    Apocalypse, girl

Think big, girl, like a king, think kingsize. Jenny Hval's new record opens with a
quote from the Danish poet Mette Moestrup, and continues towards the abyss.
Apocalypse, girl is a hallucinatory narrative that exists somewhere between fiction
and reality, a post-op fever dream, a colorful timelapse of death and rebirth,
close-ups of impossible bodies - all told through the language of transgressive
    pop music.

When Norwegian noise legend Lasse Marhaug interviewed Jenny Hval for his
fanzine in early 2014, they started talking about movies, and the conversation
was so interesting that she asked him to produce her next record. It turned out
that talking about film was a great jumping off point for album production.
Hval's songs slowly expanded from solo computer loops and vocal edits to contributions
from bandmates Håvard Volden and Kyrre Laastad, before finally
exploding into collaborations with Øystein Moen (Jaga Jazzist/Puma), Thor
Harris (Swans), improv cellist Okkyung Lee and harpist Rhodri Davis. All of
these musicians have two things in common: they are fierce players with a great
ear for intimacy, and they hear music in the closing of a suitcase as much as in a
    beautiful melody.

And so Apocalypse, girl is a very intimate, very visual beast. It dreams of an old
science fiction movie where gospel choir girls are punks and run the world with
auto-erotic impulses. It's a gentle hum from a doomsday cult, a soft desire for
collective devotion, an ode to the close-up and magnified, unruly desires.
Jenny Hval has developed her own take on intimate sound since the release of
her debut album in 2006. Her work, which includes 2013's critically celebrated
Innocence Is Kinky (Rune Grammofon), has gradually incorporated books, sound
installations and collaborations with poets and visual artists. For Hval, language
is central, always torn between the vulnerable, the explosive and total humiliation.

    Death Song

The Black Angels - Austin's psych rock masters - have confirmed details for their upcoming album, 'Death Song.,' the five-piece's first full-length release in four years.

Written and recorded in large part during the recent election cycle, the music on 'Death Song' serves as part protest, part emotional catharsis in a climate dominated by division, anxiety and unease. "Currency," a strong contender for the heaviest song the band has ever put to wax, meditates on the governing role the monetary system plays in our lives, while slow-building psychedelic earworm "Half Believing" questions the nature and confusing realities of devotion.

Recorded between Seattle and Austin, 'Death Song' features production from Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, The Shins). The 11-track collection offers a sharply honed elaboration on their signature sound - menacing fuzz guitar and cutting wordplay, steeped in a murky hallucinatory dream.

Since forming in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych-rock, and the New York Times has said they "play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it".

The band has toured with Queens of the Stone Age, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Black Keys + more, and played festivals such as Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Primavera, Harvest Fest, Coachella and Bonnaroo. Two of the band members co-founded Levitation Festival (formerly Austin Psych Fest) in 2008, which has since grown into one of the best-reviewed and expertly-curated festivals in the country.

    Doin' It To Death

For starters, this platter begins with one of the great intros of all time: "Ladies and gentlemen, there are seven acknowledged wonders of the
world. You are about to witness the eighth "

Lodged in a deep groove between the JB's' debut LP Food For Thought (1972) and the more complex and at-times political Damn Right, I Am
Somebody (from 1974) sits the ridiculously vampy and infectious classic, Doing It To Death. First moving hips and making heads nod in 1973,
the James Brown-produced, 5-song album is one big funk lick, broken up into many delicious moving parts.

As with pretty much everything produced by the JB's - led by Fred Wesley with heavy help from a supporting cast that included saxophonist
Maceo Parker, guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon "Cheese" Martin and drummer John "Jabo" Starks - all songs began and revolved around
a devastating riff. The title track is most certainly guilty-as-charged, as it starts strutting right out of the gate and continues for just over 10
minutes, driven by a guitar lick and MCed by the inimitable James Brown, with soloists stepping up and out while the song chugs on.

The other centerpiece of the album is the 8-minute "You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight," whose groove is
interestingly teased two times before it arrives in full form. The song title itself is provocative, and the music keeps a stone-cold groove despite
the less than cheery undertones. Again driven by an infectious guitar morsel, the breakdowns in this song gave sampling producers and DJs
sweet dreams in the '80s, and Fred Wesley's trombone solo rides beautifully over the group's cries of "We need some money."

