Vines is co-produced by Empire Of The Sun and Peter Mayes (Sia, The Killers, Mika), alongside long-term collaborator, Donnie Sloan (Midnight To Monaco). It also sees the creative circle expanding with esteemed pianist/arranger Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre, from David Bowie's Blackstar band, featured heavily on the album. Factor in Wendy Melvoin from Prince's Revolution, as well as Fleetwood Mac's genius guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, and the Empire's rainbow has never been so vast and colorful.

"Going to Hawaii to record was the best idea," says Luke Steele of sessions at Honolulu's Avex Studios - where Kanye West recorded 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. "That was the catalyst for me. I'd spend the morning surfing, then roll in and make music into the night."

    Seesaw

Seesaw reunites force-of-nature blues-rock vocalist Beth Hart and guitar hero Joe Bonamassa for a second album of choice covers from various musical eras. As with their first outing, Don't Explain, the project is in collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Crowes). Each of the three principals suggested and selected tracks for the 11-song set list, which mines soulful classics previously made famous by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, and Nina Simone.

The one-two punch of Hart's powerhouse vocals and Bonamassa's scorching solos both honors and reinvents the original recordings. They are backed by the same world class band that kept the grooves going on Don't Explain: Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Carmine Rojas (bass), Blondie Chaplin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (organ, piano). This time out, their mighty sound is augmented by a horn section, with Lee Thornburg on trumpets and trombones, and Ron Dziubla on saxophones.

For Hart and Bonamassa, making music together grew out of the friendship and mutual artistic appreciation they developed after crossing paths on the road numerous times, particularly on the festival circuit in Europe. Bonamassa wanted to do a project with her, and came up with the idea for a soul covers record. Shirley, who's produced 12 of Bonamassa's albums, was enthusiastic, and Bonamassa contacted Hart. "When I got the call that he wanted to do a soul record with me, I figured I'd be the background singer. He said 'no, you're singing lead.'" The chemistry clicked, and Don't Explain was released in 2011, followed now by 2013's Seesaw-in between, both Hart and Bonamassa have toured, recorded solo albums, and reached new career highs.

"What's so cool about these projects is that when Joe and Beth enter the studio, he comes in as a guitar player, and she comes in as a singer," says Shirley. "They're getting together just to play fun music, sing some favorite songs, without the pressure of career issues they might have on solo projects. The point is to pick up and celebrate songs that didn't get their due in the day, and to pay homage to ones that were truly classics. The vibe this time is more upbeat than on Don't Explain, lots of big band horns."

    Beulah

Beulah. It's a small, complicated word with a tangle of meanings.

It's the title of John Paul White's new album, his first in nearly a decade, a remarkably and assuredly diverse collection spanning plaintive folk balladry, swampy southern rock, lonesome campfire songs, and dark acoustic pop. Gothic and ambitious, with a rustic, lived-in sound, it's a meditation on love curdling into its opposite, on recrimination defining relationships, on hope finally filtering through doubt.

Beulah is also a White family nickname. "It's a term of endearment around our house," White explains, "like you would call someone 'Honey.' My dad used to call my little sister Beulah, and I call my daughter Beulah. It's something I've always been around."

Beulah is also something much loftier. For the poet and painter William Blake, Beulah was a place deep in the collective spiritual unconscious. "I won't pretend to be the smartest guy in the world," says White, "but I dig a lot of what he's written. Beulah was a place you could go in your dreams. You could go there in meditation, to relax and heal and center B photo credit: Allister Ann 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com SACKS A CO. N D yourself. It wasn't a place you could stay, but you came back to the world in a better state."

And perhaps the music on this album originated in that "pleasant lovely Shadow where no dispute can come." According to White, the songs came to him unbidden-and not entirely welcome. "When these songs started popping into my head, I had been home for a while and I was perfectly happy. I wasn't looking for songs. I didn't know whether any would pop back in my head again, and I was honestly okay with that. I'm a very happy father and husband, and I love where I live. I love working with artists for a label that I think is doing good work."

