American Slang (Awaiting Repress)American Slangs marks an extraordinary leap forward for the Gaslight Anthem, revealing a triumphant rock 'n' roll band honed by two years of nearly non-stop touring. On September 14, 2011, The Horrible Crowes took the stage of the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA for an amazing hour-long plus set. It was only the band's second show, and attendees were able to experience Elsie in an authentic, natural setting.
I think this was one of the highlights of my career, Brian Fallon recalls. Everyone was in great spirits, we were comfortable, and we were playing music that excited us beyond what we thought we were capable of. I remember, on this night, I felt like someone else was playing for us. I love this band, as a fan.
Both Fallon and guitarist Ian Perkins remember that night fondly. I will always look back at this show with the fondest of memories. Sometimes you can walk into a venue and the atmosphere is already there, The Troubadour is one of those places. We were all excited to play such a legendary venue and you only have to read the names on the walls inside to see why."

The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.
Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.
And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.
After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.
We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.
Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.
The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?
It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.
And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.1. 45

EclipseEclipse, Lewis' third album as Twin Shadow, follows up on the success of 2012's Confess, an international critical smash.
That moment when something pure and constant is broken, where you're filled with vulnerability, that moment is what I live for in art, says George Lewis, Jr., aka Twin Shadow. I've always chased that in my music, and when I find it I try to reign it back right before it falls over the edge.
2012's international critical smash, Confess, was hailed by Pitchfork as Best New Music for its brash lyrics [and] laser-focused songwriting, Uncut called an impeccable sequel to an immaculate debut, and NME dubbed a thrill ride. Stunning performances everywhere from Fallon and Conan to Coachella and Bonnaroo cemented Lewis' status as one of the most charismatic and compelling frontmen in music today, but by the end of touring for Confess, he found himself burned out and in need of solitude.1. Crazy RhythmsBar/None is proud to release two classic albums by the Feelies, the much-loved group of hyperactive indie rockers from Haledon, New Jersey who did much to influence the sound of college radio in the 1980s.
Their debut album Crazy Rhythms is a masterwork of perfectly honed minimalist rock 'n' roll that leaps and darts into the corners of the listener's consciousness, a true sonic achievement that Rolling Stone called one of the 100 Best albums of the 1980s. Fans of the Velvet Underground, Wire and Brian Eno's early solo albums will surely appreciate their forces at work.

"I'm starting to think that the only way Black Clouds would fail us is if they
simply decided not to show up." -Brightest Young Things
The final minutes of Black Clouds' debut album did not have a happy
ending: In a spoken word coda, Clutch's Neil Fallon repeatedly informs the
listener that "everything is not going to be OK," and despite the fact this
had already been well communicated by the album itself, this was the first
time that language had been used to articulate its quasi-nihilism. For these
Washington D.C. post-rock and metal experimentalists, it was a rare, but
vivid show-me-and-tell-me moment.
Which is to say that Dreamcation, Black Clouds' sophomore effort and Collect
Records debut, is a significantly different kind of record. That sense of doom,
once mined for its power, is more effectively harnessed for a nuanced energy-
the darkness curbed just enough to let the light in-and the result is alternately
aggressive and ambient, often in the same song, and sometimes in the same
part: "Carcosa," for one, takes equal cues from funeral and ascension, and
"Some Of Us Are Meant To Disappear" somehow pummels you into a warm
hug. A smart and measured progression, Black Clouds finds itself at their most
introspective on Dreamcation, and if this album's finalÉ eschews language
altogether for a wash of subtle chords and a blissfully ecstatic drone, it's only
because-perhaps-everything is going to be OK after all.1. We Begged For The Floods

Wise Up GhostLong-rumored and shrouded in mystery, this collaborative album between Elvis Costello and The Roots promises to be one of the most unexpected and
revelatory releases of 2013. Born out of multiple performances by Costello on the Roots' day/night job at Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, this album developed organically and is definitely a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the amazing parts. It surprises with how good the two
elements gel, but also sounds exactly how you'd think in your wildest dreams. As The Roots' ?uestlove notes, "it's a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. I went stark and dark on the music. Elvis went HAM on some ole Ezra Pound shit"

