    Dusty

Dusty (PMC 7004) shared the same striking cover photo as that UK album, but its contents were completely different. Originally released in November 1964, this well-programmed disc features the US-only single 'All Cried Out' and two of Dusty's signature performances in the ballads 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself,' and 'My Coloring Book.' Several songs such as 'I Wish I'd Never Loved You' and 'Summer Is Over' were B-sides or EP cuts elsewhere, and tracks like 'Guess Who?' would not even see release in the UK until the CD era. Once again, the mono mixes of many of these cuts have not been reissued on vinyl since the 1960s.

Ranked 89/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Britain's greatest pop diva Dusty Springfield was the finest white soul singer of her era and this landmark Atlantic Records album from 1969 is a masterpiece, a perfect marriage of pop and soul...contains her top 10 hit Son Of A Preacher Man plus several other hit singles and classic tracks...

Originally released in 1969, the concept for Dusty In Memphis was to take England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music which had inspired her. Produced by Atlantic's Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineered by Tom Dowd, the record's highlights include Son Of A Preacher Man, So Much Love, Breakfast In Bed, Just One Smile, I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore and Just A Little Lovin'. Springfield is backed by a crack band that had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley among others. The musicians - collectively known as the Memphis Cats - include guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Tommy Cogbill, drummer Gene Chrismann, pianist Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons on organ and electric piano. Songwriting contributions came from, among others, Randy Newman, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Yonkers NY

If a songwriter of some accomplishment who is also a singer predominantly known for his work in country music was looking for a subject for a deeply personal cycle of songs, it's pretty unlikely that Yonkers, New York, a small city bordering on New York City's borough of the Bronx, would be the subject.

Not, of course, unless the writer is Chip Taylor, who grew up there. With Yonkers, NY, Taylor, a veteran songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, the Hollies and, of course, the Troggs (who waxed his first big hit, Wild Thing), has gone back to his childhood and adolescence and come up with eleven songs filled with warmth and humor, enlivened with spoken reminiscences and packaged with a book of lyrics and vintage photos of the people and places that are their subjects. The songs on Yonkers, NY take us into Taylor's family life and into his discovery of music, horses and girls, opening these subjects up with a skill only a master songwriter can summon.

    Musicians:

    John Platania - electric guitar

Greg Leisz - steel guitar, dobro & mandolin

    Tony Mercadante - electric bass

Seth Farber - piano and accordian

    Kendel Carson - fiddle

Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives

Just the name Paris evokes thoughts of romance. From tiny streetside cafes serving cafe au lait and fresh croissants to the breathtaking panoramic view as seen from atop the Eiffel Tower, the city simply oozes love. Thankfully the city of love also has a darker side. One just as dedicated to love, just love of a different kind. Love of all things heavy and all things rock. And that's the real Paris the one where Abrahma lives.

Formed in 2005 under the moniker Alcohsonic, this Parisian quartet epitimized the ideals of Rock and Roll. Blending the classic American 70's sound with blues, southern roots and just a hint of the modern Seb Bismuth, Nicolas Heller and the brothers Colin attempted to set Europe on fire. Their flame burned hot but far too bright and after five years, one LP and a scathing trail of live shows sharing the stage with the likes of Brant Bjork and Cactus, their course was run. But like a pheonix rising from it's own ashes Alcohsonic has been reborn as Abrahma.

''Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives'' is a self made monument to what might have been and an explosive first example what is yet to come. Five years on the road has hardened the sound and forged the new songs like iron in flame. Gone are any hints of 70's revivalism, buried beneath thick sludgy riffs and thundering basslines. Six hands play as one with the voice of an angry angel lighting the way. Featuring a guest appearance by Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet) and artwork designed by Alexander vonWieding ''Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives'' is a once in a lifetime debut. Catch a glimpse before the sparks begin to fly.

