LungsFlorence Welch, an art-school dropout from South London, first gained fame at home with two bombastic singles; Kiss With A Fist and Dog Days Are Over. Not two years after she was discovered while singing Etta James in a club bathroom, she was awarded the 2009 Brit Awards Critics' Choice. She found herself wowing attendee's with her incredible live performance and her now legendary set of pipes.
Her debut album is co-produced by Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Maximo Park), James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow Puppets) and Steve Mackay (PULP, M.I.A), and has already amassed a hefty amount of critical acclaim in the UK. Lungs is made of harps, choirs, drums, quartets, strange electronic wailing, while incorporating countless other instruments and emotions along the way.
The songs are full of Gothic imagery and fairytale flights of fantasy. Her seven-piece band includes long-term collaborators; Rob Ackroyd (guitar), Chris Hayden (drums), Isabella Summers (keyboards) and Tom Monger (harp). Days Are GoneDays Are Gone is the debut album from indie-rock outfit/sisters Haim.
Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Vampire Weekend) and James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys), Days Are Gone is an album years in the making. Since their first show as a group, which took place on July 7th, 2007, Haim have been gigging extensively. The first five years we just played every show we could play in L.A., Alana recalls. All we wanted to do was play. Then finally we realized we were playing too much. The sisters credit Casablancas specifcially for advising them that playing too many live shows is not the answer. To that end, the girls have now been more selective when lining up future tours. Still, as Alana explains, it was hard to turn down opening-slot offers from groups they love, specifically Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons. They take care of me like I'm their little sister, Alana says of the Mumfords, with whom Haim again will be playing support for later this year.
Ask the girls to describe specific tracks on Days Are Gone and they quickly fire back: If I told you I'd have to kill you, Este deadpans. Wait, really? No clues at all? The thing is, she explains, you can ask me anything about anything and I'll tell you except for our music. The record is something we're tight-lipped about. Haim do reveal that the album contains a healthy dose of the songs they've been playing in their live sets - "Falling," "Forever," "Don't Save Me" - in addition to, as Alana says, a lot of new jams. What little they'll reveal about the new material is that the album's title track was co-written with Jessie Ware and Kid Harpoon.
Rolling Stone had a chance to take the new album for a spin, however. And it's every bit worth the wait. There's palpable maturity in the lyrics: On If I Could Change Your Mind, Danielle is a self-admitted newbie at the whole love thing (I've never done this before/drove a million miles/back when you were mine/I was too young to know you were the one to find); later she's brushing off a former lover on Honey & I, then flat-out giving dude the cold shoulder (Honey, I'm not your honey-pie,) over a ripping electric guitar lick and a bass wobble generally reserved for sweaty dance clubs on the pop-friendly My Song 5. Sonically, the LP is a highly textural affair, from the 8-bit keyboard clatter on the title track to the lush, Eighties-style synths that sizzle throughout Running If You Call My Name.

Sleep Forever (Awaiting Repress)Last year Brandon Welchez and Chuck Rowell released their acclaimed debut album, Summer of Hate as Crocodiles. Straddling vast sonic terrains from the jagged guitar stabs of street-strutting lead single Neon Jesus, to throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable disco-punk jams, Summer Of Hate drew comparisons with The Velvet Underground and Primal Scream.
Significantly, it also caught the ear of James Ford, Simian Mobile Disco man and producer of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Florence and the Machine amongst others. Together, all three headed into the desert in early 2010 to create Summer Of Hate's psychedelic, hyptonic and anthemic follow-up. An album that would later be christened Sleep Forever.
Raw it may be, but Sleep Forever is still an unmistakingly more refined beast than its predecessor. Drums and organ whirls envelope you on tracks like Mirrors and Sleep Forever, which nod to Ladies and Gentelman era Spiritualized as much as they do Neu! and The Velvet Undergound.1. Mirrors

I don't make music for myself, says Santigold, matter-of-factly. I pay a lot of attention to that -- making music that's liked by more people than just myself. In a scene driven by bravado, few musicians would ruminate on the Zen-like balance behind creating truly gratifying art. But exploring that intersection between integrity and intrigue has always been central to this idiosyncratic musician's appeal. That, in turn, has culminated in her latest release, '99¢', an often-playful satire on the singer's brand.
