    Epoch

    Epoch is the final album in the trilogy beginning with 2011's Dive, then 2014's Awake. This period between Dive and Epoch marks a significant maturation for Scott Hansen's continually expanding project, one that has taken him from a solo performer and bedroom artist to fronting a live 4-piece band on large stages across the world.


    Epoch hones the sonic aesthetic of Dive while drawing on the kinetic energy of Awake, it explores darker themes and new musical territory. The album was produced and recorded by Hansen predominantly in his home studio in Berkeley, California. The album was arranged alongside long-time collaborator and partner in the project, Zac Brown. Brown contributed bass and guitar parts to the songwriting process. Rory O'Connor performed drums on the album. Hansen sees Epoch as a multi-dimensional artistic vision at the confluence of his graphic design work via ISO50 and music with Tycho. The graphic presentation of album artwork is as important as the music itself. The keystone is the central image of Epoch and the colors scheme red and black. This is a stark contrast to the almost rainbow palette of Awake.

    1970 was truly a successful turning point year for hard rock legends Deep Purple. The band changed directions and after recording a series of well received albums in the late '60s, they returned to the studio with a new Mark II band line-up and recorded the epoch game changer Deep Purple In Rock.


    This superstar act now featured the much revered line up of the original guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore, keyboard great Jon Lord, power drummer Ian Paice, and new cohorts, the superlative Roger Glover on bass and soon to be superstar vocalist Ian Gillan. Deep Purple and their masterwork Deep Purple In Rock truly paved the way for a lot of the hard rock and metal bands of today with the music contained on this legendary release.


    As with their continuing expansion into the Deep Purple catalog, Friday Music announces the first time 180g Audiophile Vinyl release of the original U.S. version of Deep Purple In Rock. This mega hard rock classic comes with all of the great tunes you remember like Speed King, Child In Time, Hard Lovin Man and Living Wreck.


    Like their other fine Deep Purple releases, this classic has been mastered by Joe Reagoso (Deep Purple/Yes/Alice Cooper) from the original Warner Bros. tapes at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA.

    As their name implies, when Spider Bags hook into you,
    it's hard to shake the hold. --PITCHFORK


    Formed in 2005, Chapel Hill, North Carolina's Spider Bags were largely a
    revolving cast, with only Dan McGee (guitars, vocals) persevering through
    the various incarnations of the band. But during the 2011 recording of Shake
    My Head, the current lineup consisting of Steve Oliva (bass) and Rock Forbes
    (drums) was finally solidified. Building upon the foundation laid down by
    its predecessor, Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians
    who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few
    years. "When we started this record, we weren't even thinking about it being
    released. We just did it to have fun and keep moving forward," says Forbes.
    This approach allowed the band to push itself further out into the
    psychedelic frontier than ever before, aided by engineer/producer Wesley
    Wolfe. Recorded mostly live over the course of a few days, there's an
    exhilarating urgency to the record, as heard in riff-driven rockers like "Back
    With You Again in the World" and "Chem Trails." The band brings the
    tempo down a notch for "Coffin Car," which finds them mining an ominous
    morbidity over one of their prettier chord patterns. "We Got Problems"
    comes on like a true acid trip, alternating between utter terror and unfettered
    joy. Featuring a heavy and repetitive pattern, a slew of effected guitars, and
    searing guest leads from Superchunk's Mac McCaughan, the song
    encapsulates an entire Spider Bags epoch in under six minutes. Frozen Letter is
    the band's fourth full-length record overall and first for Merge Records.

    Zs is devoid of genre and unclassifiable. Since 2000, founder Sam Hillmer has remained its purveying constant, and with the addition of loose-limbed, meditative percussionist Greg Fox (Liturgy, Guardian Alien, Man Forever), and virtuosic avant-classical guitarist and composer Patrick Higgins, the band has found its epochal lineup. The trio's vision is crystallized on Xe, Zs' first full-length featuring the new trio, and first proper since 2010's critically acclaimed New Slaves. Hillmer, Fox and Higgins-three supremely heavy sages who exchange their pulsating phraseology with a mind-blowingly telepathic bent-in one room, nailing Xe in one miraculous live take, manned by Higgins and noted A-list producer Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Mick Jagger) at the boards in Hudson, New York's Future-Past Studios. The music on Xe even transcends artistic mediums, influencing renowned visual artist Tauba Auerbach, who believed Zs was examining the same structural concerns as her own work. She created two 3D steel helix sculptures derived from the scientific varieties known as the Z helix and S helix, which were then arranged and photographed in various configurations for the Xe album art. The album's minimalist, esoteric vibes aligned perfectly with Auerbach''s mind-bending and shadowy metallic sculptures. The artist attests to have never worked so hard on a record cover, nor gotten so much out of doing so, creatively and personally.

