St. Carolyn By The Sea / Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'Dessner: St. Carolyn By The Sea; Greenwood: Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'
Never before have classical and rock converged in such an organic, compelling and sensual way as they do in the three short orchestral works written by and featuring The National guitarist Bryce Dessner on his new release St. Carolyn by the Sea, performed with the Copenhagen Phil and conducted by Andree de Ridder.
Dessner presents three pieces of modern classical music, written from the perspective of a rock musician who is keenly aware of the raw emotional impact music any music can have on an audience. He draws on elements from Baroque and folk music, late Romanticism and modernism, minimalist music and the blues, among others, as well as referencing the work of such legendary figures as John Fahey, La Monte Young, Bela Bartook, Glenn Branca, Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Despite this broad spectrum of influences, his voice remains individual and distinct.
With this album, which also showcases a suite drawn from Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwoods soundtrack for There Will Be Blood, Bryce Dessner and Jonny Greenwood open up a new frontier for symphonic music.BRYCE DESSNER

Yes It's TrueYes, It's True is the first proper studio album by The Polyphonic Spree since 2007s The Fragile Army.
"The songs here are from many different periods in the last few years," frontman Tim DeLaughter explains. "This record feels like a collection of "songs" rather than a long listening piece which we've done previously in the Spree stylistically. It's kind of refreshing."

HamartiaFormed in 1989, this release marks the band's 28th anniversary year and is a sonic testament to their legacy as one of the earliest U.S. dark & doom metal bands still active today.
Considered by the band to be their best work to date, Harmartia's mastery is due in part to the synergy of its lineup, who constituted their previous album Bled White: Paul Kuhr (founder/vocalist), Larry Roberts (guitars), Vito Marchese (guitars), Mike Feldman (bass), and Garry Naples (drums).
Recorded at Belle City Sound in Racine, WI, this album sees production from long-time Novembers Doom producer Chris Djuricic (Jungle Rot, Malevolence), and Mix Master metal legend Dan Swano (Opeth, Dissection, Katatonia).1. Devils Light

Newly Discovered Live & Studio Recordings From 1949-1958
In the Beginning features recordings of Wes Montgomery spanning the years from 1949 to 1958, the formative years when the six-string virtuoso was honing his craft in Southern Indiana. Since Wes Montgomery's passing in 1968, only two other albums of predominantly unreleased material have been released Willow Weep For Me (Verve 1968) and Echoes of Indiana Avenue (Resonance 2012). Resonance Records is pleased to introduce the third such archival offering with In the Beginning.
The project began life in the wake of Echoes of Indiana Avenue. Even before that release, Buddy Montgomery's widow Ann approached Feldman and Resonance founder George Klabin with the Turf Club, Missile Lounge, and jam session recordings, looking for a respectful home for this never-released music. Philip Kahl, a 22 year old Butler College student had access to the brothers and recorded them at the before mentioned places with a portable tape recorder. 'In the Beginning started out early as a project exclusively focusing on the recordings received from Ann & Buddy Montgomery and evolved into an early years collection. There hasn't been a release like this in Wes's discography until now', says producer Zev Feldman.
The 26-track collection will be available as 2-CD and 3-LP sets. These newly discovered live & studio recordings from 1949-1958, include a complete never-before-released 1955 Epic Records session produced by Quincy Jones, licensed from Sony Music Entertainment, newly discovered 78 RPM sides with Wes as a sideman recorded for Spire Records (1949), a live recording from the home of Ervena Montgomery, Indianapolis (1956), live recordings from the Turf Club (1956), the Missile Lounge (1958) in Indianapolis, and the C&C Music Lounge in Chicago (1957).
This is presented on 180-gram vinyl mastered by engineering legend, Bernie Grundman, & pressed on 12inch LPs at 33 1/3 RPM by Record Technology Incorporated (R.T.I.) in a hand-numbered slipcase with an 8-panel booklet, and collector postcards of unpublished photos. In the Beginning features extensive liner notes, and meticulously designed artwork that have become the label's trademarks. The release is attractively designed by Burton Yount. This release is made possible with the help of Robert Montgomery, Wes's youngest son, and the head of the Wes Montgomery Estate who signed on as associate producer for the project. Feldman says, 'This is another chapter of previously undiscovered Wes, one which aficionados couldn't have even hoped existed a few short years ago. Resonance is proud to present another chapter in the legacy of Wes Montgomery.'LP1

