Some Days Are Better Than Others

Temporary Residence has waited with eager anticipation to release Matthew Coopers spellbinding soundtrack to Some Days Are Better Than Others since before his creative breakthrough album, Similes (released under his more widely known Eluvium moniker) was even made. The film stars James Mercer (Broken Bells, The Shins) and Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney) as strangers whose lives occasionally intersect as they navigate their way through the struggles of personal attachment and disconnection.

When viewing the film, Cooper observed themes being presented regarding our throw-away society, and realized that both he and Some Days Are Better Than Others director Matt McCormick shared a common interest in this world of things left behind and the emotional baggage that is connected to it, whether broken or simply tossed aside for something new; something once considered the future, turning into antiquated rubble. Cooper decided that using a collection of damaged instruments would be a fitting way to underscore this aspect of the film.

A long-time collector of odds and ends and junked musical instruments, Cooper has amassed an impressive array of thrift store and garage sale keyboards, foot pedals, and electronics over the years, always hoping to discover the ghosts hidden within and the unique properties they may possess.

    Maze of Woods

Inventions are the collaborative sum of longtime friends Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Mark T. Smith of Explosions In The Sky. Their 2014 eponymous debut album introduced an ambition to create music that was both challenging and comforting. Their new album, Maze of Woods, opens with a vocal sample declaring, I wanted to do something that I don't know how to do. Using this as a mission statement, Inventions have crafted a complex and exuberant album from an array of instruments, samples, found sounds, beats, chants, and raw bursts of noise, with a much greater emphasis on strong vocal accompaniment in every song. Two albums released in the span of 10 months speaks to the drive that these two have felt since they started playing together. Much like on the first record, they again mixed the album in a house on the Oregon coastline, with final mixing and production all done by Smith and Cooper. Inventions have stated that much of the inspiration for Maze of Woods comes from the closing paragraph of Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. In that paragraph, Johnson describes the nonverbal howl of a feral wolf boy, a pre-language that is yearning and instinctual; a statement of wordless distress and love. Maze of Woods is the product of two masters of their craft getting lost in the wilderness, doing something that they don't know how to do, and emerging with something wholly unexpected and beguilingly beautiful.

    Inventions

Inventions is the new band formed by longtime friends,
tourmates, and labelmates Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and
Mark T. Smith of Explosions In The Sky. There are plenty of
talking points here: The fact that Cooper hasn't been in a
"band" of any sort since he was a teenager; no member of
Explosions In The Sky has released an album outside of the
context of EITS since their inception in the late 90s; and, of
course, this is a dream duo for anyone familiar with the
unparalleled emotional resonance of Cooper and Smith's
respective day jobs. However, thirty seconds into their
eponymous debut album, you realize that the esteemed
pedigree is irrelevant. Inventions exceeds all expectations by
discarding them from the get-go. They have created their own
tiny, wondrous corner of the world, one with ever-changing
    sounds and colors.

Inventions began in earnest last year when Cooper invited
Smith to collaborate on a song for Eluvium's otherworldly
double-album, Nightmare Ending. The track, "Envenom Mettle",
was a standout on an album full of them, and just like that a
longstanding friendship blossomed into a full-fledged creative
partnership. The following six months the duo continued to
send audio files back and forth to each other from their
respective homes in Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas. The
collaboration proved fruitful, inspiring, and truly enjoyable from
the outset, and in less than a year they had amassed more than
an album's worth of material. They traveled together to a
secluded beach house on the Oregon coast to complete the
album, an environment that proved not only highly productive
but also clearly influential on the album's windswept beauty and
warm vibrations. Across eight songs the duo explore the
delicate and disturbing - and virtually everything in-between -
with majestic abandon. It's the kind of beauty and brilliance that
only masters of their craft can accomplish when all egos and
expectations are cast aside in pursuit of the splendor of sound.

    A NDO C Y

"Hauschka's ingenuity to rework his instrument into a entire orchestra is astounding." - CMJ

"Inspired concept, superlative execution." - Uncut

Last year Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann) released
Abandoned City, an album of stately prepared piano pieces
inspired by forgotten locales that have been left to retreat
back into nature. It was a gorgeous, uniquely evocative
album that drew universal acclaim and elevated
Hauschka's reputation as an elite modern composer.

A NDO C Y is a continuation of the Abandoned City story,
told as a tale of two sides. Side A features five tracks
conceived during the Abandoned City sessions, a suite of
songs that together form an exceptionally resonant whole.
As with Abandoned City, these songs owe as much to
minimalist techno as modern composition, which makes
them particularly conducive to remixes. On Side B,
experimental folk icon Devendra Banhart distills
Abandoned City standout, Agdam, to barely-there,
fractured clusters of solitary piano strikes and swelling
synths. By comparison, Eluvium's transformation of
Stromness sounds almost shockingly euphoric, all
cascading waves of distortion washed over a plethora of
    plucked piano pings.

Included as a special bonus download is a stunning live
album recorded in Yufuin, Japan in late 2014. The
40-minute performance is split into two 20-minute
improvisations built on themes from Abandoned City. It's a
gorgeous glimpse of live Hauschka, a world where songs
you think you know become entirely new works of art at the
    mercy of Bertelmann's whims.

    Blood Bunny/Black Rabbit

Befitting of The Black Heart Procession, Blood Bunny/Black Rabbit takes the experimentation hinted at on last years critically lauded Six and expands upon it in bizarre and brilliant ways. Centered around three stunning new songs, the collection is arranged and mixed as one continuous composition, sounding every bit like an LSD-influenced DJ set in the kind of terrifying but strangely alluring vampire sex den commonly seen in True Blood. Its the ideal atmosphere for The Black Heart Procession, where they feel most comfortable and sound most in control.

The set is rounded out by a series of remixes, most notably the eccentric freak-out Freeze by legendary dub pioneer Lee Scratch Perry and ambient electronic luminary Eluviums 10-minute orchestral reconstruction of the solitary piano ballad Drugs. Jenkins remixes a couple of tunes himself under the guise of Mr. Tube, and San Diego electronic producers Jamuel Saxon close the album with an unlikely downtempo dance reworking of Drugs that transforms the songs morose lyrics into a meditative, almost hopeful trance.

If Blood Bunny/Black Rabbit was supposed to be a stop-gap between albums, no one seems to have told the band as much. It is easily one of The Black HeartProcessions more compelling and intriguing releases of their extensive and impressive catalog.
