Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue, An American In Paris (Speakers Corner)

This fast and furious orchestral work with piano, which begins with what must surely be the most famous clarinet glissando of modern times, was composed with the intention of presenting as many facets as possible of music from the New World in the short space of around 15 minutes. In his Rhapsody In Blue Gershwin wanted to »paint a musical kaleidoscope of America - our enormous melting pot, our typical national traits, our blues, our seething city life«. With this in mind, Leonard Bernstein made a number of recordings of the work and among the many excellent recordings that he made as a conductor or as a soloist, this present version with the Columbia Orchestra, from 1959, is especially of note. Bernstein takes on a double function as conductor and soloist and manoeuvres his way safely and surely through the highly diversified score to create a well-rounded picture filled with hefty orchestral dynamics and finely chiselled solo playing. In Gershwin's freely composed work the soloist and orchestra do not resort to bombastic shock effects or egomaniac keyboard acrobatics, and so this the work can be described as rhapsodic in the very best sense of the word.
Most fittingly, on the B side there is another freely composed work - the autobiographical sketch entitled An American In Paris. The superb New York musicians paint the impressions of a visitor to the hectic French capital city - that too is the sound of America.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

On their second conceptual album together, Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans offered up a profound reinterpretation of George Gershwin's famed opera Porgy and Bess. A landmark release in orchestral jazz and arguably the best of their many collaborations, Evans' adaptation of Gershwin's score here is a veritable tour de force and although the outing features strong performances from Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums), Davis' poignant trumpet playing is the unequivocal star. Transcendent material like Summertime and I Love You Porgy display the true beauty of Miles Davis and Gil Evans' collective genius, their ability to reach the listener on not only a musical level but an emotional one as well.

    Body And Soul (45 RPM)

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

Small jazz groups brought out the best in Billie Holiday - especially groups as good as the one heard on this classic 1957 recording. Ben Webster, Harry Sweets Edison and the other members of this stellar ensemble were not just gifted soloists but sensitive accompanists as well. Lady Day was rarely more ably supported than she was on this program of sturdy standards, including three gems by the Gershwin brothers -and she rarely sounded more luminous.

    Snowbound (Pure Pleasure)

Wrapped in the soothing strings of arranger Don Costa, Sarah Vaughan recorded an unsurprisingly dreamy ballads collection titled Snowbound. Despite the peaceful atmosphere and strolling tempo, Vaughan hardly treats the material as a cinch for her voice; all of these 11 songs find her searching for different ways to present timeworn standards. The opening title track is one of the warmest, most romantic songs on the LP, Vaughan plumbing the depths of her alto and nearly perfecting her humming vibrato. She also selects an obscure tune from the Gershwins (Blah, Blah, Blah, understandably overlooked but fun nevertheless) and, near the end, turns from cozy ballads into a mini-suite of forlorn material: I Fall in Love Too Easily, Glad to Be Unhappy, and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most. Snowbound is an overlooked gem from Sarah Vaughan's Roulette years.

All-Star Musician Lineup of Red Garland, John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, George Joyner and Arthur Taylor. Originally Released in November 1957.

Some groups have existed only in the recording studio but have produced music of lasting value.

This quintet, under pianist Red Garland's leadership, actually did play some gigs around New York in the fall of 1957, but even if it hadn't, the rapport in the studio would still have been powerful. Beginning with the association of Garland and sax master John Coltrane in the Miles Davis Quintet and continuing with Arthur Taylor's trio connection with Garland, and trumpeter Donald Byrd's having worked with all of them in one form or another, there was enough of a common spirit in the musical attitudes of all the participants. The title blues spans an entire side; the overleaf is shared by Gershwin's They Can't Take That Away from Me and Dameron's Our Delight.

Mack The Knife: Ella In Berlin

43-year-old Ella rolls through her typical routine in feisty fashion on this 1960 recording, which documents the opening show of her European tour. There's the Satchmo impersonation (a joyous Mack the Knife), the lengthy scat showcase (How High the Moon), and a bevy of Gershwin and Porter tunes. Supported by pianist Paul Smith's quartet, Ella's voice sounds earthier than usual and her phrasing is as appealing as ever. She's tender on Misty and sultry on Too Darn Hot.

The warm, sophisticated nature of the material here is readily apparent from the get go courtesy of opener and album namesake, Django, a fine dedication to the memory of guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt. Louis Smith was one of the most vital jazz trumpeters of the late 1950s. His beautiful tone, fluent style and exciting solos competed with Lee Morgan and even Miles Davis. Smithville, from 1958, features him at the peak of his powers. Recorded the same year as Smith's heated appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival with Horace Silver, Smithville features the trumpeter interacting with tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse and pianist Sonny Clark on some stunning performances. The title cut, a lengthy themeless blues, is full of creative solos, "Wetu" is explosive (with Rouse challenging Smith), and "Embraceable You" contains emotional solos that make the George Gershwin ballad sound brand new. Louis Smith proves to be a masterful player whose solos are full of surprises and honest emotions. Smithville is a gem that all hard bop collectors will cherish.