Resonance Records, in partnership with the National Audiovisual Institute (INA) of France, is pleased to announce the release of Larry Young In Paris/The ORTF Recordings. Presenting groundbreaking performances by jazz organist and pianist, Larry Young, these studio and live recordings from 1964 and 1965 made for French Radio and never before issued on record will be released in a limited edition 2-LP set.
Producer Zev Feldman notes, It's particularly exciting because none of this music has ever been heard before except on its initial broadcast in France five decades ago. I think that's something to celebrate and a call for us all - as we often do with the archival recordings we at Resonance Records uncover - to revisit and discuss this legendary artist's legacy.
Musicians featured on these recordings include trumpet legend Woody Shaw, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Nathan Davis and drummer Billy Brooks. An international cast of supporting players: French pianist Jack DiÉval tenor saxophonist Jean-Claude Fohrenbach and bassist Jacques B. Hess; Italian drummer Franco Manzecchi, Jamaican trumpet player Sonny Grey and Guadaloupean percussionist Jacky Bamboo round out the personnel. This album marks the first new release of Larry Young music in thirty-eight years.
This project came about in 2012 when Resonance Records producer Zev Feldman traveled to France to explore the ORTF (Office of French Radio and Television) archives (the media vaults overseen by the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) in the hope of finding undiscovered treasures, which he suspected he might find there. Feldman asked INA executives about specific artists and was stunned to learn that the vaults contained recordings documenting some of the greatest American jazz musicians who lived in - or visited - Paris in the 1960's, including Larry Young. Resonance Records presents in this album tapes that had been sitting idly in the vaults for nearly 50 years, scrupulously maintained by INA. Resonance will also be releasing other future projects from the INA vaults. More details to come soon. Producer Feldman states, It's been a thrill of the lifetime working with Christiane Lemire, Laure Audinot and Pascal Rozat at INA France to find this great music and shepherd this release. No question about it, this project represents jazz through diplomacy and the greater good of a mission. These recordings showcase American artists who found their home and voice in Europe at a time when the American landscape wasn't always as supportive. Feldman continues, When we started to explore the vaults of ORTF and search for recordings to release, we had a wish list of various artists we were on the hunt for, but Larry was the one artist whom I personally felt we needed to look extra hard for. I couldn't be more thrilled with what we found and which we are now releasing. I hope we'll all revisit this genius's legacy and appreciate why he mattered so much.
While in France, Larry Young recorded at the ORTF Studios in Paris (now Maison de Radio France) as a sideman with the Nathan Davis Quartet, the Jazz aux Champs-ÉlysÉes All-Stars and with his own piano trio which included bassist Jacques B. Hess drummer and Franco Manzecchi. Larry Young In Paris/The ORTF Recordings includes selections from the original tapes, which were recorded specifically to be broadcast on French Radio. As noted, the only time these recordings have been shared with the public were on their original broadcasts on two iconic monthly French radio programs: Musique aux Champs-ÉlysÉes, hosted by French musician and producer Jack DiÉval; and Jazz sur scène, hosted by producer and jazz scholar AndrÉ Francis. Shortly after these recordings were made, Larry Young returned to New York to record the classic album Unity, his second album for Blue Note.
Larry Young died at the tragically young age of 38 in 1978. Larry Young In Paris: The ORTF Recordings is a tribute to his memory and endorsed by the estate of Larry Young. Distraction"The newest hardest-working band in New York might just be one of the best"
...a pitch-perfect pairing of post-punk and indie rock.
Brooklyn-based four piece Bear Hands announce the release of their anticipated sophomore album
Distraction on Cantora Records. "Giants," the simultaneously whiplash-inducing and silkily-grooving debut single off Distraction, was released at the tail end of last year and quickly embraced at radio across the country with spins from tastemakers such as SiriusXM's AltNation, KKDO, KRBZ, KROX, WWCD, WBRU, WBUZ, WXXJ and WHFS. "Giants" is available now digitally in the US and Canada on iTunes and Amazon, and can be posted via their official lyric video HERE, as well as on SoundCloud HERE.
This winter, Bear Hands will join forces with fellow Brooklynites Miniature Tigers for a co-headlining tour, with support from Total Slacker. The jaunt begins on February 27th at Rough Trade in Brooklyn and wraps up on March 20th at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Additionally, the band will play South By Southwest in Austin in support of Distraction, with specific showcases to be announced soon. Full tour dates are below.
With Distraction, Bear Hands have shrugged off the notion of second album jitters to create an expansive sound that grew over three long years and thousands of miles on the road. Produced by guitarist Ted Feldman and mixed by James Brown (Nine Inch Nails, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters), Distraction is a violently self-assured record which sees the quartet of Dylan Rau, TJ Orscher, Val Loper and Feldman distilling their anxieties and pleasures alike into perfectly twisted pop nuggets.
After releasing their debut LP Burning Bush Supper Club, Bear Hands criss-crossed America opening for the legendary GZA, Passion Pit, and AWOLNATION only to return home to Brooklyn and be distracted by the minutia of modern life and shallow urbanity. While avoiding each other for months, the band frittered away its time with help from the internet, serial monogamy, and recreational drugs.
Fortunately, this distance allowed the band to approach Distraction with a revolutionary new perspective. Their minds expanding and hearts imploding, Bear Hands set about matching new songs to familiar soundscapes. From the propulsive, infectious rhythms of "Giants" and the angular, warped melodies of "Bone Digger" to the widescreen sweep of "Thought Wrong," Distraction demands your attention - calling out for love from behind a mask of ones and zeroes, cardboard and vinyl.

