Basements have long been associated with raw, off-the-cuff rock n roll, the damp and dark spaces serving as the woodshedding venues for countless bands. Yet no basement is more famous, and none yielded music as familiarly weird, wholesomely American, joyously loose, and identifiably humorous as that in the upstate New York house dubbed Big Pink the location where, during the summer and early fall of 1967, Bob Dylan and The Band played a vivid tapestry of covers, originals, and traditionals that signaled the advent of Americana. Once again, the Bard changed the world.
As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is thoroughly humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic LP from the original master tapes and pressing it on dead-quiet LPs at RTI. The end result is the very finest, most transparent analog edition of The Basement Tapes ever produced and the first-ever analog reissue. Inimitable, the particulars of The Basement Tapes especially, the gather-round-in-a-huddle assembly of the instrumentalists, home-made character, domestic vibe, and low-volume nature of the recordings come to fore here in a manner that takes the listener down the stairs at 2188 Stoll Road and brings the images of Dylan, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, and Co. to life.
Fresh off experiencing a motorcycle accident and the wrath of audiences hostile to his embrace of amplified music, Dylan elected to retreat to the comforts of rural and family life. He soon began collaborating with members of the Band in his house, ultimately moving the sessions to Big Pink. Informal, peaceful, relaxed, open-minded: The collaborations blanket country stomps, roots hootenannies, forgotten spirituals, earthy originals, chaotic marches, dreamscapes, dance tunes, folk laments, catch-as-you-can improvisations. On The Basement Tapes, mythical ghosts and dead legends reappear, reveling in the absurdity, comedy, mystery, aura, and alchemy.
In Invisible Republic, his scintillating book about the sessions, cultural critic Greil Marcus states: At a time when the country was tearing itself apart in a war at home over a war abroad, the music was funny and comforting; it was also strange, and somehow incomplete. Out of some odd displacement of art and time, the music seemed both transparent and inexplicable when it was first heard, and it still does. Indeed, The Basement Tapes appear to emanate from an indefinable chasm between modern and ancient, self-evident and mysterious, shapeless and fully formed, abstract and concrete, histories unwritten and chronicled. But every note chimes with freenessa liberating fun, humble simplicity, and bond-creating camaraderie felt in every hoot, holler, laugh, and false start.
The Basement Tapes capacity to remain so gloriously honest and timeless performances that genuinely could've been made today, ten years from now, or back in the 1930's helps account for their emotional resonance and unsurpassed reputation as a snapshot of how unencumbered American music, and art with deep historical roots and connective cultural tissues, is supposed to sound.
Mobile Fidelity's reissue squares away the late-night bleariness, jovial atmosphere, low-ceiling dimensions, and ensemble-based perspective of the sessions, allowing the listener to become Hamlet, the dog who slept nearby Dylan, Robertson, and Co. as it all went down. This is not to be missed.

Born in Hobbs, New Mexico, and raised in rural Texas towns like Spring and Stephenville, Bingham made his living as a bullrider on the Texas rodeo circuit. Bob Dylan was at several crossroads in the mid-1970s. Artistically, he was largely written off as being past his prime. Emotionally, he was suffering through a painful divorce from his then-wife Sara Lowndes. Creatively, he appeared at a stalemate, his previous decades unprecedented run of transformational brilliance finished. Then came Blood on the Tracks.
A start-to-finish cycle that documents a lovers pursuit of, entanglement with, and loss of a woman, the bracingly intimate 1975 effort remains one of the most encompassing break-up albums ever made and ranks as the most personal statement of the Bards career. The legendary Bay area rock superstars the Grateful Dead scored for over four decades a plethora of wonderful recordings throughout their incredible career. Spearheaded originally by the late great Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kruetzmann and the late Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, these five gentlemen set the world on fire with their magnificent artistry and musicianship unparalleled to this day.
With their very first San Francisco live gigs and when they were locally known as The Warlocks, the historical importance of these debut concert recordings would soon become a blueprint for the music world as the Grateful Dead would become one of the biggest concert attractions of all time.
Over a decade ago, the Grateful Dead unearthed 14 super rare live recordings from the mid-sixties. None of these recordings were ever previously released at the time. Recorded in San Francisco from a July 1966 performance, when they were signed to the Scorpio Records label, this ultra rare concert tape simply became manna for the fans and was truly a find for any collector of fine rock and roll and