Beyond the aforementioned sure-shots, the twitchy "More Peas," "La Di Da La Di Day" and the much jazzier, solo-heavy "Sucker" round out
this incredible album. It's just another perfect example of how James Brown's funk machine could stop the world when they hit a groove.

    Simple Dreams

Mastered By Doug Sax And Robert Hadley

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Tip-On Gatefold Jacket By Stoughton Printing

One of the most successful albums of Linda Ronstadt's career, Simple Dreams spent five successive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart in late 1977, displacing Fleetwood Mac's Rumours at No. 1 after 29 record-breaking weeks in the pole position. It also knocked Elvis Presley out of No. 1 on Billboard's Country Albums chart after The King held the gridlock for 15 consecutive weeks after his death in August. It won the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package (in addition to several other high profile Grammy nominations).

Simple Dreams was Ronstadt's fifth consecutive million-selling platinum album and sold more than 3½ million copies in less than a year in the United States alone - a record for a female artist. Simply put, Ronstadt just couldn't lose. Simple Dreams continued a creative streak that found the singer turning out album after album of incredible material at an astonishing one-per-year rate until she finally began to come back down to earth in the early 1980s.

Now hear Simple Dreams as never before. Remastered by the late, great Doug Sax at the Mastering Lab, together with Robert Hadley, and pressed on 45 RPM super-silent 200-gram vinyl by Quality Record Pressings, this revered recording truly is a sonic treasure. And it comes in a Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket with meticulously reproduced original artwork. Stunning.

Featuring an expanded palette of styles and cutting-edge narratives, Simple Dreams may go down in history as Ronstadt's greatest work. Considering the achievements: Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female; Five consecutive weeks as the No. 1 record on the Billboard Album Chart, Two Top 10 singles.

Dreaming Is Sinking /// Waking Is Rising

    Pressed On Opaque Pink Vinyl

Southern California's Dayseeker has revealed key details about their new album and Spinefarm Records debut, Dreaming Is Sinking /// Waking Is Rising.

    Frontman Rory Rodriguez told AP:

This song is not only the start of our album, but it's also written for our dear friend who was a victim of sexual assault. This is a huge issue that we wanted to write about, not only to bring to light the trauma a person goes through when this happens but to hopefully offer solace to those same people as well.

    Regarding the album, Rodriguez furthered:

This album is our proudest work to date. From beginning to end, you will hear a full concept album following the journey of a man who has fallen into a deep coma and his long journey to escape the mental prison he finds himself in.

The album operates off an intricate concept: A man avenges the unspeakable crimes committed against his wife only to be bludgeoned into a coma. Locked in a vegetative state, changes erupt throughout his world, spanning the dissolution of his marriage and the death of his estranged mother. While his hospital bed doubles as a front row seat to the chaos, questions arise

Is any of this happening? Is it real? What does it mean?

Some of the answers may or may not be encoded within the 12 tracks comprising Dayseeker's 2017 conceptual third full-length album, Dreaming Is Sinking /// Waking Is Rising. Maintaining an inimitable and infectious intensity, the music represents a marked evolution for the Orange County group.

And lo, Lee Dorrian, mouthpiece of Cathedral for 23 years, doth solemnly intone the death rites of this mighty British metal Titan. Born in the dying days of Thatcher's Britain, bonding over then-unfashionable, obscure names like Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Trouble and Dream Death, Cathedral's sole ambition was to record a demo tape. In fact they revolutionised doom metal, first pushing their influences into new avenues of grinding extremity, then pioneering groovier forms of '70s-indebted stoner doom.

They've remained a reassuring and singular presence in our lives, building a rabid following worldwide with their wholly distinctive blend of rollicking British heavy metal, true doom, 70s hard rock, psych-folk, mad prog and spiky crust-punk. There was a worrying hiatus between 2005 and 2010 when some dared to wonder if Cathedral were coming back at all - but they re-emerged with 'The Guessing Game', an overflowing treasure chest of weird and wonderful goodies exploring new, bold variations on their craft. So when news came that Cathedral really were approaching the Endtyme, it was a shock.

Personally speaking, this is the album I've been waiting to do since the first one (their landmark 1991 debut, Forest of Equilibrium), it almost feels like we made our second album last in some respects. We actually recorded a lot more material but decided to sacrifice many of the tracks to make the overall album feel more complete in its nihilism. I don't like happy endings, I never have. So many good films are ruined by happy endings and I didn't want that to be the case with Cathedral, it was my dream to bring everything full circle. Says Lee Dorrian.