No Matter WhatTo deny reality is to create conict, he always tells us. No one knows how it happened, or when - but here in the last
known metropolis on Earth, where all public memory has been erased, Evan Ønly is on a mission to recover the promise
of our future. He works among other maverick scientists, artists, and revolutionaries in shadow, intent on piecing
together our shattered history. It was mass denial that led us to the state we're in, Ønly is on a mission to prevent us
from making the same mistake.
His material draws inspiration from the classic "future vintage" synth pop he discovered through his archival
explorations. His work is evocative of British pioneers Pet Shop Boys, La Roux, and David Bowie's "Let's Dance". The
debut Evan Ønly EP, No Matter What, is a highly-evolved synth rock record. Produced by Ice Choir's Kurt Feldman at
the pristine Winter Station, these rst six songs are personal anthems turned psychological pop. Ønly creates music in
the belief that pop can still change the way we see ourselves and the world - the one we've inherited and the ones we'll

X-CommunicateSometimes you have to rip it up and start again. It was a tough
call for Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls was her guise for most of a
decade, an outlet through which she's crafted a resonant,
instantly-identifiable body of work. Over the course of three
albums, four EPs, and an array of singles, Dum Dum Girls
morphed from the girl-group-gone-bad moves of their 2010
debut, I Will Be, to the plush noir-pop of 2014's Too True, a dark
heart burning bright. But as her music evolved, she found that for
many she would be forever refracted through the prism of Dum
Dum Girls' early work: retro-leaning female harmonies, a
backdrop of lo-fi, fuzzed up guitars.
In 2015, she decided to shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee for her
real name, Kristin, and adding Kontrol. It was a spontaneous idea
that resonated. The challenge was to start fresh, go further back
into her relationship to music. Sweep all her loves together into
one genreless experience. "The first music I felt was mine was
classic 80s pop and 90s R&B, from Tiffany, Janet Jackson and
Madonna to TLC, SWV, and Aaliyah," she says. "But for years I
was hellbent on the rock'n'roll thing, revering Joan Jett, Patti
Smith, Chrissie Hynde, -- a rebellion against her classical vocal
training -- but I was like, fuck it, I'm just going to try it all. I'm
going to pretend I'm Kate Bush covering Mariah.
Refocused and inspired, Kristin wrote 62 songs, whittled the list
to ten for X-Communicate, and finished the album with the help
of new producers Kurt Feldman (who had produced her Christmas
single a few years back) and Andrew Miller (who played
guitar on the first Dum Dum Girls album and had joined the band
in its last incarnation).
Arguably the biggest shift, beyond the music itself, is that as
Kristin Kontrol she tells her stories using a sonic palette splashed
with bold pop melodies, her vocals showcasing a range hitherto
unexplored on record. The songs that emerge from Kristin's
universe -- a menagerie of new wave and R&B, European synth
pop, and experimental disco -- are both familiar and unique,
using genre rather than adhering to it, with a distinct nod to the
present. It may be a leap into the unknown, but "little risk means
little reward," as Karen O once counseled her. I feel free. I kind
of excommunicated myself. Even if I have to rebuild my whole
career, I'd rather work hard than feel stagnant. I feel excited
again, and that's priceless.1. Show Me