Soul EyesSinger, songwriter and pianist Kandace Springs will release her debut full-length album Soul Eyes on Blue Note Records. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein (Lizz Wright, Melody Gardot, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock), the album touches upon soul and pop while channeling her jazz influences as well as her Nashville upbringing. Kandace counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes, but as evidenced by Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them.
Kandace's journey to discovering her uniqueness didn't happen overnight. In fact, her 2014 self-titled debut EP had a decidedly contemporary R&B/hip-hop bent with production by Pop & Oak (Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Miguel). The EP was incredibly well-received and led to performances on Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as appearances at the Afropunk and Bonnaroo festivals.
Kandace was dubbed a "suave songstress" (Wall Street Journal), "a versatile and vital artist" (Afropunk), and "a vocal force to be reckoned with" (Okayplayer). Essence Magazine named her a New & Next artist and Interview Magazine made her their Music Discovery, writing that while "Hearing the word jazz might revert a listener's thoughts to the music of yesteryear...Up-and-comer Kandace Springs aims to change this notion. The singer, songwriter, and pianist blends elements of soul, jazz, and pop, producing a unique and modern twist on the genre that appeals to young and old listeners alike."
As amazing an experience as that was, as Kandace got ready to record her album she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't yet singing her true self. Conversations with her longtime producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers led to soul searching and rethinking her musical direction. Also during this period, Kandace attracted the attention of Prince, who heard her makeover of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" on the website Okayplayer. The music icon invited her to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain. "He encouraged me a lot before I recorded this new record, especially during the time in which I was trying to figure out my sound," Kandace says. "He told me that I needed to do what comes naturally to me. He was absolutely right."
For Soul Eyes, Kandace continued working closely with Rogers and Sturken, but they also recruited Klein to help the singer bring out her distinctive artistic traits. "Larry wanted me to be free in the studio," she recalls. "I've been through a lot of other sessions in which the producer tries to take control of your sound. Larry was just like, 'Go in and play what you feel.' That ultimately led to the best outcome; he captured this record perfectly."
Klein praises Kandace as a "natural." "In this era, in which flash and hunger for fame is often equated with talent, she's that rare person who sings and plays because that is what she needs to do in life," he says. "When I first heard Kandace, I was sold after hearing one song. Her smoky voice coupled with a sense of phrasing way beyond her years, and her angular way of accompanying herself on piano grabbed me right away."
The eleven songs contained on Soul Eyes are a mix of Kandace's originals and co-writes as well as the jazz classic "Soul Eyes" and songs by Jesse Harris, Shelby Lynne, War, and others. The album features Kandace's playing piano alongside an illustrious cast of musicians that includes trumpeter Terence Blanchard, guitarists Dean Parks and Jesse Harris, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, organist Pete Kuzma, bassist Dan Lutz, percussionist Pete Korpela.1. Willie And The Boys: Willie's Stash Vol. 2Legacy Recordings is set to release Willie Nelson and the Boys, the eagerly-awaited second installment in the acclaimed Willie's Stash archival recordings series.
Following in the musical footsteps of 2014's December Day, the first volume in the Willie's Stash series (featuring Willie's Sister Bobbie), Willie Nelson and the Boys is another family collaboration, this time showcasing Willie and sons, Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson, performing a selection of well-loved American country music standards and classics, including seven penned by the immortal Hank Williams Sr.
The Willie's Stash series will present a variety of archival releases, each personally curated by Willie Nelson, culled from decades of recording and touring, providing unique perspectives on one of America's most vital musical forces.
Consisting mainly of studio recordings laid down during the extraordinary 2011 sessions for Heroes, Willie's Legacy debut, Willie Nelson and the Boys (Willie's Stash, Vol. 2) is produced by Willie's longtime friend and collaborator Grammy-winning Buddy Cannon and recorded by Steve Chadie at Pedernales Recordings Studio in Austin, Texas.
Musicians on the album include Willie Nelson (vocals, Trigger), Lukas Nelson (vocals, electric guitar, resonator guitar), Micah Nelson (vocals), Mickey Raphael (harmonica), Kevin Swine Grantt (bass), Bobby Terry (acoustic guitar, electric guitar), Jim Moose Brown (piano, B-3 organ, Wurlitzer), Mike Johnson (steel guitar), Tony Creasman (drums), Barry Bales (upright bass on My Tears Fall) and Lonnie Wilson (drums on My Tears Fall). Move It On Over featured background vocals by the Spur Of The Moment Singers: Buddy Cannon, Mickey Raphael, Kevin Swine Grantt, Bobby Terry, Jim Moose Brown, Mike Johnson, Tony Creasman, Melonie Cannon, and Shannon Finnegan.
According to Willie, the album is ....kinda like the country version of 'Stardust.' Where you have all these great songs and standards that the young people have never heard, then all of a sudden you have a whole new audience out there.
I really love the live element of this record, said producer Buddy Cannon. There was a fire in the studio during those sessions, especially on these particular tracks. It was as though the band was in a Nashville honky tonk and Willie and Lukas strolled in and jammed with the band for an hour. That's what this record is. It's honest excitement. I've never cut a record before that has this element.... It's a great joy to see Willie, Luke and Micah all equally part of a record that I love so much.
Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Maui, singer/songwriter/guitarist Lukas Nelson entered the music scene as a youngster and, by the age of 13, had joined his father Willie Nelson's band, touring as rhythm guitarist and honing the stagecraft that lead to his own career. Moving to Los Angeles, he launched in own ensemble, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real (POTR) in 2008; POTR served as Neil Young's back-up group on The Monsanto Years album and subsequent tour. Lukas and his father worked together on Willie's 2012 Legacy album, Heroes, which featured a number of father-and-son vocal-and-guitar duets.
Micah Nelson has performed with a variety of artists at events including FarmAid, Neil Young's Bridge-School Benefit, Desert Trip festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Coachella, Bonnaroo Festival as well as on TV shows such as Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and more. Micah has been involved in the ensemble Insects vs. Robots, recorded and toured with Neil Young and made multi-instrumental contributions to the 21st century post-modern American rock band Promise Of The Real. Micah is currently the singer/songwriter/guitarist in his future-folk project Particle Kid.
Willie Nelson and the Boys (Willie's Stash, Vol. 2) is the artist's 10th release since signing to Legacy Recordings in 2012. His last Legacy album, God's Problem Child, was released on April 28, 2017 (the eve of Willie's 84th birthday on April 29) and promptly entered the Billboard Country chart at #1, making it the artist's second US country chart-topper in less than two years; Nelson's 6th Legacy release, Django and Jimmie, an unforgettable musical collaboration with Merle Haggard, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country chart in June 2015.1.
