    Exile On Main Street

Ranked 7/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Upon its original 1972 release more than three decades ago, Exile on Main Street innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. The 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richards' mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal 'Main Street' influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album's outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the socio-political turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s.

The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive, more is more approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation.

The album pulled together an electric array of talent including Dr. John, the late Billy Preston, and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Guitarist Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones in the band shortly before Jones died in 1969, is a magnificent blues player who brought an intensity and elegance to these epic tracks. At times, these musicians and others lived on the recording studio premises with the band creating an extremely open and creative collaboration for the album.

Pressed On Audiophile-Grade Vinyl At Pallas Group In Germany

Mastered From Original Analog Tapes By Bernie Grundman

Recorded By Rudy Van Gelder And Produced By Creed Taylor

Recorded in 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio under the production auspices of Creed Taylor, the arrangement and conducting skills of Deodato, and the engineering expertise of Van Gelder himself, Jobim's Stone Flower is quite simply one of his most quietly stunning works. The album is a simply brilliant, velvety, late-night snapshot of Jobim at his peak. This 180gram vinyl reissue was mastered from analog tapes by Bernie Grundman and pressed on audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas in Germany.

    Flowers

Despite being written over the course of a year in four different sessions with four different lineups (but always with frontman Tim Kinsella at the helm), the first listen
reveals the songs on Flowers as a more cohesive unit than those on its predecessor, last year's Boo Human. This experience encapsulates the spirit of Joan of Arc, a mentality that embraces contradictions and tears apart common musical structures, only to rebuild them without a blueprint. Joan of Arc continues to succeed in doing what many strive for with a new album, creating an obscure combination of familiar, obvious ideas while sticking with the notion that if it feels good, do it.

    They're Flowers

Luxury Liners is the new solo project of Carter Tanton. The first single, "Caribbean Sunset," has received praise from Spin for its "synth-built bliss." With lyrics adapted from John Cale's composition and a completely unique melody, the song is a perfect introduction to the warm, summery album. They're Flowers retains a twinkling pop sound filtered through electronic hooks, rich with drum programming and sampling, as Tanton wrote the album primarily on a laptop while on tour with The War On Drugs and his previous band, Lower Dens. A marked distinction from Tanton's previous work, They're Flowers embraces the pop aesthetic while veering into blissful electronic.

Now Is The Time For Hearts & Flowers

Though they are often only referred to in passing, as a sort of footnote of '60s West Coast scene, Los Angeles group Hearts And Flowers were actually one of the most eclectic groups of the time, incorporating elements of psych and country into their folk-rock sound. Founded by Larry Murray, a southern transplant to LA, and a graduate of the same vibrant Southern California bluegrass scene that gave way to Byrds and Burritos, the group's 1967 debut, Now Is The Time For Hearts And Flowers, is a classic album that deserves mention in the same breath as Sweetheart Of The Rodeo or Bradley's Barn. The Expanding Flower Planet

'The Expanding Flower Planet' is an album, a song, a cosmic ideal, a form of psychic expansion and expanded capability. It's original and personal. It transmutes ethereal abstractions into crystalline harmonies and sinuous grooves. It's music nurtured with the idea of healing, exciting, inspiring, enlightening. Drones, dissonance, warmth, and love. Even if you're unfamiliar with Angel Deradoorian's name, you're likely familiar with her voice. As the former bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors, her lepidopteran flights helped buoy the Brooklyn-based group. She's been a member of Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks and sang on Flying Lotus' "Siren Song." Her fist song collection, 2009's Mind Raft EP elicited praise from Pitchfork for being "passionate and lovingly crafted." The Fader hailed her "zen weed energy" and "moody dervish spirals."But her debut LP, 'The Expanding Flower Planet' reflects a remarkable creative journey. In the course of cutting it, Deradoorian realized a more profound communion with music than she'd ever experienced. It's salient in the songs, which glow and warp, burn brightly and float gracefully past sun and assorted stars.

    Forest Flower (Speakers Corner)

It was a clever move by George Avakian, producer at Atlantic Records, to record live the Charles Lloyd Quartet during their appearance in Monterey, and to release the LP under the title Forest Flower. Although the hippy flower-power movement tended towards a rather different musical genre at the end of the Sixties, they were blown away by this music. The four artists attracted masses of people and ensured that every seat was taken and all standing room filled at jazz festivals such as Newport, Molde (Norway), Antibes (France) and the Fillmore East and West. The super group also appeared in Monterey, 120 Km south of San Francisco, the centre of the hippy movement, on 18 September 1966.

On the LP we have the almost 18-minute-long title piece and the standard work East Of The Sun, which were recorded at the festival. The disc is complemented by a Keith Jarrett composition and one by Cecil McBee, both of which were recorded in the studio ten days before the festival.
Of particular note is the rich interplay, the energy that is palpable throughout, the perfect harmony in each and every change of mood, and the intensity. Even 50 years later, it is quite clear that Charles Lloyd managed to break down the barriers between pop and jazz.

