    Shake Some Action

Shake Some Action was the fifth released in 1976 by the San Francisco band Flamin' Groovies. Recorded in Great Britain and produced by Dave Edmunds, Shake Some Action marked a departure for the group from the blues based / garage rock sound of the earlier records to a more power pop / British invasion direction. This was due to the departure of lead singer Roy Loney, the ascendance of guitarist Cyril Jordan, and the fact that the band moved to England in 1972 and was building a large following there. A certified power pop classic brought to you by 4 Men With Beards on 180 gram vinyl.

Founded by Ron Greco, Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney, the American Garage Rock band The Flamin' Groovies had their start in San Francisco in the mid Sixties. The debut album Supersnazz was released in 1969, containing both re-creations of '50s Rock 'n Roll songs and more melodic tracks. It made the group one of the forerunners of the Power Pop movement of the '70s-a genre the Flamin' Groovies had a major influence on and contributed significant work to.

Supersnazz has achieved a reputation among not just Flamin' Groovies fans, but lovers of Rock & Roll in general. It held up very well across the decades and is still able to make its own case for greatness as an impressive document of straight-ahead Rock & Roll circa 1969. It's both fully contemporary to its time and timeless, which makes the album a classic work. Now finally available again on high quality vinyl.

    Live In San Francisco 1971

The closing of the Fillmore West (actually, the Carousel Ballroom) put a big dent in the 'City By the Bay'. This performance was taken from the closing concerts for the venue. The list of bands that Bill Graham didn't want was also big, and the Flamin' Groovies were on it, for years. Our first manager was Bill's right-hand man and when he quit working for Bill to manage the Flamin' Groovies this did not sit well with Bill, so the Groovies went up and down in Bill's eyes. So it came as a big surprise when we discovered he wanted us for this big and important event, to participate in a series of shows leading up to the closing of this legendary venue. I remember the show well. The difference in playing this gig as opposed to the Whisky-A-Go-Go in L.A. was like night and day. At the Whisky, we were the house band (two summers in a row); att the Fillmore, we were up for grabs. Oh yeah, this was our last show with my good buddy, Roy Loney.

    Fantastic Plastic (Awaiting Repress)

The Flamin' Groovies story goes all the way back to 1965 when the band began as the Chosen Few in their hometown of San Francisco, California. After a name change and a self-released 10-inch album called "Sneakers," which sold amazingly well, the band caught the attention of Columbia who signed them up and sent them into the studio with a big budget to record their first real album, "Supersnazz," on the Epic label. Their next two albums were on Kama Sutra (home of their heroes, The Lovin' Spoonful): "Flamingo," and the now revered classic "Teenage Head." Lead singer Roy Loney left the band right after that and lead guitarist Cyril Jordan moved the group to England with Chris Wilson (formerly of Loose Gravel) taking over as frontman. They continued their style of straight ahead guitar driven rock n' roll but this time with a more 60s rather than 50s influence. A few singles on United Artists, recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales with Dave Edmunds producing, followed in the early '70s. In '76 they signed to Sire Records, who released three true gems of power pop: "Shake Some Action," "Flamin' Groovies Now," and "Jumpin' In The Night." Another lineup change ensued in the next decade with Wilson moving to England and joining the Barracudas. Jordan later formed a new band called Magic Christian while Wilson released solo albums in Europe.

Now in 2017, the lineup featuring Cyril Jordan and Chris Wilson are BACK IN ACTION, as they continue to present their own unique and infectious style of rock n roll with such cult classics as Slow Death, Shake Some Action, Teenage Head, and a new set which includes brand new songs off their new soon-to-be-released album, "Fantastic Plastic. It's hard to say just why the group hasn't gotten the attention they deserve (at least in the USA) but they're back to give everyone another chance at hearing and seeing just why those in the know consider them one of the greatest rock n' roll bands ever.

    Walking The Dog (Discontinued)

One of the artists who defined Memphis Soul and put Stax Records on the map, Rufus Thomas is known for liking his R&B hard-edged, gritty and earthy. That approach served him impressively well on his debut album Walking The Dog.