Echoes of Indiana AvenueWith a lot of sleuthing and a team of experts on the case, long lost tapes of Wes Montgomery have been discovered and restored. Resonance Records will release Echoes of Indiana Avenue, the first full album of previously unheard Montgomery music in over 25 years on March 6, 2012, which would have been Montgomery's 88th birthday. Over a year and a half in the making, the release will provide a rare, revealing glimpse of a bona fide guitar legend. The tapes are the earliest known recordings of Montgomery as a leader, pre-dating his auspicious 1959 debut on Riverside Records. The album showcases Montgomery in performance from 1957-1958 at nightclubs in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as rare studio recordings. The release is also beautifully packaged, containing previously unseen photographs and insightful essays by noted music writers and musicians alike, including guitarist Pat Martino and Montgomery's brothers Buddy and Monk.
On this scintillating discovery, Montgomery plays it strictly straight ahead, swinging with a momentum and ferocity that is positively visceral, a clear display of Montgomery's bebop side. Listening to these recordings only reaffirms how Montgomery exerted such a profound influence over generations of guitarists from George Benson, Pat Martino and Joe Pass to John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Kevin Eubanks, and Russell Malone to Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Joined by such Naptown colleagues as drummer Paul Parker and keyboardist Melvin Rhyne (who would later appear on Montgomery's first Riverside release), pianist Earl Van Riper, bassist Mingo Jones and drummer Sonny Johnson, as well as brothers Monk on acoustic bass and Buddy on piano (the brothers featured on one track), Montgomery swings with blistering abandon on a program of burners and ballads. Included here are renditions of Shorty Rogers' Diablo's Dance, Erroll Garner's Misty and Billy Strayhorn's Take The A Train as well as jazz standards Darn That Dream and Body and Soul. Montgomery also reveals some bluesy roots with an earthy improvised After Hours Blues, which has him playing with Guitar Slim-like nastiness. Elsewhere on Echoes of Indiana Avenue there's a stirring duet between Wes and organist Rhyne on a moody rendition of Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight and a faithful rendition of Horace Silver's Latin-tinged Nica's Dream. Montgomery and his brothers also tackle Thelonious Monk's Straight, No Chaser with bop-ish authority.
Echoes of Indiana Avenue consists of three different sessions, one studio and two live. Four of the tracks were recorded at The Hub Bub, a long-forgotten jazz club in Indianapolis. The title of the collection refers to a longstanding popular commercial strip in Indianapolis, with historical roots. As Dr. Baker remarks, In Indianapolis during the 1940s and 1950s twenty or more clubs and other performance venues were operating at any given time. Generally speaking, the important clubs lay on or near main thoroughfares in predominantly black areas. The busiest and most notable area was known as 'The Avenue,' which was the portion of Indiana Avenue.
How these long lost tapes from the early stage of Montgomery's solo career finally emerged after being on the shelf for more than 50 years is a tale of intrigue that will enthrall collectors and aficionados. Although the identity of the person who made the original recordings remains unknown, the tapes may have passed through several hands before they were eventually acquired in 1990 by a guitarist and Montgomery fan Jim Greeninger. Due to their fragile condition, he immediately made digital transfers of the original tapes and set out to make a deal with a record company. It wasn't until 2008 that Greeninger, who had tried selling the tapes on eBay, contacted Michael Cuscuna, the respected veteran producer who has had a long track record with Blue Note Records and is also the co-founder of Mosaic Records.
In the summer of 2010, Cuscuna contacted Zev Feldman of Resonance Records, who served as a producer on the project. We had no idea when we got the tapes what they were exactly, Feldman recalls. All we knew was that Wes was on them. So between 2010 and 2011, I made three trips to Indianapolis where I interviewed and discussed the recordings with scholars, musicians and friends of Wes. It was a big mystery and we had to act like gumshoes in piecing it all together. It was actually in part because of label founder and president George Klabin's support that we were able to make this project possible.

