Liege And LiefVinyl LP repressing of this classic 1969 album by the British Folk legends. LIEGE & LIEF was the fourth album by Fairport Convention. It was the third and final album the group released in the UK in 1969, all of which prominently feature Sandy Denny as lead female vocalist. Although Denny quit the band even before the album's release, Fairport Convention has continued to the present day to make music almost exclusively within the traditional British Folk idiom, and are still one of the artists most strongly associated with it.1. Strange CountryNew West Records is proud to present Strange Country, the new full-length album from the young and gifted cousin-duo Kacy & Clayton. The ten-song collection was recorded over seven freezing Canadian winter days at Ghetto Box Studios, a historic community hall turned studio. The product of a lifetime of deep kinship, the record showcases the purity and astounding beauty of Kacy Anderson's voice, one that has been notably compared to Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny. Only Clayton Linthicum's intricate guitar work, expert time changes and vocal harmonies could forge the foundation for Kacy's voice to soar even higher - the result being an enormously satisfying and organic album. Drawing a wide swath of inspirations ranging from the Greenwich Village folk scene to the ancestral music of Southern Appalachia and the British Isles, the cousins fashion songs steeped in those traditions, simultaneously paying homage and building on those sounds.1. The Holy Ground (Pure Pleasure)
Irish singer Mary Black is well known for deftly combining her Celtic roots with contemporary folk. On this release, she offers another strong set of songs, as she interprets songs from American folk favorite John Gorka (Treasure Island) and connects with Anglo-folk tradition on the lovely One Way Donkey Ride (written by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention fame). The acoustic instrumentation feature a rich blend of guitars, fiddles, saxophones, and accordions that add a timeless feel to most of her songs. The highlight of the album is Loving Time, an emotional story of star-crossed lovers told with a bittersweet aching that few artists could deliver so poignantly. While a few songs towards the end of the album suffer from middle-of-the-road, adult easy listening arrangements, Mary Black's voice remains an incredibly expressive instrument that makes this another solid effort.

- Dave Early (drums, conga, percussion)
- Garvan Gallagher (bass)
- Frank (vocals, violin, whistle)
- Declan Sinnott (guitar, mandolin)
- Pat Crowley (keyboards, accordian)
- Carl Geraghty (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)
- Mel Mercier (percussion)

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Summer Sent You

In The Club (Awaiting Repress)Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol are hugely important figures in the history of British Folk Rock and Folk music since the 1960's. They were both key figures in British Folk Rock super group Fairport Convention and appeared on their seminal album Liege and Lief (1969) which initiated the electric folk movement. In fact BBC radio 2 listeners have voted Liege and Leaf the 'Most influential folk album of all time'.
Dave Swarbrick has been described the most influential British fiddle player bar none. After 1970 he emerged as Fairport Convention's leading figure and guided the band through a series of important albums until its disbandment in 1979. Simon Nicol was a founder member of Fairport Convention and is the only founding member still in the band... In 1973 he played on what is often considered one of the important folk/jazz albums of all time, John Martyn's Solid Air.
After Fairport Convention called it a day in 1979, Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol joined forces and spent the early eighties playing folk clubs throughout the UK as an acoustic duo. Their repertoire was drawn from various sources - including Fairport Convention material, Dave Swarbrick's late seventies/early eighties solo albums and also several tracks that were individual to the duo. The acoustic duo proved popular and recorded three albums. Two of those, the 1981 live album 'Live at the White Bear', and the 1984 studio effort 'Close to the Wind', were re-issued a few years back on Fairport Convention's own Woodworm Records label.Side A:

FainRecorded in a beautiful and isolated house in the Yorkshire Dales, Fain is the sound of a band at the peak of their creative powers. It's an honest and natural album that allows its stories, its melodies, its themes and structures to breathe. The album draws on more traditional English and Scottish folk melodies than anything they've done before, but not straying from the drop-out fuzz-rock route they've made their own, the influences are vast - British rock bands like Groundhogs, Dark, Mighty Baby and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac are evident in the swirling and distorted guitars throughout Fain, along with the 60s revival folk of Fairport Convention, Nic Jones, and Trees. Additionally they have looked towards Scandinavian's rich psychedelic tradition both new and old - you can hear the likes of Mecki Mark Men, Mikael Ramel and contemporaries Dungen. You can even hear the band's teenage forays into Hip-Hop in the drums of 'Thief' and 'Athol'.
It rained constantly throughout the recording process and the house was so packed with gear and recording equipment the band were forced to sleep in tents and caravans parked outside. Whilst performing, they could look out into the vast countryside and catch sight of buzzards, hares, curlews and hundreds upon hundreds of crows and gulls. The fire was on permanently, overnight and throughout the day. A serene experience that informs every track on the album. It was mixed and finished in the equally rainy London, with additional performances from Olivia Chaney on piano and backing vocals, plus Nic Kearey and Rachel Davies of Stick in the Wheel and Various (XL). Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) recorded backing vocals in Vancouver remotely for All Returns.
As evidenced by the first single All Returns, Fain is more lyrically focused than anything they've previously recorded.. The song tells the story of a dream Jack Sharp (guitars/vocals) had during which an acquaintance had looked into his eyes and seen into his soul whilst calmly describing his faults and inner demons, a truly cathartic experience. However, says Sharp, his life is largely too banal for material and he largely draws upon snapshots of history to furnish him with the ideas for lyrics. Stand out track Thief is taken from various stories of highwaymen that had been made famous by broadsheet ballads and plays - the likes of Charles Peace, William Nevison, Jonathan Wild and Jack Sheppard. He delivers this story in first person, almost as if he is playing the part of a complete degenerate with little or no conscience or morals. As Sharp says, It's like a form of tourism. You can visit but not live in the mind of an appalling human being.Empty Vessels

