UNIM-BLU-6715xRobert Glasper Experiment
Black RadioThe Robert Glasper Experiment's Blue Note Records/EMI release Black Radio is a future landmark recording that boldly stakes out new musical territory and transcends any notion of genre, drawing from jazz hip-hop, R&B and rock, but refusing to be pinned down by any one tag.
The first full-length album from the Grammy-nominated keyboardist's electric Experiment band (Casey Benjamin/sax & vocoderist, Derrick Hodge/bass and Chris Dave/drummer) also features many of Glasper's famous friends from the spectrum of urban music, seamlessly incorporating appearances from a jaw-dropping roll call of special guests including Erykah Badu, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Shafiq Husayn, KING, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, Stokley Williams and Mos Def.
Throughout, the Experiment wears its eclecticism on its sleeve, presenting new collaborative originals and surprising cover songs. New Amerykah Part 1 (4th World War)Universal Motowns multi-platinum-selling, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter/actress Erykah Badu returns to the music scene with her new album New Amerykah featuring the debut single Honey. Laced with Erykahs bluesy grit and MC style vocals, the song is bolstered by producers 9th Wonders razor sharp hip hop beats. Badu describes the song as an old school track with some funk on it. Badu has enlisted some of the most talented, groundbreaking underground producers and engineers in the hip-hop game to support her breakthrough return, including Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder (Jay-Z, Nas, Mary J. Blige), Madlib, Mike Chav Chavarria and R&B singer Bilal. The music is the star, says Erykah, I just laid down my vocals and let the music breathe while the melodies tell the stories. The album is part one of the series New Amerykah Part 1 & 2.
Badu, a Dallas native, emerged in 1997 with her masterpiece debut album Baduizm as a primal force of nature connecting old school soul with contemporary R&B. The album takes listeners on a journey through the group s self-created ecosystem, populated with songs each embodying its own mini-cinematic sonic soundscape. The album is the hotly anticipated follow-up to their celebrated 2013 debut album, Tawk Tomahawk. Choose Your Weapon was conceived on stages worldwide and honed in the studio by the band Nai Palm (vocals/guitar), Paul Bender (bass), Perrin Moss (drums/percussion) and Simon Mavin (keyboards) transforming the songs into exquisite pieces of music, pushing the boundaries of their comfort zone.
In addition to capturing the imagination of fans around the world with their innovative sound, Hiatus Kaiyote has also captured the attention of acclaimed musicians and media. Stereogum singled them out as a Band to Watch and Giles Peterson (BBC Worldwide) named them Breakthrough Artist of 2013. Legendary producer/songwriter Salaam Remi handpicked Hiatus Kaiyote as the first signing for his Flying Buddha label, Everyone who has come in contact with our music has promoted it, says Nai Palm. Mama's Gun is the second studio album by Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu, released in 2000. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album incorporates Funk, Soul and Jazz styles. Covering themes of insecurity, social issues and personal relationships, Badu delivered a highly intimate and personal album that reached Platinum two months after its release. Mama's Gun features substantial contributions from several members of the Soulquarians outfit, of which Badu was a member. It also features guests such as soul singer Betty Wright and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.
The album contains the single Bag Lady which, with its colorful, artsy music video, shot to #1 on the R&B charts, and also into the Top 10 on the billboard charts. Bag Lady was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Also the song Didn't Cha Know? was nominated for Best R&B Song.
Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for taking chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime and went on to say she has taken her art to the next level. Entertainment Weekly called the album a '70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record.LP1

Everything's BeautifulEverything's Beautiful brings Miles Davis' sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles' incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. I didn't want to do just a remix record, Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art.
Knowing that Miles didn't have one audience, Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula; hip-hop producer Rashad Smith; Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J; jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis; and the legendary Stevie Wonder.1. The FallMastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio from the original source recordings!
200-gram audiophile vinyl pressing by Quality Record Pressings. Gatefold, tip-on jackets on heavy cardboard stock, deluxe high quality!
Part of Analogue Productions' reissue of the Norah Jones' solo catalog, featuring the individual albums Come Away With Me, Feels Like Home, Not Too Late, The Fall and Little Broken Hearts. Each album will also be featured in an exclusive LP box set to come that will include Norah's Covers album!