Harold Budd: RemixesEmerging from the 60s US avant-garde and originally influenced by the likes of John Cage and Morton Feldman, Harold Budd rebelled against the heavily conceptual works of his peers to explore his own artistic path of existential prettiness. His early work caught the ear of Brian Eno, who invited him to England to record his first commercially released work The Pavilion Of Dreams (Obscure - 1978). This working relationship continued over the next decade, producing landmark works such as The Plateaux Of Mirror (EG - 1980) and The Pearl (EG - 1984). He went on to collaborate with other like-minded souls including the Cocteau Twins, John Foxx and Jah Wobble, and release an impressive stream of delicately constructed solo works, many of which have been issued on All Saints.1. Farmer's CornerFollowing the critically acclaimed Blood Oaths of the New Blues, James Jackson Toth a.k.a Wooden Wand decided to try something different: instead of spending a week in a studio with the same people, the same engineer, the same equipment and the same state of mind, he would record in fits and starts, whenever - and wherever - he felt like it. Over six sessions in four studios spanning three states, he began amassing tracks. Toth then chose his favourites for Farmer's Corner, which is, remarkably, the very first self-produced Wooden Wand album. Aided on the majority of the tracks by bassist Darin Gray (On Fillmore, Jim O'Rourke, Grand Ulena ), and guitarists William Tyler (Lambchop, Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo) and Doc Feldman. The result reflects Toth's omnivorous musical and narrative obsessions. The arrangements - think Little Feat covering Harvest Moon - only serve to highlight his capabilities as both a songwriter and storyteller. The collected songs form an easy entry into the ever-growing Toth output, where outlaws on the run, epic landscapes, endless travels, agitated insomniacs and ditch-digging memory-evaders lurk behind every turn.1. Music From The Hit TV Show
A Score Focused On Percussion And African Sound
Cut in the birth pangs of electric fusion and afro-funk, West Coast drummer Shelly Manne's brilliant score for the popular '60's TV series Daktari still stands as a global fusion landmark.
Daktari is an album by drummer Shelly Manne recorded in 1967 featuring music from Daktari. The heavy use of the marimba with various percussion instruments serves the score well and makes it a huge success.
On the album, Mike Wofford plays a tack piano to evoke an African sound, and Manne is joined by percussionists Emil Richards, Larry Bunker, Frank Carlson, and Victor Feldman. According to the record liner notes, Manne and fellow percussionists play ankle and wrist jingles, Thai mouth organs, angklungs, ocarinas, vibraphones, tympani, and different kinds of marimbas.
Steely Dan guitarist Walter Becker was a fan of the album's 'vaguely African' music, sounding like it came from Hollywood session players rather than actual Africans. In the late 1990s, Becker modelled a percussion sequence after this style on the song Two Against Nature released on the Steely Dan album of the same name.1. Daktari

Imaginary Cities is the recording premiere of saxophonist Chris Potter s new Underground Orchestra. At the core of this larger ensemble is the personnel of his long-established Underground quartet with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith now joined by two bassists, a string quartet, and Potter s old comrade from Dave Holland Quintet days, vibes and marimba man Steve Nelson. The title composition is a suite, panoramic in its reach, with movements subtitled Compassion , Dualities , Disintegration and Rebuilding . The scope of the work, and its contrasting moods and thematic development, inspire some of Potter s finest playing. His saxes fly high above his idealized cityscapes or launch into dialogues or group improvising with its gifted inhabitants. Four further pieces Lament , Firefly , Sky and Shadow Self extend the feeling of the suite, successfully combining both tightly written material and very open areas involving all members of the orchestra. References are multi-idiomatic and multicultural, and Potter, who counts Charlie Parker with Strings amongst his formative enthusiasms, had Arabic and Indian string sections in mind, as well as contemporary composition, when shaping this material. Imaginary Cities was recorded in December 2013 in New York s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. Release of the album is followed by US performances with the Underground Orchestra in New York and San Francisco.1. Lament

