For Emma, Forever AgoPronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.1.Flume

Blood BankBon Iver's four-song Blood Bank collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago.
While still tied to the identity of the place where it was born, Bon Iver is no longer an unplanned entity synonymous with Justin Vernon. It is an idea, a place and sentiment that has now become as international as it is timeless. From the title tracks remembrance of the winter warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem Babys, Bon Ivers snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still, there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down of time. As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that gets you through it.
Bon Iver has grown to include more than what was available at the much-fabled Wisconsin cabin, such as piano, slide guitar and vocoder. As Justin layers on harmonies in the meditative R&B acapella The Woods, he declares Im building a still to slow down the time. It is as poetic as it is necessary. Both expansive and intimate, these four songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a dynamic glimpse into the natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernons music.1. A Church That Fits Our NeedsA Church That Fits Our Needs, the second album by North Carolina group Lost In The Trees, is underway, announcing itself as a work of vaulting ambition, a cathedral built on loss and transformation. In the summer of 2009, Ari Picker, writer, composer and architect of the band, lost his mother, an artist in her own right, when she took her own life. Picker was in the midst of releasing his bands debut album, All Alone in an Empty House, a collection of folk-inflected songs that surprised with its orchestral arrangements, to an acclaim usually reserved for seasoned veterans: both heart wrenching and beautiful, said Paste, while the Huffington Post called the album spellbinding in its musical ambition, touching in its intimacy, and often overwhelming in its emotional honesty. Picker took the loss of his mother and set about transforming the events into a tribute, composing, writing lyrics, his mothers picture above his writing desk: the same picture that now graces the albums cover. I wanted to give her a space, in the music, to be, and to become all the things she didnt get a chance to be when she was alive.
The result is A Church That Fits Our Needs, an album that can stand beside musical journeys like Neil Youngs Tonights the Night and Bon Ivers For Emma, Forever Ago. Pickers astonishing voice, an instrument that veers from Carl Wilsons emotional purity to the otherworldly abstractions of Thom Yorke, opens our window into this intensely emotional music. While this might sound like a somber affair, A Church That Fits Our Needs is anything but. Picker, a classically trained composer, has Shostakovich and Stravinsky at his fingertips, but the music on this album speaks just as much to his love of Phil Spector and old film scores. Above all this is pop music, in the way that A Day In the Life or Radioheads No Surprises are pop music, seeking to present complex ideas to the widest possible audience. This is the album Picker set out to make, a celebration of the woman he calls a warrior, and a testament to the power of music to heal and transcend.1. Moment One

ConnectSick Puppies is a three piece rock band that formed in Australia in the late 1990s. The current lineup for the band is Shimon Moore on guitar, Emma Anzai on bass and Mark Goodwin on drums. In the early 2000s the band, which at the time did not include Mark, moved to the states to start their career as a professional rock band. They were signed to Virgin Records and released their second album, Dressed Up As Life which has sold over 200,000 copies in the United States and abroad since it's release in 2007. The band furthered their career and released their third full length album Tri-Polar in 2009 which featured hits such as, You're Going Down, Riptide, Maybe and Odd One.
Connect is an album that takes all types of Sick Puppies sound and combines it all into one. You have hints of Welcome To the Real World, Dressed Up As Life and Tri-Polar in the album. You have the hard rock and heavy bass songs such as, Die To Save You, There's No Going Back, Walk Away, Gunfight and The Trick The Devil Did; and you have the ballads, Poison, Where Did The Time Go, Telling Lies, Connect, Run, Healing Now and Under A Very Black Sky. The album comes together really well and isn't the bad kind of overpowering. Fans, if you've been anxiously awaiting this album to see if it's good; I'm here to tell you that this album is very good and worth the wait.
My Favorite Song Is... There's No Going Back. The song starts right off the bat with a very rhythmic acoustic guitar. The chorus then comes in and hits you with very strong lyrics. There's no going back / when life's a loaded gun / you pull the trigger, trigger / There's no going back / the past is in the past / thank God it doesn't last forever /. The use of Emma as a backup vocalist has always been something I wanted the band to do in every song, and this song, her small presence gives it such a bigger presence on the album. There's No Going Back is also the band's first single off the album.