Clearly there was new impetus for reconnecting with that early spirit of doleful abjection, of sinister obsessions and lamented desires; on 'The Last Spire' Cathedral are literally doomed. We are commiserating the celebration, and in what thrilling style.

Box of Souls: A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection

Remastered For Vinyl By James Plotkin

    Original Artwork From Mike Saputo

12-Page Booklet Featuring Extensive Liner Notes And Interviews With Key Composers And Cast Members

Death Waltz Recording Co. is proud to present an 8XLP box set containing the entire original scores to A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD, FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE and WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is one of the most successful and beloved horror franchises in history and we are thrilled and honored to be releasing the entire series as a vinyl box set featuring 8 LPs from the original series, all remastered for vinyl by James Plotkin with incredible original artwork from Mike Saputo and a 12-page booklet featuring extensive liner notes and interviews with key composers and cast members.

The music of Elm Street is a huge part of the series, each film having its own unique sound and feel. Charles Bernstein created the original score, and Freddy's main theme that was used throughout the series. His score to the first film is nothing short of a landmark horror score and utterly defines American horror in the '80s - super downbeat, eerie and metallic. Christopher Young (HELLRAISER) supplied the score to FREDDY'S REVENGE, and takes the themes down a more orchestral route, layering sounds upon sounds to create a truly scary listen. Angelo Badalamenti (TWIN PEAKS) composed the score DREAM WARRIORS. Here he crafts moody textures and a woodwind section to create a dreamlike score that fits the theme of PART 3 perfectly. Craig Safan was bought on to compose THE DREAM MASTER, and with the help of a synth-clavier synthesizer he created one of the craziest horror scores of the '80s. Yeah, sure, it's scary and creepy, but it's also a ton of fun and totally unique. For THE DREAM CHILD, Jay Ferguson delivers a synth-heavy score with nods to fairground music and layers of church organs and weird choral samples. For THE FINAL NIGHTMARE, Australian composer Brian May mixes electronic and orchestrations to stunning effect and for the final film in the series. In NEW NIGHTMARE J. Peter Robinson gives us a super lush orchestrated nightmare that harkens back to Bernstein's original.

    No Love Deep Web

Death Grips shocked the world and their record label when they released their second release of the year No Love Deep Web, but upon listening it's pretty clear that this is a mixtape that the label had no intention of releasing. No Love Deep Web was probably just an elaborate way to hype up the band, and it's safe to say it worked. No Love Deep Web had over 34.2 million downloads on BitTorrent thanks to the help of Twitter, and I think its safe to say their plan worked. Speaking of the album itself, it employs very minimalistic stripped down beats and has a much chiller vibe overall compared to the previous two records. That doesn't mean the beats are soft though, because they are harder than the phallus on the album cover. No Love Deep Web is one big grimy middle finger to the music industry and one of the most sordid albums ever released by a group on a major label.

This isn't your father's hip hop, but that should be common knowledge by now. If you go into this expecting insightful lyrics and smooth flow over catchy beats you're going to have a bad time, hell even if you expect to understand the lyrics most of the time you're going to get very little out of No Love Deep Web. MC Ride is his schizophrenic self on tracks like No Love and World Of Dogs, but he also comes down to earth and actually calms down a bit on tracks like Artificial Death In The West adding a lot more depth to their sound. The whole album feels like the fever dreams of a severely withdrawn drug addict, tracks like World Of Dogs, No Love and Hunger Games sound like a sick drug addicts crash back down to earth and their gritty existence. The line I got some *** to say just for the *** of it perfectly encapsulates not only MC Ride's style, but No Love Deep Web, and Death Grips' whole career.

The beats on this thing are raw and stripped down, some of the tracks don't even have a melody some of the time, just drums and vocals like in Lock Your Doors. The beats are fidgety electronic bells and whistles, lots of interesting sounds and synths creating a gritty atmosphere for MC Ride to spit his insane lyrics over. The rawness and harsh production of the beats help point to the fact that this is a mixtape and not a studio release, the minimalistic approach also creates a fresh sound compared to the over produced and at times gimmicky production on The Money Store, and this approach will likely convert a few people who were not fond of the over the top nature of The Money Store.