Norah has taken a new direction on The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Richly detailed and vocally lush on 200-gram, super-silent vinyl from Analogue Productions, The Fall, Jones' fourth album, may surprise some of Jones' die-hard fans, Billboard magazine notes. During the 13-song set, Jones ditches the gentle piano playing of her previous work and tears into fresh, beat-savvy arrangements, playing plenty of electric guitar and exploring the piercing quality of Wurlitzer electric piano. Jones' smoky voice and soulful veneer highlight the opening track and first single, Chasing Pirates.
Jones displays a slinky kind of ambience on Light As a Feather (co-written with Ryan Adams). The social commentary It's Gonna Be offers a garage-rock attitude, and You've Ruined Me has a rich Americana flavor. But Jones is still a little bit country (Tell Yer Mama) and a little bit rock'n'roll (Stuck). Overall, writes reviewer Gary Graff, Jones straddles those lines in an entirely different manner than she ever has before.
For The Fall, Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partners Jesse Harris and Richard Julian. Musicians include drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green) and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer).

Things Fall ApartImport
The fourth album by The Roots was recorded at Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios and released in 1999. Considered by critics as their breakthrough, Things Fall Apart was the first album of The Roots that exceeded half a million sold units.
Spin Magazine called the album a landmark moment for The Roots, as it 'swelled the Roots clique into a movement-style posse'. The Roots at this point employed D'Angelo on keyboards, Erykah Badu on backing vocals and rappers Mos Def, Common and Beanie Siegel also make appearances.
The band of charismatic drummer Questlove grew into THE defining Hip Hop band - there is no other, they are simply unmatched, becoming the benchmark.LP1

Cheers To The Fall (Awaiting Repress)With a style from decades before her time and a voice for the ages, Andra Day creates what she calls retro-pop-soul music. It's a blend of jazz, soul, doo-wop, plus a little bit of rock and a little bit of hip-hop as the underbelly, she says. As comfortable as she is with contemporary R&B, it is the emotions and voices of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu that call to Andra the loudest.
Cheers To The Fall, Andra's debut album, is what she calls a biography told in the form of soul music. The 13 tracks see her exploring relationships with both others and herself, grappling with past mistakes but ultimately finding forgiveness and truth.LP 1

Hiatus Kaiyote is the sound of serendipity. Every so often a band comes along that captures the collective imagination, a band that has all the essential elements in place to become a musical movement.
The music of Hiatus Kaiyote strikes the perfect note merging poetry and polyrhythms. Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can't be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional flamenco and music from Mali and Colombia have influenced the group. We could call it 'Future Soul'.
On the band's debut album Tawk Tomahawk (2012) it's as if the vast desert landscape has opened up, borrowing ingredients from far-reaching lands to concoct a distinctive flavor that is the essence of all its parts. Each song whispers of delicious, ancient stories untold.
Stereogum singled out Hiatus Kaiyote as a Band to Watch. Gilles Peterson named them the Breakthrough Artist of 2013. Questlove and Erykah Badu have gone out of their way to promote the band. Gentle SpiritJonathan Wilsons music is steeped equally in the woodsy contours of his Blue Ridge origins and the atmospheric guitar reveries of Neil Young and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Gentle Spirit, an expansive double set conceived specifically for vinyl, was recorded to analog tape and is remarkably evocative of that golden late 60s, early 70s period when rural and urban sensibilities colluded to produce some of rocks most imperishable recordings.
Gentle Spirit was recorded at his former studio in Laurel Canyon, the location of the very scene Wilson is credited with revitalizing through his personal studio and well-known jam sessions. In addition to making his own music, Wilson is also a producer, engineer and custom guitar-maker.
