    Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples

Though there are currently dozens of small labels dedicated to unearthing and reissuing forgotten soul recordings from the `60s and `70s, few of them can compete with Chicago's Numero label, whose ECCENTRIC SOUL releases serve not just as fine collections of rare soul, but as miniature history lessons that throw light on forgotten corners of the American experience. Where previous ECCENTRIC SOUL volumes have documented the vibrant independent soul scenes that flourished in Miami, Chicago, and Detroit, THE YOUNG DISCIPLES album collects the output of St Louis' Merry and Gateway labels. The Young Disciples band accompanies talented and heretofore unknown young singers like LaVel Moore and Dauphin Jackson on a series of sides ranging from hard driving southern funk to impassioned torch songs.

    Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg

Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg chronicles Phoenix, Arizona's off- Funky Broadway scene that happened while Dyke and his Blazers were setting national charts on fire in the late '60s/early '70s. Covering Tejano psych, flute funk, both horny soul and horny kid soul, cackling R&B, deep ballads, and fist-fight doowop, Lenaburg channeled that wrong side of the desert sound to a dozen 45s for the Mighty, Darlene, Homogenized Sound, Ramco and Out of Sight imprints.

Although listing these totally obscure groups is an exercise in futility, Numero has anyway; Michael Liggins, the Super Souls, We The People, Ronnie Whitehead, Small Paul, the Soulsations, Lon Rogers, the Soul Blenders, Sheila Jack, Clarence Townes and the Newlyweds.

Five years since Numero's initial CD release, Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg finally makes it back to its intended format as a deluxe double LP. This 180g Loaded To The Gills edition features 10 bonus tracks, scores of new photographs and new liner notes, all housed in a heavy gatefold jacket.

    1. Too Good To Be True - Lon Rogers & The Soul Blenders
    2. Standing On The Corner - Michael Liggins

    Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label

In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown's touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor's Forte label back at full fighting strength. She'd calmed aching crowds the day after MLK's death, and she'd lived the life, despite its rigors-to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including "I've Lived The Life" and "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear," which made national rounds in 1972.

By then, Forte had already done more than deliver Marvelous Marva to market. Taylor worked overtime at KPRS to bring the world The Rayons, who'd stroll their girl group harmonies past Chicago's RCA studios on "Baby Be Good." In '68, The Four Darlings sauntered in with smoky-voiced soul operatics on the demanding "Give Me Love." Progressing in the middle '70s, Everyday People got "Super Black" on Forte's pine-green label. Still powering forward some 13 years on, Forte redawned with the 1980s, essaying disco funk with Sharon Revoal's "Reaching for Our Star."

Numero 047 Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label charts Kansas City yeoman's work, the Carpets and the Derbys, dapper clothiers mysteriously murdered, and marriages made and broken. In 28 LP tracks, plus a trove of promo headshots and every-hued label scans
detailing all iterations of Forte's logo in print, this 16th Eccentric Soul sojourn hands over vivid floor shakers and lost dance craze records alike-though what moves "The Hen" required remains anyone's guess.

    Eccentric Soul: Capital City Soul

Fifty records later, The Numero Group returns to its
eccentric roots, Ohio's Capitol City and the sonorous
Shangri-La carved out by the indefatigable Bill Moss.
Filling in, around, and on top of our original The
Capsoul Label collection, Capitol City Soul is a trove
of completely unissued and underissued treasures from
Moss and company. A decade in the making, this is the
set of soul discoveries that no one but The Numero
Group could achieve. Features otherwise unreleased
songs from the Kool Blues, the Four Mints, Jupiter's
Release, and Love Maximum, alongside rare sides
by Dean Francis & the Soul Rockers, the Chandlers,
Associated Press, the Soul Partners, and the Vondors.
From the vaults under the basements under the garages
of one of the nation's most unsung music scenes.

This double LP set is ensconced in a thick tip-on
gatefold jacket splashed with a colorful spread of vivid
archival imagery accumulated over a decade of research
into the Columbus, Ohio culture. The liner notes
serve as an in-depth history of Columbus soul music,
linking The Capsoul Label with The Prix Label and
Norman Whiteside's Wee project (recently sampled by
Kanye West). A strong addition to the already
epic Eccentric Soul series from The Numero Group.

Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label

Fueled by the financial drippings of number runners
and boosted by Hall-of-Fame running back Jim Brown,
Cleveland, Ohio's Way Out Records offered asylum for a
rising crop of rogue soul men, rust-belt vocal ensembles,
and trial-by-fire producers. Helmed by a friendly
consortium of hustlers, police officers, and gridiron
giants, pet project beget obsession as Motown arrangers,
gospel choirs, and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra
were all beckoned to the wrong side of the tracks to mint
masterpieces for the Sensations, Volcanic Eruption, the
Exceptional Three, and Bobby Wade, all beneath the
mindful gaze of a wall-mounted shotgun. Reaching their
peak in the late '60s, Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label
gathers the brightest moments from the quirky operation's
    eleven year bid.

The 3LP configuration boasts a double gatefold with
beautiful photos and ephemera from the label's low-flying
promotional department. For fans of group harmony,
sweet soul, orchestral feats and lo-fi oddities, The Way Out
Label is an excellent addition to our already popular and
    powerful Eccentric Soul series.

The second full length from Television Personalities, also released in 1981, is more psychedelic than the first, but still with plenty of dry and acerbic wit. Eccentric post-punk and pop from one the UKs most original bands.

    How Dare You

    Import

How Dare You (1976) is the fourth album by these British Art-Pop Rockers. Its brilliant cover art was designed by the recently deceased Storm Thorgersson of Hipgnosis. After attaining worldwide success with their hit "I'm Not In Love", 10cc returned with a varied set of songs, often tongue-in-cheek humor and eccentric songwriting. Hits "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" and "Art For Art's Sake" are little stories with wonderful poppy hooks and catchy choruses. This is 10cc at their creative peak!

    Maggot Brain

Ranked 486/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Maggot Brain, released in 1971, is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, vision and, let's be honest, sheer lunacy to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are bookended with tracks like Maggot Brain and Wars Of Armageddon, which are some of the heaviest tracks ever committed to tape. The title track and album opener are nothing short of mind-blowing. An essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic canon.

    Stay Lost

The Athens, GA and Nashville, TN four-piece
White Violet returns with their sophomore effort Stay Lost.
A more upbeat sequel to the band's dreamy and dark debut
Hiding, Mingling, the new record was tracked at Mitch
Easter's legendary Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville,
NC, with master engineer Scott Solter (Centro-Matic,
    Spoon, Superchunk).

What sets Stay Lost apart from previous releases is that this
is not the sole brainchild of singer/songwriter Nate Nelson.
The eleven new songs find a finely honed, battle-worn lineup
collectively exploring the wide-open soundscapes that once
belonged to Nelson alone. More upbeat, the album soars
aloft ethereal guitars, airtight melodies, and eccentric and
    galvanizing rhythms.

    Funkadelic (Colored Vinyl)

Limited Edition Of 500 Red & Blue Vinyl In A Deluxe Classic Style Jacket

The 1970 debut from Detroit's nastiest, most shredding progenitors of funk-rock. Funkadelic formed in the late '60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross, and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporates a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time. Sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow to Ice Cube, Funkadelic still sounds fresh today and is the first solid example of George Clinton's eccentric genius.

    Slurrup

Hayes has been making critically acclaimed pop records since 1994, when he released the single "Three-Quarters Blind Eyes" b/w "Found a Little Baby". Considered by many to be a pop classic, it helped to establish him as a songwriter. In 1998, he released More You Becomes You, a spare, stripped-down collection of his intimate tunes. In 2002, he released Fed, a lush, orchestral album. 2009's Bright Penny, an ode to pop music, was released under the name Liam Hayes and Plush.

Although he emerged from the Chicago indie-rock scene, Hayes is often compared with artists such as Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro, Burt Bacharach and Harry Nilsson. Like some of the best folk-pop or soft soul from the 1960's of 1970's there is a timeless quality to his music.

Hayes is not the kind of artist who spends all day interacting on social media. He doesn't reveal a lot in interviews. He's not trying to be cagey or eccentric or elusive, he would just rather keep the focus on his songs. And let's face it, mystique is underrated in this era of over-sharing. Described by Uncut as 'one of the most charismatic and eccentric cult pop craftsmen of the past 20 years', Hayes has a newly completed album right around the corner, to be released worldwide on Fat Possum. While comparably retro, Hayes' newly completed "Slurrup" is leaner and meaner than anything he's done all millennium.