Charles Lloyd is committed to this objective to this very day! All four musicians are still active, although they no longer appear together as a group. Such a special treat for the ears is offered by this newly mastered disc only

    Musicians:

    • Charles Lloyd (tenor saxophone, flute)
    • Keith Jarrett (piano)
    • Cecil McBee (bass)
    • Jack DeJohnette (drums)

Recording: September 1966 live at Monterey Jazz Festival by Wally Heider

    Production: George Avakian

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

BRANT BJORK, as cult figure of the Palm Desert scene, was founder / drummer of the now defunct Stoner-Rock legends Kyuss and is a permanent member of Vista Chino (formerly KYUSS Lives!). Now, he is sailing under his own flag, proving once again that his multi-instrumental skills know no creative boundaries. With his excellent occupied Low Desert Punk Band, Bjork lets the scorching heat of Nevada shimmer in his songs. He also scrubs his guitar through all sorts of psychedelic effect pedals and skillfully mixes Stoner Rock, Blues and Doom-bonds to a feverish hazy brew.

I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70

Compilation And Notes By Alec Palao

An Exclusive New Interview With Sly Stone Himself

In-depth Liner Notes With First-hand Reminiscences Of The Stone Flower Era From Many Of The Participants

Features All Five Stone Flower Produced Singles Plus Ten Previously Unissued Cuts From The Label Archives

All Tracks Newly Remastered From The Original Tapes

In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly's musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower's releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly's design and musicianship stamped into the grooves-and the words "Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone" on the sticker.

Set up by Stone's manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone's little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too-the imprint folded in 1971-but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower's output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly's productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There's A Riot Goin' On.

The first 45 came in February 1970: Little Sister's dancefloor-ready "You're The One" hit Number 22 in the charts-the label's highest showing. The follow-up, "Stanga, also by Little Sister, made the wah pedal the star. The third release came from 6IX, a six-piece multi-racial rock group whose sole release, a super-slow version of The Family Stone's "Dynamite, featured only the lead singer and harmonica player from the group. Joe Hicks was the final Stone Flower stablemate; his pulsing, electronic Life And Death In G&A" is one of the bleakest moments Sly Stone ever created on disc (Hicks' prior single for Scepter, "Home Sweet Home," the first released Stone Flower production, is also included).

This long overdue compilation of Sly's Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you'll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There's A Riot Going On. I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70 opens up the mysteries of an obscure but monumental phase in Stone's career.

On their second full length album, Ltd. Form, Silk Flowers has managed to both develop and further diversify their sound while embracing high end production values with help from underground crossover noise artist/Mark Ronson collaborator, MNDR. Although some underground synth bands might implode under these circumstances, Silk Flowers has managed to take full advantage, adding much greater breadth, warmth and complexity to their songs without sacri ficing any of their raw, idiosyncratic charm.

"Steeped in indie lore, in a charming, self-effacing way of translating emotion into sound" CLASH MUSIC

London based trio Flowers ends their live shows with singer Rachel Kenedy utterly still, accompanying herself on a one string bass guitar, soul laid bare. It is a stark and quiet moment in comparison to what came before, which can be characterized by Sam Ayres blur of kinetic energy on guitar and Jordan Hockley's urgent and precision drumming all performed with a sense of minimalism and brevity. It is this minimalist approach that best characterizes the fourteen deceptively simple pop songs that comprise Flowers debut, Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do.

Produced by Bernard Butler, Flowers' genius is in their ability to convey a remarkable amount of emotion with minimal instrumentation. Rachel possesses one of those beautiful pop voices to die for, with echoes of Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays). Haunting, mesmerizing and intense, Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do is an impressive calling cared from a sensational new band.

Of Horses, Kids, And Forgotten Women

Originally released in 1968, Hearts And Flowers' second and final album, Of Horses, Kids, and Forgotten Women, is mentioned mostly in passing as the major recording debut of future Eagle, Bernie Leadon. This is totally unfair as the album is a classic slice of late '60s West Coast psychedelic country-rock that is as good as or better than their amazing debut. Reissued here on 180g vinyl with a deluxe tip-on jacket from 4 Men With Beards.

    Flamingo

Produced by Stuart Price, Daniel Lanois and Brendan O'Brien and featuring guest vocals by Jenny Lewis, Flamingo is a brilliant collection from an artist whose voice and songwriting prowess have left an indelible mark on the music world, most notably with his band the Killers. Inextricably tied to Las Vegas in both showmanship and ideology, Flamingo is packed full of sparkling, stadium-ready songs that run the gamut from expert pop executions and forlorn electro dirges to gospel tunes and even blues-tinged rock.

    J'Accuse Ted Hughes

Another great installment in Sonic Youth's SYR series, this one features the two engrossing, lengthy pieces: J'Accuse Ted Hughes and Agnes B Musique. The former was recorded at All Tomorrow's Parties in 2001, when the band was premiering material from their NYC Ghosts & Flowers album, while Agnes B Musique was originally intended as a soundtrack piece for a collaboration with the French designer from which the song was named.

We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic

We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic is a precocious and cocksure joyride across California psychedelia with a burning, bursting punk rock engine. In the same year as Scott McKenzie the singer of San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) leaves this mortal coil, Foxygen delivers unto us the dandy Glockenspiel-packing San Francisco, which both circumvents and dissects McKenzie's tune and its many cousins of the era.
