    Mic City Sons

The third and final album by Heatmiser, a band led by Elliott Smith and Hampshire College buddy Neil Gust, released in 1996 on Caroline Records, is hailed by all as their best effort. Unfortunately, the record was released as the band was breaking up.

The duo of Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, that worked on both Elliott Smith solo albums for DreamWorks (XO and Figure 8), helped produce and record Mic City Sons. A true indie-rock classic that still sounds good today: if you are a fan of Elliott Smith you need this one as well. Here on 180 gram vinyl.

    New Moon

I kept recording more songs with no regard whether or not they were gonna be on anything. That's what I'm used to doing, recording all the time and not going, 'What should I record for this record?' Usually I put out whatever happened in the last six months. With this, I had way too many songs and no mechanism for picking between them.
Elliott Smith, Tape Op Magazine, 1996, on finishing Either/Or.

Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon. The album contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars). Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics. Only three songs have seen prior release all on compilations most extremely limited runs.

The final mixing for New Moon was done by Larry Crane, who is also the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults.

    Transatlanticism: 10th Anniversary Edition

Reissued For Its 10th Anniversary After Being Out Of Print For Years.

    Comes With 12-page Full-color Booklet

As musical lunacy goes, things have gotten as crazy as it gets for Death Cab for Cutie since 2002's You Can Play These Songs with Chords compilation. A wildly successful tour with Dismemberment Plan, a collaboration for singer Ben Gibbard with emo-electronic guru Dntel under the Postal Service moniker, and a whole new legion of fans swooning to Gibbard's lyrics as if he were a modern day answer to Kiss Me-era Robert Smith have all amassed considerable hype around Transatlanticism.

But the group proves themselves more than equal to the task, answering the call and proving the cynics wrong with their most focused and most mature work in their entire catalog. Transatlanticism wastes absolutely no time and dives in head first with The New Year, one of the most melodramatic openings to an album since the Smashing Pumpkins' Tonight, Tonight from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The mellow, mixed-meter percussion and dense atmosphere of Lightness is a brilliant lead into the pop-happy Expo '86 and The Sound of Settling before setting up the climatic and intensely dramatic title track. Unconsciously taking a page from Blur's Sing, the hypnotic drumming and guitar call and responses through the eight-minute climax of the album are backed with a singalong finale that unquestionably will have every audience on the next tour singing along and holding up their lighters.

And while most albums would be left exhausted after such a track, the group keeps things moving, albeit at a much slower pace than compared to the anthems that packed the first half. Gibbard seamlessly makes the transition between songs that full out rock to songs that are comparable to Elliott Smith's finest hour with great ease. But it's Gibbard's poetic lyrics and signature introspection that remain a bench mark for Death Cab; and it's the group's maturity as musicians as well as songwriters that make Transatlanticism such a decadently good listen from start to finish. The band has never sounded more cohesive, the track sequencing is brilliant, and it caps off a triumphant year for not only Gibbard, but a band whose time and greater recognition is finally due.

    Roman Candle

Kill Rock Stars is proud to re-issue Roman Candle, Elliott Smith's first solo album, originally released on Portland's Cavity Search Records in 1994. The album has now been remastered for the re-release by Roger Seibel (SAE) and Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family. Originally released in very limited LP quantity, this is the first time that Roman Candle is widely available on both standard and 180g vinyl.

Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all through Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just missed something very, very special. The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those life changing moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heart wrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise before or since.

    Sing Elliott Smith

The title is about as self-explanatory as could be: 'Seth Avett & Jessica Lea
Mayfield sing Elliott Smith.' 12 songs originally written by the acclaimed and wellloved
Smith, performed by 2 artists, currently known for their contributions to the
indie folk rock landscape. The recordings are, in many cases, defined by bare
instrumentation, driven by a simple yet bold vocal delivery, the depth of feeling
    complimenting that of the subject matter. This album is an obvious labor of love;
a comment based on the genuine reverence which Avett and Mayfield clearly
hold for Smith. At times, the songs feel light as a feather, while in others, thematically
leaden with heartache, they are given a deep breath, a different dimension,
a new color. In modern fashion, melodies intensely whispered by Elliott Smith
are sung in a harmonious way, akin to the folk aesthetic of Gillian Welch and

    Shame Shame

There was this feeling inside me going into making this record that we'd never made an album before, says guitarist/vocalist Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog's Shame, Shame, their Anti-debut and the first album made outside the safe confines of their home studio. Having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album making process into one that favored the energy of their live performances, they knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) was brought in to help peel back the intricate arrangements of last album Fate to reveal the raw immediacy of a tight five-man unit honing their craft.

Dr. Dog has created a song cycle of doubt and despair, bookended with the woozily swirling harmonies of Leaman's lonely opener Stranger and the harsh self-critique of the title track, a gnarled admission that sometimes it's best to admit your mistakes and move on. Their most openly autobiographical release, ranging from McMicken's exploration of West Philly underlife in Shadow People to his account of two soul-bearing late night conversations in Jackie Wants a Black Eye, Shame, Shame is an album whose dark themes are soothed by bright harmonies, taut guitar riffs, and soaring melodies. Shame, Shame is the release that will announce Dr. Dog to a wider world, a world waiting for the timeless songwriting and melodies of their finest album.

From Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Weakerthans' lyrical music speaks of the vast open spaces and broken industrial dreams in which it was created. Founded in 1997, they hold deep roots in the indie scene, and have three albums and over 90,000 sales behind them. On their new release, literary lyrics could stand alongside a Raymond Carver or Russell Banks short story, while the music channels the spirit of punk, alt-country, and barroom rock and folk. For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

Surfer Blood are back with the follow up to last year's Tarot Classics EP and 2010's Astro Coast. Pythons is their debut on Warner Bros.

The album was produced by Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo and the Bunnymen) and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices). The Bronx (V)

V, the 5th album by LA punk band The Bronx, was produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, FIDLAR), and follows the band's alter-ego's 2014 album Mariachi El Bronx III. Guitarist Joby Ford says of V: 'It has the angst and social commentary that has characterized us from the beginning, only now the angst is aimed at more than just superficial things and the social commentary is directed at more than just people who like different music than us.' If it sounds like they've grown up, fear not - Bronx V is every bit as ferocious and hard-hitting as previous albums and filled with enough aggression to demolish a small house.

    Impersonator

With rich vocals atop quiet looped waves of
white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds,
Montreal songwriter Devon Welsh aka Majical
Cloudz, is one of 2013's most unique and
    essential new voices.

His 2012 Turns Turns Turns EP, an audacious
distillation of Welsh's ideas that brought his
vocals to the fore. "Musically, I wanted to try
saying 'no' to possibilities, and create negative
space in the songs," he says. "To put the
emphasis on the voice and lyrics."

    Impersonator brings Welsh's songs into
even sharper focus; its expressive power and
swagger belie the extremely minimal music.
These are intensely lyrical songs about death,
    patience, family, friendship, and desire.
Welsh cites Elliott Smith and Arthur Russell as
the two biggest influences on his songwriting.
While Impersonator sounds like neither, Smith's
lyricism is evident, as is Russell's ability to distill
a number of seemingly contradictory stylistic
ideas into a single focused statement.

Though they stand stylistically apart from
other artists in their Montreal scene - which
includes Grimes, Doldrums, Blue Hawaii, Mac
DeMarco, and others - Majical Cloudz are proud
    beneficiaries of its camaraderie.

    Cody

Cody isn't an album that changed everything for Joyce Manor, but Joyce Manor had to change a bit to make their album Cody. Since the release of their 2014 Epitaph debut Never Hungover Again, guitarist and singer Barry Johnson has taught himself the meditation techniques championed by the Beatles and director David Lynch, and he found he was suddenly wide open. Before, songs were labor; now they were revelations, appearing almost fully formed in his head before he had time to even catch them on a voicemail to himself.

For Cody, the band camped out in the studio for two months with producer Rob Schnapf, credited on classics by Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices, Saves The Day and Rancid, all in the Joyce Manor record collections, of course. With Schnapf's help, they'd explore deeper arrangements, new pre-production techniques, and different ways of working both together and with someone else. Johnson says, "It was the first time we really used the studio to our advantage. I felt like I could get a better grasp on what we could do. We always recorded like a punk band-go in and lay 'em down! Just get good takes! And this time we tried a lot more."

For Cody, they added new drummer Jeff Enzor to the band alongside bassist Matt Ebert and guitarist Chase Knobbe. With Rob Schnapf's able help as a de facto fifth member of the band, Joyce Manor found itself bristling with inspiration. Now more than ever, says Johnson, he felt he could trust himself and his bandmates to take the risks to make the music they wanted to make. The result is a record that dares to be humble, intimate and unapologetically human.

    St. Catherine

Unfurling out of Los Angeles this July comes St. Catherine, Matt Mondanile's fifth outing as Ducktails. The new album emerges from the roots of Mondanile's previous work, from the free-form, ambient bedroom experiments of seminal underground release Landscapes (2009), to 2013's eighties pop re-imagination The Flower Lane, but ultimately moves Ducktails on to a more refined, personal and sincere place.

St. Catherine is a finely-honed collection of baroque pop songs that take the blissful, cascading melodic fretwork that Mondanile has made his signature with both Ducktails and his other band, Real Estate, and applies it to songs of considerable new emotional heft and dynamic range.

Mondanile partially wrote and recorded St. Catherine over the course of 2014 and then finished off recording at the start of 2015. The longest time he has ever spent working on a record, it took place in bedrooms and studios predominantly in east LA and Glendale, but venturing as far as Berlin and New York as Mondanile worked on tracks around heavy periods of Real Estate touring.

When Mondanile finally settled back in LA at the start of 2015, it was Rob Schnapf, co-producer of Elliott Smith's classic albums XO and Either/Or, that he turned to in order to help put the finishing touches to St. Catherine. Together, the pair added a new crispness and punch to the record's more upbeat, psychedelic pop tracks (such as James Ferraro-featuring, lolloping lead single Headbanging In The Mirror, and the soaring Into The Sky), that recalls the artful muscularity of Smith's later work, whilst title track, the heavenly St. Catherine boasts one of Mondanile's greatest ever lead guitar lines and benefits greatly from Schnapf's warm, rich feel.
