Life. Love. Flesh. BloodImelda May's fifth studio record, entitled Life. Love. Flesh. Blood, is set for release via Verve Records.
It is clear that one of Ireland's biggest exports has found a new groove, here presenting the most personal and intimately autobiographical album she has ever written. The album is produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, who said of Imelda: "When I first happened onto her music, she was a punky Irish Rockabilly singer with a great band. When I ran across her several years later, she had gone through a change of lives and was writing about it with a wild intensity and singing about it in the most open-hearted way."
The album marks a new direction for May who, in the time since her 2014 release Tribal, ended her marriage of eighteen years. Imelda May's new sound sits firmly outside of any sharply defined genre box, widely spanning blues, rock, soul, gospel and jazz. Life, Love, Flesh, Blood breathes new life into a classic sound, with Imelda's powerhouse vocal as distinctive as ever, cementing her position as one of the strongest vocalists of her generation. The singer herself describes the record as her most "honest" yet. Imelda's life changed considerably in the run-up to recording, and this is documented in the only way she knew how. Imelda explains, "It's therapy, like keeping a diary that a lot of people read. Some of my favorite songs don't say much, but they reveal everything."
Recorded over seven days in Los Angeles, the album features musical contributions from guitar hero Jeff Beck ("Black Tears"), piano legend Jools Holland ("When It's My Time") and an accomplished group of backing musicians including the core trio of guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), drummer Jay Bellerose (Elton John & Leon Russell, Ray Lamontagne) and bassist Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets, Mini Mansions), the same band that recorded Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand.
First single "Black Tears" is a personal and heart-wrenching ballad, it features a distinctive slide guitar part, coupled with a unique picking and guitar tone that could be the handiwork of only one man - the legendary Jeff Beck. Jeff Beck says of Imelda, "I knew it from the start you cannot ignore talent this unique."
Imelda showcases her raw yet restrained breathtaking lead vocal, complimented by rich backing vocals and a super tight rhythm section. Written with Angelo Petragalia (Kings of Leon), the inspiration for the song's visual and poignant lyrics was inspired by a very personal moment for Imelda: "I wrote Black Tears with Angelo Petraglia after a heart-wrenchingly difficult goodbye. I closed my door and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror with black tears rolling down my face. It's a sight and situation most women have unfortunately seen ourselves in at some point in life. Angelo had a beautiful guitar piece that fit the mood perfectly."
Imelda May, born and raised in The Liberties area of Dublin, has become one of Ireland's most celebrated female artists in history. Linda Ronstadt was the leading female vocalist in rock 'n' roll when, sensing that it was time to change direction, she starred in the Broadway production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, as well as the accompanying movie.
Pirates of Penzance led the singer to a collaboration with bandleader/arranger Nelson Riddle, who arranged and conducted this 1983 collection of pop standards What's New. It was the first in a trilogy of 1980s albums Ronstadt recorded with Riddle. What's New was a considerable hit, reaching No. 3 on the charts, where it stayed for five consecutive weeks, and selling to date more than three million copies. Ronstadt's next two albums with Riddle followed - Lush Life in 1984) and For Sentimental Reasons in 1986 - also albums of pre-rock standards.

Electronic Music from the Eighties and Nineties presents the soothing, hallucinatory side of Stone's slow-evolving, time-bending composition. While we can't always identify the source, we can hear that his sounds come from somewhere, and that there is a correct or complete version of them in theory; and so we can hear when they are being changed. What drives Stone's music is the flow that he draws out of those differences: the way an Indonesian gamelan morphs into a chorus built from one female vocalist over the course of Mae Yao's twenty-three minutes, the surprise emergence of a Mozart chorus out of the synths and skip-glitches of Sonali, or the slow, ambient evolution of Banteay Srey. Woo Lae Oak, issued in a single side edit for the first time, is an exception. Its samples - a tremolo string and a bottle being blown across the top like a flute - are simple in the extreme. Yet the Stone locates the inherent emotional properties of the sounds and takes them into unexpected expressive territory.

Hagar The Womb is for many, the missing piece of the UK anarcho-punk scene. Formed in 1981, Hagar The Womb was not a typical example of that scene, for they refused to conform to the dress codes and dour seriousness of their peers. What first started as a sextet sporting three female vocalists, soon experienced a healthy bit of turnover. Circulating through at least a dozen band members, Hagar The Womb was often identified by bright colored artwork and outfits, as well as bringing an original and upbeat sound to an otherwise homogenous scene. A week after their inception, they were sharing a bill with The Mob and Zounds. Hagar The Womb would go on to play with the likes of The Apostles, Poison Girls and Rubella Ballet before breaking up in 1985.

