Live From Austin, TX (Dwight Yoakam)

Twenty-something Dwight Yoakam was literally the new kid in country music when he stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage in October 1988. But even then, as he has ever since, he was doing things his own way. Dwight was born in a small Kentucky town and grew up listening to mountain and bluegrass music, and unlike most of the mainstream country-pop crooners of the eighties, he almost single-handedly revived the rockabilly / honky tonk / hillbilly sound that was one of the cornerstones of country music's formative years. Early on he discovered the fabled Bakersfield sound of the 60s and adopted it as his own, in the tradition of country legends Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Buck, in fact, became his hero and friend. When Dwight was playing a fair in Bakersfield, he stopped by Buck's office and coaxed him into playing a few songs with him on stage that night. The result was a lasting friendship and their historic duet, Streets Of Bakersfield. Much like his heroes, Dwight has been true to his roots and breaking new ground for almost 20 years.

Deluxe Edition Includes Demos And Live Tracks

Produced by Pete Anderson, the disc's sinewy mix of traditional honky-tonk, red-hot Bakersfield twang and rock n' roll attitude spawned a trio of hits including a cover of Johnny Horton's Honky Tonk Man, It Won't Hurt, and the title track. In the bigger picture, its stripped-down sound twisted together strains of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Elvis Presley, and more--with a roots-driven rawness, it changed and revitalized country music.

    Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars

American music treasure Dwight Yoakam's special collaboration with leading bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars is set for release this fall. For the making of this album, Yoakam assembled a band of bluegrass luminaries to reinterpret favorites from his catalogue of gems. The 11-track album features Yoakam compositions from his extensive catalog.

This project was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby") and Yoakam, recorded at both Southern Ground Studio (TN) and the legendary Capitol Records Studio B in Los Angeles and mixed by Chris Lord Alge. For the recording, the production team gathered together a world-class band of bluegrass's current greats including Grammy winner and nine-time international Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year Bryan Sutton on guitar, Grammy winner Stuart Duncan on fiddle and banjo, 14-time Grammy winner Barry Bales on bass, Adam Steffey on mandolin (Alison Krauss), and Scott Vestal on banjo (Sam Bush). The LP also features harmony vocals by Jonathan Clark, Brian Whelan, Davey Faragher and newcomer Bryan Joyce.

Midland intentionally nods to the wild west with Country music reminiscent of the 1970s and 80s, channeling idols Dwight Yoakam and Willie Nelson, both legends whom they previously opened for on the road. Their 2016 self-titled debut EP was featured in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and Billboard and their music video earned them their first CMT Music Awards nomination for Group Video of the Year. The Fantastic Johnny Horton

    Import

The original Fantastic Johnny Horton LP, released in 1959, didn't contain any of these recordings. Instead, it contained twelve early-mid '50s Mercury recordings. This is, however, the truly fantastic Johnny Horton: sixteen of his very best recordings from his years with Columbia Records. Here you can find the electricity, vibrancy, and presence that had barely been hinted at on Horton's earlier recordings. He worked with a very aggressive, prominently mixed rhythm section that included a string bass (Bill Black, sometimes), a rhythm guitar, and Grady Martin on lead guitar. Martin played outrageous single string solos and fills. His slurs, chokes and bent notes, helped to create the vocabulary of rock'n'roll guitar. These are Johnny Horton's rockin'est recordings and they were made to be heard on vinyl. The highlights are too many as every song is a classic in its own right. Just ask any of the artists, including Dwight Yoakam and George Jones, who have revived these songs!

Live From Austin, TX (Buck Owens)

Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to 'Buck Owens.' So I said, I'm going to see what this kid is like. It wasn't long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier. This man from Sherman, Texas - probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years - started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called The Bakersfield Sound. He and fellow revolutionary Merle Haggard were cranking out raw, hard-driving honky-tonk music that stood the country-pop coming out of Nashville on its head. When Buck Owens and the Buckaroos would launch into I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see....! the packed crowds would be on their feet and headed for the dance floor. Along the way Buck inspired none other than The Beatles to record their first country song, his classic Act Naturally, and the master of soul, Ray Charles, to immortalize one of the best-known country songs ever, Crying Time. Buck always loved his home state, and once flew to Austin on his private jet to make a surprise visit to a club that celebrated a Buck Owens Birthday night every year. He was also one of the few artists to ever write a handwritten note thanking us for inviting him on the show. Many thanks, he wrote, it is very representative of what I am all about. In my mind, Buck Owens will always be a rock star.

    Dangerous Things

Dan Layus is set to release his debut album, Dangerous Things, via Plated Records.

Dangerous Things spans influences from Hank Williams to Tom Waits, from Dwight Yoakam to Woody Guthrie. The album was recorded in Nashville at SouthxSea Studios with minimal production. The lyrics are about life's struggles and its simple joys, and harmonies are provided by Muscle Shoals' own Secret Sisters.

Primarily known as the frontman of the critically acclaimed band Augustana, Layus explains, "I always knew this album was out there waiting, I just had to let it come to me. That was the most challenging part of this record. It was three years of repeatedly realizing I was trying too hard to write a perfect song. It all started to make sense and feel good as soon as I stopped treating songwriting like it was songwriting. Somewhere along the way I decided that if an idea was going to turn into a song on this album, then it had to be written organically and purely. It had to be an inspired moment that was unfolding melodically, musically and lyrically, all while making me feel something. Subsequently, that's how I recorded the songs-I played the song live a few times in front of some microphones and when I felt something real happen, we moved onto the next one. The songs and recordings on this album are inspired by other people's stories and informed by my own experiences and I've never felt more proud or comfortable sharing an album as I feel with this one."

    Jason James

Jason James' self-titled debut, due out August 21st on the esteemed New West Records label, introduces a charismatic young artist whose effortless mastery of his chosen style serves as a deeply compelling vehicle for his vibrant creative spirit. The talented Texan writes rousing honky-tonk anthems, heart-tugging ballads and smart, sly-humored country-rock tunes that echo the vintage classics that are his touchstones, and sings them with a level of emotional urgency that makes it clear that he means every word. The 13 original compositions that comprise Jason James make it clear that the artist is making music that's timeless rather than retro, reflecting his interest in adding to country tradition rather than merely emulating it. A stellar supporting cast was recruited to bring James' songs to life: producers John Evans (Hayes Carll, Corb Lund), Keith Gattis (Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam) and engineer Steve Christensen (Steve Earle, Destiny's Child) were at the helm, while the virtuosic talents of Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam), Glen Duncan (George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton), Steve Hinson (Randy Travis) and New West labelmate Robert Ellis can be heard gracing the expansive, 13-song collection.
