    Nola

NOLA was written mainly by Phil Anselmo and Pepper Keenan between 1990 and 1995. Throughout 1991 to 1993 the band released three demos, a three-track demo (1991), a four-track demo (1992) and a ten-track demo (1993). Originally the band made the three-track demo for underground trading. The demo featured the tracks Losing All, Temptations Wings and Bury Me in Smoke. In an effort to build a fan base, the band would ask heavy metal fans if they had ever heard of this band, Down and hand them copies of the tape without telling the person that they were in the band. In 1992 the band recorded a second demo, this time featuring the same track listing as the original but with an intro. In 1993 the band made the Demo Collection 1992 - 1993 which is a ten-track demo featuring all the songs that would make the album cut except Rehab, Pray for the Locust and Underneath Everything. Anselmo solely wrote only three songs on the album (Hail the Leaf, Pray for the Locust and Pillars of Eternity). Eventually, the original demo tape was distributed throughout the United States and Down played a small concert in its home town. A record executive from Elektra Records was attending the show. When he found out who the members of the band were, he signed Down to a recording contract. The band began recording the album in the summer of 1994 at the Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana and completed the recording sessions by January 1995.

Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow

This was Down's first album in seven years since the release of NOLA, the longest gap between the band's Four studio albums to date. Since Down was a supergroup, the band went on hiatus in 1996 so that members could focus on their main bands (namely Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera). Down reformed in 1999 with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Todd Strange. The band wanted the album to have a bluesy feel, so they moved into Phil Anselmo's barn, dubbed Nödferatu's Lair, in southern Louisiana where they lived and recorded the album in 28 days without anyone leaving the house.

    Down IV Part II

With a collective resume encompassing Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, and Eyehategod, the quintet puffed out its
first haze of sonic smoke from the belly of gritty old New Orleans on the 1995 platinum-selling classic, Nola. At that
moment, they naturally summoned something akin to a ritual, continually partaking in it with critically revered
offerings-Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow in 2002, Down III: Over the Under in 2007, and Down IV - Part One
in 2012. Their shows built a certain live lore with unforgettable runs alongside Metallica and Heaven & Hell as well as
coveted spots on Download, Soundwave, and OZZfest. On 2014's Down IV - Part Two [Available via Down Records/
ADA-Music], the boys once again deliver passionate, powerful, and pure heavy music.

    Upside Down Mountain

Though only 34, Conor Oberst has been a recording artist for more than two decades, starting with raw, acoustic guitar-based bedroom tracks he cut as a young teenager and initially released on cassette. After his early Omaha-based band Commander Venus broke up, Oberst recast himself as Bright Eyes, an umbrella name for Oberst, producer-keyboardist Mike Mogis and multi-instrumentalist/arranger Nathaniel Wolcott, and a shifting group of collaborators. By the time he released Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground on Saddle Creek, the label he helped found with friends in Omaha, Oberst was a word-of-mouth success, with an avid young audience that helped to sell out his tours. The critics soon followed. Rolling Stone called him "a true American original: the ghost of Walt Whitman setting up shop in the wraith-white, rail-thin frame of an acoustic-strumming Nebraska Cure fan." The 2005 simultaneous release of two markedly different Bright Eyes albums-the more singer-songwriter-oriented I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the darker, computerized Digital Ash in a Digital Urn-displayed the breadth of his talent. Time Magazine listed I'm Wide Awake among its top 10 albums of the year. Since then, Bright Eyes has continued to evolve, its lineup morphing with each successive tour. While supporting his 2007 Cassadaga album, Oberst took over New York City's Town Hall for a week of sold-out shows, with his large, string-augmented ensemble outfitted spectacularly in white suits. He's also recorded and toured with Mogis, Jim James, and M. Ward as Monsters of Folk as well as with his own Mystic Valley Band. For the first leg of his summer 2014 tour, he's bringing along Wilson's other pals, the Southern Californian quartet Dawes as his support act and backing band.

"I feel lucky that I have been able to do this for as longs as I have," declares Oberst. "I've seen so many talented friends come and go, for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes they stop making music because they can't pay the bills or they lose the passion for it. At this point it is my life. I don't know another way to live. There is something fundamental in myself; I have to be this way. It completes what I am."

