Iberia, Danzas Fantasticas (Speakers Corner)
As in numerous other works by Spanish composers, Isaac AlbÉniz's aim in his Iberia Suite was to portray the landscape and express the zest for life which is so abundant in southern countries. Infused with folkmusic elements, the suite is introduced by the dancelike Evocación which vividly evokes a picture of Iberia. The lush, extravagant harmonies and the stark contrasts of the dynamics in particular - from the softest pianissimo to the extreme fortissimo - certainly whet one's appetite. Don't worry - Spain has a lot to offer! The next movement, El Corpus en Sevilla transports us to Andalusia where a solemn procession is taking place to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi. This is followed by a sparkling Triana in which the various complex and brilliant rhythms of the national dances Almería, Rondeña and Fandango are ingeniously combined. And the two movements El puerto and El Albaicín are no less exciting: the first presents a rich potpourri of types of Spanish songs, while the second - held in the minor key - conjures up a picture of Granada's gypsy quarter.
Turina's Danzas fantásticas are noted for their sumptuous orchestration and marked rhythms. A better choice to round off this first-class recording, dedicated to Spanish tradition, is almost impossible to imagine.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Evocación (Iberia)

Queen Of The Flat Top GuitarThis is a collection of impossibly rare recordings from legendary finger-picker Lena Hughes. A musical amateur that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri, in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tunings that were necessary to play them.
Lena Hughes' repertoire can be devided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband, Jake. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as Pearly Dew, Spanish Fandango and Kentucky Moon Waltz depend heavily upon resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes' playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire are what define her legendary status.1. Pearly Dew

North by Northwest SoundtrackThis timeless 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller set a new benchmark for the format across the following decades as the precursor to James Bond and the wide-screen world of larger than life action adventure. Starring Cary Grant, it's the story of a man in peril being pursued across America from New York to Mount Rushmore.
Bernard Herrmann's score for the film is overwhelmingly an orchestral tour-de-force and this release presents the fullest of stereo mixes of the original recordings under the baton of the composer himself. It allows the listener to appreciate the incredible line-up of MGM contracted musicians whose flair across the entire range of orchestral instruments delivers one of the most breath-taking soundtracks ever recorded. Herrmann described it as, "a kaleidoscopic orchestral fandango designed to kick-off the exciting rout which follows. Premiered in Chicago on July 1st 1959, this release puts you dead centre in the best seats in the house to recapture the debut of that musical moment from 57 years ago.LP 1

Give Up Your DreamsColored Vinyl
New Zealand''s The Phoenix Foundation are all set to return with their new and sixth studio album Give Up Your Dreams. It's a shrewd and vibrant reminder that in The Phoenix Foundation's gloriously absurd world of Technicolour pop, it's the challenges you set yourself that reap the greatest rewards. "Give Up Your Dreams could sound like a defeat but it represents something quite defiant, joyous and celebratory" exclaims co-frontman Samuel Scott of the record's infectious rhythmic driven sound and optimistic feel. Channelling previous album Fandango's beauteous side, but this time fuelled by a spit ball of irrepressible energy, Give Up Your Dreams feels like the band's most contemporary offering yet. With the new addition of drummer Chris O'Connor, the album was written taking its lead from the rhythm section for the very first time; paving the way for an all new creative process. "I was convinced we had to have a different sounding record," explains Scott's counterpart singer/guitarist Lukasz Buda. "So we completely removed any trace of acoustic guitar. It was important to leave room for the band to take it somewhere else and make way for a new vitality." Thematically and lyrically the group typically took inspiration from various of sources. The dazzling title-track is a frank deglamourisation of life on the road spurred on by a conversation with dear friend, collaborator, and fellow New Zealander Lawrence Arabia. The energetic 'Mountain' is the ultimate counterpoint; an afro-kraut groove with layers of Television-inspired guitars and dreamscapes about the 'money men' controlling the world. 'Playing Dead' nearly didn't make it further than the cutting room floor but was revived thanks to the photographs in a 1950s Time Life essay on the Ona people of Tierra Del Fuego in southern Chile and their ghost rituals. Elsewhere in 'Jason' Luke sings about both the mother of his children and his 'band wife' (Samuel Scott) being struck down with sciatica and being reliant on string painkillers to function, touching on the fear of ageing in the process. Album closer 'Myth' was inspired by the writings of St. Isidore of Seville who in the 19th Century attempted to compile all human knowledge.1. mountain

La FuturaLa Futura, the first new studio album from ZZ Top in nine years, is set for release on American Recordings. The album harkens back to the hallmark raw sound of the band's formative years and will, inevitably, be considered a return to form on multiple levels. Produced by Rick Rubin and Billy Gibbons, the album finds the legendary group infusing their newly recorded work with the electric blues/roots approach that typified ZZ Top's earliest work while, at the same time, reaching for new sonic horizons. At its fundament, this is the incarnation of the band whose influence resonates today with such artists as The Black Keys, Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age and many others.
The fact that the new album's title is in Spanish is a nod to an early ZZ Top tradition manifested in the titles of some of the band's earliest albums including Tres Hombres, Fandango!, El Loco and DegÜello. Known for decades by the sobriquet "That Little Ol' Band From Texas," ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Keith Richards in 2004 and has maintained a very active international and domestic touring schedule over the intervening years. They signed to American Recordings a few years ago and have been working on what would become La Futura in spurts since then.1. I Gotsta Get Paid
