    Terrestrials (Awaiting Repress)

Thick Stock Cardboard Stoughton Style Tip On Jacket

    180 Gram Vinyl

    Limited To 3,000

Four figures stand atop a summit, staring east out over a vast, frostbitten wasteland, the black sun dwindling in the west, casting their shadows across the plain. They await another clan, legendary for their slow approach. Eyes on the horizon, searching, patiently, for some signal of the arrival, some plume of smoke that would announce that the time had come. At last, at the edge of the plane, they note a black banner, and soon two hooded figures appear in the dusk. A horn sounds, and drumbeats echo through the valley.

It's only the threshold of the distant horizon that limits the scope of Terrestrials, but like much of Earth, its landscape is arid, only disclosing its secrets upon active contemplation of its component dust. From the opening strains, hidden at the foot of a vertiginous crescendo from zero decibels, the album recalls a technique of Andrei Tarkovsky's, later developed in the films of BÉla Tarr. The eight-and-a-half-minute opening shot in Tarr's epic Sátántangó laterally tracks cattle carefully plodding through a dilapidated commune in search of food from muddy pasture. As the audience investigates the frame for clues to Tarr's purpose, he slowly reveals to them a symbolic vision of the film as a whole, inviting contemplation of the rich surfaces of the decayed buildings and the labyrinthine entrapment of the commune's inhabitant kine, some playing at leadership and some dragging their feet, cow and human alike awaiting deliverance by a dark messiah. Terrestrials proceeds in a remarkably similar fashion. As each track unfurls, its glacial pace arrests the listener's search for novelty, forcing attention to the profundities of the mix and the texture that the interlaced sounds create; and yet it also deepens the desire for what each step forward promises, the crisis that the procession patiently unveils.

Terrestrials features more complex instrumentation than most of the works of either party. Sunn O)))'s deep bass and endlessly sustained guitar feature heavily on each track of Terrestrials, but so do Ulver's electronics and a myriad of additions, including trumpets, didgeridoo, and strings. Although the tracks apparently began as a set of improvisations recorded at Ulver's Oslo studio, the vast scope of the release clearly evolved out of the various mixing and arrangement sessions helmed by Ulver's Kristoffer Rygg and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley between 2008 and 2012. Here they achieved a synthesis that stylistically transcends the mere combination of the two groups and their traditional pathways, with Ulver sealing up the cracks of Sunn O)))'s immense backdrop and heightening the atmosphere with tense strings, sculpted textures, and insistent rhythm. It's this attention to the subtleties that renders Terrestrials monolithic; they ensure that each tick of the clock yields an array of sonic qualities, each progressing slowly in themselves but together moving the whole mass of sound forth at a constant click.

From the trumpets on "Let There Be Light" to the drum-like pound of the bass and didgeridoo in "Western Horn," Terrestrials relentlessly heralds its own arrival, an endless parade slouching towards Bethlehem. By the time Rygg's vocals enter at the middle of "Eternal Return," the crawling pace of the album has ensured their sublimity. Taken on its own, this short section would scarcely justify a song unto itself; it emerges out of the sudden but carefully orchestrated resolution of the murky depths of the track's recesses, manifesting as a piercing clarity and a distillation of the album's theme of annunciation. Its lyrics, rich in spite of their brevity, conceal a messianic yearning in the fallow desert, a hope for deliverance from the stasis of the Egyptian yoke and the confusion of exile, and a dark prophecy of a "liminal animal" with "golden nature" of the sinful calf. Rygg urges us to "listen silent."

Gongs or guitars ring out. This final stage of Terrestrials heralds a return of an immense mystery. What approaches, its lumbering gait constantly pressing onward, can't divulge its nature until it finally arrives. The quintessential figure of doom is an immense behemoth, a force of nature whose sublime shadow conceals it from view even as its thundering steps reveal its impending advent. But here we lie in wait. Terrestrials delivers on its persistent promise by offering another transcendental promise of a future culmination. But the restraint they exert in their advance to the beautiful oasis at the center of "Eternal Return" suggests that, here, Sunn O))) and Ulver are more interested in the process as it happens through time, tracking the march of the sun across the heavens, marking each moment as it slips back into eternity.