Far from the grind and glamour of Nashville-where he worked for years as a working songwriter before stepping into the spotlight himself-White settled in his hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a wellspring of gritty Southern rock and soul since the 1960s. Together with Alabama Shakes keyboard player Ben Tanner and Shoals native Will Trapp, he founded and runs Single Lock Records, a local indie label that has released records by some of the Yellowhammer State's finest, including Dylan LeBlanc, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and legendary songwriter and keyboard player Donnie Fritts. The label is based in a small ranch house a stone's throw from White's own home, which would come in handy when those songs started invading his head.

"Honestly, I tried to avoid them, but then I realized the only way I was going to get rid of them was if I wrote them down. I got my phone out and I'd sing these little bits of melody, then put it away and move on. But eventually I got to a place where it was a roar in my head, and that pissed me off." Due to his experiences as a gun-for-hire in Nashville, White was reluctant to romanticize the creative process, to turn it into a spiritual pursuit. "Then one day I told my wife I think I'm going to go write a song. She was as surprised as I was. I went and wrote probably eight songs in three days. It was like turning on a faucet."

Most artists would kill for such a downpour, but White was wary of the consequences. He knew that writing songs would lead to recording them, which would result in releasing them, and that means touring and leaving home for weeks at a time. "As soon as I write a song, I start thinking what other people might think of it. I've talked to friends about this: What is it about us that makes us do that? Why can't I just sit on my back porch and sing these songs out into the ether? I don't have an answer for it yet, but I think it's just part of who I am. I need that reaction. I need to feel like I'm moving someone in a good way or in a bad way. I need to feel like there's a connection."

White threw himself into the project, no longer the reluctant songwriter but a craftsman determined to make the best album possible-to do these songs justice. He cut several songs at the renowned FAME Studios in his hometown, where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, the Allmans, the Osmonds, Bobbie Gentry, Arthur Conley, and Clarence Carter recorded some of their most popular hits.

One product of those sessions is "What's So," which introduces itself by way of a fire-andbrimstone riff, as heavy as a guilty conscience-the kind of riff you wouldn't be surprised to hear on a Sabbath album. But White's vocals are gritty and soulful, a product of the Shoals, almost preacherly as he sings about earthly and eternal damnation: "Sell your damn soul or get 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com SACKS A CO. N D right with the man, keep treading water as long as you can," he exhorts the listener. "But before you do, you must understand that you don't get above your raisin'." It's the heaviest moment on the record, perhaps the darkest in White's career.

At the other end of the spectrum is "The Martyr," one of the catchiest tunes White has ever penned. The spryness of the melody imagines Elliott Smith wandering the banks of the Tennessee River, yet the song is shot through with a pervasive melancholy as White wrestles with his own demons. "Keep falling on your sword, sink down a little more," he sings over a dexterous acoustic guitar theme. This is not, however, a song about some unnamed person, but rather a pained self-diagnosis: "These are the wounds that I will not let heal, the ones that I deserve and seem so real." White knows he's playing the martyr, but he leaves the song hauntingly open-ended, as though he isn't sure what to do with this epiphany beyond putting it in a song.

The rest of Beulah was recorded in the Single Lock offices/studio near White's home. "I can be more relaxed about the process. We can all just sit there and talk about records or baseball without feeling like someone's standing over our shoulders. That's a big deal to me, not to feel pressured. And I'm only about twenty yards away from home, so I can walk over and throw a baseball with my kids or make dinner with my wife."

Some of the quieter-but no less intense-songs on Beulah were created in that environment, including the ominously erotic opener "Black Leaf" and the Southern gothic love song "Make You Cry." As he worked, a distinctive and intriguing aesthetic began to grow clearer and clearer, one based in austere arrangements and plaintive moods. These are songs with empty spaces in them, dark corners that could hold ghosts or worse. "There were certain moments when Ben and I would finish up a song, listen back to it, and think how in the world did we get here. But that's just what the songs ask for. These are the sounds in my head. This is the sound of me thinking and living and breathing and doing."

Once White had everything assembled and sequenced, it was time to give the album a title, to wrap everything up for the listener. Beulah stuck-not only because of family history or Blake, but because White realized that making music was his own trip to Beulah. "If you had to sum up what music is for most people in this world, it's that. It's that escape. It's that refuge. You go there and you come back and you use that to help you with your life. You always have that as a place to go."