Whether hes producing young artists like the band Dawes or collaborating with renowned artists like Erykah Badu, Jackson Browne, Robbie Robertson or Elvis Costello, Wilson is as dedicated, visionary and soulful as anyone in music today, qualities that can be heard in the many textures, layers and easy born nuances prevalent throughout Gentle Spirit.1. AshIbeyi is set to release Ash via XL Recordings. Their first album, the eponymous Ibeyi, grappled with the past-the sister's relationship, origins, loss, and roots. It earned them fans and collaborators in some of the most iconic and crucial artists of today, BeyoncÉ, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre included. By contrast, Ash is a more visceral and potent political statement, and while firmly rooted in Afro-Cuban culture and history, finds itself entirely concerned with Ibeyi's present: Who Lisa-KaindÉ and Naomi are, what's important to them, and how they live today, especially given that the spheres, both personally and politically, are entirely different from when Ibeyi was recorded. It's also a testament to their cathartic live performances, where they're able to transmute a vast array of emotions-sorrow, anger, sensuality, happiness-to and through their fans.
Ash is also a study in deft electronic production. Ibeyi worked once again alongside XL head Richard Russell, a confidante, and friend, to produce Ash at his studio. "We absolutely wanted, 100%, to work with him again: It was not even a question," Lisa-KaindÉ says. "Richard is an amazing producer... wherever you want to go, he will guide you there. But it feels like you're playing with him. You're sharing ideas together and he has an amazing ear. It's like a flow, it's really easy." To that effect, Naomi adds: "It's like we produced the album too, actually, and it's a good feeling." Along with Russell's stylized production sensibilities, Ibeyi drew from a host of influences ranging from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu and Nina Simone and beyond, to craft the wide-ranging musical landscape of Ash.1. The FallFor this record, I just had a sound in my head, says Norah Jones. I wanted the grooves to be more present and heavy. And I also just wanted to do something different. Ive been hanging with the same group of musicians for a long time, and I thought it was a good time for me to work with different people and experiment a little.
The result of these experiments is the multiple Grammy Award-winners new album, The Fall. The album is an exciting evolution from her previous three releases, which have sold a combined 36 million copies worldwide. The first obvious change on The Fall is a lengthy list of new collaborators. Producer Jacquire King, who has worked with Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, and Tom Waits, among others, helped Jones put together a group of musicians, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). Golden SkiesIt speaks volumes for how long we've been waiting for the debut Brainfeeder album from Mono/Poly that when Flying Lotus first got in touch with him about doing something for the label, it was via Myspace. The wait, though, has been worth it. Specializing in a kind of beat-driven cosmic soundscape which he describes as "electronic-classical-alchemy music," Mono/Poly aka Charles Dickerson has drawn on the lessons he's learned from collaborating on last year's Thundercat album as well as the Flash Bang Grenada hip hop project with Busdriver and Nocando, and made a beautifully realized, endlessly expansive record.
From the first orchestral trills of "Winds of Change" you know you're in for something special. As the track builds the listener notices not only the content but also the production chops - this is a record which sounds exactly as big, glossy and up front as its creator wants it to. Rebekah Raff adds scintillating harp work to "Transit to the Gold Planet," but it's the way Dickerson integrates it and builds on it which is really special. "Ra Rise" sounds like sunbathing in space, Niki Randa's abstracted topline vocal warming you right through. Title track, "Golden Skies" uses a looping piano riff reminiscent of Bach, Thelonious Monk and Wu Tang on E, all at once, without sounding like any of them. Add sternum- thrumming bass to that and you know exactly what's what. "Alpha & Omega" does something clever with slowed down d&b licks and tweaked vocal snips. "Empyrean" features Mendee Ichikawa (of the band Free Moral Agents), an ethereal, ghostly presence. "Night Garden" sounds like a drive through the dark streets of an alternate LA. "Euphoria" uses a simple, military-style snare and then twines keyboard lines over it until it's lifted into the sky. Thundercat joins in on last track, "Gamma," and adds some perfectly-judged low-end riffing to anchor Dickerson's keyboard swirls.
