SUM/ONEbEEdEEgEE is the performing alias of Brian DeGraw, an American artist, musician and producer who lives and works between the inner city
and the Catskill region of New York state. Most commonly known in the
music world for his work at the center of the experimental electronic
act Gang Gang Dance and their musical mastery, SUM/ONE is his debut
record as a solo artist.
Written and recorded over the course of a year in his Woodstock studio,
the W0RMB1N, SUM/ONE initially began life when Brian left New York
City - his home for the past twelve years - for the clouds of Woodstock.
Amidst the peace of this new environment, the audio sketches he
worked on gradually evolved into a project that fuses the deep synth
soundscapes with audacious pop moments that characterise Gang Gang
Dance. The nine tracks that comprise SUM/ONE also feature the vocal
talents of Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Lovefoxxx (CSS),

Best BlessBest Bless is the debut EP from Sleepy Doug Shaws Highlife. Shaw moved from his hometown of London, England at the age of 19, arriving onto the NYC music scene in 2003. At that time accompanied by only by an acoustic guitar, he was soon showcasing his preternatural singing abilities and strong focused fingerpicking blues skills around the city playing under the moniker Sleepy Doug Shaw; and before long he had joined the entrancing psychedelic soul band White Magic.
Highlife was born in 2008 when Shaw, along with White Magic collaborator Mira Billotte, retreated from New York to the small island of Gaspar Grande off the coast of Trinidad, at the southernmost point of the Carribean trail.
It was at Southern Studios in London that full-band versions of the songs were recorded by the brilliant Harvey Birrel (Crass, Sir Richard Bishop, Buzzcocks). The new long player was recorded in New York City over the last year with producer Chris Coady (Smith Westerns, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Blonde Redhead), and will land in the middle of the band's 5 month tour of Europe, America & Australia.
Asked to comment on the unusual title, bassist Chris Cain explains, It's in French, I think. At least some of the words.
Singer and guitarist Keith Murray elaborates: We wanted to get at the seemingly inevitable parallax that happens between two people in a relationship, that sense that you get the gist of what the other person needs and wants and how they feel about you, but only the gist - you're relying on these broad cues a lot of the time to tell you what the hell's going on.
We Are Scientists exploded onto the U.K. scene with one of 2005's iconic indie dance rock records, 'With Love & Squalor'. Years of touring followed, as did a second album, 'Brain Thrust Mastery', that spawned now-classic nightlife anthem 'After Hours' (a #11 charting single). Main stage slots at Reading & Leeds,
Glastonbury, T In The Park, and festivals all over Europe, as well as appearances on Later with Jools Holland, and their own series of comedic MTV shorts ('Steve Wants His Money'), followed by third album 'Barbara'. all served to cement and increase their legacy.
Now, after releasing a 7-inch and a 5-song EP in 2013, the band prepare to share their finest collection of songs to date.
According to Cain, The guy who was producing everything looked different from the one who did those other three records.
Murray further enthuses, Yeah, working for the first time with Chris Coady as producer had a huge effect - he has such a distinct and well-developed sense of what's cool and what sounds good, but he's also emphatic about keeping the rawness of the performances in there.
Drummer Andy Burrows, who also recorded 'Barbara' with W.A.S., relocated to New York for a year to work on the new album, and lends his world-class efforts behind the kit and elsewhere.

Guilt TripsCanada's own Ryan Hemsworth has become one of the fastest rising producers and remix artist in the past couple of years. "For this project, I wanted to just expand on everything, lay as much as I could out on the table," he explains. "There's a lot more of me on this than my last projects. With a lot of the songs, I had high school in mind and during that time I was making music with my voice, guitar, and samples, so I've gone back to the first two a bit more, and also getting help from vocalists. Some of the club music that I've been surrounded by in the past year can be really cold, so I think once you throw in more melody and emotion that can only come from the human voice and guitar, it becomes a lot warmer."
"I reached out to friends and people I admire really. I wanted kind of unexpected collaborations and people with a uniqueness to them, instead of just reaching out to random top-liners. Someone like Lofty305, who has a weird, certainly not trained voice, made sense for "Against A Wall" because I wanted it to match the mood of the track. That's so much more important to me than making a perfect song. I just wanted to flesh out that charming imperfection on a lot of the tracks. When I asked the people on it to do their parts, I didn't direct them too much but just asked them to think of a breakup or a time when they felt weird or shitty from love. In the early seventies, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were playing in rock and soul bands across New York City and the east coast, meeting up with Tony Thompson along the way and forming the rudiments of what would become one of the most powerful and successful r&b units ever known as Chic.
In 1977, they hit the top of the charts a couple of times with their smash debut single Dance, Dance, Dance as well as the killer funk of Everybody Dance.
The first album simply titled Chic also featured some very amazing playing and more deep soul tracks like Sao Paulo, You Can Get By and the funk infused Strike Up The Band.
Along with vocalists Alfa Anderson, Norma Jean Wright and future superstar Luther Vandross, Chic was the band of choice for party people, dance clubs, and radio stations all over with this debut album.
With star power tracks and their stellar instrumental funk infused musicianship, Chic's debut became a staple at retail and on the dancefloors and started a trend which has now lasted over four decades for this Rock Hall Of Fame winning band.