    Operation: Doomsday (Silver Age Set)

This special edition 2xLP package comes housed in an all new exclusive jacket featuring DOOM's
infamous metal mask icon embossed out of a metallic silver foil.

Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF Doom hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD's 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was turfed by Elektra in 1994 and Subroc (one half of the sibling rhyme duo) passed away, surviving KMD member Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom. The Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, Rhymes Like Dimes, Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' Doomsday features female vocalist Pebbles the Invisible accompanying the masked rhyme avenger on his journey to denounce wack MCs, while on ? he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on Tick, Tick... where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, many of which include snippets of dialogue from Marvel's Dr. Doom series, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial Rap universe, Operation Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy.

    Generation Doom

Formed from the poetic marrow of creative intercourse. Otep is an art project/band/movement/revolution; Breaking ground, breaking rules, breaking barriers. Articulate. Aggressive. Pure Adrenaline. ARTCore of Heavy Mental Rock." This is how mastermind / vocalist Otep Shamaya and her allies choose to describe themselves in rather peculiar fashion - more than fitting for a peculiar band! Transcending from darkness into the light, Otep want to pose a spiritual force, inspiration and motivation, and yet they don`t forget the essence of it all in the midst of their battle against injustice: rock. The Californians unleash a fascinatingly meandering beast in shape of "Generation Doom" boasting thunderous nu-metal grooves that shapeshift into dark industrial fury that flow into hard rock melodies at any moment. House Of Doom

It only takes a few short bars of the title track 'House Of Doom' to feel that familiar
sensation again: yes, Leif Edling aka the undisputed king of minor key songwriting has
returned. With him, he brings frenzied riffing, melancholy made sound and warm Hammond
organ tapestries that form the pillars of every Candlemass classic! The band is back on
top form with this killer doom epic. The House Of Doom EP comes with 3 bonus tracks,
raw and in your face: The brooding monster of a track 'Flowers Of Deception' indulges
in unadulterated doom heaviness, while the second half of the EP features the stripped-down
ballad 'Fortuneteller' and the wraps up with the almost sludgy 'Dolls On A Wall'. The
Swedish pioneers of timeless slowness managed once again to distill the essence of epic
doom metal on House Of Doom - and at the same time they make waiting for the next

    With Doom We Come

Ever since the release of their debut album Lugburz (1995) SUMMONING have proven themselves to be the true guardians of Middle Earth! What started out as a project deeply rooted in traditional black metal took an epic turn in the following years - evergreens like Dol Guldur (1996) and Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (2001) bear witness to a continuously refined soundscape. Five years after Old Mornings Dawn, Protector and Silenius have turned over a new leaf in their bottomless saga.

Over eight tracks, With Doom We Come indulges all things sublime and majestic, while grandiose keyboard backgrounds and mystical intros weave pure atmosphere contrasting with raw black metal. Opener 'Tar-Calion' is a fitting ode to the last king of the island of Númenor, while 'Carcharoth' tells the bloodthirsty tale of Arda`s mightiest wolf. Sagas and myths culled from J.R.R. Tolkien`s vast universe are the black blood that courses through SUMMONING`s veins, and With Doom We Come the ultimate soundtrack to a fantastic journey!

Now Impending Doom arise once again from where they began, their own alpha and omega as a band, crafting the sixth album as punishing, focused, bottom-heavy, and musically blood-soaked as the earliest efforts that first won them notice before any notions of commerce beckoned them toward the more commonplace career path of the metal music industry. They've worked with top-tier genre producers in the past, including Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Queensrÿche) and Will Putney (Every Time I Die, The Amity Affliction, Thy Art Is Murder), but for album number six, they've returned to the grassroots and hands-on way they engineered and produced their earliest recordings, cloaking it in grimy sonic mysteries anew. Christopher Eck, who produced their first album, oversaw the proceedings once again. This is musical blunt force trauma, from a personal place of desperate salvation and resolve. No competition, no compromise, no careerism. Impending Doom are renewed, purer than ever, united in their collective vision to create the heaviest metal missives imaginable.