Upside Down Mountain features many other friends of Oberst's, including producer Jonathan Wilson, engineer Andy LeMaster, bassist Macey Taylor, multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills, and the Swedish sibling folk-rock vocal duo First Aid Kit. What started as exploratory demos with producer-musician Jonathan Wilson at his Fivestar Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, in a home Wilson rents from Oberst, became the first de facto album sessions. Returning to his native Omaha, Nebraska, Oberst kept rolling with the help of frequent collaborator, engineer, and friend Andy LeMaster at his own ARC Studios. Even more tracking followed in Omaha last November and December. Then Oberst and Wilson moved south to Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

"This is a return to an earlier way I wrote," Oberst says of the songs on Upside Down Mountain. "It's more intimate or personal, if you will. Even if all my songs come from the same place, you make different aesthetic decisions along the way. For me, language is a huge part of why I make music. I'm not the greatest guitar player or piano player-I'm not the greatest singer, either-but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I'm proud of, then that's what I bring to the table. That's why I'm able to do this."

Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme are sharing some sexy Eagles of Death Metal news, including release plans for their fourth album, ZIPPER DOWN, EODM's first new studio release since 2008. Currently on tour in Europe, the dynamic duo is also revealing EODM's extensive tour plans for North America and Europe, and announcing an upcoming VICE-produced documentary film about the charismatic Hughes (AKA "Boots Electric").

EODM was formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California by best friends Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme. Despite their band name, EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal) is not a death metal band. The story goes that a friend was introducing Joshua Homme to the death metal genre, and Homme wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. With that, EODM was born.

    Down

Remastered From Original Tapes by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

By the time The Jesus Lizard released Down in 1994, alt-rock had long exploded and penetrated the commercial mainstream. Despite being a hair more subdued than the noise-rock band's previous releases, the still-manic Down didn't break through, but unlike most releases of the time, it didn't compromise either. The Jesus Lizard's final studio album for Touch & Go and last record produced by Steve Albini, it's also the last essential statement the band put down on tape. And it's never sounded better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Down has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Down in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified midrange, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefiting from Albini's dry, spare, and no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, blunt, or fervent.

Vinyl packaged in deluxe gatefold album jacket with 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

    Sun Down

Nik Freitas' Team Love debut, Sun Down, equal parts wry, warm and sonorous, is the end product of several years of lifeÆs ups and downs. Freitas writes, plays, engineers and produces every note on his records. Not that he's got a lot of expensive gear. A visit to his Poppy Peak studio/shed reveals that Nik is working low-budget minor miracles, the kind of miracles one receives via hundreds of hours on Craigslist. One listen to Sun Down and you know you're hearing a certain hard-won grace. The record takes you from Paul Simon's Graceland to David Bowie's Hunky Dory all in the span of forty effortless minutes. Sun Down is endowed with a sort of gravity and self-possession; no reaching, no going for the gold, just perfect, four minute thesis statements. It all began several years ago for Freitas, when a co-worker sold him an antique piano that was used by a street musician before the dawn of Casio. Nik taught himself how to play the thing, and it became the cornerstone of three earlier records, Here's Laughing at You, Heavy Mellow and Voicing the Hammers. Other people began to take notice. He's opened for Jason Lytle of Granddaddy, played guitar for Jim Fairchild of All Smiles and recorded with Miles Kurosky of Beulah. Lately, he's been opening shows for Bright Eyes which led him to his current resting place at Team Love. The end of the imaginary side one features Sophie with live horns punctuating the tale of a girl who seems to have made some rather unfortunate choices. It's a perfect signpost of a song, and it clears the decks for what's to come in the second half, where Nik's orchestra of one builds the final five songs into an Abbey Road type suite that fans of Jon Brion will hearken to. Sun Down is imbued with a sort of indie grandeur that is both unexpected and totally natural.