No Love Deep Web inevitably sounds a tad rushed, no *** it was made in only a few months, but it definitely did its job as a hype generator. It doesn't do enough different to warrant its early release date and the band's sound is getting a bit tiring. The main problem though is the lack of standout tracks, with most of the hooks gone and with such stripped down beats a lot of the songs blend together in an unflattering way. Exhausting as it can be at times, No Love Deep Web turned out to be another great addition to Death Grips' ever expanding discography that is likely to turn a few heads just as all of their previous work has done.

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes

    Newly Reissued 180 Gram Version

Like the also-great Idaho or Wheat, to file Death Cab for Cutie under the mellow-pop umbrella that shelters tranquil chamber outfits such as Red House Painters, Low, or (post-dance-pop) Talk Talk would do them a gross, miscalculated service. While they're no strangers to the tickling knelling of guitars searching out the extra space found in laggard tempos, that predilection only encompasses a fourth of Death Cab for Cutie's output (like on Title Track and Little Fury Bugs). Heck, they're not even remotely quiet for half of We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes -- the best and brightest LP of their three fine albums to date. Ben Gibbard has turned into a sublime composer, using melodies sparingly but with splendid tunefulness, as all four players marinate his writing with delicately plucked, picked, and pulled arpeggios, ringing chords, and non-obvious atmosphere building. Verily, the slow, broody stuff is but a change of pace; it's when the volume doubles (if only occasionally crashes), when the band shows potency, that We Have the Facts starts flying, soaring with exigency beyond even the threatening storm clouds from the last flight plan, 1998's Something About Airplanes. Lowell, MA and Company Calls are perfect examples: drummer Nathan Good actually gets to punish his snare and toms, the other three dig in with him, and the words indie pop suddenly sounds fresh and alive, with real aggressive, post-dream pop guitar popscapes. Loud and soft, or most of all both, and plenty of points in between, DCFC write and record finished songs that emote, that do more than merely fill a slot in a form in a preconceived genre. In short, they're superb. And getting greater.

    The Photo Album

    Newly Reissued 180 Gram Version

Released in 2000, We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes delivered on the promise of You Can Play These Songs with Chords and Something About Airplanes. For once, a band's popularity grew commensurate with its maturation. Despite the heightened attention, singer/songwriter/guitarist Ben Gibbard next let loose Death Cab for Cutie's finest moment, Photobooth, the lead track on the sparkling Forbidden Love EP. New fans worldwide swooned under its beguiling romantic rise 'n' fall and its lingering, bittersweet, wallet-sized artifact. And though it wouldn't have killed them to include Photobooth here -- for its spotless greatness and thematic likeness -- The Photo Album's ten tracks are of the EP's heightened caliber. Gibbard's words screen intriguing mini-films of the mind, stoked by corresponding daydreamy music. An exquisite liaison of the British penchant for ringing, knelling, subconscious guitars and direct/grittier American drive, the band is tight, evocative, and inventive. Bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Michael Schorr lock in creative rhythmic bases, while Gibbard and Chris Walla's guitar work gives the band climactic, cinematic coloring shades. And, in the end, it's Gibbard's remarkable abilities as a writer and singer that are on display most. Each word draws you in via his sweet, thoughtful guy voice. The solo 1:47 opener, Steadier Footing, is merely a starter course, but it feels like an entrÉe: And this is the chance I never got/To make a move, but we just talk is only one measure of the chances/plans/dreams/connections and relationships that have eluded him or fizzled. Reeled in, one is left to look back over one's own smoldering wreckage, of opportunities or attachments lost -- much as A Movie Script Ending's abrupt turn Passing through unconscious states/When I awoke I was on the highway somehow segues into the couplet With your hands on my shoulders/A meaningless movement, a movie script ending. Like Photobooth, it's a typically sobering, adverse assessment of how unromantic the romanticized can become. That it's a great pop song, arresting in its jerky wobble, is just another point in its, and this LP's, favor. The world needs more superb pop with brains and heart and emotional complexity.

    A Sleep & A Forgetting

Islands new album A Sleep & A Forgetting continues the bands penchant for crafting adventuresome and infectious state of the art pop music. But this time band leader Nick Thorburn has infused the songs with a personal introspection that gives the record a new and powerful emotional resonance. The new album was produced by Thorburn and fellow Islands member Evan Gordon in less than two weeks, and the 11 songs were recorded live with hardly a single overdub. Its a stripped down process and beautifully understated sound which only reinforces the confessional content of the lyrics.