Mono/Poly has been a name to watch since his debut, The George Machine, back in 2009. His 2011 EP release for Brainfeeder, Manifestations, was supported by artists as diverse as Radiohead and Erykah Badu and his work on Thundercat's Apocalypse established once and for all the quality of his productions. With Golden Skies he has laid down a marker to any other "beat maker" out there. Because with a genuine producer with this much talent, everyone else needs to aim a little bit higher - up towards the golden skies.1. Winds Of Change

Grow SlowThere was once a young African princess who embarked on a huge journey in pursuit of her dreams. She arrived at a mystical island covered in clouds where she met a cunning wizard...Sounds like the beginning of some Disney fantasy but the truth is not so different. The Princess is Sena who came from Accra, Ghana to a festival in the centre of Budapest, Hungary and met a musical wizard by the name of DJ Vadim... that was in 2005. What happened that night was the meeting not only of like minded souls, but the beginning of a future journey into sound and space. First came recordings for Vadim for the Soundcatcher album Talk To Me (2007 BBE) which was much lauded by Gilles Peterson at the time... Which led to a long process of creating an album. Much happened in between. Each had many of their own adventures.Grammy Award shows, sell out arena shows for Sena's band in Hungary - Irie Mafia - plus the birth of her beautiful daughter Kekeli and the release of her second solo album Lots Of Trees on French Soulbeats Records; world wide shenanagins for DJ Vadim with his groups, One Self, The Electric and many solo projects...Perhaps a good analogy would be the perfect pasta. One needs both to cook it exactly, not too hard or too soft and also a complimentary sauce. It takes time, love, effort and good ingredients. What's the result, simple but delicious and what a perfect combination Sena & Vadim make also.Perhaps add some chile pepper to bring out the African funk mixed with London tricknology from the grimey east London hoods and that's what it sounds like. It's not just soul but has a peppery kick, a proud African roar with somewhat a Caribbean touch. Then again, that's the Dubcatcher Vadim bringing his bass and skank to the mix. Betty Davis (Awaiting Repress)One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.
There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their "Lady Marmalade" for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't "Feelin' Bitchy" until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.
Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song "Uptown" for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix - personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'
But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.
In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name." The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.1. One can hardly imagine Prince, Erykah Badu, or Outkast without the influence of Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music. Betty penned the song ''Uptown'' for The Chambers Brothers and wrote the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending DIY ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal. In 1968, she married Miles Davis and quickly influenced him on the magic of psychedelic rock along with introducing him to Jimi Hendrix-personally inspiring the classic album, Bitches Brew.
Miles and Betty fans have long debated the truth of a near mythological session recorded in Studios B and E at Columbia's 52nd Street Studios on May 14th and 20th, 1969. The landmark session was produced by Miles and Teo Macero and featured Betty on vocals, accompanied by Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, guitarist John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock on keys, and Dylan/Miles session bassist Harvey Brooks. Other players included bassist Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys), saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and organist Larry Young. Now, Light In The Attic, with full support from Betty herself, presents these recordings to the public for the very first time. These historic sessions-never heard, never bootlegged-predate Miles' revolutionary album, Bitches Brew, and are the true birth of Miles' jazz-rock explorations, along with the roots for Betty's groundbreaking funk that came years later, starting with her self-titled debut in 1973. While, ultimately, these recordings would go unreleased for nearly half a century, they would greatly shape each of their careers.
The vibe is intrinsically unique, fresh, and futuristic-jazz heavyweights playing psychedelia, rock, and jazz-fusion long before the term became commonplace. The songs include Betty originals and covers of classics by Creedence and Cream. The concepts explored on these previously unheard sessions fueled concepts that wouldn't be fully realized until years later with Miles' seminal On The Corner.
Additionally, included here is the first time rerelease of a 1968 Columbia single, recorded in October 1968 at Columbia Studios in Los Angeles. The session was produced by Jerry Fuller and featured South African maverick Hugh Masekela on trumpet and arrangements, plus members of jazz-funk pioneers The Crusaders-including trombonist Wayne Henderson and pianist Joe Sample. Two of the three tracks included here from this session are previously unreleased.
This deluxe package is a treasure trove for both Betty and Miles fans, including rare documents from the pen of co-producer Teo Macero, rarely seen photos from legendary photographer Baron Wolman, and new interviews with Mrs. Davis herself, Harvey Brooks, and Hugh Masekela-the entire project overseen with Betty's full blessing.1.