Range Of LightS. Carey's chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of beauty - perfect given how
landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of Carey's imagery. His new album Range of Light - the
follow-up to his 2010 debut All We Grow-takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir
- Carey's hero - gave to California's Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and
shade, drawn from Carey's love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. Like a weathered mountain range
changing shadow form and color, or the ebb and flow of a river's current, his music is simultaneously restful
and rhythmic, complex and simple, and always evolving.
"My music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences," says Carey. I
travelled the Sierra Nevada area many times as a boy, fishing small mountain streams, hiking to the top of'half
dome', exploring the Redwood groves at Wawona, in awe of the Yosemite Valley. The term,'Range of Light',to
me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life - peaks and valleys of happiness,
sorrow, challenges and growth - for me most recently and more specifically: marriage, having a baby, and
maintaining a spiritual connection to nature, place, friends and family as an adult."
While he studied classical percussion and piano at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Carey imbibed
rhythmic minimalists such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Immediately after graduating in 2007, he caught
wind that Eau Claire resident Justin Vernon was forming a band to take his For Emma, Forever Ago opus on
the road. Carey learnt the drum and vocal parts for the album, rehearsed with Vernon, and has been a mainstay
of the Bon Iver live band ever since.
While on tour with Bon Iver, Carey developed his own song writing ambitions, and after many less than
frequent recording sessions between tours, released All We Grow in 2010. Those nine songs sat between a
folk/modern classical hybrid and rarefied jazz climes. Carey's warm melodic nuances, reflected in the lush
folds of his singing, added to the mutable percussive syncopations of his instrumentation.
Range of Light incorporates elements of his previous work, but also amplifies Carey's percussive proclivities,
and is altogether more developed than its predecessors, with more input on the performance and even
composition side from the band of musicians and best friends he assembled originally to bring All We Grow
to life in the live setting. "Therewere times during recording sessions when there were three percussionists, all
with different styles and fortes, playing at once, adding different textures."
From the flurry of violins over a circular rhythm in 'Crown The Pines' and the beautiful cries of 'Alpenglow',
to the pensive depths of songs like 'Fire-scene' and 'The Dome', Range of Light is a still life of an artist in this
particular stage of his life; a stage that has been met with the highest of peaks and the lowest of depths all
within the range each of us treads through.1. Glass/Film

The King's GiftA Christmas album of Celtic carols, The King's Gift ("Tiodhlac An Righ," in Gaelic) pays tribute to an ancient genre and transports the listener to a time of mystery and valor. Last Christmas (2012), Trace's Celtic version of "We Three Kings" was released and will be featured on the album.
Esteemed guests join Adkins on his first-ever holiday album since his Platinum debut sixteen years ago. Guests include renowned Irish ensemble, The Chieftains; Scottish vocalist Alyth McCormack, British folk/pop star Emma Stevens, multi-award winning family group, The Isaacs; Kevin Costner and daughter Lily Costner; and legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff. The keyboards, acoustic, steel and bass guitars of American folk music harmonize with the weissenborn, mandolin, uilleann pipe, penny whistle, violin, viola, cello, harp, and organ.
"The Christmas Show" Tour begins a new Adkins holiday tradition for years to come. Envisioned as a theatrical production, Trace will alternate between fireside story-telling of anecdotes (both personal and historical) and performances of classic carols with a 12 piece ensemble - a quartet string section, female vocalists and a range of traditional instruments. The tour is inspired by Adkins' annual hosting duties at Disney World's Candlelight Processional, where his deep baritone narrates Christmas stories, while a full choir and orchestra performs. It has always been a highlight of Trace's year and he is thrilled to bring his own unique version of this concept on tour.1. Wexford Carol

I Love You, HoneybearI Love You, Honeybear was recorded intermittently from 2013 to 2014 in Echo Park, Los Angeles and produced with Jonathan Wilson, whom I also recorded and produced 2012's Fairly Fun with. There's a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like solo-era John Lennon, Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn, while taking more than a few cues from Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Muhammad Ali. Blammo.
It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker. The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I'm pretty sure there's a sitar in there somewhere. Blammo. My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love,
the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice. Blammo.
This material demanded a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before the process revealed itself. The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of loving someone. There: I said it. Blammo.