This comes together to striking effect on songs like the darkly dramatic Oh Maria, written in the voice of Buddy Hollys anguished young widow and her reoccurring crash site dreams. She would have these dreams about being in the field where his plane went down,Thorburn says. She would be trying desperately to get past all the bystanders to see him one last time. Its such an evocative story it just stuck with me. And its absolutely consistent with the albums themes of heartbreak, death and dreaming. Far from being selfâ€pitying, A Sleep & A Forgetting powerfully transforms personal unrest into affecting and soulful pop music.

The LP version of A Sleep & A Forgetting comes with a cool and unique hidden track, toward the end of side 2 the album comes to false end with a locking groove of ambient loops. Listeners may then lift the stylus and find a hidden bonus track that closes the LP.

PICTURE DISC REISSUE OF EDGE OF SANITYS FIRST PROPER DEMO ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1990

Edge of Sanity's first proper demo KUR-NU-GI-A was recorded and released in 1990. It sold well beyond any expectations and gave the band a good reputation in the growing Metal underground. After the release of the demo the band signed to Black Mark and within a year the band had their debut album 'Nothing But Death remains' released.

Singer/Producer Dan Swano had this to say about the release:
I always felt we grew up a bit too fast, We got caught up in the growing Death Metal scene and tuned down the guitars and bought the 'right' distortion pedals and tried to be the new Entombed. This demo showcases the original sound of Edge of Sanity. During this period we still listened to a lot of progressive and challenging metal of all kinds and I still believe the songs have their true version on this demo. I transferred the original 4 track cassette masters, using state of the art digital technology, and remixed them and finally gave them the sound I dreamt of giving them 21 years ago. The dream of finally having this classic recording released on 12 picture disc has come true. While digging in the vaults, I found a lot more interesting stuff, so expect more 'post mortem' release from Edge of Sanity.

Nearly half a century after his death at 36, the astonishing saxophonist and flutist Eric Dolphy is still influencing and inspiring the most adventuresome jazz musicians. Dolphy was daring and iconoclastic while fully immersed in the jazz tradition. His musicianship was so thorough that innovators like Charles Mingus and John Coltrane held him in awe. In a dream partnership, Dolphy and trumpeter Booker Little made a handful of recordings in 1960 and '61, shortly before Little's own premature death. The first of them are on this album. Included is the rare Serene, never before issued with the session's other material. With Jaki Byard, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes

From Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Weakerthans' lyrical music speaks of the vast open spaces and broken industrial dreams in which it was created. Founded in 1997, they hold deep roots in the indie scene, and have three albums and over 90,000 sales behind them. On their new release, literary lyrics could stand alongside a Raymond Carver or Russell Banks short story, while the music channels the spirit of punk, alt-country, and barroom rock and folk. Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails (Awaiting Repress)

Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend their two passions with The Baseball Project Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails, an album of buzzing guitars and baseball back stories.

The heroes and villains of America's (in)famous pastime are explored with cutting wit and fanboy detail in songs that satisfy both the summer's need for rock anthems and sweltering afternoon double-headers. Drummer Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck round out the squad, as they spin tales of ill-fated drinking binges (The Yankee Flipper, The Death of Big Ed Delahanty), near mythical icons (Ted Fucking Williams), folk heroes (Fernando, Satchel Paige Said) and on Gratitude (For Curt Flood), the overlooked man who changed the game.

A passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the state of the sport, The Baseball Project provides a hip soundtrack to the backstage party at America's game

Alvvays are two women, three men, a crate of C-86 tapes and a
love of jingle-jangle. Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan grew up
as next-door neighbours in Cape Breton, lifting fiddles and folk-songs. Heartbreaks of different shades soon entered their lives, as
did the music of Teenage Fanclub and Belle & Sebastian. Similar
noisy melancholy drifted over to Prince Edward Island, finding
Alec O'Hanley, Brian Murphy and Philip MacIsaac.

Convening in Toronto, the group have been making music since
since dusk or maybe dawn, when stars were appearing or fading
off. As a result, their debut self-titled album is both sun-splashed
and twilit -- nine songs concealing drunkenness, defeat and death
in tungsten-tinted pop that glitters like sea glass.

With needlepoint melody and verse, Rankin and O'Hanley's songs
were recorded at Chad VanGaalen's Yoko Eno studio and mixed
by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and John Agnello (Sonic Youth,
Dinosaur Jr., kurt Vile). The resultant album is loud and clear and

    Shadows

From the Press Release:I felt very free going into making this album. It was a solo mission, on my terms, my time, my choices, says Lenka. Previously my music was focused on being uplifting and energizing. For this album, I shifted to create a lullaby soundtrack for myself, my child and everyone out there. I have always loved albums that one can fall asleep to; an experience I enjoyed a lot growing up. Those songs drift into your unconscious like no others.