UNIM-VER-3638xAmong The Oak And Ash
Among The Oak And AshTwo veteran singer/songwriters Josh Joplin and Garrison Starr have teamed up here for a very unique and interesting project. Among the Oak & Ash (the name is borrowed from the title of an old folk song) faithfully render traditional ballads and folk tunes but with a contemporary American sound. Their energy and blend of electric and acoustic instrumentation is reminiscent of bands like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. With the exception of 2 originals (Joseph Hillstrom and High, Low & Wide) the source material on this debut album consists of tunes whose derivations range from the 1600s through the early 20th Century. Produced by Brian Harrison and Among the Oak & Ash and pressed on 180g Vinyl.
A lot of people think of folk music as something thats sweet and gentle, but so many of these songs are raunchy and brutal. They cover everything from God to the devil, from unrequited love to murder. Josh Joplin

Gypsum StringsTheir second release springs from 1960's West coast legends like The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros., The Charlatans, and Moby Grape, adding elements of X, Neu, The Feelies, Mercury Rev, and Fairport Convention. Cutting through the dense arrangements are powerhouse harmonies. Rachel Cox emerges as the Blue Ridge amalgam of Sandy Denny and Linda Ronstadt while Pat Sullivan's gravelly baritone anchors it all in Johnny Cash and John Doe territory. The sextet's trademark killer songwriting chops are in evidence as Gypsum Strings boasts some beautiful ballads that temper the heaviness of other tracks. Though commercially speaking the British folk band Trees weren't a great success in the short three years before the group disbanded in 1972, over the years they have received more recognition.
They are not just another folk-group from the flower power age copying Fairport Convention; they add a sharp psychedelic edge to their compositions & arrangements. Celia Humphris' voice rings smooth and clear over chugging beats.

The SunBefore Four Tet was remixing Radiohead and Coldplay and before Adem was performing with David Byrne and Fairport Convention, they were breaking new ground as Fridge, a trio formed in 1996 with fellow schoolmate Sam Jeffers. After three critically acclaimed albums, they're back with The Sun, their most celebrated album yet. It's a dense, aggressive record that casually blends post-punk, left-field funk, free jazz, folk, noise, and Krautrock into one sound that, despite the years and each individual's development, is unmistakably trademark Fridge.1.Sun, The

In Search Of Amelia EarhartImport
Originally released in 1972 for Elektra, In Search Of Amelia Earhart was a critically-acclaimed concept album inspired by Amelia Earhart's mysterious disappearance in 1939. For this album, Ian Matthews, who had released a flurry of excellent albums since leaving Fairport Convention, once again proves his talent as a song smith with songs like True Story of Amelia Earhart's Last Night and Even The Guiding Light.
He also continues his research into the folk song, sharing his favorites with fans through a handful of outstanding covers, including Dave McEnry's Amelia Earhart's Last Flight and Paul Siebel's Louise. Matthews also, as always, has a talent for surrounding himself with excellent musicians, this time employing the help of Andy Roberts, Dave Richards and Bob Ronga. 180g gatefold issue with lyrics.1. Blood SpeaksSmoke Fairies' second proper album, Blood Speaks, finally finds its domestic release here in the United States. Head, the venerated producer, returns for the new album, and their live band was also drafted in adding their intuitive version of the duo's evolving sound. Praised by everyone from Jack White to new wave pioneer Gary Numan, the Fairies have been gaining stateside attention for their early singles and EPs, and their debut Through Low Light And Trees in 2011.
The duo of Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire have been on an epic journey, both physically and spiritually, touring Britain, Europe and America; in tour buses, ramshackle vans, and driving themselves 3000 miles across the US, all the while drawing increasingly devoted audiences with their exquisitely original and mesmerizing music. All these experiences bleed from every pore of Blood Speaks, undeniable proof of a tougher and more fearless Smoke Fairies.
"We've got more confident in what we're doing, and so we've pushed things more," says Katherine. "We've gotten bolder with the dynamics, and our influences have broadened."
"Blamire and Davies' dueling guitars, once nimble and clean, now shrouded in a mist, muggy and ancient, like some unholy union of Fairport convention and colour Haze" - Pitchfork