    Funkadelic

The 1970 self titled debut from Detroit's nastiest, most shredding funk-rock group. Arising from the ashes of George Clinton's Plainfield, New Jersey-led R&B group, The Parliments, Funkadelic formed in the late '60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporated a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time and since. Stranded

Roxy Music began to reign in its unsettling, quirky art rock on Stranded, the band's third album. In absense of keyboardist/arranger Brain Eno, vocalist Bryan Ferry assumes full control of Roxy Music's musical direction, moving toward a less overtly experimental, yet still progressive and eccentric style. Ferry still sings in a camp-styled croon, yet his songwriting is sharper and more nuanced here, as is conveyed by the enigmatic Psalm and the multi-part Mother of Pearl. Stranded also introduces violinist Eddie Jobson, whose contributions slotted in perfectly alongside reed player Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera. There is no denying that this incarnation of the band represents Ferry's vision and the album provides the ideal structure for Ferry's quirky themes and style. Here on Limited Edition 180g Vinyl.

Often mislabeled demented-rock, the Skiantos were in reality an exception to the rule. This reissue of their second album is, therefore, a road to understanding to what degree rock music was putty in the hands of this band from Bologna, who away from cumbersome references to British and American rock chose to follow their own path to originality.

Their youthful and unprejudiced energy together with the personality of great thinkers became an oft-debated manifesto, but one that is destined to maintain its importance in the years to come. The album's cover art picturing an enormous dinosaur destroying a building is testimony to their ironic, but biting attack on institutions, which when translated into music paid homage both to Italy's eccentric singer/songwriter tradition as well as the heretic dialectics of coeval punk. The album was originally released in 1978 on the Cramps label, but not a day seems to have passed since then.

    Enemy/Lover

Dreamers of the Ghetto are a family band from Bloomington, IN, consisting of brothers Luke and Jonathan Jones, Luke's wife, Lauren and Marty Sprowles. After teasing blogs with enigmatic, homemade video clips for the past year, Indiana's most promising and perhaps most eccentric group finally unleashes their debut album, the stunning Enemy/Lover mixed by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket).

Dreamers of the Ghetto marries the sentiment of classic '80s film soundtracks to minimalist, romantic dream-rock, creating a unique environment that becomes almost instantly addicting. The triumphant, reach-for-the-stars attitude of veterans like U2 and Depeche Mode is paired with the gospel splendor of Spiritualized and ominous austerity of The xx, all carried by what Shaking Through calls the most amazing singer we've seen since Sharon Van Etten.

Dreamers of the Ghetto have mined a sound that is both timeless and nostalgic, and theyve done so with an earnest fearlessness and refreshing lack of irony. They are true, pure, and unbelievably powerful.

    I Can't Stand The Rain

This wonderful album, originally released in 1974 on the Memphis-based Hi Records label, deserved a wider audience than it ended up getting at the time. It played to Ann Peebles' greatest strength, her poised and sultry voice, and surrounded by the sparse, easy funkiness of the trademark Hi rhythm section and producer Willie Michell's perfect use of horns and strings, she sings like a resilient but scorned angel on this impressive set of songs about the darker side of love.

Her best song is here, the eccentric but brilliant I Can't Stand the Rain, along with a marvelous version of Joe Simon's (You Keep Me) Hangin' On, and perfect readings of a pair of Earle Randle songs in If We Can't Trust Each Other and I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down. Peebles sings her heart out, and with those bright-sounding Hi grooves behind her, it all comes together to make a classic album of dark, bouncy and beautiful Southern soul.

Flag is a 1988 album by the enterprising and influential Swiss electronica sound-art group Yello consisting of vocalist/conceptualist Dieter Meier and composer/arranger Boris Blank. By far the most successful pop export from their country, Yello has often been mentioned in the same breath as other legendary pop duos like the Pet Shop Boys, Wham, Eurythmics and Sparks.

Known for their signature mix of electronic collage music and manipulated audio-visual vocals, Flag boasts its lion's share of both as heard on the the seminal singles Tied Up, Blazing Saddles and The Race.

Their trans-global studio-trick-sound is a branch of music that defies categorization to this day. What can you possibly call a crossing of avant-garde pop, fake-rap and sound witchcraft with a headstrong mix of funk and humor, pre-techno and snappy woodwinds? You can call it idiosyncratic, eccentric and exceptional to start! 180g audiophile vinyl reissue from Music On Vinyl.