The '99¢' album cover features me shrink-wrapped among a cluttered mess of things -- my life in a bag, she explains. It is about how everything is a packaged product for sale: how we package ourselves, our lives, our relationships.
It took roughly eight months to manifest her new vision, with assists from a mix of collaborators with poppier visions such as producers Patrick Berger (Robyn, Icona Pop) and John Hill (Florence and the Machine, Charli XCX), alongside eclectic talents known more for globe-trotting sounds such as Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. She went into the studio with them intending to make a fun record. My last record had a seriousness to it, she says. This time around, it's more playful -- but still a commentary.
Today, any of her dissents veer toward the contemplative. I wanted to write some songs that felt very personal, she says. Before Santigold, in my other band, I used to write songs like journal entries. And I tried to write a couple of songs on this record where it was really about me and my experience. Though, in true Santigold form, she balances the introspective moments with humorous ones in songs like Who Be Loving Me, a lighthearted boast about fan adoration, produced by Zeds Dead and featuring ILoveMakonnen.
You could go around being annoyed all the time, or you can go, 'This is crazy and actually funny.' Then you can play around with it, and make great art, she says. This album has required me to be more open, less of a perfectionist. Ironically, that's made the prismatic '99¢' her most ambitious album to date. I realize that my work is a collage, she says. And I can pretty much take that anywhere.1. Can't Get Enough Of Myself (feat. B.C)

RemixedThe neo-synth pop group Bastille were formed in London, England in 2010. Originally the solo project of singer/songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille expanded to a quartet after he decided to form a band and got some of his friends involved. The band attracted a lot of attention after putting a few tracks online, leading to support slots at major U.K. festivals like Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight. While their lush, heavily '80s-inspired melodies, anthemic choruses, and literate, emotionally raw lyrics, delivered in Smith's swooping voice, undoubtedly appealed to kids weaned on the sounds of La Roux and Florence + the Machine, at least part of the hype was due to the flagrantly copyright-breaching videos that Smith, an ardent film buff, edited together out of footage from old movies like Terrence Malick's Badlands. Eventually they secured a deal with hip indie label Young and Lost Club and released their debut 7" single, Flaws/Icarus, in July 2011. This was followed later that year by Laura Palmer EP, named for the teenaged murder victim in David Lynch's cult '90s TV series Twin Peaks; the creepy accompanying video for the track "Overjoyed" was also heavily inspired by the series. The group returned in 2013 with their debut album Bad Blood.

Restoration: The Songs Of Elton John And Bernie Taupin
Some of the world's biggest pop, rock and country artists are celebrating Elton John's most beloved and legendary catalog of hits with two albums Revamp (Island Records) and Restoration (Mercury Nashville). The superstar lineup features artists both new and iconic reinterpreting the timeless songs of the over 50 year writing partnership that Elton and Bernie Taupin share. These renditions and artists show the depth of the catalog these two icons have created, which can easily cross musical genres and their unparalleled influence across popular music of all styles.
Revamp features the hits reimagined by the best in pop, rock and urban with Mary J. Blige, Alessia Cara, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Florence And The Machine, Lady Gaga, The Killers, Mumford and Sons, P!nk and Logic, Q-Tip ft. Demi Lovato, Queens of the Stone Age, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith,
Restoration highlights countries biggest stars with thoughtful interpretations by Dierks Bentley, Rosanne Cash and Emmylou Harris, Miley Cyrus, Vince Gill and Don Henley, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Brothers Osborne, Chris Stapleton, Rhonda Vincent and Dolly Parton and Lee Ann Womack.
"'It's always a huge compliment when an artist loves your song enough to take the time and effort to rework it," adds Elton John. "As songwriters, Bernie and myself are thrilled when singers we admire and respect as much as those on Revamp & Restoration choose to add their own unique twist in the process. It means that our music is still relevant and ultimately that our songs continue to reach new audiences. We're humbled and thank them all for their generosity."