PiratesRickie Lee Jones Pirates On Numbered Limited-Edition 180-gram LP From Mobile Fidelity. Singer-Songwriters gorgeous-sounding 1981 album finally remastered!
Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates arrives like a cloudburst in the desert of Eighties formula pop music and recycled heavy-metal rock. So wrote Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone in his five-star review of the eclectic artists sophomore album, a set that continues to defy eras and styles. While less-well known than her 1979 self-titled debut, the ambitious 1981 record remains Jones definitive statementan effort steeped in biographical details, fictional circumstances, and classic literary elements.
Narratively blending West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet while also exploring spirit worlds and her breakup with Tom Waits, Pirates is at its core an idiosyncratic fusion of possibilities. And does Jones deliver! Accompanied by an all-star lineup that includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Steely Dan icon Donald Fagen, drumming colossus Steve Gadd, session pro Victor Feldman, and legendary jazz arranger Ralph Burns, the singer-songwriter achieves a musical nirvana that encompasses post-bop, coffeehouse folk, bohemian pop, romantic soul, Beat poetry, and Broadway showtunes.
Harmonized vocals and jive talking bring the piano-based records rich characters to life, making it seem as if listeners are overhearing conversations between strangers. In more than one way, Pirates is a self-contained theatrical production in which Jones singing is the star attraction. Her moody whispers, cries, and coos are the voices of spurned lovers, alienated outcasts, and unlikely heroines. Albums with this kind of stylistic magnitude, close-up intimacy, and emotional intensity come around only once or so a decade.
Mobile Fidelity is proud to have had the opportunity to remaster Pirates from the original analog master tapes and produce a version that captures every nuance of this great-sounding studio masterpiece. Co-produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker (whose long list of credits include Randy Newman, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton records), trust us when we say that this 180-gram LP is one of the finest-sounding pop records youll hear. Fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Carole King, and Sarah Vaughan should consider this requisite listening. MoFis mini-LP style packaging only adds to the allure.

Hollywood Holidays: The Classic 1991 Radio Broadcast1000 Only Limited Edition
This remarkable release captures The Pixies at their finest, immediately before Christmas 1991, playing a show - broadcast by public radio network KCRW FM - at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
From the outset, this legendary New England four piece are at the very top of their game - opening with the savage rip-snorting blast of Rock Music, before powering into the gloriously riff-driven surf instrumental Cecilia Ann.
Even when pausing for breath, the slower numbers like Gouge Away and Subbacultcha are tough-as-nails and seethe with a barely contained fury. In addition to the usual Francis-Santiago-Deal-Lovering quartet, this performance benefits from the added keyboard wizardry of the mighty Ubus Eric Drew Feldman, who beefs up The Pixies live sound still further.
Eventually, Kim Deals dissatisfaction with Black Francis autocratic leadership style and almost complete domination of the songwriting credits, led to the band splitting apart in early 1993. They took an eleven year career-break - while Francis forged a solo career and Deal went on to achieve further success with The Breeders - and then reconvened in 2004 with the same line-up, albeit - save for a brace of digital singles and a contribution to the Warren Zevon tribute album - only in a live capacity. That much anticipated fifth studio album has yet to materialise.
This December 1991 set is naturally heavily weighted towards the bands then current record, Trompe Le Monde, which had been released just three months earlier in September. All but two of its fifteen songs are represented here - Space (I Believe In) and the title track being the only omissions.
Head On, originally by the Jesus and Mary Chain, is a rare cover version amongst the Black Francis compositions. The only other non-original here is Cecilia Ann, a number cut in the early 1960s by The Surftones. The latter was included on The Pixies 1990 album, Bossanova which also contributes Rock Music and Velouria.
Delving a little further back in time, Gouge Away, Crackity Jones, Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven are all drawn from Doolittle (1989). Thematically linked - and played back-to-back here - are Manta Ray and Dancing the Mantra Ray, both originally only released as single b-sides. Finally, there is Ed Is Dead, the lone representative from The Pixies debut EP, Come on Pilgrim, released in October 1987.LP 1

In 1963, Miles Davis was at a transitional point in his career, without a regular group and wondering what his future musical direction would be. At the time he recorded the music heard on this disc, he was in the process of forming a new band, as can be seen from the personnel: tenor saxophonist George Coleman, Victor Feldman (who turned down the job) and Herbie Hancock on pianos, bassist Ron Carter, and Frank Butler and Tony Williams on drums. Recorded at two separate sessions, this set is highlighted by the classic Seven Steps To Heaven, Joshua and slow passionate versions of Basin Street Blues and Baby Won't You Please Come Home.