SalomeMarriages is a new band comprised of Red Sparowes members Emma Ruth Rundle (vocals, guitar), Greg Burns (bass, synthesizer) and David Clifford (drums). Their sound is a singularly sensual kind of heavy, dramatic rock, but perhaps the most stark contrast to their other band, Marriages employs vocals in their songs. Their music is also considerably darker and more experimental, drawn from a wide range of styles and ideas. Emma's breathy, understated delivery provides a focal point, the eye of the proverbial storm. A haunting presence, as elusive as it is alluring, her voice is a shore upon which waves of overdriven bass, thunderous drums, and cosmic guitars and synths swell and crash.
Kitsune is their 6-song debut release, a short introduction of an album whose undeniably epic proportions suggest massive things to come. Recorded with the formidable Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Red Sparowes, Tool) at the controls, Kitsune presents a collection of poignant, emotionally-charged tracks that wriggle free of easy classification. The comparisons are diverse; Cocteau Twins and Zola Jesus would appear to be as influential as Boris and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The songs came together quickly as the band wrote and played their first shows in November of 2011 and wrapped recording in January of 2012.
Album opener Ride in My Place sets the tone, immediately revealing the undulating, reverb-cloaked darkness at the band's core. Sounding not unlike PJ Harvey fronting an overdriven rendition of Pink Floyd's Echoes, the fittingly-titled song arrives as a fully-formed companion piece for expansive landscapes, perhaps traversing the vastness of the American west. Hardly overstaying its welcome, the track soon gives way to Body of Shade, whose cryptic lyrics suggests a sort of transcendence echoed in the music itself while Clifford's steady backbeat, the tense rhythm and the swirling interplay of synth and cascading guitars recall the finer moments of The Verve's early recordings.
Opening with a celestial keyboard loop and quickly gaining weight, third track Ten Tiny Fingers builds upon a heavy dirge-like rhythm punctuated by Rundle's vocals, which by now clearly occupy a place among esteemed peers such as Chelsea Wolfe and label mate Lisa Papineau. The song's cryptic, claustrophobic lyrics, contrasted with a loose (but by no means less thunderous) atmosphere and sense of impending collapse bring to mind The Cure, circa Pornography. The next track, Pelt, is born from the decaying remnants of Ten Tiny Fingers. A menacingly hypnotic three-minute meditation on minimalist doom, it serves as the perfect introduction to the distorted, bass-driven hard rock and wailing psychedelia of instrumental track White Shape.
Seven-minute closer Part the Dark Again is a song whose cinematic scope recalls precisely the kind of grandiosity the Red Sparowes are synonymous with, taken to its logical extreme. The impassioned, struggling-against-the-odds sentiment of the vocals takes things over the top emotionally, culminating in a soaring, melancholic riff that grinds to a halt far earlier than you'd expect. Throughout, Rundle unassumingly steps to the forefront, showcasing her unique talents as a guitarist often overlooked within the Red Sparowes' three guitar onslaught.
Kitsune is an exciting debut release from a band well aware of their potential, harnessing the skills to fulfill it. ChromaticsWhen songwriter and producer Sam Genders last donned his Diagrams hat, captive listeners found themselves truly stunned by the Streatham Hill artist's imaginative and inventive arrangements that made up 2012s debut album Black Light. Having now upped sticks from his London lodgings and settled in Sheffield with a new lease of life and wife, fresh pastures and friendships are what form the heart of Diagrams' brand new album Chromatics.
"Relationships are a constant thread. In all their frustrating, exciting, mundane, beautiful, wonderful, sexy, scary glory," reveals Genders of the album's themes. "And there's lots of hope in the songs. They shouldn't be taken too literally mind you in my head Chromatics is life in Technicolor; with all its ups and downs."
Equally drawing inspiration from the writing on relationships by David Schnarch, Ester Perel and the book Division Street by Sheffield poet Helen Mort, whilst spending time in his own home studio for the first time, it's without doubt that the Steel city provided the ideal backdrop for Genders to write whenever the inspiration came and, essentially, whittle down the fifty or so tracks he had recorded as part of the album's creation. "There are woods over the road and a little garden out the back with a greenhouse, shed, and flower beds. Being in a new place has brought something special to the process. Sheffield is a very open and direct place and I'd say the songs are more that way too."
Whilst Black Light fizzed with electronic effects, synth-bass, programmed beats and low-key funk grooves that brought about comparisons to the leftfield pop of Arthur Russell, Metronomy, Steve Mason and Hot Chip, it's without doubt that Genders' next offering falls closer to home comforts and marks the next step in Genders' renaissance. Take lead track 'Phantom Power'; it's the track which truly sums up what it's like to find yourself forever reassessing. "It's about feeling like you're losing a grip on your sanity at one moment, then feeling inspired and up for anything the next. Or frustration with yourself yet believing that it's possible to sort yourself out," explains Genders. Elsewhere 'You Can Talk To Me's delicate rolling melody and 'Serpent' once again showcase the playful, eclectic slant to Genders' songwriting prowess alongside an innate sense of crisp production and programming techniques.
Never one to shirk away from those around him, Genders would be the first to call Diagrams, and particularly Chromatics, a collaborative process. Once again featuring a rolling cast of inspirational musicians the album includes vocals from, amongst friends and family members, The Smoke Fairies whilst the skilled brass and string arrangements come courtesy of Danyal Dhondy and Sam Ewens. 'London's greatest' drummers Karl Penney, and Cacophony drummer Fletcher Adams provide the beats whilst live band members Emma Black and Ben Malitskie lend their expertise of Baritone Saxophone and Viola. 'Brain' meanwhile, was co-written with long-time friend and collaborator Matt McKenzie and features an in utero recording of his son James' heartbeat.
Yet it's the partnership with producer Leo Abrahams (Wild Beasts, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, Ed Harcourt, Marianne Faithful et al) that has truly brought Diagrams to life. After a long search, Abrahams was picked to piece all parts together and as a result Genders found himself writing songs that worked across a variety of production styles. "Leo's incredibly good at what he does and virtually all the impressive production and soundscaping is down to him. He's also an amazing guitarist and played some of my favourite guitar moments on the album."
Who knows exactly what kind of relationships will inspire Genders next? Currently finding himself midst China's south central city of Changsha in Hunan as a Musician in Residence on behalf of the British Council and PRS foundation, life for Genders right now is all about new experiences, meeting new faces and learning from new friendships. "It feels like anything could happen from one day to the next. I'd like to record a Chinese version of 'Phantom Power' so that once I'm back in the UK I can reconnect with the music lovers I've met. I've heard lots of very poppy pop songs that incorporate both Chinese and English lyrics so I'd like to try my own twist on that."1. Phantom Power