"Because of our love of all kinds of music, we're not stuck in one genre," said Bernie Taupin. "From day one we borrowed from everything that's good about American music - whether it's blues, country, gospel, pop, pure rock - everything got thrown in the mix. I think that's why our music over the years has been so varied. It would be tiring if you just got stuck in one niche your entire career, especially when it's one as long as ours."
The album art for Restoration was created by Bernie. The rustic musical instruments and flags from both nations is an extension of his mixed-media art that's another form of expression. It symbolizes the role that U.S. culture and its native music has played as a driver in the John/Taupin canon.
"For me, there's an irony about the American flag," Taupin says. "It's been battered and beaten and burned, but it's resilient. It's always come back. I incorporate it with other things, and lately I've done a lot of pieces with deconstructed guitars and other found materials: barbed wire, broken bottles, things that people identify with on an everyday level. If it's on the floor and it works, I'll put it into the artwork. But it all goes hand in hand with my belief in America and my interest, I would say obsession, with Americana."
Revamp has a pop art cover based on the Terry O'Neil photograph of Elton that was recreated in neon. The covers are very different from each other because they represent totally different albums.
"We have two completely different albums; Revamp being the pop one and Restoration being the country one and God we have so many great artists doing our songs, it's quite incredible," said Elton John. "Restoration was Bernie's project and he's a huge country fan. The 'Revamp' was more my project. He came up with an astonishing list of country performers both new and legendary. On Revamp I wrote out a wish list of people that I would love and asked them and to my surprise most of them said yes and we have quite an astonishing eclectic crew."1. Rocket Man - Little Big Town

Be More KindFrank Turner has announced his seventh studio album, Be More Kind, which is set for release via Interscope Records. Months after the release of Songbook, a career-spanning retrospective which also saw reworked versions of tracks from across the past decade, Be More Kind represents a thematic and sonic line in the sand for the 36-year-old. The new album combines raw political and personal universal anthems with the intricate folk and punk roar trademarks of Turner's sound imbued with new, bold experimental shades.
Be More Kind was produced by Charlie Hugall (Florence And The Machine, Halsey) and White Denim's Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block. "I wanted to try and get out of my comfort zone and do something different," says Turner. Originally, he contacted Jenkins and Block at their Niles City Sound studio in Fort Worth, Texas with the idea of recording a soul album in the vein of Dexys Midnight Runners. He found they were equally enthusiastic when he changed his mind and decided he wanted to record a more rock-led album with tints of electronic pop. "I have an obscure corner of my music taste where I'm into glitch electronic music and Warp Records," says Turner. "It's not an electronic record but I got into arpeggiator synths." While 2015's Positive Songs for Negative People was cut in nine intense days, Be More Kind was made over a period of seven months giving Turner the opportunity to turn songs on their head, try different versions, and shake up the dynamics within his band.
Turner was halfway through writing a very different sort of album, a concept record about women from history who had been ignored, when he was reading a collection of Clive James's poetry and one particular line compelled him to re-think his direction. The line, from a poem called Leçons Des TÉnèbres, reads: "I should have been more kind. It is my fate / To find this out, but find it out too late." "It devastated me the first time I read it," Turner says. "A lot of older, wiser people tend to say things like that, that the things that come out in the wash at the end of a human life are the way you treated the people around you. In the modern world, that's a lesson that all of us, myself included, could do to learn."
Turner and his band, The Sleeping Souls, were touring America in 2016 "when the world decided to go collectively nuts" and the songs that make up Be More Kind started to come together. "Somewhere in the record, there's a convergence of the ideas of personal and political, which is a central theme of the album," Turner says. One of the other driving themes of the album is empathy, even for your enemy. "You should at least be able to inhabit the mental universe of the people you disagree with. If you can't do that, then how do you communicate with people other than through force of arms, which is something we all agree is a bad idea."