    Addicted To Distraction

Peter Saletts life-embracing, zeitgeist-capturing, genre-spanning sixth album, Addicted to Distraction has many different styles collected under one roofa mixtape with the same singer. On this record, there's a straight up Bacharach number Infatuation, a Johnny Cash story song The Rains of Cozumel, a Leonard Cohen poem Snow Covered Ice, a song the Boss could have sung on The River It Dont Bother Me No More, some easygoing canyon rock Sifting Through the Pages, an amped-up Lou Reed-style rocker (the title track), a New Orleans-flavored party song Take It to the One, and lots of horns and flutes and strings and guitars and pianos and ooohs and ahhs and rhythm not tied to a click track. One of Dusty's rarest and most desirable albums from this era, Ooooooweeee!!! (PMC 7005), issued in March 1965 was another fascinating potpourri of UK singles tracks, stray EP and LP cuts, and material initially exclusive to the release. Amongst the latter were several songs Springfield recorded in New York such as 'Here She Comes' and 'If Wishes Could Be Kisses,' the mono takes of which have different vocal parts to the stereo.

The rest of the tracklist is drawn from the singer's first UK album, and includes her thrilling interpretations of choice Motown and girl group gems like Lesley Gore's empowerment anthem 'You Don't Own Me' and the Bacharach classic '24 Hours From Tulsa.'

Albino deer have crept from thick blankets of bayou fog, dusty country roads bear witness to crawling men resembling tattered garbage bags, Civil War remnants pick fragile banjos for the dancing campfire dead... This I have seen yet not one of these glorious sights equals the power of Songs: Ohia... Another offering shall calm the howl from an angry cold winters' night. Mini Mansions

On a break from Queens of the Stone Age, Michael Shuman melded heads and locked arms with longtime friends Tyler Parkford and Zach Dawes in a dusty room in the San Fernando Valley. Here, they began a collaborative sÉance out of which birthed Mini Mansions in January of 2009. Though their triangle is usually confined to piano, bass, and a cocktail drum kit, the LA-based trio generates a technicolor spectrum of sound drawn from the baroque, gothic, psychedelic, and cinematic realms. Their debut self-titled release, due out via Dangerbird Records/Rekords Rekords, curtseys to the past, bows to the present, and foreshadows a progressively more abstract future.

    M. Ward describes Transistor Radio as a collection of songs "about childhood memories of a utopian radio power..." and dedicates the album to "the last of the remaining independent radio stations." Opening with a beautiful John Fahey-esque instrumental rendition of the Beach Boys' "You Still Believe in Me," Transistor Radio continues down a dusty well-worn road full of timeless, uniquely American stories. Ward's distinctly weathered voice and intricate guitar playing are helped along with an impressive group of guests incuding Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Jordan Hudson (The Thermals).

    The Greatest

Cat Power's (aka Chan Marshall) 2006 masterpiece The Greatest (not a greatest hits album, despite the title) features 12 dreamy country soul tracks recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios under the supervision of Stuart Sikes. The sublime set finds Marshall wonderfully supported by the great Memphis session musicians Teenie Hodges on guitar and Leroy Hodges on bass (Al Green, Hi Rhythm Section), drummer Steve Potts, Jim Spake, Hubby Michell and other legends.

The combination of Marshall's superbly evocative and flexible voice, a soul voice even back when she played with indie rockers, with some of the greatest Southern soul players still alive, has produced a timeless release on par with Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis or Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline.

The songs, all original Marshall compositions, explore themes of Southern loss, longing and marginality. From the title track, a story about a boy who longs to become a boxer but struggles against his poverty-stricken background, to tales of other marginal figures, The Greatest is all about triumphing over the odds. Dark Place

Some singers can create a mood far before the first syllables of lyric have been
woven into a full story; a tone, mixed to dissolve perfectly into music, can say it
all. Such is the case with Jessie Baylin, whose ethereal voice shoots the opening
notes of Dark Place, her fourth album, into instant emotive territory - it envelops
in a mysterious gauze, setting the stage for what is her most raw, personal
work yet and also her most thrilling.

Baylin's always been adept at capturing the fragile, complex state of
human relationships with a hand that understands the middle ground - things
aren't always what they seem, and she isn't afraid to play in that treacherous territory.
She often weaves a forlorn lyric with an optimistic vocal lick, or a cheerier
song with a foreboding crunch of guitar, looming like a distant thunderstorm; it
sometimes makes it difficult to tell if a track is innately happy or sad, but that's
the point. Dark Place is the epitome of this dichotomy.