In 2008, Tom Waits launched a soldâ€out national tour, garnering intense critical praise and thrilling fans across the country and the world, some in cities where he had never performed before. Now comes the document of those concerts, 17 performances handâ€picked by Waits from along the tour. Leaning heavily on songs from his ANTI-releases including a haunting Trampled Rose from Real Gone and a roaring Get Behind the Mule from Mule Variations, Waits also digs into the vaults for tracks like a re-imagined Singapore from 1985s Rain Dogs. Glitter and Doom Live will reside in the Waits catalog alongside earlier live albums like Nighthawks at the Diner and Big Time.

The genius of Lousy with Sylvianbriar is that it was created on a 24-track tape machine without the crutch of computer aided pitch correction, effects plug-ins and editing capabilities. With no computer tricks to fall back on, Kevin Barnes and the band
recorded most of the songs live in the same room together.

"I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals Barnes. "I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered.

Titled Doomed To Destroy, Destined To Die and tracked by Converge studio wizard Kurt Ballou, Ramming Speed's second will catapult them from cult, from-the-corner thrash act to recognized purveyors of NWOBHM/grind hybrid. "After 20 years, Novembers Doom have become masters of their domain
and are set to deliver their 9th album; a melodic masterpiece of dark metal"

Cited as one of the earliest US death/doom metal bands, Novembers Doom entered the recording studio this year for
their 9th full length album 'Bled White' scheduled for July 15th release via The End Records. Ever since their humble
beginnings in 1989, the band has striven to create their own unique brand of dark, brooding and melancholic metal
music. Constantly evolving and pushing the restrictions of minor genre tags, November's Doom has created a
unique and identifiable sound, making their mark in the metal world. The band continues to grow and thrive with
plans to tour the US and Europe this year in support of their new studio release.

Formed in 1989, this release marks the band's 28th anniversary year and is a sonic testament to their legacy as one of the earliest U.S. dark & doom metal bands still active today.

Considered by the band to be their best work to date, Harmartia's mastery is due in part to the synergy of its lineup, who constituted their previous album Bled White: Paul Kuhr (founder/vocalist), Larry Roberts (guitars), Vito Marchese (guitars), Mike Feldman (bass), and Garry Naples (drums).

Recorded at Belle City Sound in Racine, WI, this album sees production from long-time Novembers Doom producer Chris Djuricic (Jungle Rot, Malevolence), and Mix Master metal legend Dan Swano (Opeth, Dissection, Katatonia).

    Parts Of Speech (Awaiting Repress)

From its first track, Dessa's new full-length Parts of Speech announces itself as something different. The Doomtree veteran and inveterate wordsmith - having proved her mettle in the fields of creative non-fiction, spoken-word and hip-hop - jettisons all genre expectations on "The Man I Knew" and croons a heartbreaking lament to a disintegrating relationship at an explosively-building clip.

From this moment on Dessa - oft-described as "Mos Def plus Dorothy Parker" for the wit and flow shown off on previous solo albums A Badly Broken Code and Castor, The Twin - proves she has truly coalesced as an artist, transcending the restrictions of genre to reveal an astonishing multi-platform voice.

"I wanted to investigate the idea that a cohesive record isn't always made cohesive by having twelve songs that sound the same. I figured when you make a mixtape for a friend, you can get away with a range of genres and a lot of dynamic change. Why can't I approach an album like that? The sequence has to be just right, and we worked hard to nail it, but the thing that holds this record together is the sensibility of the lyrics, rather than a uniform theme."