    Action-Refraction

Action-Refraction marks bassist, compser and bandleader Ben Allison's 10th album and first collection of music composed by other artists. With nine critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader to his credit, Allison has solidified his rep as a cutting edge composer. To celebrate his 10th, he turned his ear towards the music of some of his favorite artists, creating an inspired, atmospheric, and at times art-rock mix tape featuring the music of PJ Harvey, Donny Hathaway, Thelonious Monk, Neil Young, Samuel Barber and Roger Nichols.

    Paul Walker

Consisting of Patrick Kindlon (End of A Year, Self Defense Family), Chris Villeneuve (drums), Nick Cogan (guitar), Cory Galusha (guitar) and Pat Wynne (bass), Drug Church is the sound garbage makes when thrown off a roof into the dumpster your dickhead boss rented for your underpaying contractor gig. Come back in a few weeks and steal the copper piping because there's no other benefit to the job and you're probably getting sick from asbestos, so to hell with it.

Borrowing heavily from bands like Seaweed and Quicksand, Drug Church released their debut, self-titled EP in July of 2012, the perfect record to listen to as you skate home from your night shift cleaning up puke in the bathroom of a Steak & Shake. It even scored the band a spot on Alternative Press' "100 Bands You Need To Know" list earlier this year!

2013 rolled around the guys took a break from delivering pizzas and entered the studio to record their first full-length, Paul Walker; surely named for their secret obsession with 'Varsity Blues' and 'Eight Below.' And the thought of letting these dudes wild again in the studio scared the shit out of No Sleep President Chris Hansen; rightfully so!

No Sleep offered us a bunch of money and suggested producers to record this LP with and we said, 'Bro. You forgot the struggle, you forgot the streets," Kindlon says. "We're recording this as the coregods intended: Quick and nasty.' So what's what we did. Pushpit.

Nonetheless, the guys somehow managed to crank out ten of the gnarliest tracks you'll hear all year long, including the new song, "Donny's Woods."

For everyone who ever thought about faking their own death, we present 'Donny's Woods' a song about how quickly people will forget about your ass, Kindlon tells AltPress.com.

One thing people won't forget though is how awesome Paul Walker is...oh and the album is pretty good too!

    My Feeling For The Blues

    Import

Donny Hathaway as arranger, King Curtis as producer, and a rhythm section that included Jerry Jemmott and Cornell Dupree. The groove tempos are not too fast and not too slow; in other words just right. The horn arrangements are sublime and Freddie's performance is top-notch. My Feeling For The Blues is a one-of-a-kind blues album by the great Freddie King.

The first two songs, Yonder Wall and The Stumble set the tone for the whole recording. In fact, the album's opener is a laid-back rendition of Elmore James's Yonder Wall. King Curtis lays a great, soulful horn and Freddie's guitar sounds more upfront than on his previous LP.

From there, My Feeling for the Blues listens as a tribute to the Giants of the Blues genre: King tackles B.B. King's I Wonder Why and Woke Up This Morning, T-Bone Walker's Stormy Monday, Jimmy Reed's You Don't Have to Go and Eddie 'Guitar Slim' Jones classic The Things I Used to Do, while upping the pace with a frantic, instrumental take on Ray Charles What'd I Say.

One of the top best blues albums was getting harder to find, but is now available on vinyl again. Do yourself a favour and make sure you grab this one!

    You Are Not Alone

Soul Gospel Legend at the Top of Her Game: Staples Declared Best Artist at 2010's Lollapalooza Festival

Hallelujah: You Are Not Alone Might Be the Best New Album You Hear in 2010

Stellar Set Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Features Songs by Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Tweedy, Randy Newman, and More

The best album you hear in 2010? You Are Not Alone will be at the top of the list. This is music that's timeless, soulful, and pertinent, performed with an energy and commitment that burns with the same level of conviction as Mavis Staples' belief in a higher power. Here's a record that will change your life and elevate your mood. Just as its two main architects intended.

When Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples sat down to talk about what they wanted her new album to sound like, they both turned to the original spiritual roots of the Staples Singers as a backbone. Both wanted to make a record about connection, about reaching out to someone through the power of music. What they achieved is the album of Staples' career, a warm, powerful, spiritual, and fervent collection of brilliantly chosen and interpreted songs.

Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilcos studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production--glorious on LP--mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Backed by Mavis smoking touring band (Rick Holmstrom, guitar, vocals; Jeff Turmes, bass, vocals; Stephen Hodges, drums; Donny Gerrard, background vocals) and featuring guest turns from Tweedy and Wilcos Patrick Sansone, with background vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora OConnor, the album cradles Mavis exquisite voice, allowing her to stretch out emotionally on tracks like Randy Newmans Losing You and the Creedence Clearwater Revival chesnut Wrote a Song For Everyone.

The two songs Jeff wrote for Mavis meld seamlessly into the vibe and theme of the album: He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that. The songs he wrote take me places I wouldnt normally go, says Mavis.

Already one of the bestâ€received releases of 2010, Mavis message of joy and redemption has found the setting it has always deserved. Truly, a must-own album that will last you a lifetime.

    Playmates

Fat Possum Records is pleased to announce the release of Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders' upcoming album Playmates. The first taste of the record Come On Back This Way showcases newfound lightness for Ladder, weaving a glistening synth melody with a chorus duet and wordless backing from Sharon Van Etten.

Three years after the acclaimed HURTSVILLE and a move from the inner city of Sydney, Australia to the Blue Mountains, Jack Ladder returns with his new album Playmates. The album is produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, and mixed by David Wrench (Jungle, FKA Twigs, Caribou,Seekae). The Dreamlanders - Kirin J. Callinan (whose own album Embracism was released last year on Terrible / XL) Laurence Pike (of PVT) and Donny Benet - reunite to play on the record, with Sharon Van Etten contributing vocals to two tracks.

Playmates will be Jack Ladder's fourth album, and his first on Fat Possum. His previous two albums (2008's Love Is Gone and 2011's HURTSVILLE) were shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. It's been a long journey to this point, and Playmates finds Jack Ladder at a creative apex, moving on from the darker roads into the curious, bold komische synthesizers which backlight Playmates. Ladder's latest work cogently recalls a time when albums were made to the parameters of the encroaching technology of the compact disc. But this album is where songs take precedence over an idea.

Playmates songs are muscular, raw - yet polished to the texture of a skyscraper. The lyrics themselves are haunting; they possess the poetic slur of a black-pupilled vision of romantic despair, love's unsure footing and a palpable air of Ballardian discord beneath the surface. The songs pulse with life. Synthesizers and drum machines rub shoulders with glam guitars and pedal steel, while above all, Ladder's granite baritone slashes at love and darkness like a heavy blade. He is a tender, persistent lover; a despairing prince at the battlements.

There is also the notable presence of Sharon Van Etten. On working with Jack Ladder, she says, When I first saw Jack Ladder...it blew me away. He's got a darkness to his vocals and lyrics but with a wink. It was really fun and an interesting challenge and his songs are killer. I feel lucky to have been a part of it.

Playmates breadth of ideas, its sinister anxiety-dream lyrics and particular vision of the world offer us as complete a view of this unfathomable Jack Ladder character as we are ever likely to observe in this dimension.

    Lazarus (Original Cast Recording)

Lazarus, the musical presented by the New York Theater Workshop in December 2015 and January 2016, was written by David Bowie and Enda Walsh. The show opened to phenomenal critical acclaim. The New York Times raved Ice-cold bolts of ecstasy shoot like novas through the glamorous muddle and murk of Lazarus, the great-sounding, great-looking and mind-numbing new musical, while Rolling Stone hailed it as a Surrealistic Tour de Force... milk-swimming, lingerie-sniffing, gin-chugging theater at its finest. Lazarus is based on the classic sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. The musical includes both re-worked material from Bowie's iconic catalogue alongside brand new music.