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording)Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, produced by Jason Howland and Steve Sidwell with Kurt Deutsch serving as executive producer, was recorded Feb. 17.
The musical's score comprises songs Carole King penned with Gerry Goffin as well as tunes Barry Mann wrote with Cynthia Weil.
Based on King's life and music, Beautiful had its world premiere earlier this season at San Francisco's Curran Theatre. The Broadway production began previews Nov. 21, 2013, prior to an official opening Jan. 12 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing produce the musical that features a book by Academy Award nominee Douglas McGrath, who collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway. He also penned Infamous and Emma.
Marc Bruni (Pipe Dream, Ordinary Days, Old Jews Telling Jokes) stages the production with choreography by Josh Prince and musical direction by Jason Howland.
Tony Award nominee Mueller (Mystery of Edwin Drood, On a Clear Day, Nice Work If You Can Get It) stars as King. Appearing as her musical collaborators are Jake Epstein (Degrassi, Spider-Man) as Gerry Goffin, Anika Larsen (Xanadu, Avenue Q) as Cynthia Weil and Jarrod Spector (Jersey Boys) as Barry Mann. Principal casting also includes Jeb Brown as producer/publisher Don Kirshner and Liz Larsen as King's mother, Genie Klein.
The ensemble features Ashley Blanchet, E. Clayton Cornelious, Joshua Davis, Alysha Deslorieux, Kevin Duda, James Harkness, Carly Hughes, Sara King, Rebecca LaChance, Douglas Lyons, Chris Peluso, Gabrielle Reid, Rashidra Scott, Sara Sheperd, Yasmeen Sulieman, Daniel Torres, Melvin Tunstall and Alan Wiggins.
The complete creative team includes Derek McLane (set design), Alejo Vietti (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Brian Ronan (sound design), Charles G. LaPointe (wig and hair design), Steve Sidwell (orchestrations and music arrangements), Jason Howland (music supervision) and John Miller (music coordination).
Here's how the creators bill the musical: Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.
Beautiful is produced by Paul Blake, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Jeffrey A. Sine, Richard A. Smith, Mike Bosner, Harriet N. Leve/Elaine Krauss, Terry Schnuck, Orin Wolf, Patty Baker/Good Productions, Roger Faxon, Larry Magid, Kit Seidel, Lawrence S. Boss Television SoundtrackOriginal Television Soundtrack (Various Artists) with Music by Brian Reitzell. The series follows Tom Kane, the mayor of Chicago, who has recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, Kane conceals the disease from everyone around him except his own physician, Dr Ella Harris. Those around Kane are too busy with their own lives to notice anything unusual. Kane's marriage to his wife Meredith is nothing more than one of convenience. Kane's closest advisors, Kitty O'Neill and Ezra Stone, begin to suspect something is wrong with the Mayor but respect him too much to ask any questions, while State Treasurer Ben Zajac is too busy cultivating his political ambitions to become the next Governor of Illinois to notice anything out of the ordinary. Kane's daughter, Emma, is the only one who suspects that something is wrong with her father. But does she know enough to uncover his secret and what will it mean for his political career?1.