Primitive And Deadly, is EARTH's tenth studio collection. Dylan Carlson and long term cohort, drummer Adrienne Davies, manage to pull off the trick of completing an Ouroborean creative cycle, twenty-five years in the making, whilst exploring new directions in their music. For the first time in their diverse second act, they allow themselves to be a rock band, freed of adornment and embellishment. As much as Carlson's guitar has always been the focal point of EARTH's music, it's been surrounded by consistently diverse instrumentation. Here the dialog between Carlson and Davies drumming remains pivotal, underpinned by the sympathetic bass of Bill Herzog (Sunn O))), Joel RL Phelps, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) and thickened by additional layers of guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin) and Jodie Cox (Narrows). Perhaps the largest left turn on Primitive And Deadly, though, is prominence of guest vocalists Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows) who transform the traditionally free ranging meditations of EARTH into something approaching traditional pop structures.
On Rooks Across the Gates, a song stylistically the closest to the folk inspired modality of Angels Of Darkness, Carlson stretches out into some of his most lyrical playing to date, creating an almost symbiotic relationship between his performance and the vocals of old friend Mark Lanegan. From the Zodiacal Light, meanwhile, takes the late 60s San Franciscan/freaked-out jazz-rock transcendence of The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull and quickly re-appropriates that sound into a musky torch song for the witching hour.
This contradictive tension between a band pushing itself ever-forward whilst surveying their history is reflected in the albums twin recording locales. The foundation of the record was laid in the mystic desert high lands of Joshua Tree, California where EARTH recorded hour after hour of meditations on each tracks central theme at Rancho de la Luna. Upon returning to Seattle these were edited, arranged and expanded upon at Avast with the help of long-term collaborator Randall Dunn (who was previously at the helm for the Hex, The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull and Hibernaculum sessions).
Thick, dense and overdriven, melodically rich and enveloping, Primitive And Deadly is EARTH reaffirming their position as a singular point in the history of rock.

Fine Art Of Self DestructionJesse Malin segued from a decade as frontman for NYC's D Generation, a band whose glam-metal pose was as ironic as it was misunderstood, to this reincarnation as shrewd, stripped-down Gotham singer-songwriter. Comparisons to Bruce Springsteen have already been floated, but Malin's sensibilities here are as subtly shaded and introspective as the Boss's are broad and declamatory. Midwifed by producer/ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams, Malin's affection for the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Steve Earle is obvious, but filtered through a savory, pop-conscious mÉlange of musical textures that evoke everything from Motown to Tex-Mex. Malin's lyrical sense is no less evocative, with simple lines conjuring up worlds of possibilities. This is his first release under his own name.
Policy is American music-in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, The
Breeders, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, The Magnetic
Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts).
Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world.
Policy was recorded in one week in Jimi Hendrix's old living room
(upstairs at Electric Lady Studios). Jeremy Gara played drums; other
musicians contributed woodwinds and backing vocals. Most everything else
was played by Will.
The song structures are traditional; the arrangements are clean. The music is
experimental only in that it attacks consistency as a requirement for sincerity.
The songs are angry, loving, joking, tired, honest, idiotic. They clash against
each other but also fit and work together-as if a blind watchmaker made a
Frankenstein watch that came alive and told extremely accurate time while
having conflicting feelings about its creator. No, about creation itself. But
then the watch makes friends with a talking rat, and they go on hilarious
adventures until it turns out that the rat was dead the whole time. With a
really good credits song-I mean, the whole soundtrack is excellent. You