Track two kicks off a stunning hat-trick of the record's standout numbers. "Call Off Your Ghost" is an admittedly haunting dirge on the "struggle for grace in the wake of a long relationship." An arena-sized chorus tucked into a melancholy lullaby, "Ghost" has that unique ability to perfectly soundtrack new love or bitter breakup at the same time.

Dessa then puts her fists up for "Warsaw." The track boasts a beat like Azealia Banks playing Pacman, which provides a background for our emcee's confident, hypnotic flow. Narrative takes a backseat to mood here, as Dessa spits impressionistic one-ups like "I sleep with both eyes open, standing up," daring you to blink first.

"Skeleton Key" contains Parts of Speech's mission statement: "I haven't met a locked door yet." An ode to female self-reliance that doesn't waste ambiance for message, the track plays like a great, lost M. Night Shyamalan movie, calling forth an era out of time in the story of a woman, a key and a bottomless reserve of courage.

"This record involves multiple narratives. It explores the same themes of love, loss, connection and communion as a lot of my work, but the angle and lens through which they're explored sets this album apart from my previous ones. The production techniques were new for me too - we spent a lot of time crafting a record that could include live players, Doomtree production, and sometimes a blend of the two."

While the album is born of Dessa's artistic vision, it benefits from the collaboration of her varied friends. Parts of Speech owes much of its impact to its diverse production. Dessa got her start as a member of Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree - eventually going on to help manage the group's business affairs as they launched their own label - and members Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger lend their production to several tracks.

The players in Dessa's live ensemble all contributed to the record, as did several top-flight Minneapolis musicians working in rock, folk, and opera. She even enlisted a cellist she found on Pandora to make the gorgeously-layered foundation of penultimate track "It's Only Me."

    Emanations

Emanations is the sophomore album from NYC doom super group SERPENTINE PATH. The band's 2012 self-titled debut was a boldly grim statement of unforgiving misanthropy that referenced both the filthy riffs of Autopsy and the stoney doom of Sleep. Now officially augmented by second guitarist Stephen Flam, the mastermind behind NYC doom/death legends Winter, SERPENTINE PATH are truly a heavy metal all-star team (the band also features current and former members of doom legends Electric Wizard, Unearthly Trance and Ramesses). Sure, the pedigree is undeniable, but regardless of their 'members of' status, SERPENTINE PATH are one of the heaviest bands on the planet today!

WINDHAND'S debut Relapse full length is nothing short of transcendent. On its surface it is a top 5 of all time doom record, but this record is for more than just doom-metal fanatics though-this is an epic record for all fans of guitar driven rock and roll. On Soma WINDHAND successfully make syrupy slow, downtuned doom hooky and anthemic. Propelled by singer Dorthia Cottrell's beautifully haunting bellow, WINDHAND's dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of Black Sabbath and Nirvana. An easy candidate for heavy music record of the year.

    Oblique To All Paths

CULTED's story is a unique one: 4 band members spread out over multiple countries and continents, having never performed music together in the same room coming together through the wonders of modern technology to create totally compelling top of the line doom. While CULTED's writing and recording process may be unusual, and a story unto itself, it certainly should not overshadow what this band has accomplished---creating a bleak and epic masterpiece of dystopian doom. Cinematic in its scope, 'Oblique To All Paths' is a beautifully haunting and grim piece of sprawling doom metal-the perfect soundtrack to a desolate, barren winter.

    Mass & Volume

Recorded during the final hours of the sessions for the 'Phantom Limb' lp (Decibel Magazine's #1 record of 2007) 'Mass & Volume' finds Pig Destroyer's typically break neck speed virtually come to a grinding halt. 2 epic songs of crushing doom prove that Pig Destroyer cannot only dominate all other wickedly fast grind bands, but that when Pig Destroyer does slow, they do slow better than anyone else out there. If Pig Destroyer were to completely change gears and become a full time doom band, they would be the best doom band in the world. Until then we all have 'Mass & Volume' to hold us over.