Tracks like Nothing Here But Love, an unbridled paean to the power of love, and After the Winter, a celebration of spring and the hope it holds that features Tracy Bonham on violin, offer a welcome respite from a rattled world. Two Heartbeats is an ethereal slice of life written from the perspective of an unborn child (and features the in utero heartbeat of Lenka's son)
The album has is soothing moments, to be sure, but Shadows also grapples head-on with separation (Faster With You), loss (the heartbreaking Nothing) and the fears that keep young and old awake at night (Monsters). The Shadows are imprints and remnants of the big life stuff happening to me right now, she explains. I have been reflecting a lot as things change around me. Birth, death, love, regrets, innocence, dreams, independence, connection.

Lenka plays a variety of instruments throughout, including keyboards, wurli, glockenspiel and vibraphone, and recorded the album in New York, Montreal, Toronto and her hometown of Sydney.

In Australia, Lenka reunited with Tom Schutzinger, whom she had originally worked with when both were members of acclaimed Australian electronic/ambient band Decoder Ring. Schutzinger produced No Harm Tonight as well as Heart To The Party, a track he and Lenka co-wrote.

After leaving Decoder Ring and moving to the States, Lenka released her self-titled debut album in 2008. It entered Billboard's Heatseekers chart at #3 and contained The Show, a No. 1 single at radio in three countries that has had a very long life. It was the pivotal song in the 2011 film Moneyball and Billy Crystal sang The Show during his opening monologue for the 2012 Oscars. The Show has also been heard in promotional spots for Ugly Betty, Old Navy, Coca-Cola, Apple and Crate & Barrel commercials, and on Dancing With The Stars and Grey's Anatomy.

    Body Faucet

There is no pretense behind the Athens, GA four-piece Reptar (named after a Rugrats character) and consisting of Graham Ulicny (guitar/vocals), William Kennedy (analog keyboards), Ryan Engelberger (bass) and Andrew McFarland (drums). Still, the ability to amuse and arouse their fans is just as important to them as indulging their musical curiosities. This sonic wanderlust extends from African Music to post-punk to psych-pop and converges joyously in songs such as Blastoff and Rainbounce among others.

Their aesthetic percolates even more vibrantly through their debut LP, Body Faucet, to be released on Vagrant Records. A set of shimmering sing-along anthems produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Washed Out), Body Faucet is propelled by jerky guitars and persistent beats. The record feels like a big dream with different chapters, says Ryan. Ghost Bike captures the space between witnessing a friend's death and surviving it. In Sebastian (named after a saint who became a gay icon), it's experiencing, then remembering, a sexual awakening with a close friend.

Lyrics and music flow in a liquid form from real places, each song oozing with a different color and substance. We wanted to capture the thoughts we project on our surroundings and the ideas that flow in and out of us each day, says Graham. Indeed, much of the record deals with exploring and interacting with one's surroundings in new, occasionally frustrating, ways. The album builds with songs such as New House, expressing a future of possibilities. A centerpiece of sorts, notes Andrew, it's the most driving song on the record, and it's really empowering live.

    Unholy Savior

Hailing from the southern edge of Finland, BATTLE BEAST were founded in 2008 and soon established themselves with their trademark of pure crunching riffs, high screams, blistering solos and strong choruses. Taking the best elements of traditional heavy metal, the sextet is never afraid to add its own flavour to the recipe. After winning the 2010 Wacken Open Air "Metal Battle", and shortly after Finland's "Radio Rock Starba" competition, BATTLE BEAST soon caught the attention of Nuclear Blast. The worldwide release of the highly acclaimed debut album "Steel" in January of 2012 and a successful support tour with fellow Finns and label mates NIGHTWISH followed. September 2012 saw the original singer, Nitte Valo, leaving the band, to be replaced by a beautiful new front beast Noora Louhimo as they embarked on a tour with SONATA ARCTICA. With the refreshed line-up and an ever-growing hunger, BATTLE BEAST continued their march of success with their eponymous sophomore release in May 2013.

