    After his great success as a new discovery through playing on tour and in the studio with Art Blakey's creative and inspirational group, the Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard made a dozen LPs over 16 years for Blue Note and Impulse under his own direction.
    It was no wonder then that a big record company made him a lucrative offer in autumn 1966. All in all, Atlantic Records released six LPs and the very first, entitled Backlash, is still until today the best of the bunch.


    Three numbers by Freddie Hubbard, one by Bob Cunningham, and two by friends, provide the basis for a successful transition between hard bop and soul beat. Hubbard made high demands on his fellow musicians James Spaulding, Albert Dailey and especially the bass player Bob Cunningham and the drummer Ray Appleton because they had to cope with the ever-changing beat. Right from the very first note, it is obvious that Freddie Hubbard had Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown in his heart and fingers. All the titles are excellent. Of special note, however, is Little Sunflower. The sound colouring of the flute harmonizes particularly well with Hubbard's brass, and Ray Barretto's contribution is more than mere decoration. You're certainly on the right track with this LP, no matter whether it's the beginning of a Freddie Hubbard collection or a further contribution to a large jazz collection.


    This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    third time in 1971 with the express purpose of making
    a record radically different from anything he'd cut
    before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be
    out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious
    and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor
    and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie
    Hancock , Eric Gale, George Benson, Ron Carter,
    Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, and Richard Wyands.
    The album is part of a loose trilogy including his two

    Recorded between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's better-known classics Red Clay and First Light, Straight Life is actually arguably Hubbard's greatest recording. Hubbard, joined by an all-star group that includes tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, keyboardist Herbie Hancock, guitarist George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, is frequently astounding on Straight Life (check out that introduction) and Mr. Clean, constructing classic solos. The very memorable set is rounded off by the trumpeter's duet with Benson on a lyrical version of the ballad Here's That Rainy Day.     Freddie Hubbard was one of the most prolific jazz trumpeters in the business. He played a hot and sassy horn! When he was teamed up with George Benson, Jack DeJohnette and Ron Carter (just to name a few) on this one of many Creed Taylor-produced collaborations, he most deservedly won the Grammy!


    The opening title song First Light has an ethereal beginning with a diverse arrangement. An unusual arrangement of Paul McCartney's Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is most satisfying. Henry Mancini's Moment To Moment has a hauntingly sweet sound. Lonely Town is darkly complex.


    There are many sides and moods to each of the songs within this original work. With stylish jazzy rhythms and rich orchestrations, this is THE Freddie Hubbard album to have!

    Randy Weston - now an elderly gentleman and one of the few living witnesses and co-creators from the heyday of hard bop - still leaves his home in Brooklyn to tour through Africa, Europe and Asia. A truly multicultural man. His percussive style has been influenced in particular by the ethnic music of Morocco; his amazing sense for the sounds produced by North-African melodic and rhythmic instruments has enriched his music over many years.
    After seven years without making any recordings, Blue Moses was recorded in 1972 in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Lengthy trips through North Africa and as far as the Niger, plus the ignorance of American record companies, were the reasons for the long pause. Finally the CTI producer Creed Taylor took an interest in Randy Weston and financed a large ensemble with Don Sebesky as arranger.
    The four themes provide a great basis for improvisations by the soloists, whereby the Randy Weston's piano takes the lion's share. The flute is also very prominent - and no wonder: it is played by Hubert Laws. It is quite possible that many jazz fans will have missed the name Randy Weston when flipping through the letter 'W' in record shops in the 70s. Now they have the opportunity to correct this mistake with this re-release

    Blow-Up is a soundtrack album by Herbie Hancock featuring music composed for Michelangelo Antonioni's cult film Blow-Up, released in 1966. Musically the songs evoke the ambience of swinging Sixties' London with grooves that create effective bluesy Jazz moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.


    The album features performances by Hancock on keys, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Newman on trumpet, Phil Woods and Joe Henderson on sax, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Rumours go that either the fabled Jimmy Smith or Paul Griffin played the Hammond organ on this record.


    Rock fans remember the film and the soundtrack for the inclusion of a rare Yardbirds number, Stroll On (actually, an adaptation of Tiny Bradshaw's The Train Kept A-Rollin'), one of only three songs they recorded with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars. The bassline to Bring Down The Birds was sampled by Deee-Lite for their 1990 hit single Groove Is In The Heart featuring Bootsy Collins.