    Porgy & Bess (Speakers Corner)

The dream of creating an American opera such as Scott Joplin's Treemonisha, written in 1911, inspired George Gershwin a good twenty years later to amazing compositional feats. While Gershwin had brought his musical and musical comedies with great Éclat to Broadway, he wanted his through-composed stage work Porgy And Bess to be regarded as a legitimate opera.

No matter whether one regards this exceptional work as »American folk opera« (The New York Times) or as a veristic portrayal of African-American life, central to the work is the expressionistic orchestral music that includes (work) songs, spirituals and elements of jazz, and the cast of singers, which, at the insistence of Gershwin, featured African-American singers.

This stipulation will certainly have suited Verve boss Norman Granz who engaged not only a fresh and lively big band but also a classical string orchestra to support his successful duo of Ella and Louis. Thanks to this superb line-up, the catchy song I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' rolls along sleekly with swing and drive, while Summertime and Bess, You Is My Woman Now wafts away to the sound of heavenly violins. Listening to this music, you couldn't care less about the genre or category, just as long as these two genial musicians perform wonderfully arranged material from the American Song Book. The incomparable nasal twang of Armstrong's solo trumpet seeks out unerringly jazz elements where you would least expect them.

    Musicians:

    • Ella Fitzgerald (vocal)

    • Louis Armstrong (trumpet, vocal)

Recording: August 1957 in Los Angeles and October 1957 in Chicago

    Production: Norman Granz

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Cheap Thrills

Ranked 338/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
    Sourced from the Original Masters

One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 1968 by press and public, Cheap Thrills delivered on every expectation and more. Released within a year after the debut album Big Brother And The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, Cheap Thrills showcases a tried & true Big Brother And The Holding Company, a highly confident Janis Joplin on vocals and an impeccable production.

With the heart-rending version of Piece Of My Heart and a definitive cover of Gershwin's Summertime, the album (which consists of studio in addition to live material) shot to the top of the charts and stayed there. Poses

Poses is the second studio album by the American-Canadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, originally released in 2001, and now available on vinyl for the first time. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Pierre Marchand, with select tracks produced by Propellerheads' Alex Gifford (Shadows), Ethan Johns (California), Damian LeGassick (The Tower of Learning), and Greg Wells (Across the Universe).

Poses contains ornate, piano-driven arrangements that cite a wide variety of musical sources, from indie pop to Gershwin to trip-hop and back again. The album took a year and a half to record, most of it written during Wainwright's six-month stay at the Chelsea Hotel. While Poses continues the enveloping sound established by Wainwright's debut album, collaborations between Wainwright and various producers and guest musicians pushed it in different directions, resulting in drum loops, gritty beats in unexpected places, and a fuller, live sound. Using fewer operatic elements than the previous album, in an attempt to create a more radio-friendly pop record, Poses addresses debauchery and love in less esoteric means. Guests on the album include Wainwright's sister, Martha Wainwright, fellow singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson, and rock musician Melissa Auf der Maur.

All tracks were written by Wainwright except for Shadows, which was co-written by Alex Gifford, and One Man Guy, a song written and originally performed by Wainwright's father, Loudon Wainwright III.

    Love Scenes

Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s.

Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the album's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky), which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's They Can't Take That Away from Me. Her swing is artfully subdued (All or Nothing at All), and her wry, expressive approach to Peel Me a Grape is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You and Garden in the Rain. Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. --Terry Wood

Carole King is the most successful female songwriter of the 20th century, having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999. She also wrote 61 hits that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts between 1952 and 2005.

Carole King has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her songwriting. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be honored this way.

Welcome Home was released in 1978. This was an emotional time for Carole as her husband Rick Evers, who co-wrote some of the lyrics on the album, died, shortly after this album was recorded.

Morning Sun made an appearance in the adult contemporary chart. Venusian Diamond is a magnificent Beatle-esque song.

Simple Things by Carole King was originally released in 1977. The track Hardrock CafÉ was a big success in charts around the globe, but this album contains many more precious moments.

It's a very bold sounding album, with songs that feature a lot of dramatic instrumental references. Simple Things has a reference to her early solo work. Most notifiable is the wall of sound type pop, she often created during her Brill Building days.
Carole King seemed to have come musically full circle with this exciting album and over the years, Simple Things has become somewhat of a favorite gem amongst the many Carole King fans.