Following the success of "Battle Beast", charting at an amazing #5 in their native Finland and cracking the German Top 100, the band embarked on an extended European tour alongside German metal band POWERWOLF in late 2013 and then hit the road in Sweden and Norway opening for German metal institution U.D.O. Having spent the year playing headlining shows in their native Finland, as well as invading some of the biggest festivals in 2014 (among them the renowned Loud Park in Japan, German Metalfest and Sabaton Open Air in Falun, Sweden), plus supporting their German labelmates ACCEPT during their Finland tour in September, BATTLE BEAST now return to what they do best: to take it to the next level! "I thirst to go further as a human being and the music on this album represents a part of the ongoing spiritual journey - that's what I tend to I call it - which is my road onward. Music-wise the songs have been expanded to a wider area as an effort to call out emotions close to those I myself had during the times of birth of these songs," commented guitarist & vocalist Anton Kabanen about the upcoming new BATTLE BEAST album. "Unholy Savior" has been influenced by everything the band has been facing during the past months and clearly displays their increased hunger to succeed as a band.

Trying to explain the topics of the third BATTLE BEAST record, one will have to go deeper as the songs lyrics were born through an emotionally violent and bloody struggle, that main composer Anton Kabanen was going through at the time: Questioning his whole existence step by step, wondering if his dream had betrayed him. "Unholy Savior" reeks of death, agony, pain, hate, confusion, fear and insecurity, but it speaks of deep gratitude, longing, consolation and love. "The album had to be done this way - through emotional hell. Having transferred these things and emotions into songs I feel that I'm ready to move on. But like always, I wrote songs about the series Berserk, as well, and the reason behind writing songs about that particular series is that I can strongly relate to that, especially to certain characters and to their way of thinking and feeling," Anton adds. While with their previous album the young Finns did all the recording, producing and mixing themselves, "Unholy Savior" was produced by Anton Kabanen and co-produced by keyboardist Janne Björkroth and mixed by Matias Kupiainen at 5by5 Studios. Mastering was once again done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios and the actual recordings took place at Sound Quest Studio and JKB Studios. "Unholy Savior" will be released on January 09, 2015. On the very same day BATTLE BEAST will return to the European roads, along with the band that has been supporting them since day one. Swedish metal heroes SABATON did not only invite the band to play at their very own Sabaton Open Air, but also featured a cover version of BATTLE BEAST's 'Out Of Control' as a bonus track on their current charting success "Heroes". Prepare yourselves for the return of the beast!

    David Jones

Monkees 50th Anniversary Of Davy Jones' Super Rare 1965 Debut Album

First Time 180 Gram Vinyl With Gatefold Cover

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Featuring What Are We Going To Do & Bob Dylans' It Ain't Me Babe

Only in America can a young lad from Manchester, England break into show business playing The Artful Dodger in Oliver in New York City...winning accolades and a Tony Award nomination from the theater world one day.... and then mastering his craft on The Ed Sullivan Show the same night of The Beatles huge breakthrough, then signing a deal with Colpix Records the same night! A year later, he and three other gents became runaway teen idols on television, topping the charts all over the world as The Monkees, outselling The Beatles for a period and maintaining the coveted number one slot with several hit singles and albums over the next few years ..... Only in America.

This isn't make believe. It is the fabulous rise to fame in a hurry story courtesy of a superstar pop rock legend Davy Jones ..and the massive recording career that started with his long out of print first album David Jones.

Recorded throughout 1965 with a bevy of the hottest songwriters in the Columbia Pictures stable, this pop gem contained the rudiments of a major career which has endured for many years since.

Prior to his untimely death in 2012, Davy proudly noted to Friday Music "Did you know that Dream Girl went to number one in Australia?" Relaying the fact that Philly artist Van McCoy wrote this northern soul sounding track, Jones truly smiled at the U.K. term as this song had the arrangements and feel of r&b bands of the day like The Drifters and The Shirelles. This soulful side of Davy Jones would later show up on The Monkees hits like She Hangs Out, A Man Without A Dream and Forget That Girl.

The album's second single What Are We Going To Do? was a slight departure. It followed more of a Brit pop feel, and it warranted solid chart exposure as well as appearances on national TV shows like Shindig!

The brightest stars of the classic pop era also contributed to this album and would soon follow Davy Jones on his path to Monkeemania. Superstars like Carole King/Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, David Gates from Bread, Toni Wine who would later sing lead vocals on The Archies records and Bob Dylan with It Ain't Me Babe, which was also a hit for The Turtles that same year.