In contrast to the sleeker, more elaborate production style favored by Motown, Rufus Thomas rejects Pop elements altogether and thrives on rawness on his hits Walking The Dog and The Dog as well as inspired versions of Land Of 1000 Dances (which became a major hit for Wilson Pickett), Lee Dorsey's Ya Ya and John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom.

The title track became his biggest hit. The song was covered by The Rolling Stones in 1964. Many other artists have covered the song, including Aerosmith, Roger Daltrey, Green Day, The Flamin' Groovies, The Sonics, The Trashmen and more.

"Fakebook is the sweetest thing yet from these pure
folks Friendly and warm but not nostalgic. The past is
the present for Yo La Tengo." -Alternative Press

"Yo La Tengo's Fakebook is a sheer delight."- Penthouse

Originally released in 1990, Yo La Tengo's Fakebook is considered by many to be among their best efforts. It is
Yo La Tengo "Unplugged" working out on a handful of original's and a number of obscure would-be hits like The
Kinks "Oklahoma U.S.A.", John Cale's "Andalucia" and the Flamin' Groovies "You Tore Me Down." Their song
"The Summer" and their brilliant take of Daniel Johnston's "Speeding Motorcycle" proved to be the bands first
alternative chart hits. Featuring guitar work by Dave Schramm and production by Gene Holder (The dB's).

    Two Sides To Every Story

Two Sides To Every Story, the criminally long out-of-print solo album from founding Byrds member, Gene Clark, finally returns to vinyl. 35 years after its initial 1977 release on RSO, High Moon Records re-mastered, 180-gram audiophile vinyl LP is presented in stunningly rich and crisp audio fidelity that will shed new light on this underrated, beautifully-crafted Gene Clark classic. The album was produced by Thomas Jefferson Kaye, producer of Clark's masterpiece, No Other, and features an all-star cast of musical co-conspirators: singer Emmylou Harris, banjo-virtuoso Douglas Dillard (The Byrds, Dillard & Clark), Country violin legend Byron Berline, guitarist Jeff Skunk Baxter (Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell), and pedal-steel ace Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones). Gene Clark served as The Byrds chief songwriter in the mid-sixties, penning some of their most essential songs, including Feel a Whole Lot Better, Eight Miles High and You Showed Me.

Clark's inimitable songwriting and singing continue to inspire and influenced countless artists. Among them: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (who recorded TWO of his compositions on their 2010 Grammy® winning Album Of The Year, Raising Sand ), Bob Dylan, Fairport Convention, REM, Tom Petty, Yo La Tengo, the Flamin' Groovies, Teenage Fanclub, and Wilco.

    Beale Street Saturday Night

    Clear Vinyl

Memphis' Beale Street had been a hub of music and activity since the
1860s. As it was being plowed under for "urban renewal" in 1976, James
Luther Dickinson-who had played with The Stones, Ry Cooder and the
Flamin' Groovies (later with Bob Dylan and the Cramps among others), as
well as produced Big Star, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Alex Chilton (also,
The Replacements, Green On Red, and Mudhoney )-decided to not only
celebrate the legacy of great Memphis music, but make it back into the
place where both the blues and rock 'n' roll originated.

A camaraderie of Memphis musicians, photographers, artists, thespians
and "appropriate weirdos" gathered under Dickinson's direction to record
the heart of Beale Street-past and present. From Furry Lewis and Sleepy
John Estes to Sid Selvidge and Dickinson's own Mud Boy & The Neutrons,
Beale Street Saturday Night is an unparalleled audio trip through Memphis
music history. Recorded in places varying from artists' homes, to Ardent
Studios, to The Orpheum Theatre, Beale Street Saturday Night was originally
created as a fundraiser for the Memphis Development Foundation.
This reissue will serve a similar purpose as a portion of the proceeds will
go to support the radio program Beale Street Caravan which focuses on
    Memphis music, new and old.

    Beale Street
Saturday Night features new liners from Jim Lancaster (who worked on
the original issue) and previously unseen photos. This first ever reissue
of Beale Street Saturday Night was done under the supervision and with
the blessing of the Dickinson family, and it finally makes widely available
this important music and historical Memphis document for new audiences
    to discover.

In 1977, Memphis was officially declared "Home of the Blues" by an act
    of Congress. So, welcome home.