It's the combination of elements on Dark Place that make it such a
rattling look into not only Baylin's mind but the human condition: her voice, in its
other-worldly tone that can be both angelic and deeply plaintive, cuts through
poetic lyrics with throbbing guitars that carve scratches at the beautiful surface,
bounding free of both classification and genre. She's Nico, if she could sing like
Nina Simone; she's Dusty Springfield fronting Mazzy Star. "Dusty," she says,
    before adding, "on Quaaludes."

    Rockferry

Duffy's debut release, Rockferry has allready reached #1 in the U.K. and its first single, Mercy, has already reached platinum status there, holding the #1 airplay position for four weeks in a row. Rockferry has been described as having the power, the depth, the songs, the vocals and the music to anoint it as an instant classic. With comparisons to Dusty Springfield, Lulu and the soul of Otis Redding, Duffy has created a stunning and modern body of work here with a nod to the throwback Stax albums that have stood the test of time. Duffy's U.K. breakthrough Rockferry is poised in every way, to make its mark on the U.S. charts as well and with songs like these, it seems likely.

    What A Beautiful Place

Since arriving on London racks in the summer of 1970, Catherine HoweÆs debut album has been unavailable in its original format. Less than 20 LP copies survived Reflection RecordsÆ demise, and the album sat in the can until NumeroÆs 2007 CD issue. Produced by the legendary jazz pianist Bobby Scott, this orchestral-folk master stroke has once again been set to lacquer, remastered and restored directly from the original master tapes specifically for this deluxe vinyl release. Gatefold package includes replica LP art and complete annotation on the sessions and history of this forgotten Brit-folk treasure.

ôItÆs like some missing link between Sandy Denny and Karen Carpenter, or between Ladies of the Canyon and Dusty in Memphis . If you buy no other reissue this year, buy this.ö - Barney Hoskyns, Guardian UK

    Unida Cantina

For over a decade, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have not only redefined what mainstream radio would have the public believe is popular, but they have rewritten the rules on how songs are written and albums are made. Working on an independent label and sticking to their credo of art leading commerce, RCPM have consistently produced nothing but uncompromised, unadultered, pure rock 'n' roll.

Now 15 years after the cult-class Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy, listen as Clyne, one of America's great singer/songwriters continues his journey down the highway across the dusty Mexican borderlands to Unida Cantina. The release marks Clyne's most upbeat record since the aforementioned Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy and the most collaborative Peacemaker album to date. RCPM reaches new heights on Unida Cantina with the songwriting duo of Clyne and guitarist Jim Dalton and the dynamic rhythm section of bassist Nick Scropos and drummer PH Naffah.

    Silk & Soul

Recorded in New York in 1967, Silk & Soul is Nina Simone's second album for RCA.
And despite arrangements that don't always best suit her voice, this album does contain classics 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free', which would become a Civil Rights anthem, 'It Be's That Way Sometimes', written by her brother Sam Waymon, and 'The Turning Point', a song that seems to be about a child making a new friend, but turns out to question the origins of racism.

Ms Simone also takes on Dusty Springfield by covering 'The Look Of Love', which was originally featured in the 1966 James Bond spoof Casino Royale and is greatly inspired by Mozart in the fugue-like 'Consummation'.

    House Of Spirits

A more melancholic take on Brian Eno's "Baby's On Fire",
only with dusty country-style vocal harmonies - Pitchfork

Bells of Paonia is a lush and pretty fuzz-guitar drone with
plenty of starry-eyed melody in there - Stereogum

Warm organ tones shine through the fuzz, showing The Fresh &
Onlys at their most earnest and heartfelt. - Consequence of
    Sound

With surreal nightmares, glistening pop tempered by sinister
undertones and even unsettling experimentalism, The Fresh & Onlys'
fifth album, House of Spirits is the San Francisco quartet's most
focused and most experimental yet. The material gestated during
vocalist Tim Cohen's isolated stay on an Arizonan horse ranch where
he documented dreams in a bedside notebook. The resultant songs are
by turns pristine, feverish, and bizarre, as The Fresh & Onlys returned
to Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco with Phil Manley (Trans Am)
to recast the textures, leaps of logic and evocative character of
    Cohen's dreams into songs.