Ode To A Rainy Day
All Unreleased Material Spanning Robert Lester Folsom's Early Years
Previously Unreleased Photos And Art
Liner Notes Written By Robert Lester Folsom
Anthology Recordings is pleased to present Ode To A
Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975, a collection of previously
unreleased home recordings from Robert Lester Folsom.
The 13 tracks in this collection capture the halcyon,
wide-eyed experiments of Folsom who, after going
halves in a reel-to-reel tape recorder with a friend,
recorded all of this material over college summer breaks
in barns, screened porches and bedrooms across Adel,
Georgia. Folsom crafts a delicate form of folk-rock, with
a knack for penning gorgeous ballads (See You Later
I'm Gone, Can't See You), spellbinding instrumental
explorations (Oblivion) and elements of dusty
psychedelia (the farfisa-peppered Written In Your Hair
and On And On). There are echoes of Neil Young
(Southern Man was a favorite cover of Folsom's), Nick
Drake and early Fairport Convention in Folsom's form
and lyricism, that would later become more realized on
his full-length Music And Dreams (1976). Perhaps just as
precious as the songs revived in this collection is the
youthful sense of excitement and experimentation that
has been captured and preserved.1. Ode to a Rainy Day

The Man UpstairsThe Man Upstairs sees psychedelic troubadour Robyn Hitchcock uniting with legendary producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, R.E.M.) for one of the most unique outings of his already quite distinctive career. The album - which arrives just one short year after 2013's acclaimed Love From London - sees the British singer/songwriter musing on mortality, masculinity, and the impossibility of forever via an unexpected intermingling of self-penned originals and "songs I wished I'd written." Modern standards like The Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and The Psychedelic Furs' "The Ghost In You" are reimagined as stark and melancholy folk ballads, and then set to powerful effect alongside haunting new songs like the plaintive "Recalling The Truth." Hitchcock's 20th solo studio recording - give or take a few outtake, demo, and rarities compilations - The Man Upstairs is a remarkable portrait of an artist raging quietly against the dying of the proverbial light. "Yet another autumnal record," says Robyn. "Yet another elegiac record. It's reminiscent of I Often Dream Of Trains-there's a lot of autumn on that record as well.1. The Ghost In You

Two Sides To Every StoryTwo Sides To Every Story, the criminally long out-of-print solo album from founding Byrds member, Gene Clark, finally returns to vinyl. 35 years after its initial 1977 release on RSO, High Moon Records re-mastered, 180-gram audiophile vinyl LP is presented in stunningly rich and crisp audio fidelity that will shed new light on this underrated, beautifully-crafted Gene Clark classic. The album was produced by Thomas Jefferson Kaye, producer of Clark's masterpiece, No Other, and features an all-star cast of musical co-conspirators: singer Emmylou Harris, banjo-virtuoso Douglas Dillard (The Byrds, Dillard & Clark), Country violin legend Byron Berline, guitarist Jeff Skunk Baxter (Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell), and pedal-steel ace Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones). Gene Clark served as The Byrds chief songwriter in the mid-sixties, penning some of their most essential songs, including Feel a Whole Lot Better, Eight Miles High and You Showed Me.
Clark's inimitable songwriting and singing continue to inspire and influenced countless artists. Among them: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (who recorded TWO of his compositions on their 2010 Grammy® winning Album Of The Year, Raising Sand ), Bob Dylan, Fairport Convention, REM, Tom Petty, Yo La Tengo, the Flamin' Groovies, Teenage Fanclub, and Wilco.1. You're A Very Lovely WomanAmong folk-rock devotees and power-pop cultists, Emitt Rhodes is a legendary figure with a powerful mystique. The prodigiously talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist first came to prominence as the teenaged leader of The Merry-Go-Round, a unique L.A. baroque folk-rock quartet whose lone 1967 album is now regarded as being in the same class as the debut discs of such 60s contemporaries as the Byrds, Love, the Left Banke and the Buffalo Springfield.
The Merry-Go-Roundwhich also included guitarist Gary Kato, ex-Leaves bassist Bill Rinehart and former Grass Roots drummer Joel Larsonscored an early hit with the infectiously jangly Live. The song (which would be covered in the 80s by the Bangles) became a major regional hit in the Los Angeles area. Lives equally distinctive B-side, Time Will Show the Wiser, was covered the following year by Fairport Convention. The bands second single, the bittersweet, orchestrated Youre a Very Lovely Woman, was an equally impressive achievement.
Those three songs are all featured on Youre a Very Lovely Woman, which offers a consistently intoxicating mix of Beatlesque vocal harmonies, ringing folk-rock guitars, sparkling songcraft and playful baroque and psychedelic touches.
Although The Merry-Go-Round would disband two years after releasing their only LP, the album has gained steadily in notoriety and prestige over the years. Original copies of the album have become rare collectors items, regularly changing hands for exorbitant prices among fans.
Now, Youre a Very Lovely Woman is once again available on vinyl to thrill longtime admirers and new fans alike. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl, the album includes complete, meticulously reproduced original cover art.1. Live
