    The Very Best Of Enya

The Very Best of Enya is the second greatest hits album by the Irish singer, songwriter and musician Enya. It was originally released on November 23, 2009, by Warner Music internationally and on December 1, 2009, by Reprise Records in the United States. After promoting her previous studio album And Winter Came... (2008), Warner Music asked Enya to release a new compilation of her favourite songs of her career, and chose a selection with her longtime collaborators, producer and arranger Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan.

The album peaked at number 32 on the UK Albums Chart and number 55 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. It spent a total of 56 weeks at number one on the Billboard New Age Albums chart. In a departure from her previous releases, Enya did not promote the album with interviews, appearances, or live performances.

    Dark Sky Island

The Enya creative triumvirate - Enya, producer and sound engineer Nicky Ryan, and lyricist Roma Ryan - started work on the album in the spring of 2012. Inspired by Roma's work on a series of poetry books themed around islands and specifically the island of Sark's decision to be designated as a dark sky island, the album's title track was the first song to be written for the collection.

The album's buoyantly optimistic first single Echoes in Rain possesses an irresistible surge of globe-trotting euphoria which made it an obvious choice as the album's lead track. While it shares the adventurous themes of Enya's breakthrough hit Orinoco Flow, its rhythmic march instead celebrates the anticipation of a journey's end.

    Watermark

Watermark is the second studio album from the Irish musician Enya. Following her first album, Enya (1986), produced for the BBC documentary The Celts, Enya signed with WEA, giving her complete artistic freedom on a follow up with no interference from the label. Watermark displays Enya's distinct sound of layered vocals, keyboard sounds, and elements of Celtic music. The album is seen by some as a seminal example of new-age music, though Enya does not consider her music to be of the genre.

    The Celts

Born Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year. --Sam Sutherland

    Imaginaryland

Petra Haden made a career performing or recording alongside everyone from Beck to Mike Watt, Susanna Hoffs to Bill Frisell. On her solo debut, Imaginaryland, originally released in 1996, she introduces a new phase of her career by overdubbing wordless A-Cappella adventures into pop soundscapes creating original compositions as well as covers of Enya and Miranda Sex Garden. Her's is a unique vision and a unique voice that takes you to a land filled with cartwheels, tingly mint tea and razzle-dazzle raspberry twigs.

    Agaetis Byrjun

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub Hopelandic--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening Svefn-G-Englar that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on Flugufrelsarinn, or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of Ny Batteri.