Wayne Kramer is a songwriter whose reputation writing music for film and television could very well supplant his legend as one of the world's stellar
guitarists. Wayne was a teenage greaser and leader of the MC5, widely recognized as the prototype for punk rock and heavy metal. In 1969, the MC5
released the incendiary album Kick Out The Jams on Elektra Records. After Elektra dropped them due to "radical antics", they released two albums on
Atlantic: Back In The USA, produced by Bruce Springsteen's manager Jon Landau and the masterpiece High Time. Between world tours, Wayne scored
Gold and The Living Theatre's film production of Paradise Now.
Wayne spent 1976-1978 in Lexington Federal Penitentiary, where he was tutored by fellow inmate Red Rodney, trumpeter for the Charlie Parker Quintet.
It was Red who taught Wayne how to read music and the two formed a prison band. After release, Wayne co- wrote the acclaimed R&B musical The Last
Words of Dutch Schultz with Mick Farren, then joined Don Was' revolutionary acid funk band Was (Not Was) as its original guitarist. Wayne helped define
the band's sound through, of all things, the dance hit "Wheel Me Out". In the 1980s in New York City, Wayne teamed up with infamous Johnny Thunders
for a short-lived, headline grabbing, punk rock group Gang War.
In 1994, Wayne moved to Los Angeles and signed with Epitaph Records. He recorded four records in as many years. He produced the album Full Circle
with provocateur John Sinclair and produced an MC5 retrospective collection for Rhino Records entitled The Big Bang, as well as a hits compilation
Wayne is recognized nearly as often as a vigorous social activist. Along with wife Margaret Saadi Kramer and British singer Billy Bragg, Wayne founded
Jail Guitar Doors USA, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that provides guitars for prisoner rehabilitation. Known as "the loudest charity on
planet earth," JGD-USA launched at Sing Sing Prison in 2009 and has since intervened in over 50 adult and juvenile facilities. Shepard Fairey donated
the charity's logo and board member Adam McKay's company Funny or Die donated the design of its interactive site. Shira Piven and Adam McKay
directed a short film entitled The Beast & The Angel for PBS as part of their new LifeCasters series. It is a film about Wayne and it is currently in

It's the beach party of your dreams. Not one of those with the squeaky-clean suburban kids doing the frug at Malibu like in the movies, oh no. This is Myrtle Beach, filled with dangerous bikers and gang members and hot mamas and escaped convicts and god knows who else (best not to ask), all cruising for kicks. It's after midnight but the heat still lingers from a blistering day. Except for a small bonfire, the dark is all-enveloping; couples vanish into it and you'd best be looking elsewhere. At the fire, some guy's carving his initials into his hand with a pen knife, and two babes are noodle-dancing to the waves, or maybe just the voices in their heads. They need music, dammit. Just then, a cloud of dust materializes at the far end of the boardwalk, heading your way, getting closer by the minute. As it approaches, you can just make out the silhouette of a rather large man atop a little motor scooter, some crazy looking guitar slung over his shoulder. Who IS this guy? The scooter chugs to a stop at your feet, and off steps the only musician in the known world who could play this party without having the shit kicked out of him. Bo Diddley.
He plugs in, kicks off a scorching guitar riff. The band falls in. And the place goes totally batshit. Miraculously, someone thought to bring along a tape recorder. The result: Bo Diddley's Beach Party, the absolute pinnacle of vicarious musical thrills. Presented in its original, glorious, Distort-O-Phonic mono, this sweaty grungefest kicks ass from start to finish.
Lots of albums claim to be essential, groundbreaking, and all that crap, and pointyheaded rock crits fawn over cosmic lyrical brainfarts and diminished ninths and such. Bo Ddiddley's Beach Party just kicks sand in their faces and dares you not to dance.

BirdsSeth Glier's new album Birds is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There's grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.
Glier (pronounced Gleer) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the Birds, he says I'd check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.
Birds is Glier's fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.
The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with Water on Fire, a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. Hasn't Hit Me Yet has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier's autistic brother.
Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. I was really trying to explore connections on this record, Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on Justice for All, a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. Like I Do takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.
The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while Too Much Water pairs Glier's voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early '70s. People Like Us is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on Just Because I Can sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.
Even the cover tune, a reimagined version of Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, evokes urgency. Although it was written 50 years ago, it's still about what's happening right now, Glier says.
Birds began taking shape after Glier lost his brother, Jamie, who died in October 2015, and inspired a TED Talk performance that Glier gave in 2016. My brother passing away was a huge component of where I was and what I was looking for, Glier says. In particular, I was looking for meanings, wanting his life to mean more than just being over.
For a long time afterward, Glier passed the time by writing songs and inspecting each melody with the feathered fellows by his windowsill. Instead of recording the album in a Los Angeles studio, as he did on his 2015 album If I Could Change One Thing, he decided to make Birds at home.