For the most part, 1979's Eve is somewhat overlooked as being one of the Alan Parsons Project's finest work, when in fact it involves some of this group's most intricate songs. The album's concept deals with the female's overpowering effect on man. Each song touches on her ability to dissect the male ego, especially through sexual means, originating with Eve's tempting Adam in the beginning of time.
Not only does this idea gain strength as the album progresses, but a musical battle of the sexes begins to arise through each song. The gorgeous "You Won't Be There" spotlights man's insecurity. Sung by Dave Townsend, its melodramatic feel sets a perfect tone. The classically enhanced "Winding Me Up" follows suit, based on a woman's ability to dominate her mate and opening up with sound of a wind-up doll being cranked. Other gems include the bitter but forceful "Damned If I Do" sung by Lenny Zakatek, and the dominating fury of "Lucifer," a powerful instrumental. Even the loutish "You Lie Down with Dogs" bears wit with its gender inclined mud-slinging.
The female vocalists, Lesley Duncan and Clare Torry do a splendid job of representing the females point of view throughout the album. Not only does Eve solidify its main idea, but the songs are highly entertaining with catchy rhythms and intelligent lyrics. Musically, the tempo appealingly switches back and forth from slow to quick, as does the temperament of the album. Somehow, Eve is dismissed as one of this band's greatest efforts, when in fact it's one of their finest marriages of both concept and music.1. Lucifer

Osama (Sam) Shalabi moved to Cairo in 2011, settling in an apartment one block from Tahrir Square, in the midst of Egypt's 'Arab Spring'. Shalabi describes The Big Mango, his new and phenomenal work for his Land Of Kush big band, as "a love letter to Cairo"
framed by "the beautiful,surreal madness of the city as joyous, horrific, historical events were
unfolding". The music was also inspired by time spent in Dakar, where in Senegal's music scene Sam experienced parallels to another of his central aesthetic and political touchstones, Brazilian Tropicalia, in the sense of a "positivity, complexity and radicalism in art that was also
playful and joyous and wasn't necessarily part of a 'revolution' but seemed to be a form of innate radicalism". In tandem with the relative openness of Dakar's Islamic society - with the much more prominent role and presence of women in public and private life and the relaxed physicality and sensuality of the culture in general - Senegalese music offered a powerful counterpoint and feeling of promise for Egypt's own future. "The Big Mango" is one of the many nicknames for Cairo, but for Shalabi it also evokes the succour and sensuality of southern hemispheric music more generally, in this relation to broader socio-political movements.
MontrÉal remains Shalabi's home base and the city to which he briefly returned towards the end of 2012 to reconvene the troupe of players that have helped him realize his large-scale works under the Land Of Kush moniker. Working through The Big Mango score with
these local musicians culminated in two ecstatic live performances and a recording session at MontrÉal's Hotel2Tango studio. This third album by Land Of Kush is arguably the group's most focused and immediately satisfying.
For Shalabi, gender and Arab culture has been a central theme, one he took up explicitly on the previous Kush album Monogamy (2011), and which similarly drives The Big Mango, where once again a series of female vocalists drawn from MontrÉal's indie rock community anchor the work and convey what in most of the North African Arab world remains a
profoundly unrealized though burgeoning spirit of gender equality, participation, expression and liberation. This promise is at the heart of Shalabi's "love letter".
The Big Mango opens with a bubbling Fauvist stew of balafon, flute, electronics and vocalizations which abruptly segue into solo piano and saxophone improvisations - an introductory set of musical mating calls that invoke the album's deeper conceptual and formal preoccupations. The libidinal energy of rock n' roll is then re-situated in a heterodox Middle Eastern context as the album's centerpiece songs unfold: "The Pit", "Mobil Nil",
"Drift Beguine" and "The Big Mango" each marked by propulsive female vocal performances from Ariel Engle, Katie Moore, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and Molly Sweeney respectively.

Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF Doom hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD's 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was turfed by Elektra in 1994 and Subroc (one half of the sibling rhyme duo) passed away, surviving KMD member Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom. The Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, Rhymes Like Dimes, Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' Doomsday features female vocalist Pebbles the Invisible accompanying the masked rhyme avenger on his journey to denounce wack MCs, while on ? he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on Tick, Tick... where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, many of which include snippets of dialogue from Marvel's Dr. Doom series, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial Rap universe, Operation Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy.