Friday Music is proud to offer this fine album for the first time in fifty years! This first time 180 gram audiophile vinyl Lp is now mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees) from the super rare Colpix Records stereo tapes, which truly shows a transition from pop crooner to future rock star.

In 1967, the David Jones l.p. charted thanks to his rise to fame as a member of The Monkees and the album cover was cleverly featured in The Monkees TV show episode, Monkees At The Movies.

    Enjoy!

    METZ: II

"I look at it like this," METZ frontman Alex Edkins says. "You
start a band, just as something to do, because music's what
makes you tick, the thing you dream about and think about and
that's it. You never think that you'll be able to do it all the time.
But then, for some inexplicable reason, people actually listen
and latch on and the band begins to take on new meaning. All
of a sudden there are expectations and pressure, real or
imagined, to change who you are. It was important to us, when
making this record, not to give in to that pressure."

What happens when a seemingly irresistible force meets an
immovable object is a serviceable metaphor for the music
METZ creates, both live and on record. Now behold II, the
concussive new full-length from what is arguably North
America's finest touring rock band. Written and recorded in
2014, after two years of constant touring behind their rightly
adored self-titled debut, II is METZ at their most true to
form-as pure an expression of what they do as can currently
be committed to tape. The guitars are titanic, the drums
ill-tempered, the vocals chilling, and the volume worrisome.

From the exhilarating grind of "Spit You Out" to the blunt-force
thrills of "Landfill," herein reside 10 songs as uncompromising
in their ferocity and abrasiveness as any collection this record
label has had the pleasure of releasing to date. While the
band's debut was often "clean and clinical," II is what Edkins
describes as a "much heavier, darker, and sloppier" affair, with
many of its roughest edges and ugliest tones kept intact. Its
lyrical matter, Edkins notes, stems from a year of loss and
doubt, of contemplating our relationships with death and the
planet. "I consider myself a pretty massive pessimist, but a
pessimist who knows how lucky he is," he says. "A lot of things
    in everyday life drive me crazy: how we relate to each other;
how politics, media, technology, money and medication
influence our lives. This band, in a lot of ways, is an outlet."

What we're left with is the sound of an already monstrous band
improving in both subtle and terrifying ways.

    The Last Days of Oakland

Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful shit. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy. Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to make it, who got it, and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn't, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness. For anyone who ever considered getting their old high-school band back together, this is your inspiration. These are singular songs by a true musician who writes and produces. They are his fuel as he embarks on the third comeback of his life.

The first life ('who am I and where am I going?'). Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito's family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, he was hit with an intense culture shock. Oakland in 1980s was a million miles from Negrito's conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day, living in the heart of one of the wildest, most infamous, most vibrant black communities in the nation. Shit was extra real in Oakland.

By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, but he was also caught up in street shit. This went on for several years until a near death encounter with masked gunmen. After that Negrito packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette.

The second life ('I want to be a star I think'). It didn't take long for Negrito to find himself entrenched in the 'Hollywood' lifestyle; clubs and bitches and bullshit politics that have nothing to do with great music. Negrito signed with a big time manager and soon after that, a million dollar deal at Interscope and soon after that, creative death.

The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. He was infected by the constant emphasis on 'what would sell'; which looks, hooks and gimmicks would attract an audience. He lost all sense of himself. The songs stopped coming to him, so he quit. He sold all of his shit and he quit.

In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Though he rehabbed intensely for several years, the damage was permanent. In 2008, he returned home to Oakland.

The third life (the birth of Negrito). Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He settled down, planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. This is when his specific POV of the world came into focus. His conservative Muslim values melded with the liberal, multi-cultural world of Oakland. The cynicism that comes from struggle made room for the hope that comes from cheating death. He truly knew who he was. He was confident about his place in the world because he understood it as much as any man can. And then his son was born.

With his son's entrance into the world, all the creative energy Negrito bottled for years came rushing out. His musical choices were sharp and without doubt. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Fuck what's hot now, what moves me? Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta.

For Fantastic Negrito, derivative is the devil so to ensure his sound is his own, every chord comes from a place of immediacy. Immediacy opens the door for instinct. Instinct is God's tool that makes an artist into an individual. Negrito leaves the original sounds of Lead Belly and Skip Woods intact and builds bridges to modernity by looping and sampling his own live instruments.

When you listen to Negrito, you're invited to hear the story of life after destruction. Your dream can die. You probably will give up. But from there, you can start everything over.