    Paramount is impossible to characterize in the usual terms of A-meets-B direct influence: maybe you hear Burn, maybe you hear Outburst or Beyond or Supertouch, but no combination of such references conveys the subtlety of the songwriting, the precision of the musicianship, or the ferocity of Jeremy Stith's vocal performance, by way of which one encounters the best written and most cleverly phrased hardcore lyrics in recent memory. Paramount is, as they say in the groves of academe, sui generis.


    And yet to apprehend the lyric sheet's overt intertextuality (no less than Shakespeare, Don Delillo and Praise's Andy Norton, among others, are given co-writing credit), to hear the multiplicity of guest vocalists, to spend the 12 minutes required to read the voluminous thanks list - all this is to know, as the band itself surely does, that Paramount belongs no more to the individuals who recorded it than to the entire roiling, loving, terrifying, inspiring, hateful, romantic, literate, ignorant, fantastically dynamic culture that gave rise to it.

    All of the internal magnetic circuit parts are Swiss screw machined or molded metal, which have tolerances on the order of the best Swiss-made watches. The specially designed diamond stylus, for the first time in a Grado, is mounted on a sapphire cantilever that connects to the stylus generating system.     Little Richard had been making records for four years before he rolled into Cosimo Matassa's J&M Studio in New Orleans and cut the epochal Tutti Frutti in the fall of 1955, but everything else he'd done -- and much of what others had recorded -- faded into insignificance when Richard wailed A wop bop a loo mop a lomp bomp bomp and kicked off one of the first great wailers in rock history. In retrospect, Little Richard's style doesn't seem so strikingly innovative as captured in 1956's Here's Little Richard -- his boogie-woogie piano stylings weren't all that different from what Fats Domino had been laying down since 1949, and his band pumped out the New Orleans backbeat that would define the Crescent City's R&B for the next two decades, albeit with precision and plenty of groove. But what set Richard apart was his willingness to ramp up the tempos and turn the outrage meter up to ten; Tutti Frutti, Rip It Up, and Jenny Jenny still sound outrageous a half-century after they were waxed, and it's difficult but intriguing to imagine how people must have reacted to Little Richard at a time when African-American performers were expected to be polite, and the notion of a gay man venturing out of the closet simply didn't exist (Richard's songs were thoroughly heterosexual on the surface, but the nudge and wink of Tutti Frutti and Baby is faint but visible, and his bop threads, mile-high process, and eye makeup clearly categorized him as someone different). These 12 tunes may not represent the alpha and omega of Little Richard's best music, but every song is a classic and unlike many of his peers, time has refused to render this first album quaint -- Richard's grainy scream remains one of the great sounds in rock & roll history, and the thunder of his piano and the frantic wail of the band is still the glorious call of a Friday night with pay in the pocket and trouble in mind. Brilliant stuff.

Witness it in life-size proportion, his solos working in tandem with and against the driving rhythms. Garlands swaggering piano lines? Visualize the 88 keys as he hits full stride, the chords and fills slithering around skeletal frameworks.


    If anything, Milestones is as famous for its title track as the players that produced it. The launching pad for many of Davis (and later, his contemporaries) improvisational flights, the singular piece invites the tessellated explorations Coltrane would forever chase as well as the headliners argyle solo work, who broaches territories that far exceed what he had done with his bop-rooted past. Every song is a highlight, whether its the bravado No Jackle, featuring a hot-foot pace and bebop strains, or Sids Ahead, which continues the albums blues theme while tossing around edgy harmonics and inside-out structures.


    Then theres Straight, No Chaser, the absolutely definitive rendition of Thelonious Monks signature piece. Coltranes marbled playing pulls at the tunes lobed borders, Adderley takes liberty with solos, and Davis dances around his mates, at one point quoting When the Saints Go Marching In while demonstrating his knowledge of tradition and eye towards the future. A milestone if there ever was. And now, in resplendent mono.

    Russia in the year 1953. After the October Revolution this was probably one of the most eventful epochs in the whole of the 20th century as far as social development and Art were concerned. When Stalin's reign of terror at last came to an end Shostakovich was able to realize his artistic ideas without fear of political persecution. And this is precisely the reason for regarding the premiere performance of his Tenth Symphony, in December 1953, as a gesture of freedom after years of discrimination. Shostakovich wanted his music to reflect human feelings and passions - and indeed the rugged first movement is filled with melancholy. Many biographers have identified a brutal portrait of the dictator Stalin in the strained mechanism and whip-lash rhythm of the following Allegro. The third and fourth movements take on a brighter character and are filled with song-like melody which leads to a splendid Finale.