The first track to be released from Be More Kind is "1933", a clattering, state-of-the-nation anthem. Furious and direct, it's inspired by articles Turner saw that suggested the alt-right was punk rock. "That filled me with a mixture of incredulity and anger," says Turner. "The idea that Breitbart or Steve Bannon think they have anything to do with punk rock makes me extremely angry." The other theme in the track is summed up by the line, "If I was one of the greatest generation / I'd be pissed / I'd be screaming at my grandkids / that we already did this." "These ideas are surfacing again that collectively as a species we've already shot down," says Turner.1. Don't Worry

The Way Is ReadNonesuch Records releases The Way Is Read, a twelve-song album by the English trio The Staves-Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor (all vocals)-and New York City-based ensemble yMusic. After being commissioned in 2016 by Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival to collaborate on a live performance piece, The Staves delved deep into yMusic's catalogue of contemporary classical compositions to find pieces suited to their lyrics and vocals. While the Festival is known for bringing musicians together for one-off performances, this is the first time one of those partnerships has made the leap into a studio album. The LP was produced by Rob Moose and Jessica Staveley-Taylor and mixed and engineered by Brian Joseph at his studio, Hive, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
The two groups will come together live again at a series of special shows at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis on December 1 and 2, and they also will perform on public radio's A Prairie Home Companion on December 16. The Way Is Read is available to pre-order now from iTunes and the Nonesuch Store, along with an instant download of the album track Trouble on My Mind, which can be heard on Spotify. You can watch a video for that song, directed by yMusic flautist Alex Sopp, here:
Emily Staveley-Taylor says of the collaboration, Our aim from the outset was to truly collaborate with yMusic. We wanted to feel like instruments and join in with some of yMusic's existing work, using our voices in ways we hadn't previously explored. We chopped up compositions and put them together again in new ways. We took old folk songs and made them abstract. The idea of forming an orchestra with these incredible musicians was fascinating. What we have ended up with is everything we'd hoped, more than we dreamed, and hopefully the tip of the iceberg.
Rob Moose of yMusic adds, When Justin raised the possibility of our groups collaborating, we immediately upped the stakes by focusing on a combination of new Staves songs and transformations of yMusic's composed works. It was as much a thrill to hear songs emerge organically over sections of intricate chamber music as it was satisfying to strip songs of the instrument that created them, whether guitar or piano, in order to craft new connective tissue. This project was born of voice memos sent back and forth across the seas, two frenetic days in a Manhattan rehearsal space, a festival set, and a single day of recording in the woods outside of Eau Claire.
The Staves, also known as Jessica, Camilla and Emily Staveley-Taylor, moved to Minneapolis from London in the summer of 2016, where they lived for a year in order to be closer to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, friend and collaborator Justin Vernon's hometown, which has become a creative hub and second home to them. The sisters have worked with Stones and Who producer Glyn Johns, as well as Laura Marling and Ryan Adams producer Ethan Johns. In addition to their three albums and several EPs, The Staves have headlined tours across North America and Europe and performed on tours with Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, Angus and Julia Stone, and The Civil Wars. The New York Times said of their 2015 Vernon-produced Nonesuch debut, If I Was, the songs are illuminated from within, and Magnet said, The perfection just goes on and on until you start to wonder: Are they human?
Hailed by Performance Today's Fred Child as one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music, yMusic comprises six New York City instrumentalists-violinist Rob Moose, violist Nadia Sirota, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, clarinettist Hideki Aomori, flutist Alex Sopp, and trumpeter CJ Camerieri-flourishing in the overlap between the pop and classical worlds. Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration has attracted the attention of high profile collaborators-from Paul Simon to Ben Folds to JosÉ González-and inspired an expanding repertoire of original works by some of today's foremost composers, including Nico Muhly and Andrew Norman.1. It's the perfect antidote to these worrying times and will put a big smile back on your face.
"When music's in your DNA, what's gone in will come back out," Sharleen Spiteri says. "'Jump On Board' has references of course, but it's an up-front, modern-sounding record."
'Jump on Board' is the first new Texas studio album since 'The Conversation' in 2013. Having sold over 35 million records with 3 number one albums, 7 top ten albums and 13 top ten singles, 'Jump On Board' looks set to reignite their flame.