This collection includes the full cast and band of the original New York production with their versions of the David Bowie songs from the show as the Lazarus Cast Album. The album was produced by the show's musical director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on The Next Day and features vocals from actors Michael C. Hall, Sophia Anne Caruso, Cristin Milioti, Michael Esper and other cast members backed by the seven-piece house band Hey assembled for the New York run. The album was recorded January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to learn that Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.

The production of Lazarus in New York also timed with the January, 2016 release of the David Bowie's final studio album . Included alongside the cast's interpretations of classics from his canon of material are the three final David Bowie studio recordings. Co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie's album, these last three songs No Plan, Killing A Little Time, When I Met You bring completely new dimensions to their cast counterparts. The original version of Lazarus is also included on the Lazarus Cast Album.

Lazarus is based on the classic sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. The 1976 film starred Bowie himself as a hollow-eyed humanoid alien (this was during Bowie's Thin White Duke phase) who comes to the earth in search of water for his drought-ridden home planet. While Lazarus marked Bowie's first time scoring a stage show, he was no stranger to the world of theatre. His 1979 performance in the Tony-winning The Elephant Man drew rapturous responses from the critics, while of course his myriad musical personas have all had a strong theatrical streak.

Leon Russell was born in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1941. He studied classical piano as a boy and took up trumpet in his teens. Not too many years later, he was on the road as a sideman to Jerry Lee Lewis and Ronnie Hawkins and ended-up on the west coast.

Leon remained in Los Angeles and quickly became one of the city's more prominent studio musicians also often working as an arranger, conductor and producer. Russell was one of Phil Spector's, "Wall of Sound" session people, he also played on The Byrds', "Mr. Tambourine Man," and arranged and co-wrote most of the big hits of pop star, Gary Lewis including She's Just My Style" and "Everybody Loves a Clown."

Leon Russell gained a higher public profile when the 1969 Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett album, "Accept No Substitute" became a major hit. Leon had arranged the album and played piano and guitar in his now distinctive style that became such a part of the sound of the group called Delaney & Bonnie and Friends.

Russell really skyrocketed when he got involved with Joe Cocker who was already a star. Cocker's producer, Denny Cordell hired Leon to arrange and co-produce the new Cocker album which included more hits for Joe including Leon's song, "Delta Lady." When Cocker set out to tour the US he logically recruited Leon to serve as bandleader and arranger for the now legendary 1970 "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. That renowned cross-country tour has been preserved as a feature film and live album.

Following the critical success of the tour, Russell's reputation was strong enough that he and Cordell formed their own record company - Shelter - and launched the label with this very Leon Russell, "Leon Russell" album. The album features the first ever recording of "A Song For You" which has become one of Russell's best-known songs with versions released over the years by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Elkie Brooks, Amy Winehouse, Donny Hathaway and Christina Aguilera.

The rest, as they say, is history for Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011 followed a few months later with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

    In Flight (Pure Pleasure)

Simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, George Benson is an amazingly versatile musician, whose adept skills find him crossing easily between straight-ahead jazz, smooth jazz, and contemporary R&B. Blessed with supreme taste, a beautiful, rounded guitar tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing, Benson's inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, but his style is completely his own. Not only can he play lead brilliantly, he is also one of the best rhythm guitarists around, supportive to soloists and a dangerous swinger, particularly in a soul-jazz format.

Yet Benson can also sing in a lush, soulful tenor with mannerisms similar to those of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, and it is his voice that has proven more marketable to the public than his guitar. Benson is the guitar-playing equivalent of Nat King Cole - a fantastic pianist whose smooth way with a pop vocal eventually eclipsed his instrumental prowess in the marketplace - but unlike Cole, Benson has been granted enough time after his fling with the pop charts to reaffirm his jazz guitar credentials, which he still does at his concerts.

In the wake of This Masquerade, the balance of power shifted for the first time toward George Benson's suddenly marketable voice; four of the six tracks on In Flight are vocals. By this time, Benson was tailoring his tenor toward soulful pitch-bending à la Stevie Wonder on tunes as diverse as Nature Boy and The World Is a Ghetto, and the unison scatting with the guitar that caught fire with the public on Masquerade is now pulled out whenever possible. Benson's backing band from Breezin', still set in its funk mode, is intact, and Claus Ogerman again contributes gentle orchestral cushions. The two instrumentals, particularly Donny Hathaway's Valdez in the Country, prove that Benson remained a brilliantly inventive melodist on guitar, in full possession of his powers. Yet there is every indication here that Benson was set upon becoming primarily a pop star.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Body Talk (Speakers Corner)

Just listen to the first thirty seconds of this LP and you know that it's all about the 'Godfather of Soul' - the unique James Brown.