    Herbert von Karajan and his Berlin orchestra made the present recording just a few years after the work's composition; even today it is still considered one of the very best performances of this unique work.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas, Holly was nicknamed Buddy by his mother. She felt that his given name was too big for her little boy. Holly, the altered form of his last name, would later result from a misspelling in his first recording contract. Holly learned to play piano and fiddle at an early age, while his older brothers taught him the basics of guitar.


    In early 1956, Holly and his band began recording demos and singles in Nashville under the name Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes, but the group's lineup was later revised and dubbed The Crickets. Holly wrote and recorded his breakthrough hit, That'll Be the Day, with The Crickets in 1957. The song's title and refrain are a reference to a line uttered by John Wayne in the 1956 film The Searchers. Between August 1957 and August 1958, Holly and the Crickets charted seven different Top 40 singles.


    Composer and singer John Fogerty, of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame, inducted Buddy Holly into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame at the 1986 Hall of Fame induction ceremony. What Buddy Holly meant to him, Fogerty said, was destiny calling. Fogerty, 12, bought That'll Be The Day and soon began dreaming of forming his own combo, like the group of musicians - The Crickets - he saw on the album cover. And in Liverpool, England, the same thing was going on with four other guys. They named their group The Beatles, because Buddy Holly's group was called The Crickets.


    We are, each of us, made up of the people we love and the people we admire, Fogerty, said. We take those reflections, and hopefully, grow.


    Holly's talented life was cut short in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, that also claimed the lives of Ritchie Valens and J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson. This album is a tribute to what was, and what might have been a lengthy pioneering musical career.

    Four years ago Wymond Miles, guitar player and songwriter in San Franciscos The Fresh & Onlys, began writing solo material thematically based on the concepts of eschatology, anthroposophy, and Gnostic and Hermetic symbolism. Drawing from a vast musical pool of inspiration, including Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt, Arvo Part, and Nikki Sudden amongst others, Earth Has Doors is Miles first solo release.


    These songs concisely yet esoterically document the existential crisis of our current epoch, moving from the nothingness of modern materialism, fragmented reductionist thought, and drug escapism to a world imbued with subjectivity and meaning through a new relationship with the Earth and cosmos as alive and full of inherent intelligence.


    Wymond describes his early writing process: For the first time I had a sense of place, and a reverence of humility for my surroundings. I was full of wonder, but I felt very small, and went inward to begin the work of writing. He elaborates, Sonically the mood had to reflect the somberness of moving between the existential chaos of my twenties into this new perspective of living. The mysterious hues of the soundscape reflect a sense of curiosity and possibility in the canyons of sound.


    Working in his home studio and using 8 track tape (the infamous Tascam 388), Miles performs almost everything on this record: guitars, synths, bass, drums, manipulated tape delay, and vocals. A few friends played with him, guesting on drums (Hidden Things, Earth Has Doors) and viola (As the Orchard), while his wife Sarah sings some harmonies on side A.

    The Three-Cornered Hat (Speakers Corner)

    The very fact that Manuel de Falla composed his ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) for the ambitious impresario Serge Diaghilev and his epoch-making Ballets Russes indicates the historical importance of this work. Although the Impressionistic character of the musical language reflects his studies with Debussy, the composer never once renounces his native origins. Overflowing with the thrilling rhythms and electrifying melodies of Spanish folkmusic, this work achieved worldwide popularity virtually overnight.



    As so often before in this genre, the Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet proves once again in this DECCA recording that he is a power to be reckoned with. The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande executes the slightest nuance, the most exquisite of figures and gentlest lyrical tone with meticulous precision. Powerful rolls of thunder, the click of castanets, lively rhythms and rich sonority conjure up a picture of fiery Spanish temperament so tangibly before our eyes that any comment on the recording quality appears almost superfluous. In a nutshell: this record is, quite simply, incredibly good.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    To be sure: no other 20th-century ballet music has ever created such a commotion as this ancient rite of spring: it began with a turmoil which developed into a full-scale brawl at the premiere performance in the concert hall, was sung hymns of praise and suffered devastating reviews by critics who tore the work apart, and led up to the musico-philosophical libel written in the Fifties by that self-acclaimed "chief enemy" of Stravinsky, W. A. Adorno.



    This thrilling, epoch-making masterpiece remains fascinating to this very day thanks to its bloodcurdling rhythms, its secretive, intertwined melodies, and the boiling, seething, and lashing of the titanic instrumental forces. And Sir Georg Solti and his phenomenal orchestra certainly ensure that all this is brought over to the listener. The notes of the lyrical passages simply fly out of the loudspeakers with the lightness and airyness to which one is accustomed with DECCA recordings from this era. But one can still be astounded by this audiophile work of art: such a gentle, voluminous, lashing and pounding sound-storm is only normally heard live in the concert hall. And precisely because this recording sounds so marvellous, it tops the vinyl charts in the American specialist magazine The Absolute Sound.