LiitalSenegalese griot Aby Ngana Diop was famous for her taasu, a form of oral poetry spoken to the rhythmic accompaniment of sabar and tama drums. Taasu is typically created and performed by griot women (a class of poets, storytellers and/or musicians), with a lead taasukat (practitioner of taasu) performing her distinct style of heightened, rhythmically declaimed speech in call-and-response with a small chorus of female vocalists. (Taasu is seen by some to be a predecessor to rap.) Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Diop developed a reputation for being one of the most sought-after taasukats in Dakar, performing with her backup singers, dancers and drummers at parties, weddings and baptisms of the Dakar elite, including government officials and dignitaries. Aby Ngana Diop was undisputedly the best taasukat of her generation.
In 1994, the Dakar diva released her one and only studio cassette recording, Liital, to the Senegalese market. Liital was groundbreaking in the history of Senegalese music because it was the first commercial recording to feature a traditional female taasukat performing to the modern accompaniment of mbalax, Senegal's quintessential pop genre. The combination of Diop and her backup vocalists with their powerful taasu, along with the driving, complex rhythms of the sabar and tama drums, mixed with key elements of mbalax (such as the syncopated, polyphonic marimba sounds played on the Yamaha DX7 keyboard) was something the Senegalese public had never heard before. But it wasn't only because of the fusion of taasu with mbalax; unlike in other mbalax tunes, the musical arrangements on this cassette are instead peculiarly minimalist and almost trance-like, with static harmonies and melodic figures
playing more of an atmospheric role. The cassette became a huge hit, propelling Diop to a new level of superstardom. It could be heard blasting from taxis and from loudspeakers at house parties, weddings and baptisms for years to come. Liital bridged the gap between the more traditional taasu and the modern mbalax sound, thus appealing to all generations of the Senegalese public - and they simply couldn't get enough of it.
When Aby Ngana Diop died unexpectedly on July 4, 1997, the country mourned her passing, but continued to celebrate her music. Other artists such as Cheikh Lô, Thio Mbaye and Lamine TourÉ released recordings based on some of Diop's taasu and accompanying drum phrases, paying further tribute to her musical legacy. Although this cassette has caught the attention of some African music aficianados who have stumbled upon it in recent years, it remains largely unknown to the wider world. Guillermo Scott Herren is a producer who has been based in Atlanta, Barcelona and New York City. Herren releases music under the aliases
Prefuse 73, Delarosa & Asora, Ahmad Szabo, and Piano Overlord, and is also part of the groups Savath y Savalas, Sons of the Morning, Fudge,
Risil, and Diamond Watch Wrists.
Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta. Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, his first album as Prefuse 73 -- after
lower-key releases as/with Delarosa, Delarosa & Asora, and Savath & Savalas -- not only buried but cut up and spliced voices as well as allowing
some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein.
Surrounded by Silence, the successor to One Word Extinguisher, was released in 2005, featuring collaborations with rappers Ghostface and
Aesop Rock, plus Blonde Redhead and EL-P. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared, titled Reads the
Books. The next Prefuse record, 2006's Security Screenings, was relatively light on collaborations; it featured only two guests, Four Tet's Kieran
Hebden and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. Preparations, featuring Battles drummer John Stanier on one track, followed in 2007, and
Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian appeared in 2009. Herren focused on collaborative projects in 2010, flexing his production muscles via
dates, remixes, or cameos with everyone from Zach Hill (Diamond Watch Wrists) to Oneohtrix Point Never to TV on the Radio. His 2011
production The Only She Chapters continued the familial feeling, with a wealth of features for female vocalists.
A few years later, newly inspired, Herren returned to the Prefuse 73 moniker with a flurry of releases on Temporary Residence Limited -- an outlet
endorsed by friends Nigel Godrich (Ultraísta) and Hebden -- beginning with the 25th entry into the label's Travels in Constants EP series. The
album Rivington Não Rio, featuring guest appearances by Busdriver, Rob Crow, and Helado Negro, was flanked by the EPs Forsyth Gardens and
Every Color of Darkness. During that summer and fall, Herren recorded several sessions with MC Michael Christmas under the name Fudge. The
duo's playful debut full-length, Lady Parts, arrived on Lex Records in September of 2016.