But it's just as obvious that such a great artist as George Benson doesn't just present "Greatest Hits" in a new guise. Six of his own compositions plus one by Donny Hathaway/Gene McDaniels provide the guitarist and singer with a great platform to launch from. He shoots off into orbit, accompanied by first-class guest soloists such as Jon Faddis, Frank Foster, Earl Klugh and Jack DeJohnnette. Ron Carter's bass doesn't boom in the low register but offers a light and airy, yet solid, base.

Body Talk is by no means the declaration of a world-shaking, new and avant-garde jazz. It is, however, a successful blend of jazz, soul and fusion. And when such a superb arranger as Pee Wee Ellis has his finger in the pie - or rather: his pen on the manuscript paper - then one can be sure that the almost 50-minute-long LP is a great success from beginning to end. Finally, one shouldn't forget the helping hand of the producer Creed Taylor, who made a significant contribution to this milestone on the CTI label.

    We Move

Written in constant transition - and recorded between Toronto, Dublin and London - 'We Move' is James Vincent McMorrow's most expansive, generous and ambitious record to date. There is, on the other hand, something more stripped-back - vulnerable, even - surfacing for the first time: far from the dense, protective imagery at the heart of 'Post Tropical', 'We Move' is ultimately a record open in its portrait of anxiety and social unease. For McMorrow, it's about celebrating mental fragility - and how we move forward in life - rather than "people listening to my songs and believing that I'm out in the forest all day long, thinking about trees. Because I'm actually at home, trying to convince myself to go out and get milk."

The first steps to 'We Move' took place in 2014, when James - having been asked to write for different artists' projects - started sketching out ideas for others on tour (and subsequently stopped over-analysing his own work). Intent on doing the opposite of everything he'd done thus far, McMorrow then came off the road, but kept exploring: first through Barcelona, then Canada, and stopping in Los Angeles for six particularly fish-out-of-water months, where the songs for the album crystallised. He returned to Dublin determined not to just produce another album himself, but to work with people who could articulate the unique world he heard in his head ("I grew up wanting to write songs like Neil Young but produce them like The Neptunes"). And so James reached out to a few key co-producers he'd met whilst travelling, who formed the backbone of 'We Move': namely, Nineteen85 (Drake, DVSN), Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Years & Years), and Frank Dukes (Kanye West, Rihanna). Mixing took place largely in Miami with one of McMorrow's all-time heroes, Jimmy Douglass - known for his work from Donny Hathaway through to Timbaland - who finessed the record's warm, vintage yet forward-thinking feel.

The result is an album about movement - geographically, mentally, emotionally - which remains focused on finding your place in that future. First track 'Rising Water' is starkly-produced and skyscraper-sized in its sense of catharsis ("I never once was sad for what I've done"): 'Evil', meanwhile, questions whether you might in fact be a bad person, because you don't see life the way other people do (its tone is celebratory rather than ominous, however). Heavier still is 'I Lie Awake Every Night', which sees James address for the first time the eating disorder he has battled since he was a child ("it's about lying in hospital when I was a kid, thinking I shouldn't be there, and trying to reconcile those two things"). 'We Move' reacts against McMorrow's instincts to obscure ideas such as this, and ultimately embraces a shared, collective awkwardness, and the idea that maybe we're all putting on a brave face in some way.

Beginning with Rising Water, 'We Move' continues a remarkable journey for the Dublin-born singer and songwriter, whose early work offered little clue as to the sounds and situations that would follow. It's a remarkably assured collection, informed by this idea that you might not have to listen to others when they tell you how they think life is supposed to go; and that as you grow up, you lose things along the way. Rather, 'We Move' suggests it's possible to keep what you want to keep, and lose what you want to lose.