    Upside Down

Upside Down and Zombie, both released in 1976, were made at the mid-point of an extraordinary three-year purple period during which Fela recorded 24 albums of new material. Upside Down is unusual in that it includes a second lead vocalist, Fela's American friend Sandra Izsadore, who he'd known since touring the US in 1969. Fela went through some important changes during the tour. The most far-reaching of these followed his befriending of Izsadore, a black rights activist who introduced him to the writings of Malcolm X, Angela Davis, Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael, Huey Newton and other revolutionary thinkers. Fela later credited Izsadore with helping inspire his philosophy of Blackism. Izsadore was one of two women who played key roles in firing Fela's political awareness. The other was his mother, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. A friend of independent Ghana's founding president, Kwame Nkrumah, she had been an early champion of Nigerian women's rights and a prominent campaigner for Nigerian independence. In 1970, Izsadore stayed with Fela in Nigeria for six months, and returned for a shorter visit in 1976, when she sang on the title track of Upside Down. Izsadore is a competent vocalist, but, her presence aside, the main interest is in the lyrics, in which Fela observes that much in Nigerian civic society is a shambles: "head for down, yansch for up" (head down, arse up). "Go Slow" was one of several songs Fela recorded which critiqued the consequences of over-rapid urbanization - in this case, traffic jams - using them as a metaphor to describe deeper social breakdowns.

    Locked Down

Storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) releases Locked Down, a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. The new album, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, is Dr. John's first for Nonesuch Records.

Its an entirely new approach for the iconic Dr. John, featuring as it does his collaboration with Auerbach and a band of young musicians Auerbach hand-picked to make Locked Down at his studio Easy Eye Sound in Nashville. It was way cool cutting this record with Dan and the crew he put together for it, says Rebennack. It's reel HIP.

For his part, Auerbach says about the collaboration: Mac inspired me every single day we were in the studio together: musically, spiritually, cosmically, something special seemed to be happening and everyone involved could sense it. For my money, Mac's one of the greatest who ever was and who ever will be, I'm so honored to have had this opportunity to work with him.

Auerbach, a long-time fan of the influential musician, dubbed the Night Tripper in the late 60s, visited Dr. John late in 2010 in his hometown of New Orleans, announcing his ambition to produce the best record you've made in a long time. Rebennack replied that he had done his research, his children had told him good things about The Black Keys, and the conversation led to an agreement to collaborate on the 2011 Bonnaroo Jam being curated by Auerbach.

That performance, called by New York Times critic Ben Ratliff in his best-of-the-year list deep and oozy, close-to-the-vest, low-frequency funk, confirmed that something unusual was taking place and led to September recording sessions in Nashville. Dr. John returned to Nashville at Thanksgiving to complete the vocals and Locked Down was mixed by Auerbach and completed in early 2012.

    Everybody Down

There's a strong, vibrant formal tradition in hip hop: the story rhyme. Rather than the bragging and boasting of many raps, in a story rhyme the MC presents a narrative-- a street update of Ovid or Homer if you want to get hifalutin about it. Traced back by some to The Message by Melle Mel, few would dispute that it reached some sort of a peak with Slick Rick's first album, and was carried forward by the likes of Biggie and Eminem. It also had a profound influence on rap in the UK, with artists like Roots Manuva using the form to represent themselves and their city in a myriad of new ways.

    She Shot Me Down

She Shot Me Down is Frank Sinatra's last great album, a dark, brooding record of saloon songs delivered with an understated authority by Sinatra. Arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins and produced by Don Costa, the record largely consists of contemporary material, including five that were basically tailored for Sinatra. It's a dense, moody record that works spectacularly -- Sinatra's vocals are more alive and rich in detail than on Trilogy, and the concept is more concise and well-executed. She Shot Me Down might not consist of the classic saloon songs, but it has that feeling more than any of his other albums.

    Sun Coming Down

Ought returns with their second full-length album Sun Coming Down, following a break-out year for the MontrÉal quartet that saw its 2014 debut More Than Any Other Day make well-deserved waves, with a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork and appearances on countless year-end lists. Having spent most of 2014 on the road vitalizing audiences with no-nonsense post-punk and the feverishly observational testifying of singer/guitarist Tim Darcy, Ought spent the first few months of 2015 writing, playing the occasional local gig, and eventually heading back to the studio to lay down a batch of fresh tunes. Sun Coming Down maintains the band's tight, twitchy, economical sound. Ought pursues an artistically apposite austerity in committing these new songs to tape, referencing the arid and unvarnished production of no-wave and early indie rock while balancing carved-out angularity against an evolving comfort with textural coalescences and measured pacing. It makes for an album that's consistently, insistently propulsive but also feels unhurried and pleasantly unhyped. Sun Coming Down confirms the distinctive vitality and purposive naturalism of Ought, which resists facile primitivism and overhyped dynamics in equal measure, keeping things hermetic but never airless, ascetic but never dispassionate, literate but never prolix.
